We were excited to have a new restaurant in Spanaway as our options are limited. We were specifically excited about an Italian spot, as there are none around. The first time we all ordered pasta dishes. I ordered the chicken parm, as this is my go to test out a new spot. I find it hard for a restaurant to mess up chicken parm. But they did here. My child ordered the kids spaghetti dish. The marinara sauce is just brutal. It's obviously jar sauce and not homemade. In fact it's probably the worst marinara sauce I've ever had. Willing to give this place another chance, we went back recently to give their pizza a try. You can't mess up a pizza, right? Wrong. No flavor whatsoever and highly overpriced. I went to Flying Tomato after they first opened in Spanaway. They seemed to specialize in Italian food, but didn't offer any soup. On April 2, 2025 I decided to give them one more try and our family went to celebrate my mom's birthday. EPIC FAILURE ‼ First thing I asked was if they now offered soup, and was thrilled to see they did, however, the soup that day was "onion soup". I like French onion soup, however their soup was plain onion soup - broth with onions. WUT⁉ Yuck! My brothers ordered sandwich meals, and my mom and I split a "chopped salad". Shortly after the food arrived, the manager appeared at our table holding a plate with sliced cheese and said the kitchen forgot to put cheese on BOTH their sandwiches. The bread had no mayo which made it dry. Every chopped salad I've ever seen has all the lettuce, veggies, meat and cheese chopped bite size and tossed in Italian type dressing. This one, however, came with huge chunks of lettuce, a couple veggies and "oriental " dressing which was basically just balsamic vinegar! I called the manager over and asked where the meats and cheese were. The kitchen left that off too, so he came back with a plate of 6 pieces of salami, cheese and pepperoncini. Party of 6 ! My sister and all our kids (ages 14-5) came to have breakfast. The new remodel is beautiful! The food was super delicious. All of us ordered something different. Pancakes were SO good. Waffle was great, my breakfast sandwich was delicious. And the teenager ordered the stuffed French toast which took us back to the fair it was so good. Give this place a try, really. I had heard mixed reviews so decided to try it tonight. Started out well with quick service and a decent entree. We got the Tuscan Chicken. Pasta was good. Chicken was a little dry and needed more seasoning. We ordered the dessert cannoli trio. It was on the menu as a cannoli, a brownie and spumoni. We got a dry cannoli, a delicious brownie and a scoop of vanilla ice cream with hersheys syrup. It was laughable. 20 dollars for the pasta and 13 dollars for a 5 dollar dessert. This review will be for the new Pacific Avenue location, not the original Meridian location. We stopped in very soon after their opening, on a Saturday at 5pm, after they had a few days to get in a groove. My hope was that all the bugs were worked out and we could see a true view of the overall experience. Let's start with the obvious, the building renovation and new look/feel of this location. Those who have been around the area for a while will know the former restaurant and how dingy/dirty it had become. I watched them tear half this building down to the ground and rebuild the old rotten parts into what is now a very modern, good looking space. The outside still has a bit of the old feel, but the inside is completely new. It looks very nice and it is very clean. We were greeted by the hostess and added our name to the wait list. It became apparent right away that, like most places these days, the wait list was less about available tables and more about available staff. They are clearly still struggling to staff the place at full capacity and a large "Now Hiring" sign on the front window affirmed that. No problem, I get it. After a short wait we were seated at our table and we met our waiter, who eventually told us he was new and had never waited tables before, so we were having fun making our way through his new adventure together. We all start somewhere. He did a great job, we had no complaints aside from him talking very softly and having trouble hearing him at times. I'm sure he'll overcome that in time. Getting to the food, we started off with the Hand Cut Mozzarella Wedges, because this indicates these are house-made not vendor purchased. We were very happy with this appetizer and you could tell it was made in house. The breading was very flavorful and het cheese had the perfect gooey stretchiness to it. the marinara was a bit flat, but this one was good! For our entrees, I went with the Mediterranean Ziti and the wife chose the Chicken Parmesan (served with Spaghetti). You could tell that the pasta was not made in house, and in fact, the spaghetti was a major letdown. Luckily she ordered that dish for the chicken, not the pasta and the chicken was a hit. I snuck a bite of the Chicken Parmesan and it was one of the best Chicken Parms I've ever had. Perfect amount of breading, great flavor in the sauce, very well done. My Ziti was okay, nothing to write home about. Again, purchased noodles and the sauce was a bit flat. Not bad, just not amazing. I should have ordered it with chicken or something because it defiantly needed a protein on it. But that was my fault because I had intended to do that, but simply forgot when ordering. So that's on me. We also indulged in a couple desserts as well, sharing the Cannoli and what the menu claims is "The Bets Cheesecake Ever". Now, as a guy who literally stops for cheesecake and someone who makes my own cheesecakes, you better bring it if you tell me it's the best cheesecake ever. This bar is pretty high, and that's a bold claim, so I had to order it. The Cannoli was okay, the filling was great but the shell was a bit thicker than expected which gave it a tough chew if that makes sense. The cheesecake? It was good, but I don't know if it was the best ever. But you put that on your menu, so I'm holding your feet to the fire here. Is there any of this that I wouldn't order again? No. It was all solid enough. But next time I'll make sure to order a protein on that Ziti. Now, I'm gonna gripe a bit about the pricing, while keeping in mind that we live in a post-CIVID world where literally everything costs