Great staff! Super helpful fitting our new puppy with the right harness, plus giving her lots of love. We walked around trying it out with a new leash. The store has a great harness and leash selection and looks like great variety of sweaters and jackets too but those will be for later. They carry Go Dog toys at good prices. They are great toys that are hard to rip apart. We will be visiting more. Did not have the toothpaste we like but they are a small store so I think they have a good focus for the space they have. read more

If you live in the neighborhood and need something small and quick, this might be a good place for you to make a pitstop. But generally speaking, this small local neighborhood store is very overpriced. What really caught me off guard today (which was my fourth or fifth visit to the store) was the behavior of the dog behind the counter. Multiple times the dog behind the counter let out a loud and aggressive series of barks towards customers and their dogs. It wasn't a friendly bark, and definitely scared the puppy in the arms of the customer in front of me. I have absolutely no issue with dogs that bark loud or aggressive as opposed to a friendly bark, but seeing that it is a dog store in which customers often bring in their dogs, it is not a very welcoming experience to have such a dog behind the counter. read more

This store has an excellent selection of high quality pet supplies, at least for cats! My favorite purchase is the medium sized cat bed I got for $75 and two of my three cats are loving it already (pictured, senior 12lb cat Asher and 5lb kitten Pepita - there will be space for 5lb Poppy when she feels like it). They also love the toys I bought for them (a leacock feather, a thick kicker toy, a wood scratcher with rope) and the cat treats (Bonito flakes). The staff here was also super friendly, pointed me to exactly where the cat stuff was! Definitely will return when in Portland again. read more

I went to this location for the first time but I used to go to their old location next to where Detour Cafe used to be. It's another restaurant now. We used to like going in with our puppy. He is now a senior with digestive issues and is very picky with food. I make his food but also rely on kibble. Their selection of dog food is rather limited. I think it's great they have good supply of toys and non-food items but it's like...how many different toys and fancy dog beds do they need in there? I would like to support them but I can't if I can't regularly go there to get the food. Having said that, I'd prefer this location exist than not exist. It was helpful to get small bags of dog food and they have ample samples - although I felt like I wouldn't have been allowed to walk out with only samples if I needed to use them to see what my dog would be willing or not willing to eat. So fingers crossed the bag of dog food will sit well with him. read more

Since we had to leave our dog home for our outing yesterday, we decided to stop in after getting breakfast across the street to get her some treats. What a cute store! I love that they have locally made items for pets like beautiful collars and leashes, and even hand made sweaters! The staff asked us if we needed help but we mentioned we were just browsing. Everyone there was very kind. They had a large selection of unique toys and treats, We opted for a giant bully stick, some catnip toys for our kitties, a fishing pole, some cat litter and some cute stickers they had out. I personally felt like it was very reasonably priced, not any more than I would have paid at a chain pet store. We adopted our dog last week, and For Paws PDX was one of our first stops before heading home. The staff is extremely helpful, and they dealt with a leash reactive dog very well. We purchased the Gentle Leader on Alessandra's recommendation, and it has worked like a charm. Teddy has been using it for about a week, and his behavior has seen some massive improvement. I recently moved back to Portland from Seattle, where I got very spoiled by the amazing selection and knowledgeable staff at Mud Bay, and tried to find its Portland counterpart. For Paws made a good case for itself, but ultimately fell slightly short. They have a good selection of dry kibble, but the canned food and litter selections are rather limited, at least at this location. The girl working there didn't seem to know much about the products when asked for recommendations. When I finally settled on a case of decent-seeming canned food, it cost me $37. That's just absurd. Overall, a big bag of litter, dry kibble and a case of canned food cost me in the area of $60. Sorry, For Paws, but while I want to feed Miss Priss good food, your prices are outrageous. We live a couple of blocks away and this is our dog Pete's favorite place to visit- so much so that he tries to bring us there several times a day. The staff are always very kind and helpful and generously give Pete treats when we visit. It is with great sadness that I write a negative review of For Paws. We specifically went to For Paws because we wanted to support a local pet supplies store, and it's nearby, and because it's gotten great reviews on Yelp. We had bought our leashes there, which were great, but more expensive than say, Petco or other mass-market places, but we liked supporting a local business. We went back to buy a dog bed. The said dog bed ("large") was actually very flat, not cushiony, and it was $51. It was not a good deal, but as mentioned, we wanted to be supportive of local businesses. Upon opening the door and looking at our 50-lb dog, Guinness, we realized it was too small. So, back in the car it went, and we tried to take it back (two days later, when we had time). The customer service was deplorable! The girl behind the counter didn't smile, didn't explain why, but said that they only give store credit rather than money back. At no point in the transaction, or in the store, or on their website, does it say that they don't allow returns. She also reminded my partner that she shouldn't lose the gift card or she wouldn't get anything back! We spend hundreds of dollars in food and toys and daycare on our dogs every month. We were excited to buy our food from For Paws, but now we won't be. So, we now have a $51 store credit to a store that wasn't kind to us, and a great disappointment in our hearts. Store Owner: Is $51 worth being unfriendly and unkind to would-be loyal customers? read more

