TL;DR: I wish this could be a 5* review, as I think Bill is a very honest, competent, and experienced technician. Unfortunately, my recent experience was not good. In early July, I went to Folsom Car Stereo to see if Bill could fix or replace our car alarm. We knew it was a mess (installed decades ago by someone who clearly didn't have a lot of experience). Bill spent time to look at the system & wiring, and determined it was hopeless for a repair. We applied the diagnostic cost to a new system, and he replaced the wiring & system at the end of the month. He let us know of his plan to not renew the store lease coming due at the end of the month. He was semi-retiring, starting a new job, but will continue the car stereo/alarm work at his workshop by appointment only. So, we would be able to address any issues with the new alarm system if necessary. The install went well, and Bill ended up charging less than his original estimate. When I got home, my husband wanted to hear the siren. So we armed the alarm, and opened the door (the windows were down). The alarm did not go off. Nothing we did set off the alarm. There was a lengthy time interval between the end of July and when Bill was able to work on our car again, due to a family tragedy that Bill suffered. But he made good on his promise towards the end of September. Rather than fix the unit he installed, he replaced it with another, more powerful unit, at no additional cost. This new unit worked much better, and everything seemed great. Soon after I got home we started hearing the alarm randomly arming and disarming itself, multiple times an hour. Our first thought was that this will render the alarm system worthless as it would randomly disarm and unlock the door while unattended. We then figured out that this happened in our garage for the most time (we recorded the sound when we left the car unattended at other locations, and it only happened twice at one location, a huge parking lot full of cars). We were concerned that the door locking / unlocking scores of times daily would break the door locking mechanism, not to mention that we were annoyed by the constant chirping noise day and night. We tried to identify the cause by disabling all possible RF devices we could, and determining the RF frequencies of those we couldn't (e.g., SMUD's meter). We couldn't figure out any clear cause, so we contacted Bill via voice mails and emails. We hoped that he could diagnose if the unit's wiring or the device itself might be the cause, and fix the issue. We left numerous messages but he never responded to this day. Towards the end of October, we took the car to another place, and paid for a troubleshooting session. He fixed a few things (the valet switch wasn't working due to a loose wire, and the shock sensor was set too high). But he could not fix this problem, mainly because the issue occurs at our garage only. In the end, we had the new technician replace the alarm with a new model. So the money we paid to Bill was completely wasted. read more

My Toyota 2000 4-Runner was giving Bill a seriously, difficult--well, actually, a horrible, noooo, that word won't suffice . . . EGREGIOUS time when I chose replacing the Toyota manufacture-installed, car stereo replacing and installing in late January 2017 with a 2017 Kenwood digital, bluetooth stereo system with new speakers. For some inane, unreasonable problem, my 4-Runner didn't like the installed Kenwood stereo system so, the stereo kept registering a "WIRE ERROR" 'out of the blue,' countless times . . . just driving down the freeway, not touching the stereo . . . "WIRE ERROR"--returning practically weekly in the month of February: Poor Bill had checked, re-checked, re-wired my 4-Runner's ENTIRE stereo system, amplifier, tracing wires, re-connecting over FIVE times!!!! All the while, I really think my 4-Runner was smirking at Bill with utter contempt. BTW: I also had Bill install a car alarm system due to the defunct 2K alarm was disconnected . . . That's another soap opera I wish not divulging anytime in the future. Anyway~Returning to the car stereo soap opera drama: That's it, 4-Runner . . . Bill is going to replace the Kenwood stereo with a SECOND stereo system, ok? At this point, I was seriously thinking I should give Bill a bottle of Rogaine because I envisioned Bill pulling his ALL his hair out! Humpf~My 4-Runner wasn't going to tolerate THAT replacement stereo and MADE SURE the second, replacement stereo didn't work, either! "WIRE ERROR": Bill was replacing wires, checking this, that . . . (- _-)~Sigh! So, the first week in MARCH . . . I pray--hopefully and I do mean HOPEFULLY PRAYING, my 4-Runner will accept the THIRD (three is a charm, eh, 4-Runner?) upgraded, Kenwood stereo! My 4-Runner was being so treacherous, filled with utter contempt like Stephen King's "Christine!" Gee, 4-Runner~Why didn't you like the previous, Kenwood stereo systems!!!???? Max volume is way more than I can handle and the system handles the full dynamic range of eclectic music with ease. Super clear, piercing even. The installed sound dampening makes the vibrato of a bow on violin strings an exquisite, moving experience. Since I put 375k miles on my last ride, I look at the upgrades, although inarguably expensive, as worth it. If I put 200,000 miles on this rig, that's at least 400 hours of "concert time". Everyone once in a while you do business with the kind of people who go above and beyond to make sure your experience is the best. Last summer FCS put in my Kenwood Excelon head unit and subwoofer. Both installations were done well and the look was clean. This summer I had a Kenwood Excelon amp and Focal speakers installed. Again, well done and the look was clean. So...I did have an issue once I got the car home and began adjusting the EQ. The amp cut out and only the head unit was working. Got up the next morning thinking I'll drive to FCS and have it looked at...unfortunately the car wouldn't start. Called AAA and FCS...AAA showed and jump started the car and after speaking to FCS, Bill, drove 20 minutes to my location to make sure everything was O.K. with the install. Everything checked out and Bill was right, I just happen to have a bad battery which my car maker replaced free of charge. I was just very impressed with FCS willingness to go the extra mile(s) to make sure everything worked.
