As a rule, we avoid "Cajun" restaurants outside of South Louisiana (where we live) like the plague. But during a brief visit to bucolic Fulton, Mo. to visit the Churchill Memorial we saw several intriguing restaurants & bars including Fontenot's Po-boys. A check of Yelp reviews and pics suggested there was something going on here. The Fontenots all hail from Louisiana (Lafayette and West Monroe), and wound up in Central Missouri when State Farm shut down its Monroe office (the company has a big presence in insurance-centric Columbia). It's strictly a family operation. They know exactly what they're doing, serving up authentic gumbos, jambalaya, ettouffee, beignets, and po-boys served on crusty Gambino's French bread. We split a bowl of Creole seafood gumbo (medium roux, rich with shrimp, crab, crawfish and okra). My wife had half a fried shrimp po-boy; I had half a fried oyster po-boy served dressed with remoulade. Each came with hot crunchy fries and a cup of rich brown gravy; I mean, what pairs better with a po-boy than poutine? (Note: These are not OVER-stuffed po-boys, so if you prefer them that way just specify, and they'll upcharge you a little. This is Fulton, Missouri after all, and they have to keep the lights on.) A big bowl of gumbo is a deal by any measure. Prices overall are extremely reasonable. Nice covered outside seating as well as inside, with quality Cajun and Zydeco tunes playing (no tourist junk). They are sticklers for wearing masks, which is appreciated. Beers include Abita. Just a fun evening getting to know the Fontenots and enjoying a very authentic taste of South Louisiana. Woah. We've lived in New Orleans before and have high standards for cajun food. Never thought we'd find such a great place in the middle of Missouri. They ship their bread from New Orleans multiple times a week for their poboys and IT SHOWS. The shrimp poboy was delicious and very authentic. Their pasta portion sizes were also huge and there was plenty of crawfish. They're also doing shipments of king cake for mardi gras. Very impressed - we'd make the drive for Columbia for this food. read more

When this place first opened up in its original location it was smaller and the food was pretty good. Although it was what people around here thought Cajun food should be. Still not bad. They moved to a different and bigger location and have done pretty well. We went there last night as a group and the shrimp basket has always been my go to there not to mention the portabella fries. It originally came with a small side of coleslaw and a couple of hush puppies. Last time I went no coleslaw or hush puppies? Then last night we were served fried shrimp from a frozen box and then a couple of real shrimp the size of bait. The quality and quantity has gone way down and prices have gone up. This far north of Louisiana Fontenot's does a real good creole/cajun imitation. My Thursday special of jambalaya was thick with lightly spicy sausage, lots of vegetables, and a couple of shrimp. Rice was a bit dry and bland but a splash of hot sauce remedied that. Service was outstanding. And the Cajun zydeco soundtrack gave a nice vibe to this comfortable brick and wood eatery. read more

My wife and I were on a day trip and passed through Fulton and tried Fontenot's. On the website it indicated the owners were from Louisiana so we decided to give it a go. Being from New Orleans, I'm always a little skeptical about "Cajun/creole" food served in the Midwest. This time was different. We started with the fried green tomatoes, which were spot on delicious. My wife had the shrimp poboy and I had the roast beef. Both were fantastic!! The bread they used was authentic New Orleans style French bread! I high recommend Fontenot's in Fulton!! read more

My dad had been wanting to try this place, since I was in town we gave it a shot. The place was very clean, they had Jazz playing and just had a nice family feel to the place. Staff was friendly and helpful. I chose a half fried gator poboy and a bowl of gumbo. My dad got the fried catfish dinner. The gator poboy was spot on. Lots of meat, soft bread and fresh veggies. The gumbo was ok just felt it was lacking some meat. The seasoning on the gumbo was great it was just mostly broth and rice. Great heat to the gumbo. My dad loved the catfish and hush puppies. Hidden gem. Nice atmosphere, super friendly staff and good food. Had the crawfish pie app and crawfish Po'boy. Crawfish was on the tiny side but flavor was on point. We're headed to the Quincy IL to Dre our new granddaughter and we're looking for dinner and we stopped here. He got the catfish po boy and I got a bowl of gumbo. He said it was the best fish sandwich he's ever had. The fish was cooked great and the sandwich was dressed but not overdressed. And the bread was crispy but soft on the inside. Very clean, friendly, and great food. The location isn't anything special but it's clean and comfortable. I think it's a new location. The food was very good!! Having grown up in a family where gumbo was regularly served I was happy to eat a delicious bowl of gumbo here along with other great food. We went there on. Recommendation and it was really good. I had the Crab cakes and a salad with their LOUIS dressing. Both were wonderful. We split the bananas foster and it was truly outstanding! They were VERY accommodating as I do not eat meat and my wife is GF. The owners and staff were all wonderful as well. I've wanted to try this place ever since it opened because I LOVE Cajun food....but I live out of state so just finally was able to try it tonight. It was well worth the wait. The ambiance is lovely - cozy with interesting wall decor that gives you a little trip to Louisiana; not terribly loud, very casual. The food.....yum. there were three of us - we wanted shrimp and grits (Friday special) but they'd run out (bummer..... I'm sure because it's so good!!)... So instead we ordered a starter of crab cakes, the (fried) catfish dinner, the Creole Shrimp pasta, the blackened catfish, and gumbo. We thoroughly enjoyed all of these! And then, the desserts.....I wanted them all, but we decided on lemon cake and bread pudding. Oh, my.... Yum, again. The service was quite nice as well. I'm from south Louisiana and I recommend Fontenot's Po'boys. I ate the 1/2 shrimp po-boy with cup of seafood gumbo. The flavor of the gumbo was very good. It is hard to get flavorful gumbo in Missouri. Other place may add cayenne and call it Cajun. This restaurant is worth the stop. I Love the Zydeco music playing in the background. Passing through town and saw great reviews for Fontenot's. We were not disappointed! Po'boys were great. The sandwiches came on soft hoogie rolls with a creamy spicy sauce. Fries were fresh cut & came with gravy. Potato salad was awesome, unfortunately the staff couldn't share the recipe. The gumbo had a great flavor with a hint of spicy. Headed to Branson and we were looking for somewhere for lunch in the Fulton area. Checked Trip Advisor and Fontenot's popped up. Checked out their FB page and knew for two reasons we had to stop, No.1 reason being my SO is a Fontenot and No. 2 being we love Cajun food. Wasn't he surprised when we ended up here!!! Food was GREAT....and so were the Fontenot's! Yes, we had to meet them and Joe had to take pics. If they were open on Mondays we'd be stopping on our way home. Had the shrimp and crawfish poboy! Both excellent good fries too! (Get em with the gravy!) For inland seafood it tasted very fresh! Also had the gumbo which was one of the best I've had! Their beignets were different than im use to but still good! Crispy on the outside soft but dense inside. The creme was excellent! Overall a place worth eating! Second time we have waited over 30 minutes just for gumbo. I am from LA and know that it's made in big batches; if they are heating it up individually then this is not an authentic restaurant to begin with. Is it that hard to ladle two cups and send it out? It can't even take that long for the crap ends of bread that they toast and send out with it to be done. In case you are in your feelings, there were only five tables with people and there is no excuse. The last time our server was absolutely awful and management had to contact us and apologize. Everything is delicious, cooked to order, and given that special touch of love that makes everything better!
