When the receptionist brought it up, I asked if it cost extra; she said yes, and then told her I wasn't interested. You'd think it would end there. After Dr. Breeden finished the main portion of the exam, she made it a point to get up, close the door, and lecture me about the importance of dilation, imploring scare tactics, and comparing it to having vitals checked. This was just insulting. It's my health, and it's my money, and I have the right to opt out. I'd like to think that professionals could take a hint that money is clearly an issue for me without me having to say HEY, I'M FUCKING BROKE, I'M JUST HERE TO GET A PRESCRIPTION SO I CAN BUY CONTACT LENSES. The icing on the cake was not being given (or emailed) my new prescription at the end of the visit. After I emailed them asking for it, there was another little passive aggressive cherry on top -- part of my prescription was left blank, and I had to dig up my old prescription to find the number (the BC, or base curve, which is either 8.4 or 8.8 when ordering contacts online). Went in for an annual eye exam while wildfire smoke was in town. My eyes were kinda bothered by the…read moresmoke and the doctor saw it. The conversation should have stopped there. Instead health insurance was billed with a medical exam when its quite obvious what caused it: the smoke. I didn't need a doctor to tell me that. The prescription the doctor gave was for over the counter re-wetting drops. The purpose of my visit was an annual eye exam, not to diagnose why my eyes were partially red. It's fairly obvious why. I'm walking through in one of the most polluted cities in the world on the way to the optometrist. The doctor should have said "Wildfire smoke is irritating your eyes. Come back next week or when the smoke clears for an exam." This is how my old eye doctor would have handled this and he operated until retirement, had a great practice, was passionate about optometry. What do I get here? A business that operates like it's run by private equity. They did a bait and switch. Instead of what I expected to pay for an eye exam, they billed a more expensive health insurance co-pay. This seems more like a money making strategy and insurance fraud than looking out for my well-being. When I called for clarification the woman I spoke with was not helpful and she wouldn't reverse the health insurance claim. I was honestly frustrated when I found out there was no recourse and the woman I spoke with was not understanding. She didn't treat me as a person seeking health care, more like a customer that needs to go away. My Optic turned a $10 eye exam into a $60 health insurance co-pay on a whim. I didn't go in looking for help with my eye dryness due to wildfire smoke. I wanted an annual eye exam. I didn't ask for the services they billed me. The doctor didn't make it clear what was going on with billing in the exam room, didn't give me a choice. Had I been given the choice I would have opted out and come back later for an annual eye exam. I looked into this more and on the chart it says the doctor diagnosed me with "eye dryness due to excessive use of contact lenses." I hadn't worn contact lenses in weeks not did I wear any into the appointment. The woman threatened to charge me the full amount for the visit instead of charging health insurance as a possible conclusion. I think they are committing insurance fraud. This experience left me wanting to dispute the claim and still needing an eye exam, questioning if I should even go to eye doctors if the lot of them are going to practice business this way. They need to make it really clear they can turn your eye exam into a medical exam and give you the opportunity to deny or accept. Instead, it's confusing and you end up spending more money than you intended. When I was asking why the insurance needed to be billed, I felt pushed around. No one was explaining anything properly. This place used to have good customer service and good doctors. Now I'm not so sure.

The quality of the patient education was exceptional, and I really felt heard and seen by my provider (pun intended). Parking is easy on the adjacent streets and it was easy to make an appointment online. Pricing was described in full transparency, and I was able to refuse additional services that didn't feel necessary or applicable to me. I was able to use my vision insurance very easily too. She and her team not only pointed out things that other eye professionals had never mentioned, but they were happy to explain things in a very comprehensive manner, rather than the cursory explanations offered by some medical professionals. The office is more than an hour away, but that two-plus-hour round trip was more than worth it.

But if you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally to the transgender community, I encourage you to go elsewhere. Blink and Eyes on Broadway are both owned by members of the LGBTQ+ community, so there's really no reason to patronize this clinic as an LGBTQ+ individual. Dr Uhlig and Nina, I wish you the best in learning gender affirming care practices for your clinic. Maybe one day you can treat gender diverse folks, but it is clearly beyond your capabilities as medical providers currently; a fact that is both sad and also entirely preventable. The experience has always been…read moregreat: eye exams were quick and informative, front desk employees were always helpful and attentive. However this year's annual visit was anything but. It may be due to the change of ownership (I believe it happened either late last year or this year), but my experience with the front desk employee (Sam) was not great. Per usual, the exam was quick, the new doctor was nice and informative, and the other front desk employee (male with glasses) was extremely attentive and helpful. The issue came about a few days after my exam when I decided to use my annual frame allowance for sunglasses (I've had LASIK correction for a few years now). I called the office, Sam answered and I explained what I wanted to do - I've been utilizing this allowance for years. Sam looked up my insurance and asked if it was for prescription glasses. I said, "no, non-prescription". She then quickly told me that I couldn't use my insurance allowance for that purpose. I asked if the insurance had changed in the last year because I've been doing this for years. She said no, it's always been like that and that there's nothing they could do. After letting her know to double check the clauses of the allowance, she checked and noticed that clients with lasik procedures are allowed to use their insurance for sunglasses. She didn't apologize for initially providing me with incorrect information, she just went on and asked what frames I wanted. I told her the model and she noted they don't carry those. I thought I had gotten the same brand from them the year before and said "but I got them last year from you". Quicker than lighting she had already pulled up my prior orders to correct me: no I had not ordered that brand with them! She seemed annoyed that I was even asking. She proceeded to tell me that if I wanted that brand I would have to go elsewhere and referred me to a competitor. She didn't give me options to go online and use a prescription to order them myself, or anything else. I asked for my prescriptions (mine and my husband's) and headed to their competitor. Blessing in disguise - the front desk employee at this new place was a delight, the optician helped us get the sunglasses we needed without much hassle and we proceeded to schedule our 2026 annual eye check with them. This experience may not be representative of the entire practice, but it shows you that customer retention is just about being nice and patient with your clients.
