We ordered the Flying Boat Family Dinner for 2 which comes with ample; fried rice, Mongolian beef (we had it substituted for chicken), orange chicken, won-ton soup, assorted appetizers, and we added a side of chicken chow mien. The food was delicious and freshly prepared to order. The lady was polite and efficient who provided me the food. I would suggest not judging this book by its cover, the place is kind of run down but the food was still very good and so much... we had enough for dinner, and lunch the following day. read more

Normally Corning is just some place I blast by traveling on the 5 but I was curious what was here. It's just south of Red Bluff. I was traveling from Sac and asked my GPS what restaurants were ahead. One of the choices was this Flying Boat Restaurant. GPS said it was a Chinese restaurant, though not a Chineasy name for a restaurant. What the heck, I told the GPS to go there. We got to the place and it's a little scary from the outside, a stand alone building that might not have very good food. We're here , so we go in. Seated at a decent table. It's not really THAT bad inside ... been in worse Mexican restaurant where I thought I really WAS in Mexico! We ordered a couple of the lunch specials, I didn't see anything too exotic on the menu, nor would I expect that here in this little town in the middle of nowhere off the freeway. We got broccoli beef and general chicken lunches. OK, the food was better than I was expecting, decent versions of each. I'd come back here again. I asked what was in the Vegetable Deluxe, assuming, of course I'd get a breakdown of the specific vegetables. The lady, whom I assumed was a manager or owner, seriously replied "mixed vegetables", then just stared at my. I was so taken aback by the lack of effort to describe the dish, hence having no desire for customers to try it, so I shook my head no and said "Nope. Nothing appealing about that, so I will get the tofu and vegetables", since I like tofu, and hate the majority of what would be in a mixed veggie dish, and their non-meat options were almost obsolete. That's it, that's all I asked for, and then come to get it 25 min later, and don't even think to.make sure it's whatbi ordered before getting back home, 30 min later, and find there's no tofu, which means she gave me the dish I specifically said I did not want. Tried the plain white rice that came with it, just to get something in my system, as this was the first food I had all day, and it was dry and either 7ndersooked or sitting out for so many hours, it was inedible. The was by far the worst Chinese food I have ever had. We ordered take out. The hot and sour soup was sweet and tasteless. The egg foo yung were hockey pucks and they went right into the garbage can. The squid in the seafood combo were rubber and chewy. The general chicken was over battered and too sweet and not at all spicy. I was so disappointed not on;y for the terrible food but for the $72. We were visiting family in Corning and ordered take out at this restaurant. We were excited to try after our family recommended the food but were disappointed enough with the service that we will not be returning. They said it would be 20-25 minutes for our order. We had to wait AN HOUR for our three plates of take out. We went to the counter to ask about our order and the cashier ignored us, gave us no explanation, and simply rushed to kitchen in which she hid until she had our order. However, They currently are the only Chinese restaurant in Corning now, as the long time ( Corning Chinese Restaurant just recently closed and has been replaced with ( Johnny Boys ) The Famous ( Corning Chinese Restaurants ) that was here as long as so many of your villagers have been here served some of the most authentic Chinese food around. It was family owned, and very much liked in the town of Corning. The restaurant was always filled up for lunch time and the dinner hour. Now back to my review.. When I use to go to the ( Flying Boat restaurant many, many years ago on the weekends for special nights out, I was always treated very well. The food that I ordered was always very good. The owner and cook, would always make me a very pretty flower from one of the vegetables that was placed so delicately in the center of my meal. Over time this restaurant the ( Flying Boat ) became extremely slow, from their poor service and lack of quality in their dishes. This only making the people of Corning, return to what was once their favorite Chinese restaurant, and only Chinese restaurant in Corning for over 25 years. The people of Corning were all just trying something new, but never forgetting their very much loved ( Corning Chinese Restaurant ) Customers will always return to what they know as being good and great customer service. Their loyalty was with the ( Corning Chinese Restaurant ), where they once went and loved. They hadn't given up on