I got a brownie for 4 dollars and it was very rich and flavourful. It was also very fudgey and thick which was very nice and it was also cold. I want to try their other stuff next! The line wasnt long at all and theres seating near this stall.
Reading Terminal Market has so many gems hidden within its walls. Flying Monkey Bakery is one of them. I got a variety of goodies to bring home after a few days of meetings downtown. We tried the cupcakes, Elvis cake, s'mores bars, and whoopie pies. The whoopie pies were good. Solid cake flavor and good texture, but could have used more filling for sure. The Elvis cake was a delightful surprise. The cake texture is a little closer to a poundcake, is banana flavored, and stuffed with chocolate chips. Add peanut butter buttercream and you're in for a real treat. The cupcakes were solid too. The real surprise of the bunch was the s'mores bar. It has a beautiful graham cracker crust with the perfect amount of sweetness. The marshmallow is incorporated in a way that is creamy instead of sticky. I would absolutely get these again and again. The staff was a little slow, but it looked like they were trying to pull some things out of the oven which may have accounted for the delay.,
Flying Monkey is a staple here in the city of brotherly love. Located inside RTM. You can't miss them. They have the huge awning with their name. I came to get their iconic whoopie pies. It's small compared to other places but it's good. Like really good. Chocolate whoopee wasn't overly sweet, the filling was a perfect blend of sweet cream cheese icing which sealed the deal for me. They have freshly baked cookies. My favorite is snickerdoodle. They are also famous for their pound cake. The price is kinda steep $16. Service is great here . I forgot who helped me but he took the time to help me, narrow down my choices. I wish they made regular rice crispy treats. If they add this, I'm sure it will sell fast. I cant eat too much food with food dye cuz it makes my tummy hurt :( Please make rice crispy treats without the dyes.. or better yet add peanut butter! Im definitely coming back!
Apparently this bakery has the best Whoopie pies. Decided to try out the classic. Not really the biggest fan of whoopie pies to begin with so not sure how much I can critique but I found the cake part to be a bit doughie. Not sure if that's how it's supposed to be, but I wasn't mind blown. The bakery had many goods though and looked good.
tl;dr the artisanal whoopie pies at this RTM bakery are small and mostly ordinary -- at least they only set you back a few bucks Flying Monkey Bakery is a famous Reading Terminal Market bakery promising small-batch desserts made with fresh ingredients. Flying Monkey was opened in 2010, and, while they serve many baked goods, the shop is best known for the whoopie pie lineup. Philadelphia Magazine has recognized the dessert as the city's most popular snack, and the Classic Whoopie Pie was even the most recent champion of RTM's "Market Madness" bracket. The bakery itself is in the bustling center of the Market, at the side of the main seating area. The shop is lined with a scalloped white awning pressed with Flying Monkey's silhouette logo. The trim, top-lit bakery display, moderately filled with classic and seasonal treats, is flanked by stainless steel counters and purple tile on either side. The stall is filled with shelves of ingredients and cooling racks of baked goods. During a recent visit to RTM, my mom and I were looking for a light dessert, and Flying Monkey's whoopie pie fit the bill. While we briefly considered the award-winning Classic, the Espresso Whoopie Pie was calling our name. Despite the general hustle and bustle of the Market, Flying Monkey had no line, so we quickly secured our treat. Immediately, we were impressed by the moist, light cake, leaning more toward a cupcake than a brownie. However, we were upset that the hefty buns overwhelmed the stingy schmear of vaguely espresso-ish filling. At $3.50 each, the whoopie pies are relatively affordable compared to many RTM vendors -- but, between the small portion and so-so execution, the satisfaction factor is sorely lacking. For larger, more traditional, and way cheaper whoopie pies, opt for Beiler's bakery at the northwest corner of the Market.
