Tried out this restaurant this evening and are so glad we did. We'd been to the Flying Tomato a couple of times when they were located on Meridian. This was a big improvement. The food was delicious and of decent proportions. The price was also very reasonable. I had the open faced crab melt, and my wife had the Ragin' Cajun pasta. My B-I-L had the cheese ravioli. We all left full and happy. Our server was awesome. Great service without being hovering. She also gave us some delicious fried donut holes for our birthday girl. I really hope this place lasts as it's a must needed sit-down type restaurant. read more

It was one large piece of lettuce (that was brown and soggy) with a handful of greens tossed on top to cover it. I ordered the fried ravioli, a single crab cake, lasagna, kid's penne with Alfredo, and cannoli. First every item, but the cannoli, was way over salted. To the point of my tongue tingling. The marinara brackish and caustic. The fried ravioli were palatable crispy outside and gooey inside. The crab cake was meh. The penne was again salty but that wasnt as bad as the "Alfredo" sauce... In all my 43 years of being on this planet, I have never seen, heard of or tasted yellow Alfredo...YELLOW!! Yello? Do you ya'll know how to cook? The layers of flavors included slightly pickled minced garlic from a rank crusty jar thats been in the back of the fridge, since Lord knows when, with a harsh astringent, slightly chemical finish. The lasagna noodles were briny, either over cooked and mush or extra crispy; stale and rubbery, or dry and undercooked. Sweet Baby Jesus save us! This place makes Olive Garden look like a 2 Michelin Star restaurant. I would only give the food 1 star but the cannoli was pretty tasty. read more

I just tried Flying Tomato for the first time. The restaraunt was clean, it was pretty empty but it was 4 o clock on a Sunday. The service was friendly and attentive. I ordered the open face crab melt. The flavor was tasty but I barely tasted crab, it was more so the artichoke dip that overtook the sandwich, it still tasted good I just expected a little more crab flavor. My brother ordered the Marco Polo Pasta, the portion size was a little small but the sauce was really good. I would try this place again! read more

My friend and I had lunch at Flying Tomato, Spanaway today for thet first time. Nothing about this restaurant would motivate us to return. The service was non-existent after our order was taken. The pop I ordered cost me $4.20. Normally, a refill is offered. As I wrote above, the server never returned to even ask how our food was. Speaking of food, it tasted like it had been in a freezer and then nuked in a microwave. Maybe our experience was the result of just poor lunchtime staffing in the kitchen and front of house. We arrived at the restaurant on a Sunday evening at about 5:30, we were seated promptly. Our waitress was over to introduce herself and ask about drinks. We settled in and began looking at the menu, albeit a smaller menu. I ordered the tortellini in the tomato cream sauce and we ordered breadsticks for the table. The breadsticks arrived warm and fresh with a good size bowl of marinara for dipping. The breadsticks had a wonderful flavor, the sauce as well. The freshness was tasted in the sauce, a slightly different style of sauce. Wonderful flavor but heavy on the garlic which isn't bad but if you are not a fan of garlic this may not be for you. The food arrived rather quickly which was nice, our dinner was great. Perfect serving sizes, wonderful flavor, and the look was presented beautifully. As far as the ambiance of the restaurant, it looks like a nice little Italian cafe, clean and bright interior with modern touches. If you ever went to the Little Park restaurant, it has a similar layout but much cleaner and brighter. I would highly recommend coming here to eat, prices are standard for Italian, serving was great, we will be back. read more

We enjoyed the Graham location, so very excited to try the new Spanaway restaurant. We chose to visit for our anniversary and enjoyed it very much. We went early, slightly before 5 and were the only ones in the dining room, but the place had filled up by the time we left. We were seated quickly and our server (I think her name was Paris) was super friendly and attentive. She took our drink order as soon as we sat down, and appetizer & dinner orders were taken as soon as we were ready. Our drinks came out fast and the appetizer (Mozarella wedges) as well. As we were finishing our appetizer, the entrees were served to our tables by the chef. We had the lasagna and the fish and chips. We finished with some of the best cannolis I've had. The shell was super crisp and the filling cream and delicious. Perfection. I wish I had taken a better picture of that, but we dug in and it was too late. This area truly needed this little gem of a restaurant. I had never been in the Little Park, but can only imagine the transformation the building went through. Nicely done. My only two complaints and they are minor - I miss the paper & crayons on the table that they had in Graham. I always drew a heart with my husband and my initials on our anniversary. I also missed the bread and tomato butter. But I cannot complain about what I did receive. Appetizer, lasagna, fish and chips and dessert were all great. read more

