This is partly due to the lack of intimacy that makes Willunga so lovely and also in part to the food. Firstly, Seppeltsfield is like a mini village. Everything is large scale and audacious. You can see the investment in the recent renovation everywhere you look - the only issue is that it's removed some of the atmosphere. I couldn't put my finger on it until I realised that the design style is 'wedding' - it's pretty but inoffensive and lacking in any character. While service at Fino was impeccable and the staff attentive and gorgeous the food was only 'good' when I wanted it to be great. The Zeppole anchovy starter was tiny and dry, the potato dish was really just fancy cut crisps. For main, I had the pork belly which should have had a crispier skin (and didn't). Desserts though were delicious though. I wanted to like Fino more but the South Australian restaurant scene is booming at the moment and standards are every high. I hope they push a few boundaries in future as the potential is absolutely there.

The restaurant is beautifully presented from the stunning tables and tableware to the bar and alfresco seating - just stunning and a perfect complement to the winery itself. The food itself let me down both visits just in the taste, not in presentation. My chicken looked stunning but there was a large amount of soy sauce to the point that everything sitting on the plate was drenched and hard to eat. the parts of the meal that weren't drenched were great and as expected. The menu is small but covers all bases and everyone will find something to love and enjoy. I do encourage any restaurant goers to taste the Seppeltsfield wine - try the sparkling Shiraz. Cocktails were all $30 - quite steep for this level of table service and setting. We had no drinks that night and decided on several appetizers and one large plate. We started with the crispy spring rolls - 3 to an order - which were served interestingly with a soy dipping sauce and not a sweet and sour one as is customary. It was different and good. Next we had the roasted pumpkin with labneh and pumpkin seeds. It was basically one small to medium wedge, well roasted and sliced and although tasty, not worth $18 AU. Next we had the Asian dumplings. They were beautifully plated and had just enough garlic and ginger in the pork filling. The sauce served with them had too much oil for my liking, the soy portion underneath the oil was just right. They were so tasty my better half ordered a second plate of them. Last and best was the crispy pork belly with Thai coconut sauce - it was almost like a curry - the fish sauce was very noticeable in a good way. The pork was tender and moist with crispy skin and the sauce was really delicious and well balanced. The dishes were all garnished exactly the same way with herbs, sliced scallions, cilantro and Fresno peppers. It would have been nice if there had been a bit more variety given the pricing. The flavor of everything was good however the pricing is too high for me to return.

The decor is modern minimalist with an open kitchen in the restaurant area and a bar area next to it. Staff were very friendly and engaging with the service being prompt and efficient. The tapas style menu is varied with contrasting styles and flavours. We ordered three dishes between us being the grilled Harvey bay scallops, the wild mushroom arancini balls and the roasted cauliflower with chick peas and lemongrass. All three dishes were outstanding and more than sufficient after a busy day in the wineries. Dishes averaged at $18 each. They also have an amazing variety of 36 pure malt whiskys and 22 gins which took up the whole wall of the bar not to mention the local wine list. Overall an enjoyable evening and would definitely return.

The wine menu is spectacular; they definitely have some high end stuff here - I couldn't believe they had bottles on offer for $300! We ordered a more moderately priced but beautiful Shiraz at the recommendation of our waitress. Nice they decanted it for us on the table as well. We had the beef carpaccio for our starter, which had a nice delicate flavour. For my main I ordered the beef cheeks which were tasty but incredibly rich. The vegetables would have helped cut through the richness but sadly the accompanying "baby leeks" were just 2 puny spring onions and the celeriac puree was almost nonexistent there was so little of it. Not sure if it was related to the meal, but afterward my husband did get sick to his stomach. He thinks possibly the steak might have been a little bit frozen in the middle but isn't sure. What a pity because that steak was the most expensive thing on the menu and he ended up throwing up the whole thing anyway... On the bright side, our friends who ordered the scotch filet and the gnocchi said their dishes were great, so maybe my husband and I just ordered the wrong things. The fresh bread we ordered as a starter was delicious and the house made parmesan oil was amazing (I was so tempted to buy a bottle as they sell them at the front of the house!)

Food was a bit delayed which was odd given we showed up near lunch closing - but we did have 5 people. Sat outside and it was wonderful. Overall great meal and experience!

I couldn't complain about anything, it was moody (in a good way), the staff were professional, there was enough food and it was good - probably great, but not amazing. The wine bar was bizarre, it was a strage pokey little room of to the side of the restaurant with unsightly stripped paint on the walls. It felt somewhat like a candy store. I do believe that the deck is the place to go for a pre dinner drink but it was cold and dark when we arrived so I didn't get to experience it. I loved Appelation and would consider going back, but it didn't impress me quite the way Southern Ocean Lodge did and they are both part of the same "Luxury Lodges of Australia Group" perhaps I was spoilt on Kangaroo Island and I have set the bar too high. I am potentially being over critical but when you spend approx $1000 per night I think it's allowed. A great place for dinner, slightly over priced, but still worthy of a visit. P.S. The accommodation is outstanding, the outdoor shower made my day :)

I was unable to have my dessert selection of coconut panna cotta as it had not set so settled for the icecream. When we asked our desserts to be delayed due to our full stomachs it was met with "we need your table". It was 2pm, and we felt rushed. A beautiful meal cannot be rushed. I found it off putting that we were served by a number of different people over the course of the meal, and one man dressed like a customer caught us off guard when he came to our table. I thought it was a random coming up to us. It was nice that we were served once by the chef, and only knew it was her from newspaper articles. I would prefer that we have the one staff looking after us as it would have made the experience more personal, and the chef then popping to our table to introduce herself.