their favorite place as they had been going there all along, but had been giving the ( Flying Boat ) a chance too. In our very hot summer months here in Corning, CA the ( Flying Boat ) restaurant owners won't run any air conditioning, making their customers very uncomfortable. When I would try to enjoy a meal over my working ( lunch hour ) with a co-worker, it was impossible with the heat. We have summer temperatures of 99, 107, 114, anywhere in that range. They just wouldn't do anything to change this for their customers. I decided I wouldn't continue to be a customer of theirs and many other local people of Corning did just the same. If you drive by there today, all throughout the day, the ( Flying Boat ) doesn't ever have a car out front or along side the street, from a paying customer there. This should raise great concerns as well for the public as their food isn't getting used on a timely matter. Therefore putting customers at risk of food poisoning if the food has been in their care for too long and then served to the public. There's nothing worse than bad broccoli on a dish at a Chinese restaurant, I know because I have been served it before and it was also at this restaurant here. I'm sorry to have to make such a terrible review, when at one time they did have their shinning moment. Hey guys, we need a good Chinese Restaurant in Corning, CA. Must try this place out if you already haven't! Most amazing Chinese food you can get around! We ordered 2 orange chicken combinations one spicy one not spicy, perfect amount of spicy. The chow mien had amazing flavor and as well as the rice. As well ordered the egg rolls. Price for everything was great for how much you got! Huge huge portions for the price compared to most places now. Only problem we had was not getting enough water from the server. As a local, this is my favorite place to order Chinese takeout food. My favorite thing to order is the spicy orange chicken combo plate for either dinner or lunch. It comes with soup, fried rice and chow mein for under $11! You definitely can't beat that. If you eat at the restaurant, you get bigger portions compared to the plate that you get to if you takeout. Either way, my family and I love this place a lot. The only thing about this place that might sound unappealing is that the bathroom is outside (not the best looking either). The environment inside the restaurant is a little awkward too... definitely recommend taking it to go if you don't want to deal with all of that. The food is AMAZING. read more

The food is kind of hit and miss, my favorite is the sweet and sour pork and the pork fried rice. The fried prawns, crab puffs and chow mein that I preferred weren't very good. I'd definitely eat the rice and pork again, but everything else was definitely not worth the money. The person working was rude over the phone when we called, but maybe it was just an off day. I had an I incredibly delicious meal here last night. I have been going there for about 8 .years on and off. Sometimes the food was great and sometimes like leftovers. The service was the same. HOWEVER changes have been implemented. Emily a server, is a delight, soup within a minute, knowledge of the food and impeccable service with a smile. I was impressed. My dinner meal of broccoli/beef and orange chicken with chicken chow Mein was The Best I've ever had. All was cooked to perfection and they increased the beef amount , so not just Broccoli, as well as the chicken in their chow mein with perfect sauce. From this meal they have upped their food 100 %. If this continuous Flying Boat will be a TOP Chinese restarauant. Two weeks later I returned sure I was in for a treat. I ordered dinner with two entries. Sweet and sour pork and orange chicken with only chow Mein. Service was terrible by owner as I waited forever just for soup. Dinner arrived diminissed in size and quality. The chow Mein was so lacking between overcooked and little chicken, 180 from before. I ended up getting sick on the pork and my friend ate Two pieces the next day and felt bad. The worst of this problem is when I just wanted to tell owner of this misfortune the next to following day and they were suddenly closed on Monday. Then my next town trip on a Thursday they were also closed with no explanation. Finally today I connected and just wanted to return remains. I was interrogated crazily ( customer of 8 years) and I never once heard how can I fix this? I was asked if I went to doctor to affirm I was sick! Sure, puck and then go spend $ to acknowledge I was sick on food? Really?? Wasn't asking for anything back maybe just I'm sorry I'll do better. BEWARE. I randomly stopped by this restaurant on a road trip...and the food is good! I got the Kung Pao Shrimp lunch plate. Very well spiced and nice portions. I don't eat meat, so I was kindly warned that their chow mein had chicken. Good overall value for the food.
