Flying monkey was decent. We tried the classic and red velvet whoopie. It was fun to try something new but it's not something I would need to try again. They were a little dry in parts with not enough filling on the edges. Just wasn't blown away by any means. The guy working the counter was friendly and had $2 waters which was cheaper than most other places I saw. Not something that I'm dying to get back to but would eat one if it showed up in front of me.
I got a brownie for 4 dollars and it was very rich and flavourful. It was also very fudgey and thick which was very nice and it was also cold. I want to try their other stuff next! The line wasnt long at all and theres seating near this stall.
Reading Terminal Market has so many gems hidden within its walls. Flying Monkey Bakery is one of them. I got a variety of goodies to bring home after a few days of meetings downtown. We tried the cupcakes, Elvis cake, s'mores bars, and whoopie pies. The whoopie pies were good. Solid cake flavor and good texture, but could have used more filling for sure. The Elvis cake was a delightful surprise. The cake texture is a little closer to a poundcake, is banana flavored, and stuffed with chocolate chips. Add peanut butter buttercream and you're in for a real treat. The cupcakes were solid too. The real surprise of the bunch was the s'mores bar. It has a beautiful graham cracker crust with the perfect amount of sweetness. The marshmallow is incorporated in a way that is creamy instead of sticky. I would absolutely get these again and again. The staff was a little slow, but it looked like they were trying to pull some things out of the oven which may have accounted for the delay.,
Flying Monkey is a staple here in the city of brotherly love. Located inside RTM. You can't miss them. They have the huge awning with their name. I came to get their iconic whoopie pies. It's small compared to other places but it's good. Like really good. Chocolate whoopee wasn't overly sweet, the filling was a perfect blend of sweet cream cheese icing which sealed the deal for me. They have freshly baked cookies. My favorite is snickerdoodle. They are also famous for their pound cake. The price is kinda steep $16. Service is great here . I forgot who helped me but he took the time to help me, narrow down my choices. I wish they made regular rice crispy treats. If they add this, I'm sure it will sell fast. I cant eat too much food with food dye cuz it makes my tummy hurt :( Please make rice crispy treats without the dyes.. or better yet add peanut butter! Im definitely coming back!
Apparently this bakery has the best Whoopie pies. Decided to try out the classic. Not really the biggest fan of whoopie pies to begin with so not sure how much I can critique but I found the cake part to be a bit doughie. Not sure if that's how it's supposed to be, but I wasn't mind blown. The bakery had many goods though and looked good.
tl;dr the artisanal whoopie pies at this RTM bakery are small and mostly ordinary -- at least they only set you back a few bucks Flying Monkey Bakery is a famous Reading Terminal Market bakery promising small-batch desserts made with fresh ingredients. Flying Monkey was opened in 2010, and, while they serve many baked goods, the shop is best known for the whoopie pie lineup. Philadelphia Magazine has recognized the dessert as the city's most popular snack, and the Classic Whoopie Pie was even the most recent champion of RTM's "Market Madness" bracket. The bakery itself is in the bustling center of the Market, at the side of the main seating area. The shop is lined with a scalloped white awning pressed with Flying Monkey's silhouette logo. The trim, top-lit bakery display, moderately filled with classic and seasonal treats, is flanked by stainless steel counters and purple tile on either side. The stall is filled with shelves of ingredients and cooling racks of baked goods. During a recent visit to RTM, my mom and I were looking for a light dessert, and Flying Monkey's whoopie pie fit the bill. While we briefly considered the award-winning Classic, the Espresso Whoopie Pie was calling our name. Despite the general hustle and bustle of the Market, Flying Monkey had no line, so we quickly secured our treat. Immediately, we were impressed by the moist, light cake, leaning more toward a cupcake than a brownie. However, we were upset that the hefty buns overwhelmed the stingy schmear of vaguely espresso-ish filling. At $3.50 each, the whoopie pies are relatively affordable compared to many RTM vendors -- but, between the small portion and so-so execution, the satisfaction factor is sorely lacking. For larger, more traditional, and way cheaper whoopie pies, opt for Beiler's bakery at the northwest corner of the Market.
Butter cake is FANTASTIC here! I visited here while playing tourist with my tourist family members. This was my first time having butter cake. My family raves about butter cake and how good it is. So, I had to try it. It was the first time trying it so why not at a place inside the Reading Terminal Market! The whoopie pies, are no whoopie pies out of Maine, but they were still good. Customer service was great. They were helpful, and quick. I did read some of the other reviews and I am sorry those individuals low stars hurt Flying Monkey over something that could have been handled elsewhere and/or a little education about their products would have given a better understanding.
This bakery is inside of Reading Terminal Market. They have all sort of cool stuff including speciality stuff such as gluten free items So many tasty treats. We had brownie and cookies This is the friendliest bakery ever!! My son ordered a few items and the staff was so kind to him. I'll definitely be back.
Every October I eat something with pumpkin in it every single day. This spot was a great find and had a ton of pumpkin foods to choose from. Our interaction with the person at the register was great. I feel like a lot of reviews are about that, so I am getting that out of the way. Food wise I am leaning towards a 3, but I will give a 4 since I didn't try all their year round offerings. Doesn't seem fair. But lessgoooo: The Pumple Cake was a mistake lol It sounded like this epic delicious crazy thing and it was a total let down. Great idea, but I don't think the execution is really possible. The pumpkin whoopie pie was fine though. There are a ton of other things to choose from, so I'd find it hard to believe you can't find something!
we were at reading terminal market for "afternoon tea" i'll call it...since it was january, it was BRRR cold outside so we took some reprieve inside reading terminal market. i really wanted something sweet, but more importantly, something special to philly, so after perusing many dessert vendors and browsing/comparing menus, i chose this bakery b/c i wanted to try the butter cake, something we don't have in california, and what i'm told, is special to pennsylvania! the gentleman who assisted me was super friendly, answering this west coast gal's questions and making recommendations. i got a slice of the butter cake ($4.50) and a red velvet whoopie pie ($3.50) while hubby grabbed a table for 2 in the general seating area. reading terminal market is all about communal seating areas after you purchase your food. the butter cake was heavenly, so rich and buttery and the crust was crispy-chewy, and slightly salty which complemented the sweetness and richness of the cake. while red velvet is more of a southern style dessert, the red velvet whoopie pie is most definitely a pennsylvania treat. pennsylvania is known for their whoopie pies, again, something i can't easily find in california. i loved the taste of cream cheese buttercream in between two soft red velvet cookies...YUMMMM! i wish i had more stomach space to eat more, b/c i honestly would have bought more pastries to try...alas we already ate so much during the day, and still had dinner yet to come! highly, highly recommend coming to this bakery if you are at reading terminal market!