Despite how the name sounds like an English syntactic oddity, For Paws gets a thumbs up from me. It's a little storefront (i.e., maybe not the best place to bring Fluffy the 95-Pound Dinohound along while browsing) but crammed full of critter accessories, toys, and food. Which brings me to Episode 1,046 of Why My Cat Is a Royal Pain in the Ass, Even More than Most Cats: The Cat's honeymoon period with Nature's Variety Turkey and Duck edition is definitely over. He'll scatter it around his bowl but gladly eat the crappy, glutinous kibble we keep for the neighborhood latchkey kitty. In fact, he'll use his raccoon jaws to rip open bags of the cheap cat food and leave the evidence all over our kitchen cupboards. He doesn't deserve it, but the humans in my house prefer it when the cat eats well. So we checked out the cat food selection at For Paws and stumbled upon a sweet haul of gluten-free and nutritious morsels for my favorite four-legged fat ass. Also, there's a fridge of raw food options, just in case your pet gets the platinum club goods only. The best part is a bucket of generously sized sample bags near the register. But you should be cool and buy something and not deprive other fat ass cats the joys of a tasting menu kind of lifestyle. Also, for the pet-having contingent tapping its feet and demanding, "But what about products for doooooogs?" I haven't forgotten you. They have dog things, too! I don't know what but they do! read more

The sign says something like "Food, Toys, Treats and Belly Rubs!" I was there to pick up kitty food, and their prices were really great! Before I hit the register, I couldn't help but pick up a new toy for our puppy. While I didn't buy any treats, there were a ton to choose from! I went to the counter to pay, where I was greeted by three really cool and friendly young ladies (at least one of which must be the purveyor.) We had some delightful banter, chatted about the new business, and finished up. As I was leaving, I realized I'd forgotten something: The belly rub! Um, never mind. read more

Ed does NOT need to 'improve his stamina'. He does not have the slightest problem with energy needs (other than needing to slow down a bit). He's a healthy, rambunctious, fiber-chewing, squirrel-chasing, couch-loving individual. There's no apparent need to get him started on a raw food diet but, what the heck? It's worth a shot to see if he feels different. Since we were in this neighborhood anyway, I stopped in here to check it out & get the pooch some food. It is a very cute store, not fussy, has all the basics, does not feel like a boutique, but has all the good products. There are also 2 very sweet French bull dogs and I only wish Ed behaved as well as these 2 do... The woman tending shop gave me a tremendous amount of information on raw food diets, all of which was quite sensible. There was no foodie diatribe going on. Simply put, she sold me when she discussed her dogs' coats being shinier & with less shedding on a raw food diet. Personally, I'm not too keen on vacuuming 2 or 3 times a day, nor am I fond of Jack Russell fur on every possible surface. We're trying the new diet, and Ed seems pleased. The price is about right, and I figure if he's happy & healthy, the $$ spent up front saves $$ spent at the vet's. It's a win:win situation. He hasn't converted yet, what with Thanksgiving leftovers & all...he's very good at Hoovering up any tidbits, so I can't guarantee he'll remain steadfastly raw, but things seem to be working. The shop is a new addition to the Division Street neighborhood & it is worth a visit. Highly recommended with tail-wagging approval! read more

I'm so happy that I came across this little S.E. gem of a pet store. I can't believe I hadn't discovered it before as Iive about 4 blocks away, but I'm glad that I finally did. Not only are all of the staff friendly and helpful but their prices are great (Pupina harness elsewhere in Portland boutique pet store, $28, at Paws, the same one was $22). They carry a great variety of different foods and have samples of just about all of them for you to try out. Bulk treats are available and their toy selection is fantastic. Overall a really great pet store. I highly recommend shopping there for all of your furry friends! read more

Super hip and fun independently owned pet store in a cozy neighborhood. They have an assortment of pet products ranging from the staples (collars and leashes) to ultra cool and hilarious pet costumes! In addition, there are a variety of premium dog and cat food brands including Call of the Wild (the good stuff!). Great LITTLE shop for all the necessities! That being said, I don't think you should go traipsing around with your 80lb Mastiff at your side. Not the biggest of places. I also think it's wonderful how they support local vendors and animal shelters! Also bought my girl a 'I [heart] PDX' bandanna as a gift. So nice how they had touristy stuff. read more