Butter cake is FANTASTIC here! I visited here while playing tourist with my tourist family members. This was my first time having butter cake. My family raves about butter cake and how good it is. So, I had to try it. It was the first time trying it so why not at a place inside the Reading Terminal Market! The whoopie pies, are no whoopie pies out of Maine, but they were still good. Customer service was great. They were helpful, and quick. I did read some of the other reviews and I am sorry those individuals low stars hurt Flying Monkey over something that could have been handled elsewhere and/or a little education about their products would have given a better understanding.
This bakery is inside of Reading Terminal Market. They have all sort of cool stuff including speciality stuff such as gluten free items So many tasty treats. We had brownie and cookies This is the friendliest bakery ever!! My son ordered a few items and the staff was so kind to him. I'll definitely be back.
Every October I eat something with pumpkin in it every single day. This spot was a great find and had a ton of pumpkin foods to choose from. Our interaction with the person at the register was great. I feel like a lot of reviews are about that, so I am getting that out of the way. Food wise I am leaning towards a 3, but I will give a 4 since I didn't try all their year round offerings. Doesn't seem fair. But lessgoooo: The Pumple Cake was a mistake lol It sounded like this epic delicious crazy thing and it was a total let down. Great idea, but I don't think the execution is really possible. The pumpkin whoopie pie was fine though. There are a ton of other things to choose from, so I'd find it hard to believe you can't find something!
we were at reading terminal market for "afternoon tea" i'll call it...since it was january, it was BRRR cold outside so we took some reprieve inside reading terminal market. i really wanted something sweet, but more importantly, something special to philly, so after perusing many dessert vendors and browsing/comparing menus, i chose this bakery b/c i wanted to try the butter cake, something we don't have in california, and what i'm told, is special to pennsylvania! the gentleman who assisted me was super friendly, answering this west coast gal's questions and making recommendations. i got a slice of the butter cake ($4.50) and a red velvet whoopie pie ($3.50) while hubby grabbed a table for 2 in the general seating area. reading terminal market is all about communal seating areas after you purchase your food. the butter cake was heavenly, so rich and buttery and the crust was crispy-chewy, and slightly salty which complemented the sweetness and richness of the cake. while red velvet is more of a southern style dessert, the red velvet whoopie pie is most definitely a pennsylvania treat. pennsylvania is known for their whoopie pies, again, something i can't easily find in california. i loved the taste of cream cheese buttercream in between two soft red velvet cookies...YUMMMM! i wish i had more stomach space to eat more, b/c i honestly would have bought more pastries to try...alas we already ate so much during the day, and still had dinner yet to come! highly, highly recommend coming to this bakery if you are at reading terminal market!
Year ago I first stopped by Flying Monkey to try the pumple cake. A mix of cake and pie. It was so disappointing that I hadn't been back in years. I don't think they even sell it anymore. On national chocolate cupcake day I decided to give it another try and bought two chocolate cupcakes. The cupcakes were dry and the icing hard and inedible. The worst cupcakes I've ever eaten. I'll stick with the Amish bakeries in Reading Terminal from now on.
I called to place an order for my girlfriends cake which was delicious! It was more than enough, so much so that we gave the rest of it to the staff where we had it served. They also give you the cake cold so that it can stay out to room temperature so it helped with transportation and surprise planning. The cake was a custom cookies m cream based cake with vanilla inside. The bites were just so soft and light with each bite. The cake is very dangerous if you lack control or have a sweet tooth because that icing was perfectly nailed on the cookies and cream flavor.
Never had a bad experience here! Always one of our go-to spots for a sweet treat in reading terminal. We have a funny story from a few years back when I used to be vegan and got their vegan cupcake, only for my mom to tell me halfway through that she mistakenly switched our cupcakes and I was eating the non-vegan oneneedless to say, I enjoyed the vegan cupcake more than the regular so I've been getting their vegan one ever since! It's truly divine. Love that they have GF options as well, my dad really enjoyed the GF peanut butter cookie! read more