Year ago I first stopped by Flying Monkey to try the pumple cake. A mix of cake and pie. It was so disappointing that I hadn't been back in years. I don't think they even sell it anymore. On national chocolate cupcake day I decided to give it another try and bought two chocolate cupcakes. The cupcakes were dry and the icing hard and inedible. The worst cupcakes I've ever eaten. I'll stick with the Amish bakeries in Reading Terminal from now on.
I called to place an order for my girlfriends cake which was delicious! It was more than enough, so much so that we gave the rest of it to the staff where we had it served. They also give you the cake cold so that it can stay out to room temperature so it helped with transportation and surprise planning. The cake was a custom cookies m cream based cake with vanilla inside. The bites were just so soft and light with each bite. The cake is very dangerous if you lack control or have a sweet tooth because that icing was perfectly nailed on the cookies and cream flavor.
This is another place on those lists of do-not-miss-while-at-reading lists all over the internet. Overall it was pretty good. The price point is a little high for the size, $3 per whoopie pie. They serve them cold (for traveling), make sure to let them know you are eating it then so they give you ones that have been thawed out (icing smooths out and the cake is softer). Whoopie pies are essentially 2 small round cakes with a buttercream type frosting in the middle. The Irish cream was fantastic! Highly recommend that but the red velvet cake did not have that much flavor and the cookies and cream frosting is only ok. Overall, would go again for the Irish cream and try another flavor but it is a little pricey given the size. read more
Philadelphia a is a great city for Vegans. There is one drawback though: Reading Terminal Market's dearth of vegan options. Reading Terminal Market was one of the first places I spent a lot of time in Philly. My future wife and I would get the smoked turkey special at the Hatville Farms sandwich counter and I would enjoy browsing a local institution that my native New York had no match for. Alas, Reading Terminal is not very vegan-friendly even in the year 2013! Even the Basic 4 Veggie stand closed! The good news is that a quite good vegan dessert can be found there at Flying Monkey. Flying Monkey regularly has three vegan options: a chocolate chip cookie that I have not tried, vegan whoopie pies which are good and a chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting. I will focus on the cupcake because that is the best. The last time I had it I bought it when I arrived at the market and then ordered and ate lunch. Flying Monkey's display cases keep the items very cold. I do not recommend eating their products when you buy them. Let them come up to temperature as I did with that cupcake. When I finally bit into it I was really impressed. It was delicious. Just the fight amount of sweetness and chocolate and vanilla flavors. I usually don't kvell for vanilla frosting but this frosting really did it for me. My hope is that Flying Monkey will expand its vegan offerings. They are off to a great start. read more
I really, really, really wanted to love Flying Monkey's cupcakes. I mean cupcakes make people happy and who doesn't love their logo? I had seen the store in the Reading Terminal a few years back and always wanted to go. A few months back there was a groupon where for $7.00 you can get 6 cupcakes. I bought it, giving me a reason why I had to go visit. The lady behind the counter was really friendly and let me know that my groupon was valid for any of the cupcakes with the exception of their really huge ones. She also let me know that most of their cupcakes were iced with butter cream, so like butter, keep the cupcakes at room temperature so they don't get hard. I was so excited when choosing the flavors, this was serious business! I decided on Lavender, Black Velvet,Tiramisu, Vanilla butter cream on Vanilla cake, Cookies and Cream and Chocolate butter cream on Chocolate cake. I brought them home where I cut each cake into 3rds since 3 of us were eating these and I wanted everyone to have a taste of each cake. The one thing that stood out to us it the butter taste of the icing. It was so much butter. Someone said that they felt that they were just eating a stick of butter and that wasn't good. Black Velvet - 2 of us liked this one the best. I really enjoyed the cream cheese icing. Cookies and Cream - my boyfriend liked this one the best. Tiramisu - it was chocolate cake with a coffee flavored icing and chocolate shavings. I felt that the coffee flavor was way too strong. The regular chocolate and vanilla just stood out because of the overbearing butter in the icing. Lavender- This was the one I was most excited about and sadly this is the one that got the lowest votes from all. It was hardcore butter meets really strong lavender flavor. I think I would only ever get the black velvet again, which makes me so sad because I had such high hopes. read more
Kitchen sink brownie... no, not a nasty soggy brownie. A creative masterpiece that I will attempt to make myself. Brownie topped with pretzels, potato chips, mini chocolate chips, jimmies, animal crackers and Oreo cookies. For some that might be topping overload, but for a fatty like me.... I die~! The strawberry iced vanilla cupcake was super moist and delicious. Although I don't understand their need to "take the chill off" by nuking it in the microwave for X-teen seconds. It made the icing too runny. The cake had a little crunch at the top, but then super fluffy in the middle. It even had a little sliver of brown and pink chocolate shaving on top. Cute and creative. There is a wide selection of other cupcakes and creative brownie flavors. I also like the fact that they are located in Reading Terminal Market. Always a good place for good eats. read more
THE WHOOPIE PIES GETS THIS PLACE 5 STARS AUTOMATICALLY. And yes.. I haven't tried anything else.. but I don't need to. Because. Well. The whoopie pies are amazing. The chipwich one is my favorite.. The right amount of everything. So tasty. The regular chocolate one with regular filling is second-- amazing. The guiness one is my third favorite-- amazing. Guiness lovers will probably love it. I'm not really into guiness. Fourth one I tried was the peanut butter one-- thought it was kind of weak on the PB taste, probably wouldn't get this one again. read more

