Ma La Xiang Guo / Spicy Dried Hot Pot
    Ziyi L.

$15/person Excellent Chinese food in town. The cashier/owner had HORRIBLE attitude when I asked for special cooking instructions. MUST TRYs: #Ma La Xiang Guo, shown in pic (need to ask for a separate menu to order it) #Rice Noodle NOTE: they charge for 1.5-2 when paying with cards

Authentic, delicious and cheap. What more can you ask for? Their homemade chili oil goes with everything and it's so good. I usually get the stir fried chinese pancake. They also have many other options such as noodles, mutton soup, etc.

Been there twice, had a pork belly & rice noodles soup pot the first time, and eggplant & rice the second time. Both times are super good and authentic!!! *tip: there's a deposit for the pot that will be returned.

Hot and spicy soup -- Ma La Tang -- heheheh much like hotpot

Absolutely delishhh!! Hidden in the food court of the Faubourg, there's this restaurant that serves 'Ma la tang' -- a street version of hotpot that originated in Sichuan -- beats any hotpot whatsoever I've tasted in Canada. When ordering, you fill up a list of food you want in your 'ma la tang'. For example, I had glass noodles, fresh noodles, shrimp balls, potato, pork, fish, fresh tofu, fried tofu, and more. The complete list encompasses a lot of exciting items for which I would definitely come back for. One thing though, despite my fake Sichuan training (ex-gf forced me to eat spicy), I didn't want to (and probably couldn't) handle that heat. I took out half the sichuan chili/peppercorn paste -- so ask for half the spiciness unless you wanna sacrifice two thirds of your taste buds. And now, the broth is what makes this place a solid 5/5. It was flawless: epic flavours that came together and complemented each other very well. And for all this deliciousness, it came to about 10$ after tax... Ridiculously cheap and filled me up for a good 18h. I think I'm heading back there after wrapping up this review...which is about now.

love the place. I have been there for millions of time. It is very convenient to the students around. They offer express fondue which is a mix of veggie and noodles boiled in a savory soup. They also offer all kinds of noodle dishes such as sweet potato starch noodle, rice noodle and regular noodle with beef, pork and lamb. The number of choices is huge. The hot pot dish is also a good one, a little similar to the express fondue but with more signature combination and comes with rice. I recommend lamb rice noodle if you like lamb.

Best lamp rice noodle in town, flavourful, unique, fresh and large portions. I can have it every day the rest of my life

Still think this is the best homemade Chinese food in Montreal. The owners are extremely sweet and the food is super flavourful. The portions are hugee and the price is super affordable

Located in what is essentially a deserted shopping center, Fondue Chinoise Express is indeed a hidden gem. Ordering will be a bit difficult if you can't read Chinese but the couple who work there are very kind and helpful. The $2 deposit for your bowl and spoon is also kind of weird but I understand why they do it. My friend ordered the lunch special, which was a beef noodle soup ($6.5) that she enjoyed immensely, despite the fact that she can't handle spice. It had a variety of ingredients in it - bok choy, broccoli, bamboo tofu, and more. I had the ma la tang. To order, you fill out a paper slip either in mandarin (simplified) or Franglais, and choose what you want. Mine totaled 14.40 which I found to be a bit steep at first, considering the atmosphere. After it came out, however, I realized I definitely ordered wayyyy too much. It was so tasty that I finished the whole bowl but I had to push the cross the finish line, and I am typing this while 30 seconds away from a food coma. Also, I was excited to try their dong bei la pi but apparently they only make it in the summer, so I guess I'll have to make another visit then!

Best word to describe this little gem: home. The food, the service, the price, even the setting of the food court, all remind me of good old mainland China, in more than a good way. The quantity of food for the price is insane. I usually spend about 8$ and never leave there hungry, even though I came starving. I usually always take the fondue, but I've also tried some other dishes like the big plate chicken, which was very flavourful as I like it. The fondue is fantastic. All the ingredients are between 0.8$ to 1.2$ each, expect some kinds of fish. The flavours are just right and you can adjust the spiciness and numbness as you like. Goes very well with the soy milk that they also have. Be prepared to pay a deposit for the bowl. Bring cash if you can! No credit cards.

