Each time I drop by a Food Basics, i despise it a little more, if that is possible. The Food Basics is on my way home so i thought it would be convenient to drop in and grab something for dinner. My anxiety started at the door when I couldn't find a cart, so i went to an attendant who was stocking the vegetables and asked where the carts were, she said at the cashier. I'm asking myself why the carts are at the cashier but still, i walked down the whole cashier row, no carts, no baskets. So I took a deep breath and thought no worries, maybe I don't need one. I started through the isles looking for rice and immediately noticed the disarray of goods on the floor and falling off the shelves. I was too tired to wade through these isles trying to get my bearings. I left the store immediately because it's not worth it to get an anxiety attack in there. This is always been my experience in this grocery store. So no more experimenting, FRESHCO it is, where everything is where it should be. read more

Folks this is not Sobeys. Establishment is clean well stocked and staff are friendly and helpful. Expect a cut above no frills and you have set realistic expectations. I'm a regular and will continue to be so because of decent value. read more

I won't recommend. However, they have great deals and sales but the customer service is whack and also there's some homeless or just crazy customers that kicks your basket or would walk pass you and say something disrespectful/ disgusting. Personally, I only go here if I need like a last minute recipe or something to cook immediately on a long week of work etc but other than that I'd find a different grocery store if I were you. I do go there for a few items that are priced less then other stores.....when they are actually in stock. Otherwise, the store is a mess. The fresh food sections are picked over or empty. It is as if they are stocked once and then abandoned. I grew up working in my father's grocery store. If I let a section go the way they do, my Dad would have fired me!.......Train, hire and pay professionals! read more

They hung up on me twice while asking if they had t bone steaks.. also was on hold for 10 minutes. 3:14 pm on Sat June 27... kept transferring me to the meat department then answering again at the main department then hanging up on me! Of all the discount grocery stores I've been to, this particular location of Food Basics was the best! Not only is the space inviting with high ceilings and lots of natural light, the store is bright, clean and well-organized. The underground parking lot (although a bit tight) is very convenient. As for the selection, I shopped primarily in the fresh produce area; it was well-stocked with fresh vegetables and fruit. A quick trip to the store for mushrooms and zucchini turned into a cart full of groceries because the sales were great and the produce was fresh. The roasted chicken is tasty! Since warm sides are unavailable, I also picked up potato salad and mixed greens; quick and easy lunch. As for the international food options, I was impressed by the selection of Portuguese frozen fish and seafood. I also noticed many other Portuguese brands - water, cleaning supplies, etc. - and pasta imported from Italy. Some attention to Customer Service would elevate the shopping experience - the cashier was texting while scanning my items. I don't live in the area, but I'll definitely be back due to the selection and freshness! read more

I just witnessed a disturbed customer who went full caveman in this store. From what I know some staff were putting out inventory and one asked him to be careful or watch out because it was big cases of water bottles that were out and being moved (from what I saw moments before and then heard)... I could be totally wrong but what I heard started at around "I'm just telling you to watch out/be careful"... something like that from one of the employees. I wanted to commend your staff and manager for taking care of the difficult situation and remaining calm. Although it had escalated to the point that the customer was asked to leave, and then further escalated (solely by the choice of the customer and not because of the associates) with the customer attempting to destroy property, the fellows who were present held it together and did a great job of civilly dealing with someone who was not being physically or vocally peaceful. Great job, sales and stock associates :) mainly the manager (taller fellow, with dark, neatly groomed facial hair) handled the situation... he did so in a pleasant, and explanatory but serious manner. Although the experience I had was a bit scary, you guys did a great job of keeping the peace ! As for the store: Excellent location. It's clean and organized impeccably, the staff are always friendly, the parking is free and close which is extra nice in the winter --they carry sugar pies. If you don't know what that is, go and buy one. It's like a giant butter tart. read more