What do I think of the place? Delicious. My girlfriend recommended this spot and claims that they have one of the best cupcakes she has ever tasted. Sadly I will have to come back and try one because being a peanut butter lover I opted for the m&m and peanut butter squares which were awesome. This piece of sweetness had a nice balance and wasn't packed with a fistful of sugar. It was one of the few times I actually ate a dessert and didn't hate myself. Definitely worth a try if you are in the area! read more

This place is amazingly good. I first visited a few years ago and needed a birthday cookie. Without a problem they wrote Happy Birthday on the cookie for me even though that isn't something they would normally do, at the time anyway. Today my boyfriend and I visited because we had a bet and if he won he wanted a brownie from Flying Monkey. Well he won, but they were all out of regular brownies so he got a classic whoopie pie, which I think he thoroughly enjoyed, and I got a peanut butter chocolate cupcake. The frosting was just right, now to sweet and just peanut buttery enough. The cake was moist but didn't fall apart all over the place. We also shared a bottle of Mexican coke which was a nice little treat on it's own. Why did I get a cupcake even though I lost the bet? My boyfriend is the sweetest and if you have someone in your life that is the sweetest this would be an awesome place to pick up something special for him or her! Maybe try the Strapple. We weren't feeling brave enough today but this is a massive piece of dessert which is described as, apple pie baked into vanilla cake and strawberry pie baked into chocolate cake. read more