The Long Version: I love hand pulled noodles, so my husband and I had lunch here. He's not a fan of noodle soups but agreed to come and just have appetizers, lol. I got the small-sized Spicy Mushrooms and Chicken Noodle Soup ($13.99). I chose the #6 size noodles which is the thickest noodles they offer. My husband got the imperial rolls ($4.50 for 3) and the fried shrimp wontons ($11.99 for 10). I really enjoyed my soup, especially the thick noodles. They were chewy and the right amount of softness. There were chicken pieces in it, mushrooms and a delicious "tofu sausage." It also had 2 pieces of baby Bok Choy and some pieces of kelp. I wished there was more vegetables. The soup also had green onions and cilantro. The broth was a tiny bit spicy from the chili oil. I am happy that this soup does not have sesame seeds in it, so I didn't have to ask them to hold the sesame seeds. Lol. My only complaint would be that the broth was a bit too salty and too oily for my tastes. I still thought it was good though. My husband enjoyed his appetizers. The imperial rolls were vegetarian. I didn't have any, but they looked like nothing special to me, haha. However, the hubby liked them which is what matters. The fried shrimp wontons looked good and he liked those too. Service was pleasant and efficient. The decor is casual with some fun touches. I liked the rotating lanterns with lights on the ceiling and the drawings of a big squid and clams on the walls. I would return to try their other noodle soups and also their handmade dumplings. Review #10 (2026)

The Long Version: My husband and I had dinner here and we really enjoyed it. I initially was going to get their soup dumplings (their specialty), but when I looked at the menu, I saw that they had Laksa ($18.99), so I couldn't resist ordering that instead. My husband prefers pan-fried dumplings over soup dumplings, so he got the pork and mushroom dumplings ($14.50) and there was a $1.99 surcharge for pan-frying (the base price is for steamed). My Laksa was huge and delicious. The broth was so rich with coconut milk and a bit spicy. It was really flavourful. The noodles had a nice chew to them. The soup also contained some decent-sized shrimp, velvetized sliced chicken, cubes of tofu and a boiled egg. I wished it had some vegetables in though because I felt very unhealthy eating just starch and protein, lol. I did enjoy it though ;) I had one of my husband's dumplings and it was good. It had ground pork in it and chopped up mushrooms. There was a slight gingery taste to it. I liked it and my husband liked them too. Service was very pleasant. The server refilled our waters regularly and I like that the water had ice in it and was very cold. The restaurant is not too large and has seating on a main level then up a few steps they have 4 more tables of 4 by the front window. We walked there from our hotel, but as with pretty much all businesses in The Plateau it's street parking only. Review #209 (2025)

Amazing Chinese food…read more Crowded with an all Chinese clientele - and all young people to boot. That is almost always an excellent sign. Very few American-Chinese//Canadian-Chinese dishes on the menu - though they exist. This may be a regional Chinese restaurant but I do not recognize the region. One visit and three dishes convinced me I have to go back rather than just eating around town. In the not to be missed department: Mushrooms fried in egg yolk. These are the most interesting fried mushrooms you will ever have. They are also the richest fried mushrooms you will ever have. You will adore every single bite - and if you are lucky you can eat 1/3 of a serving before being totally full. I believe the trick here is that the batter is 100 percent egg yolk no white no nothing else. They also do a salt and pepper tofu that is creamy on the inside and crispy on the outside. How often do you see that? Braised seafood in ginger and garlic is the same dish you see in many other Chinese establishments but is lovely here. The squid is tough but the ginger is to die for. I am eager to get back. * * * * P.S. I DID get back. We ordered five more dishes. The amazingness quotient continues. Don't miss their fried spareribs.

LOL. Portions are family style so bring a group with you to share. Salt and Pepper Pork Chop - easily the best dish, great crunch and great flavor. Snow peas sautéed with Garlic was clean, fresh and crunchy. Garlic flavor wasn't overly done. Beef Stew over Baby Bok Choy was tender and beefy. The Baby Bok Choy was hidden underneath in my picture, but it was there. There was also beef tendons as well which I always enjoy. I was expecting a more flavored experience and maybe that is not what they do or I could have ordered differently. The menu is huge so it is hard to know where to start. We went here because of the good Yelp reviews. Were we arrived in Chinatown there were many other places that looked great, so we loitered at the door for a minute while deciding what to do. As we loitered a family came out and noticed us and asked if were were going to Keung Kee. We said we were thinking about it and they said just go, it is the best restaurant in Chinatown. Sold. We went in, up the stairs, waited a bit, and got a table. This is the kid of place you need to bring a lot of people because that is whet it is built for, the menu is extensive, and the portions are huge. We puzzled over the menu then ordered our food. We wanted a bottle of cold sake and the waiter brought it in an ice bucket. Nice. We started with the pork dumplings. The dumplings were very goof but came in a hot thick sweet peanut sauce. With a lighter sauce these would have been outstanding. The scallop was huge and had a bunch of stuff on it. There was some good scallop flavor but it was masked with all the stuff that tasted like old oil. The noodle dish was good but also had some old oil flavor coming from somewhere. All the meats and vegetables were nice and fresh but the good sauce I think was the source of the oil. We saw a table next to us had the pork chops and was asked, what are those? So we got that too. The chops were thin bone in with a batter fried then soaked in a vinegar sauce. These would have been good as our only item with a bowl of rice. Our co-eaters there had many good looking things. I would give this a try again but would bring a few more people so we could try more stuff. Total for all that including the sake was $100 Canadian. Not bad!
