In A Nutshell: -fermentAsian is an upscale, southeast asian (mainly Vietnamese, some Thai) restaurant in Barossa Valley, SA. -It's a niche food catering to the Australian population, if you know what I mean. -The building is very old, rustic, feels just like my house back home (i.e. Craftsman) w/ some upgraded modern expansions. -The interior is well lit & simply decorated, which is nice. -The service was very attentive & good. -I enjoy places like this where you can enjoy each course one-by-one. -My favorite dish was the oxtail dumplings. -We brought our own bottle of wine, which you can do anyday except Friday/Saturdays. A luncheon for four of us ladies was a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. We arrived just after 12noon and taken to our table. The tables are a little crowded, and it was easy to hurt oneself from the fireplace mantle corner edge when getting to the corner chair. The food is brilliantly presented, and tasty too. We were able to go with the chefs selection of 3 entree and 5 mains ($62 pp) and we should not have gone for desserts and coffee but couldn't resist. I was unable to have my dessert selection of coconut panna cotta as it had not set so settled for the icecream. When we asked our desserts to be delayed due to our full stomachs it was met with "we need your table". It was 2pm, and we felt rushed. A beautiful meal cannot be rushed. I found it off putting that we were served by a number of different people over the course of the meal, and one man dressed like a customer caught us off guard when he came to our table. I thought it was a random coming up to us. It was nice that we were served once by the chef, and only knew it was her from newspaper articles. I would prefer that we have the one staff looking after us as it would have made the experience more personal, and the chef then popping to our table to introduce herself. read more

Now you wouldn't really think of eating Vietnamese food when you're wine tasting but this place came highly recommended, by a Vietnamese person no less! We booked this in for lunch at 12 and visited two wineries before hand. It was fairly empty when we got there but started to get packed as the afternoon went on. Our waiter recommended sharing three entrees and two mains between the three of us. We also ordered some barossa valley rose which was very nice! They timed it well so that one entree came out at a time. They were all really tasty and had a nice flavor - spring rolls, wagyu beef and a prawn salad. We also had rice with the food and started getting a bit full by the time the mains came out but everything was so delicious we had to eat it all! The cod dish came out and it was really nice but then the curry duck dish was served and that blew everything out of the water. I normally don't like coconut but this was mild enough and the duck just fell off the bone. Everything was delicious and tasted authentic! Service was top notch with great ambiance! read more

We were advised by several people that we had to try this Vietnamese restaurant. Good advice. If only the loud-mouthed lady at the table next to us, who kept announcing to all in the room that "I'm from New York," wasn't there. My guess she's from either Rochester or Queens. From Manhattan or Brooklyn she wouldn't feel the need to make such an ass of herself. It was an good meal, only encumbered by our loud neighbor and typical lame Australian service. The restaurant is in an adapted house, so diners are in separate rooms - ours had only four table for a total of ten people in a "front parlor." The best dish we had was the "Thit lon cuon la lot," fresh betel leaves with sticky caramelized pork. Our waitress almost insisted we have it and it was a great recommendation. A bit spicy, with wonderful fresh flavors. Nothing stood out after that, except the non-descript Hanoi spring rolls, which were... non-descript. Our other dishes were good, interesting, but not special. I think the Vietnamese flavors have been toned down for South Australian clientele, just like they would do in America. Too bad. read more

Brilliant Sommelier, but oh dear the rest!! Firstly the Sommelier was brilliant and knew his stuff, although not sure we actually liked most of the pairings, but that was OK! Certainly a "Classic Stone House" freezing! (Can always tell a local as they come dressed in their overcoats!) Put in a small room with no heating, place was so cold the hot plates became cold within minutes and so to did the food. Paper table clothes for a fine dining restaurant, REALLY! Beef Cheeks arrived, rice came later! 5 small portions of desert to share between 5, REALLY Presentation nothing like any pictures, awful! Then to top it all the last half of the meal was spent with a crying baby brought from another room presumably to give other guests a rest REALLY. What a great meal in the Barossa! Came here on the recommendation of others and very much enjoyed thr meal. Did the chef's tasting menu for $75 pp and it was amazing and flavorful! Went perfectly with a glass of local Riesling. Could not recommend enough. read more

My partner and I went here a while ago and it's taken us a little while to make a review but our experience is still bothering us so we decided to share. We understood we came on a busy night but automatically were shoved into a room off to the side out of view and sight of the main room. We were greeted rudely and guided to our tables and our waitstaff left us. We were really excited for the extensive wine list that was advertised but when we asked our waitstaff what they recommended we were met with rude "know it all" attitude and we felt rushed to pick and also embarrassed. We also let our waitstaff know that my partner had a nut allergy and again we were met with attitude like we were a huge inconvenience. They went to the kitchen to ask what menu items could be changed (or items that we couldn't have all together) and when they came back they had a written list of what items we could have which was less than half the menu. We asked if the ones with nuts as garnishes could just be removed - again - met with rudeness and coldness and they straight out just said no they couldn't remove the garnishes. We ended the night feeling that our waitstaff was homophobic as we saw the same waitstaff talking to other couples in a very different fashion to how they were communicating with us. Went there for dinner and our table was still being used by the group before us. Had to wait in the hallway by bathroom while our table got set. Once at the table you notice how loud the restaurant is. At times it felt like we had to yell across the table to talk to each other. We were a group of five which means you have to have a set menu chosen by the chef. It's a fair indication of the menu and u leave full after. We had 3 starters and then 5 mains and a vegetable dish. Each dish comes out separately and the mains are served with rice. The food itself is the real winner at this restaurant. Everything was delicious and refreshing. Ambiance in the restaurant is a little off putting though. If you decide to go here make sure u have the pork belly. read more

High End Vietnamese, superb food. This restaurant was recommended by a foodie friend and it did not disappoint. The Red Curry Duck is a must try. The tasting menu is good, however for a group a better option is to order individual meals and share, serving sizes are on the smaller side. Don't bother the owner doesn't even know what on his web site let alone what's indicated on the plaque adjacent the front door,lunch time 12-2.30pm we arrived at 2.00 pm and were advised they were now closed despite the sign saying otherwise,the owner was quite rude considering the current economic climate I would have thought bums on seats were the way to go if you don't want diners close the doors and don't waste your time. read more

Had heard so many good things about this place so maybe my expectations were to high. I took 2 overseas clients and 4 domestic clients for the experience and as we all work in the wine industry we brought with us an aged riesling that was special for the occasion. We were told that they couldn't open it as Friday nights they dont allow corkage (we were spending serious dollars on food and wine basically my bill was north of $1000.00) not even a discussion or question flat out no. I didn't bother to try to question it as our waitress was not on the caring side of emotions. The food was ok, rice served was cold and unpleasant service from the main waitress was average but others were very pleasant and friendly. I will have to say average experience overall . Some dishes good to great but most average. I'd like to try it again in a few months or so to see if it is different as maybe my night was soured immediately by the initial greeting regarding corkage.... read more

I can't believe the last review for this restaurant is over 18 months old. That being said, I have seen reviews for this restaurant on other websites and they are all true. The food was exquisite. The wine list is mind-blowing - beyond my level of experience but amazing to look through. The one thing that struck me is the attentiveness of the waiting staff. We were in a group of about 20 people on two tables with multiple wines going around the tables, and yet the waiting staff never failed to refill my glass with the same wine that I had been drinking, let alone the fact that I was drinking sparkling mineral water and not flat that was also available. This may be small potatoes to some, but their level of expertise did not go unnoticed by me. i will be back. Soon I hope. read more