I was traveling north after picking up some materials for my business from Ace hardware. I looked to my left as I was passing the Flying Tomato and noticed two large banners hanging from the front of the building. The banners read " OPEN FOR BREAKFAST". I started to think this might be a good day for me to try this place. So I called my daughter and asked her if she had breakfast yet. She hadn't and would love to have some French Toast. So I went to pick her up and we went to the Flying Tomato! First impression was very good. Friendly greet and seat. Started looking over the menu and my daughter found the french toast but then saw the waffles and thought maybe she will go with that instead. It took us about ten minutes to make our selection. Our server then came to take our order and responded with "I'm sorry but we have stopped serving breakfast for the day" or words to that effect. WOW Really! Breakfast times should be listed in the menu! I double checked and it wasn't in the menu. The hostess did not mention it when we were seated. So 10 minutes of our time as well as ten minutes of the Tomato's time was wasted. Seat time is big business after all. It took 20 minutes to make choices. If there was a crowd waiting to be seated they would have a longer wait. How many tickets a day at a certain average price shows your amount of success. We both had the Flying Club. It was pretty cool. It did not disappoint. So I will be back today to try the breakfast food. So stay tuned for another review later. So we went back for the breakfast food. I ordered the Southern breakfast that consisted of "SOS" with sausage, eggs and, in my case, home fries. My daughter had the french toast she wanted so bad yesterday. The SOS had a very pleasant taste and was kinda warm. I couldn't eat the home fries as they were cold. The sausage was only warm and the eggs were cold. The daughters french toast did not impress her enough to eat all three slices of bread. She ate half of it and boxed the other half for her boyfriend. I think that for the price it should have had four slices of bread. We then went back that evening for dinner. I told my daughter to NOT order pizza because I want to try that on a different occasion. She had the Tortellini Pasta and was not disappointed. It was hot and she felt, was delish. I tried a bite and I liked the texture and the heat. Personal opinion of the dish was a bit bland for me. She ate it all but again, in my opinion, not enough food. The price was in comparison with The Olive garden but it didn't come with any bread or salad. For enough food we would have had to pad the bill. Which BTW was $100.00 with tip for both of us. A quick edit. I bought a "Yeah Buddy" cheeseburger to go for her boyfriend. So it would have $80 for the two of us. I had Tuscan Chicken. Taste was great and it came hot. Again though, not enough food. Bread sticks, or garlic bread and salad would have been great. I'm thinking that I will stick to the Olive Garden for my Pasta nights. As a business owner maybe Gary should go to the Olive Garden for a reference of the competition. Or for a more local reference, Marzano Italian Restaurant on Garfield in Parkland. Both places you leave full and have some leftovers for a snack later! I want to also let the readers of this know that I am Kevin S. but I have no idea why it says from San Fransisco. I have lived in the Spanaway area since 2006 and own property down the street that I lease to two different tenants. I just made an edit and it no longer puts me in Frisco. Also let it be known that my original 4 stars was about my first experience here. I removed one star for the whole no reference to breakfast times. After 3 visits my review moves to 2 stars overall. BTW I used to come here when it was Little Park. I quit coming because I always had a chill down the back of my neck no matter where I sat. The remodel made it more comfortable when I was in a booth on the southeast side. But when I was in a booth on the northwest side.....there was the cold air down my back again. Maybe point the vent up and use ceiling fans to work the airflow? Not sure of that but I am sure I won't sit in that area again. More after I try the pizza ;) read more