I recently visited For Paws while walking home for brunch. I have two dogs, one of which is a second chance pup from the Humane Society that was severely malnourished from the mill it was rescued from in Cali. I have been trying to get her to gain weight while keeping my second dog at a healthy weight (he likes to eat....a lot). Cassandra helped me find several options to meet both these needs while not letting the chubby one be excluded lol. I will definitely be back for all my pets future needs! read more

This is our neighborhood store and we love it. We've been hermitting up a bit since COVID, but I still wanted to leave a review and say this place is great. I love how whenever I come in they are listening to the score from Ghost World or Velvet Goldmine OST... or something else neat. Our schnauzer Seamus comes here for his stuff and we also get things for our cats Zucchini and Al. To the old reviews from 2013 mentioning them "not being friendly"... A) You are wrong B) You probably expect customer service people to be subservient chipper butlers rather than normal humans. read more

I went here for the first time with my newly adopted dog and there isn't much selection for the effort of going out of my way to find parking on Division Street. I was most annoyed with the loose dog in the store that wouldn't leave my dog alone, my dog was clearly not interested (ignoring her, and the hackles on her back standing when the loose dog was sniffing at her too obnoxiously). This loose dog then peed on the floor by me twice and I had to tell the girls at the counter and they cleaned the mess but didn't put their dog on a leash. The girls were whispering to each other at the counter and I felt like I walked into someone's household and felt uninvited and weird. read more

I gotta say all my experiences at this store have been quite weak. I've been here on three occasions and each visit, the staff has been very disinterested. On my most recent visit, the clerk was answering my question while immersed in something she was doing on the computer and wouldn't look up at me as she typed. I definitely felt like I was interrupting something. Also, the prices here are high. I bought a covered litter box here a few weeks ago because it was the only store nearby that carried it. If I'd bought it online or directly from the manufacturer, it would've been $25. For Paws had it marked at $42. This most recent visit, I bought some anxiety relief drops for travel, priced at $17 but available at other retailers for $9, nearly half that. Not a bad place if you're in a pinch or want to support local pet stores, but there are others in the area that are a lot more personable and reasonably-priced. read more

3 different vets & several visits could not figure out what was causing my 12 wk pitty boxer mix puppy terrible bloating and indigestion but For Paws suggested chicken allergy and a great lamb only food source that completely solved his digestion and skin issues! I took him for allergy testing anyways and sure enough- chicken and grain were allergies and every vet had suggested diets of chicken and rice. I am so grateful for the awesome people at For Paws. They let me spend for freaking ever in there looking at everything and put up with maui's puppy behavior. They seem to know the name of every dog that walks in the store and treat everyone like their dog is the cutest dog they've ever seen. They are so kind. I don't love or hate it. It's where I buy my kitty food because I wanted a more natural alternative to the brands you can find at Petsmart. The parking can be a pain but its brilliant if there is a spot available in their mini lot. I don't recall having a poor experience any time that I've gone, but there has been nothing outstanding. There's a young lady that usually helps me, she isn't warm by any means but gives me the answers I need to make the right decision. I usually want to buy more, but sometimes it feels quite depressing there so I just get in and out. If I find another place that sells the same brand, I would probably go there just to have a more exciting and fun shopping experience. read more

What a disappointment for locally owned pet store. I came in and the person working seemed to be perturbed she had to work. I asked her were a certain dog food was and she pointed over there where there was 16 different choices. When asked for a recommendation of a good dog food she told me they only sell good dog food, but would not help with information on certain dog foods. Very disinterested in customer service and just kept telling me everything they sell is good rather than giving me information and being helpful.until I really explained I needed help. Discovered this little gem while walking down this area. Very cute place, friendly people and competitive prices. This is the only pet store (that I found, so far) here in Portland that sells Animal Planet Costumes. Yes, whales, dinosaurs and sharks). The place is very clean and well kept. For paws is great! I would say it's definitely more heavily stocked for dogs. There are some great choices for cats as well just not as many. I'm a cat owner and would give the shop 5 stars if they catered to cat owners a bit more. They can even keep the dog section larger, just looking for more choices for my little baby! They have fresh refrigerated food for cats if that is something you are looking for. They staff is helpful, not overly friendly, but there is no doubt they LOVE animals and are caring. Prices on odd and end items like leashes, scratch pads, toys, ect are comparable to Petco. Some items are pricier, some are less expensive! I bought my cat a cone when he hurt his head and it was actually less expensive at For Paws than Petco. I have only been to petco twice (closet one to this location) and it was really drab. I would rather support this local pet shop hands down :D read more
