However, I was in town today, and thought I would see what this new Queen Village bakery was all about! The bakery, started by a couple, Zach and Paige Wernick, who had extensive baking experience, opened a few months ago. They were both there when I visited. I arrived at 10 on a Friday and they had sold out of several items I was hoping to try (Challah and Cardamom Bun). However, I made the best of the remaining pastries, and tried what was left. I started with the Chocolate Babka - as it has already made a 'reputation' for itself. (When I left the store, I went around the corner to Spread Bagels. The bagel baker's eyes lit up when he saw the babka! He knew it was from Rougarou and said "It's the best!"). I bought a whole babka as opposed to a slice. I'm very selective about my babkas. I like many different 'varieties' - the biggest difference I see among babkas is the layering of chocolate. Some babkas are a 'traditional' version with a moderate layering of chocolate - others, have several layers of chocolate making it denser. Rougarou has a thicker layering - which I believe is the more popular version. The inside had a nice texture, was beautifully marbled, very chocolaty, and I tasted cinnamon! I was surprised as I'd had many cinnamon babkas, but never a chocolate babka with cinnamon! It was braided into the moist loaf, and was an excellent addition. It was a delicious babka! I also got the Coffee Cake; it had been sometime since I had a slice of coffee cake at a bakery. This 'cake' was in the shape of a circle and powdered with sugar. It was a fluffy and tender, and with the crunchy top, was the perfect coffee cake! I could easily have eaten another one. Next up was the Ginger cookie. I have a fondness for these cookies as I love Ginger - especially with sushi! I took a bite into the chewy cookie and immediately tasted the sugar sparkling crust, and then the chewy interior, with just the right amount of spice! There's something special about the 'tang' of ginger in a cookie! Last, but definitely not the least, was the Butter croissant! It was one of the best croissants I've had. It was deeply golden and as flaky as can be on the outside. The inside was so light and airy - you could taste the richness of the butter. I tasted a 'saltiness' in the croissant thinking they may use 'salted butter'. I noted online the bakery uses sea salt in some of their pastries to balance the richness of the butter. It added a savory taste in a way....and while I think I prefer the pastry without the salt, I was intrigued. I was having eggs at the time, and cut the croissant in half and put the egg inside. It was epic! The light taste of the salt made for the best 'breakfast sandwich' I've had in a long time! I will definitely order again-it's unique! While reading about the bakery, there was a note to arrive as early as possible! I'll be sure to be there next time when it opens!! It's a real jewel in Queen Village!

Also, the rose pistachio shortbread tasted nothing like pistachio or rose - it was just regular shortbread sprinkled with some dried rose. One thing I truly appreciated was how easy it was to connect with the owner Saif and how responsive he was on his instagram page about any questions I had about specific products and the pick up location. They seem to be a highly customer centric business - no wonder they are so popular. I plan to visit their future pop ups at the Headhouse market and would love to try their savory items next!

My eyes were immediately drawn to, what appeared to be a 'Hostess Cupcake'....a chocolate cupcake with squiggly white frosting on top! I asked if there was a cream filled center, and there was! I ordered it. It brought back memories of the 'original' cupcake, but this was far superior than the Hostess cake! This cupcake was soft and velvety, with a chocolate richness that was wonderfully complemented with a deep, dark chocolate icing. I took a big bite to make sure I got some of the creamy center! Next up, the Sticky Bun. I love sticky buns and this one was a big reason why. It was covered with a sumptuous layer of walnuts and raisins. The buttery pastry had a delicious layering of brown sugar, nuts and raisins that enveloped and was folded into the bun. It was an exceptional sticky bun! We wanted to try a few doughnuts and asked for recommendations - we were told the Chocolate-Chocolate, Lemon Poppy and Red Velvet (with Cream Cheese frosting) were popular. We ordered all three! I would like to mention, Tiffany's is unique in that they cook the doughnuts in a steam oven instead of frying them! The steaming retains the moisture - resulting in a soft, fluffy texture and a truer flavor that's not influenced by frying in oil. The bakery is a second generation bakery having opened in 1977. The steamed doughnut is a new addition that revolutionized the bakery about 4-5 years ago. It's called the DoYo. Back to the doughnuts! Let's start with my partner's favorite - the Chocolate-Chocolate. We both agreed the steaming of these doughnuts makes a big difference. It was so light and moist - with a chocolate frosting that was a little firmer than the frosting on the cupcake. The Red Velvet DoYo with cream cheese frosting was heavenly - the soft texture reinforced the difference between the steam and oil bake - these cake DoYos were unique. The last DoYo was the Lemon Poppy. The icing and lemon flavor were luxurious! It was a nice finish to a variety of different doughnuts. The Oatmeal Raisin cookie was classic - soft and chewy, with an old fashioned oatmeal taste and texture. It was a good cookie. I saw the salted chocolate pretzels - at first I hesitated, as it's not really a pastry, but figured I'd try one. I'm glad I did! It wasn't your 'average' pretzel - the chocolate coating was as delicious as the icing on the doughnuts and the salt was a great addition. We really were surprised to find such a great bakery at the art show in Manayunk. It's a jewel that you must try out...especially the DoYos!!!