We have lived in the nearby area for nearly 15 years and we were so excited by a new grocery store, in the hopes of having better food buying options. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The store felt sad and worn out on opening day. The meat selection is terrible, and the quality of the meat is even worse. Some produce is good, other stuff is passable - it's a gamble every time you go in. The world foods selections are laughably bad. The bread is good though and there's a good selection of frozen pizzas. Their milk selection is disappointing. The focus seems to be on people who prefer frozen meals to cooking. This is great if you need to pick up something on short notice - we just use it as a giant convenience store. Much to our surprise Fresh Co., another discount grocer just down the street on DuPont, offers better selection. If you love to cook and have the budget available, you'll have to go down to Loblaws, a good way east on DuPont. The neighbourhood continues to lack a large grocer that has a good produce and meat selection. Fortunately Gold City Market at 1002 Bloor St. West has great produce, and Tavora on Janet Ave. has a good butcher. Diana's Italian market up on St. Clair is a good place to supplement groceries as well. Unfortunately, we still can't do all our grocery shopping at one convenient location. read more

a minute ago 0 stars! This review is for my mother who was treated like a shop lifter for checking a price on a product that she was looking for. She frequently visits this location as it is close to her and easily accessible. A few times a month doesn't spend a fortune but when you leave with 4 bags your pretty much spending $100. Was approached today by a extremely rude man. That accused her of shoplifting items she bought from another store which she had a receipt for Ignored that fact because she being a little old lady was a super dangerous thief. He probably has some sort of complex where he has to harass little old ladies! She was paraded to a cashier Insistent on the purchased items where stolen. The female cashier atleast had some common courtesy to apologize while this was happening because she used her ears to listen to reason. Nothing was taken not a single cent! After the fiasco was over. Embarrassed and shaken by this experience she didn't want to be there anymore and left instead of demanding to see the manager. Did not even get an apology from the original accuser because after puffing his detective chest out walked away from the situation. Is this how you treat your patrons! Disgusting. I feel I should also contact your head office to put in a proper complaint. read more

DO NOT SHOP HERE AT ALL! because they lie on their flyers and no one takes responsibility for it. I went to purchase pomegranates which were listed on the flyer as 88 cents. When i got to the store it was 1.47 and after i asked for the supervisor to discuss the issue he was extremely disrespectful and claimed that the flyer was for a different location. He then walked away from me in the middle of the conversation. Do not trust these people with their information at all because all they do is lie to their customers. read more

Terrible customer service yesterday at this location. Pepsi Canada is giving out these great coupons right now where you can get a bag of Lay's chips and a case of Pepsi together. The cashier, a woman named Genet, informed me that she was only going to give me one of the items, even though it clearly stated on the coupon that the deal was for the two items together. She then claimed that she couldn't scan the coupon and therefore it didn't work. At this point I asked to speak to the manager. Genet made a phone call to the manager but they couldn't be bothered to come out and speak to me. She then told me that the manager said they would honour the coupon for the chips only. I asked for the coupon back since it was obvious that this store was poorly run with untrained staff who couldn't even handle a simple coupon. Total value of the Pepsi and chips was $7.50. Such a hassle. When I told the cashier that I wasn't going to pay for the items (I was already spending $50 on other groceries there) she began slamming the case of Pepsi on the counter in order to scan it again and acting very angry. Such a horrible experience. The next day I went down the road to the Fresh Co. at Galleria Mall and they honoured the coupon without even a word. I'll be taking my business there from now on. read more

The produce and meat are generally better, and more plentiful, than at the nearby FreshCo, and they're competitively priced. Unfortunately, everything else is considerably more expensive; even the store brand stuff can be almost twice as much as at FreshCo: e.g., for a can of store-brand soup, 99c at Food Basics, 57c at FreshCo. Food Basics, despite its larger space, somehow manages to have a worse selection of meat and poultry as well, and I have never been able to find something as basic as stewing beef there. Bottom line: I'll probably only swing by Food Basics if I'm pressed for time, as I live closer to it than any other store. It's decent, but doesn't hold up to the No Frills or FreshCo (and the parking situation is much worse.) read more

Great to buy beer and wine after hours and on many holidays. Many of the vegetables are not fresh (ie. rotten lemons in a bag so you can see them) so I buy them elsewhere. Short lines and always has parking but the garage is a tight, dark nightmare. Prepare to have your car scratched! read more

The selection sucks. The produce is often wilted. I wish it had a proper butcher and knowledgeable staff. The organic section is so small it's almost non existent. I wish they had a health food section. It could have been so good, I'm totally disappointed that this is my new local grocery store. read more