Just wow. I went to this place the first week they were open. I had high hopes. The first go around had some bumps but we just chalked it up to being new and not working out all the kinks in the system. Issues with service, plates being incomplete and the servers having trouble getting all the entrees out together. No one wants to be starting in while the rest of your party is finishing up. The food was good and the fact that is was a chef and not a line cook gave us the impression good things were to come. Just give it time and it will work itself out. Well....., 8 months later and no go. I will not be back. Some of the food is good, some not so much. The plates make no sense and you feel like the dish isn't finished. I ordered a chicken fried steak. Supposed to be served with roasted red potatoes. I get it and no potatoes. Just some homemade "chips" that are being used as a grease absorber for the steak. Not a side but an over fried burnt greasy garnish. No Veg at all. No side salad option, nothing. Just a big ol piece of meat on the pate and no sides and for damn near 20 bucks to boot. You couldn't throw some green beans or steamed broccoli on there? Another person in our party ordered the Oriental chicken salad. Fist off, I felt uncomfortable as hell saying "oriental" instead of "asian". That needs to be addressed but my issue was it was nothing but some brown romaine in a bowl with canned chicken on top (i swear it was that kirkland canned chicken you get at Costco), sprinkled with sesame dressing. That is a $20 salad? No color, no texture, no "asian" ingredients whatsoever. No one at the table would eat it (really concerned about it being safe) and we could tell the waitress has dealt with this issue before. She didn't hesitate to take it off our bill. We didn't ask, she just did it. Honestly for the price, the hype and having an actual chef...I expected a lot more than brown lettuce. There was this "I don't give a crap" air about the place. It was obvious that the tables of all men got all the attention from wait staff. I literally watched our server "hang out" at 3 tables with all men just chatting away while another couple with a child couldn't get a soda refill for 15 minutes. She actually only checked on my table once the whole time. This place could be a gold mine of income and easily become a neighborhood staple but the owners are throwing it down the drain. The food IS good when they put the effort in but you can't serve half assed plates and canned ingredients and expect a positive reaction. I will say that our server, dispite giving more attention to other tables, was good. You could just tell the friendliness was an act and she really hated her job. Fake smiles all around. I did tip her well because one, she tried and 2 what is going on in the kitchen is not her fault. Don't bother wasting your time or money. Whoever the "chef" is needs to wake up before he is facing an empty dining room...permanently. BTW, Has this guy ever heard of vegetables beyond parsley? read more

This was my first experience at Flying Tomato in Spanaway was I was very impressed. The food was delicious and plentiful. The service was great, checking on how our meals were and offering to refill beverages. This location used to be a very rundown restaurant but the new owners have remodeled and upgraded everything. It doesn't at all resemble the the old, tired restaurant previously there. I recommend this restaurant and will definitely return for their good food, great service, and comfortable atmosphere. i am so disappointed I was really looking forward to some red sauce on some penne noodles. I ordered a meal with marina sauce and requested no Parmesan cheese. The server said all of the red sauce not only has the cheese but also Alfredo sauce mixed in to it. Randy and I went and tried the new "Flying Tomatoes restaurant in spanaway. I was not impressed. Randy liked the lasagna but I did not, when we first got there I asked the lady which is better lasagna or spaghetti and she said lasagna so I thought I'd try it but, didn't like it at all. So she asked me if I liked it and I told her no I really didn't and she asked me if I wanted something else. So I said yeah I'll go ahead and try this spaghetti and meatballs and then she told me just to keep my lasagna and take it home for Randy because he liked it. The spaghetti and meatballs was nothing to write home about, but it was better than the lasagna. I thought the prices were very expensive for what you get, it was $18.99 for spaghetti and meatballs and then $18.99 for lasagna. I was totally surprised for that amount of money that you do not get any breadsticks, garlic bread or salad. Just the main dish and they don't put much sauce on your spaghetti if you want more, then that you have to pay $3 extra which would make it almost $22 for a serving of spaghetti with two meatballs. I think it'll be a while before we go back again. Service was great though. read more