Whoopie pies!! Enough said. lol. Cute little bakery in the middle of food hall. Delicious, fresh. Great variety. Did I mention they had Whoopie pies??!! read more
Flying monkey was decent. We tried the classic and red velvet whoopie. It was fun to try something new but it's not something I would need to try again. They were a little dry in parts with not enough filling on the edges. Just wasn't blown away by any means. The guy working the counter was friendly and had $2 waters which was cheaper than most other places I saw. Not something that I'm dying to get back to but would eat one if it showed up in front of me. read more

Saw the Butter Cake Bread on the Food Network so decided to give Flying Monkey a try. They had a good variety of bars so picked up a few. Have to say the the butter cake was rich, dense and decadent. That said, the Chocolate Butter Cake was the one that goes over the top. Amazing! You can't go wrong with any of the Bars but the Smore's and Triple Chocolate were our favorites. The Mini flourless Chocolate cake is a must! Servers were friendly. A food Network favorite that lives up to the hype! read more

I don't know who needs to read this (me), but you don't need a whoopie pie today. Ha, don't worry ... I didn't fall for that BS either ... and headed straight to Flying Monkey Bakery (in the bustling Reading Market) cause I "needed" a whoopie pie while attending a conference in downtown Philadelphia. That's right! Whoopie pies my pretties ... whoopie pies! Don't over do it. Get just one ... ... of each :) ... unless you "want" two of the chocolate (classic) and red velvet. Ok, I'm gettin' two of those AND one of the others. Also, don't fear Flying Monkey's whoopie pies featuring a pair of soft round mounds of fresh cake sandwiching a sweet dollop of creamy frosting. At $3-$4 a piece, the price is right. Let the joyous news be spread! read more

It was my friend's birthday and she really wanted a lemon cake (which was actually a little difficult to find in center city without having to custom order!) Decided to order from Flying Monkey since I happened to see they had "Luscious Lemon" on their menu. When I first opened the box, I thought "perfect, no spelling errors!" Then I thought to myself, "this is very plainly designed." I thought that the presentation would be a little better. They just put some yellow sprinkles around the cake. They informed me to put the cake out sitting at room temperature before serving. The cake was sitting out for about 2.5-3 hours, that should be enough time right? Cake was cut and the buttercream surrounding the cake was thicker than I expected. You can see in my photos what I mean. Lemon curd filling was actually good! I just didn't like the taste of the buttercream.. wasn't smooth/creamy. I honestly could've made better buttercream myself. The cake was a little on the dry side. My friend thanked me for the cake and said she liked it. So that's all that matters I guess! Honestly, the service was great! A+ ! The lady who took my order was quite pleasant and helpful. Made the ordering process easy with customized message. The lady who was there when I picked up the cake offered forks, knives, and napkins. Greatly appreciated!! I just wished I was more satisfied with the presentation and taste of their buttercream. =[ Ugh. read more

One of thee best cakes I've tried. I love their carrot and ginger snap cake with cream cheese icing. The cake is moist and so much flavor. The cream cheese icing is in between the layers of cake and iced with a buttercream icing. This cake flavor is seasonal. I finally tried a whoopie pie-cold like they suggested and I wasn't a fan. It tasted very dry. read more

We were able to pick up a few baked goods from Flying Monkey before leaving the market and they had a variety of sweet treats to choose from. The one that caught my attention was the rainbow rice krispy treats which had actual marshmallows in the treats which was very interesting! My friend also got the macaroon, whoopie pie and lemon tart and we knew we had a good feeling about it as the cashier said allcof those were here favorite treats. The cashier was extremely friendly and I was excited for the baked goods -- I am in no way a huge fan of baked goods but my friend was and so it was a treat for me to be able to try some of these as I would not have tried them if it was just me! Overall -- the baked goods were really tasty. Some were a little too sweet but I mean that's the whole point of sweet baked goods right? They have a wide variety of selections and it's always good to support local so I was glad I was able to check this place out! read more