Meh. Nice that they have vegan options! But small, expensive and nothing special. It was almost like a half cupcake! The frosting wasn't super sugary which was nice, but there was so much on top, I threw away most of the frosting. read more

Read reviews online saying that the whoopie pie here is a must try but I thought it was pretty average. A piece costed $3 and it was the size of an average whoopie pie. The one pictured tasted pretty much like an oreo made into a cake. Nothing special in my opinion. read more
The pumpple cake is the dessert for the indecisive. Can't decide between pie or cake? Chocolate or Vanilla? No worries! This cake combines multiple flavors with a layer of chocolate cake with pumpkin pie embedded in it and a layer of vanilla cake with apple pie embedded within it, slathered with vanilla buttercream. Overall, an awesome concept. I think the main problems we had with it was that we ate it immediately within Reading Terminal. Flying Monkey Bakery sells their cake and cupcake items cold. This meant that the frosting was a thick layer that just cracked and broke away in thick sheets each time a fork was used. So I would definitely recommend bringing back a slice to eat at home when it as reached room temp. So the texture was bit off since we ate it at the terminal. I understand why these items are cold (keeps better and transports better), but I wished that they had fresh pieces for customers that wanted to dig into their sweet purchases immediately within the Reading Terminal. Their vanilla cake definitely has great flavor and was our favorite out of all of the pieces of this cake slice. Friendly service. read more

O.M.G!! Mouth watering and flavorful black raspberry whoopies!! It melted in my mouth. The crust was soft. The flavor of black raspberry was out of the world! Wish I had got more whoopies from the store. Definitely worth the stop if you are at Philly's Reading Terminal market. Even though the market itself was crowded, the store has a fast moving crowd. So worth the stop even if you are short on time! read more

This place has really good desserts and the employees are always nice. This time I got the chocolate whoopie pie with raspberry cream and it was delicious. I've gotten the regular chocolate Whoopie pie and red velvet previously, the red velvet is more dry in my opinion. I also got a Boston cream cupcake this time and the guy said there were only two left so he gave me both for the price of one which was really cool of him. Overall would definitely recommend the desserts here. read more

I am always at the Reading Terminal and today I decided to try the Creme Brulee cupcake at #flyingmonkeyphilly. Well it did not disappoint! The frosting was not whip cream nor was it butter cream; but it was light, flavorful, had a delicious aroma of creme brulee and was deliciously smooth. The cupcake itself was light, not too sweet just perfect. I recommend you stop by and try a few of their treats. read more

