I completed a research study at this office yesterday and walked out with $150. Thanks, Focus on Boston! I guess my name and info is in a database somewhere for research study participants, since I have little shame in earning money by sharing my opinions and feelings. For this particular study, I had to gather magazine images and talk about these ads affected my thoughts on specific brands, so since there was some prep work involved, I was contacted three or four times by phone prior to the interview, to make sure I was going to come prepared. I also got an email with detailed info on when the study was, how to get there, and what to expect. When I got to the office, I was offered a beverage and given a coupon to validate my parking in the harbor garage. I sat in a room with a video camera, recorder, and two-way mirror and knocked off the interview in a record hour and 45 minutes-- I'd been told it would take three hours. I don't recall being told prior to coming in that I'd be taped, but like I said, I have no issues with personal privacy or security when I'm able to make a quick tax-free buck during the workday, so I wasn't annoyed by that. I was also psyched that the check was handed to me on my way out-- no waiting for a mystery payment that may never come. All in all a pleasant way to spend a Wednesday afternoon out of the office. I was able to rock happy hour in Fanueil Hall afterwards, which was a bonus. read more

FOB is a great company. Ignore the reviews from people who can't show up or contact them when they don't. I receive pretty frequent emails for studies I qualify for and have been to several now. The people here are courteous and professional. In a great and easy to find location, FOB provides consumers the chance to have their opinions heard on everything from food products to technology devices to political studies and gives you the chance to make some money for doing so. Anytime I can make a buck for not much effort I'm all in! How about $85 for something I know a lot about like cat food. Owning 2 cats made this focus group pretty darn easy. Bumping into an friend from the old neighborhood who was also doing the focus group made it even more enjoyable. Parking validated which is huge! Always make sure you park in the correct garage or location to guarantee validation. Who the heck wants to pay $20-30 dollars when you are trying to make money. Kind of creepy knowing people are behind the 1 way glass watching and listening to whatever you are saying. I understand that's the point of the whole thing but still can be a little weird. These studies, you pay people to help you. And in turn you, help those people by paying them. Because you are paying these people, it does not give you the right to send such emails. I have participated in their market research forums several times in the past the last time being about six years ago. On those occasions I felt that the compensation was worth the effort. Since that time I have been contacted by them about participating in other focus groups and have not appreciated the experience at all. I accept that sometimes I don't provide what they may be looking for in a particular focal group wether it be my personal experience with the subject matter or other reasons. What I don't like and actually loathe is their new practice of subjecting me to a lengthy phone survey before disqualifying me as a participant. I have little doubt that the ' qualification survey ' is ultimately used as market research and as such the surveyee should be pre-informed of this and receive some form of compensation for the time committed to the survey which can last up to fifteen minutes. I find it a dubious practice to extract all this information from potential participants only to tell them ' thanks but no thanks.' One can't help but feeling used when this occurs. Because of this I asked Focus of Boston to remove my name from their contact list. read more

I participated in a study last week. AFTER I completed the study, I received repeated phone calls and harassing emails demanding that I sign a "confidentiality agreement". Prior to the study, there were phone interviews and email confirmation/communications, but NEVER did they once mention the fact I have to sign an agreement. They only told me this after I have already given them my time and opinion. This is deceptive and unacceptable practice. read more