3.5/5 Very decent dessert offerings at Reading Terminal Market. Heard that the Whoopie Pies are the way to go, and I was very excited to try them as I've never had them before. Tried the Original Whoopie Pie as well as the Red Velvet, and they both were very good (and very sweet). I felt like it was missing more of a balance in flavors because it was a little too sweet for me, but maybe that's just how Whoopie Pies are. I'm definitely glad I tried the award winning Whoopie Pies but I enjoyed my desserts at Beiler's and Bassetts more. read more

This Bakery in the Reading Terminal Market is a nice stop for a quick treat or for a full fledged dessert to take home. This is the place that has the Pumpple Cake which is a Pie Baked inside a cake. Genius! I didn't try it as even a slice would have been too much, having just eaten at another place. We try a Vegan Pumpkin Chocolate Chip cookie and a non-vegan Whoopie Pie. These were small and a nice treat while perusing the market. read more
I called asking if they have a key lime pie because I needed one for an event last weekend. The person who picked up was so warm and friendly. She said they didn't have it but she could make one for me. I got one made for a Saturday pick up. It was so simple and seamless. Customer service- Amazing! Secondly- the pie itself was really well made and looked really delicious. It was just the right amount of sweetness and tartness. The crust was just right and had a unique coconut flavor to it which I didn't expect. All in all it was great! read more

Thank you for ordering ahead of time! Glad we were able to provide…
Atmosphere: Flying Monkey Bakery is in Reading Terminal Market and greets your senses with many colors, fresh smells, and a great selection of cakes, pies, cookies, and more! Service: The attendant was helpful and we had no problems with ordering. Food: We bought the Fruity Marshmallow Treat. Though the treat looked enticing, we were a bit disappointed with the quality of it. Ours was stale and tough to bite into, making it hard to enjoy. Additionally, the sweetness and fruitiness tasted rather artificial/cheap and not exactly worth the $3. Overall: Flying Monkey Bakery was very alluring and had a nice array of selections. However, our experience with the Fruity Marshmallow Treat was underwhelming. Perhaps ordering other baked goods would have resulted in a better experience for us, but we wouldn't recommend the Fruity Marshmallow Treat. read more
Excellent cookies! I tried the double chocolate (chocolate cookie, chocolate chips and M&Ms) and the molasses/ginger cookies. Both were moist and absolutely delicious. Although everything in the display case looked amazing, in my opinion there's nothing quite like a fresh baked cookie, and Flying Monkey makes some great cookies. read more

I Got two pies for a graduation party and everyone raved about them. We had the apple crumb pie and the S'mores pie. Both were great but the S'mores pie was somethin else. The marshmallow top, the chocolate the crust, and the cinnamon dusted in there . Two pies was enough for about 16. Definitely will remember this place. read more

Somewhat torn with my review, because one of the first stores that caught my eye was was Flying Monkey Bakery. How could this treat of a place not catch your eye? Bright toppings on scrumptious looking desserts...we passed this place to get food, but doubled back to have a treat later. For our visit we got the following: Chocolate chip Walnut Cookie Red velvet Whoopie pie Chocolate Whoopie pie I started with the Chocolate chip walnut cookie, and guys this thing was amazing. Moist, fresh walnuts, nice chunks of chocolate and every bite elicited a smile. If my time with Flying Monkey bakery ended here, it would easily be 5 stars. The whoopie pies that we tried were both on the dry side. Much more firm than how they look, and while the flavors of the red velvet were pretty good, that's about as much as I can give to the pies. Customer service was nice and friendly and in terms of seats, there are none at the bakery. But that's okay, because these guys are located in Reading Terminal, and there's plenty of seats around if you look for it. We only tried Flying Monkey Bakery once, and i'd certainly be up for giving them another shot if and when i'm back in Philly. For now though, three stars is really all I can give, but that's my opinion. Go check it out though, and try the Chocolate chip walnut cookie!! read more