more. But, the two of us had an appetizer, 2 drinks, 2 entrees and 2 desserts and it was $100 before a tip. I'm not trying to get too "boomer" here, but there's no way a plate of noodles with some spinach and sauce should be $20, that's a $14 dish in my opinion, tops. The Chicken Parm? For vendor purchased noodles with some sauce over them I'd be looking for that dish to be more like $18, not $20. Pre-purchased noodles just aren't worth those prices so I'd knock a couple bucks off for the pasta being a side here. $100 for 2 people is a bit of a stretch for this quality of food. If you're making your own noodles in house, sure, I get it. But let's be honest, you're not. So to recap, or for the TL:DR crowd, we had great service from a crew that is clearly still trying to find their footing. We enjoyed the renovated space and thought it was very inviting and well decorated without being "too much". We had good food and we're happy to have a pasta joint in the neighborhood. It's something different and we welcome that. Will we be coming back? Yeah, at some point. But these prices have us pausing for a bit. This is "special occasion" pricing to us. You're crowding Melting Pot prices and not offering that kind of dining experience. I could even go to Trapper's Sushi and spend less for dinner. read more

My daughter ordered the Asian chicken salad, and the chicken wasn't fresh grilled or even a chicken strip. It was cold slimy it tasted like canned chicken, it was extremely disappointing. Also, their cheesy bread tasted disgusting, I don't know how you could go wrong with making good cheesy bread, but I do believe that little Caesars cheesy bread is way better and way cheaper! I ordered a Caprese salad and it had cheap Roma tomatoes and a few pieces of fresh mozzarella for $12 extremely disappointed for this salad. We decided to try out the new Flying Tomato. We arrived and the entry way was nice. There were a few people ahead of us but when we were standing there next in line we were not acknowledged by the hostess or the wait staff. When another couple patrons came in they started helping them first. I said excuse me we were here first. We were seated promptly Onto the food..... So we ordered the clams for an appetizer. This was awful. They had to have purchased the cheapest frozen clams available on the market. PLEASE in all things holy stop purchasing these clams! Even grocery store butcher counter clams are 100% better. They were not even Manila Clams. The broth was awful. There was absolutely no flavor, none. Clams are usually made with a broth that is butter, schalots garlic, white wine, salt, pepper, parsley all brought together with 2 triangles of garlic bread or bread sticks to soak up that delicious broth while consuming the clams. No. This was not it. You need to have someone in the kitchen who understands the fundamentals of this dish. All for $12.99. Which the price isnt bad. But id be willing to pay more for a delicious bowl of clams. P.S. take the tomato out of this dish. Also, you have this beautiful pizza oven why not utilize it to make beautiful made bread sticks or table bread you can offer your customers while they decide on what they'd like to eat. Onto the Entrees... I ordered the Spaghetti and Meatballs. I added the additional meatballs for the dish as I knew i wouldnt be able to eat the whole dish and i could split it up for lunches. I had such high hopes. Lets start at the meatballs. They are decent sized. They are okay. They are a bit on the spicy side. The Marinara the meatballs sits in is flat. It needs seasoning and a thicker consistency. And there could be a bit more served with the bowl of noodles. There was more sauce on the plate of extra mearballs then was on the noodles. $16.99 for main dish and $6.99 for two extra meatballs. My husband ordered the Grilled Mango chicken. He said it was okay not something to write home about. The chicken looked like it was made from frozen. I wanted the new Flying Tomato to hit this out of the park. But it struck out. The burgers look good, but they were flavorless, I'd bet they were frozen patty's. They are perfectly shaped, not grilled, all uniform, they scream frozen patty. The opening of this location was a long time coming. It is clean, fresh and has a pleasant atmosphere. The staff was attentive, friendly and prompt. The menu had numerous choices. We had the Old World Meatball Sandwich and the Pick a Pasta with both spaghetti and sauces were Marinara and Mizithra and Chicken Fettucine (not photographed). They were Delicious! The pizza comes highly recommended by nearby customers, as does anything on the breakfast menu (before 11am). We will be back to try out other foods, and look forward to it! read more

So we have given this place 3 try's.... NO MORE!! We keep hoping it gets better but it doesn't. Yesterday my husband got their spaghetti with meat sauce and meatballs and a soda. I got the pick 2 pasta... fettuccini with Alfredo sauce and spaghetti with Mizrith. After our meal was served we asked if it came with any garlic bread or something? The Cheeseburger has very fresh ingredients and very thick as you can see in the picture, the French Fries where so crispy and delicious. They were so thick, I'm not sure if that's to much cheese or cream or what but something was definitely off and I can honestly say I took 2 bites of each pasta and to the trash they went. Came in for dinner tonight and was helped by Shellie. First, I had been so excited for months driving by, waiting for the renovations of the space to finish and it was worth the wait. Inside the restaurant was clean and modern with a very family friendly feel to it that just welcomes the neighborhood. Next, our food came out in a really timely manner. The taste was fresh and had a homestyle feel to it. The cherry on top was it was reasonably priced and the quantity of food matched the quality! Last but by certainly, no means the least, Shellie was super friendly, personable, accommodating and attentive. Her service is the definition of great, welcoming customer experience. She was able to answer questions clearly, helped prep our togos, and explained how everything was boxed up while making recommendations for how to best enjoy them from home. 10/10 would recommend and will definitely be back based off the experience Shellie provided alone! read more
