Once again, I don't give this rating out lightly. So please read and digest as I take my hedonism seriously.
Cafe POD (Plate of the Day, is what the business registration says) is wonderful. The house is an old cabinetmaker's workshop according to this history (but the owner informed me cordially that it was a polite euphemism for coffin-makers!) and it both has and hasn't held up. It's an old home converted to cafe duty, and where the signage may appear a bit "hipster" from the street once you get into the menu you'll be smiling.
We came through on a week day after visiting the bookstore down the street and had a wonderful brunch and coffee. I've read that the owner has a food allergy so it's a particularly good place to go if you're trying to steer clear of gluten or are after a menu on the vegan side.
Everything I saw in this place said to me that it was put together with care, the decorations are a bit on the flamboyant side, the kitchen (what I could see of it from my stealthy peeks) was in immaculate condition. The coffee was QUITE nice.
After asking if the proprietors minded me taking some awful cell phone pictures, the man I assume to be one of the owners came over and explained the history of the building and showed me some photographs of the area from the late 19th century, and we discussed what they had gone through to renovate the place. It was very cordial and welcoming, and after our meal we both sat in a sunbeam and drank coffee reflecting on how much we liked the place. It was that kind of experience.
As we were facing disappointment over our prior favorite coffee shop in Tanunda (on a downward slide lately) it is wonderful that we've found a replacement. If you're ever passing through the area, do stop in to POD. The food, drink, hospitality, you will not be disappointed. We certainly weren't. read more