We visited this place while on vacation in May of 2016 and I fell head over hills in love with something called the "Whoopie Pie." It was probably the best thing that I have ever had. I want to travel back to Philly, just to visit this place again. Located in Reading Terminal Market, this shop is right in the center and there's a ton of dessert competition around the whole place. They also had a few other desserts such as pies, pumples, and cakes in addition to coffee and teas, but all you need to know is the whoopie pie, since that's what they're known for. read more
I would DEFINITELY revisit this bake shop. I ordered a lemon bar and the Fruity Pebbles rice crispy treat. As soon as I took a bite, I thought (and my husband said aloud) "Now, THIS is what a lemon bar should taste like!" The shortbread cookie was thick and dense, the lemon portion was sweet and tart without being over the top. The crispy treat was also really good. It had whole, unmelted, marshmallows mixed in and I think that helped to calm down the taste of the Fruity Pebbles. Well done, Flying Monkey! read more
Friendly workers, interesting flavors of cupcakes (lavender, tiramisu, etc.), various pastries (cupcakes, whoopie pies, cookies, brownies, etc.). We ordered one red velvet whoopie pie and a meyer lemon cupcake (both $2.50 each). The red velvet whoopie pie was good...a dense, moist pastry with fluffy cream cheese filling. The meyer lemon was so-so...lemon cupcake with lemon filling. The filling was a jam or jelly like consistency and tasted like something from a lemon pie. Not the best, but not the worst bakery I've been to. read more

Thanks to a mini fried dough orgy that included both Federal Donuts and Beiler's, we could not bear the thought of eating more sugar. And yet, the Whoopie Pies beckoned at this spot. Luckily, that's why G-d invented takeout boxes. So Hubby and I got a Guinness filled one to share later, and the kid got a Chocolate-Mint. Back home in Brooklyn, we promptly put our Whoopie Pies in the back of the fridge and forgot all about them for days. Several days. When we finally remembered, I was surprised by how moist the cake was after all that time. Brought to room temperature, I could taste the Guinness in the filling, but its flavor could have been more prominent. Goes without saying, the kid gave a thumbs up to his Chocolate-Mint. While we were at Flying Monkey, I spotted a Blood Orange Brownie that looked promising, but I resisted. Love that this place does some more "adult" bitter flavors like blood orange and Guinness. I will be back to try that brownie. read more

I feel like I need to try this place again. I liked the look of it and I was very intrigued by their items, such as a smores bar (swoon) and chocolate butter cake (remarkable). I was most attracted to the lavender cupcake so I just had to try one. Not impressed. Too much lavender flavoring and my frosting was straight butter. I let the cupcake sit out for atleast 15 mins and you would think the frosting would have come to room temp by then... Nope. It was like straight butter. I feel like this was the wrong choice of item for me but I wasn't blown away by the ale either. I will go back and try something different.... Perhaps that chocolate butter cake.... Swoooon.... read more

Ordered lavender cupcake and peanut butter whoopy pie. Each is $2.5, which I think is a little over priced given the quality of the food. The cupcake is very average cupcake, it doesn't have any lavender flavor, instead, it tasted just like sugar cupcake. The whoopy pie tasted good, moist and delicious, but for $2.5, you can definitely expect better whoopy pie. The service was ok, the lady let me standing at the counter for a little bit while she was busy cleaning the display window and getting ready to get out of work. read more

Quick stop and go for some dessert after dinner at Carmen's. I got the Elvis cake and it was pretty delicious in general, but i couldn't finish the slice because its quite heavy for my taste. But I guess it's sort of a good thing? Staff was super friendly so that's definitely a plus. I will absolutely return when I'm in Philly again. read more

Any bakery that carries any vegan baked goods gets 5 stars. Most vegan baked goods have a chocolate component that I cannot eat, even if it's vegan chocolate. So I was thrilled to find vegan whoopie pies and vegan lemon coconut mini bundt cakes. I think the whoopie pie is a poppy seed type cake. Anyway I bought 2 of each and they're not gonna make it through the night. Awesome!! Oh, one bad thing was that the dude handled money then boxed my baked goods. No gloves. A little skeevy, but I mentally went to my happy place. read more
