*this review is about cupcakes only, but i have a few notes at the bottom about their cake tastings.
It's tough to rate this place because their icing is SO good, but the cupcakes themselves are sort of terrible. They're dry, crumbly, lacking flavor, and just generally not enjoyable to eat. It's hard for me to drive here when I have Crumbs and Red Velvet Cupcakery right in Clarendon.
I tried: the Oreos cupcake, the candy cupcake, the PB and chocolate cupcake, and the Samoa cupcake. Like I said, icing/toppings on all of them was delicious, as was the filling in those that had fillings. But the batter itself was not moist enough, and only tasted faintly of chocolate. It was the dryness that killed them, though - they were just too dense to enjoy.
Other little "housekeeping" things that annoyed me about this place: $0.50 for a box? Seriously? I just paid you $3 for a cupcake. I know they have bags for free but I picked these up to bring home as a treat for my husband and the boxes are way cuter. The 50 cent charge is just lame.
Their menu, on the day that I went in, did not accurately display which cupcakes were normal, and which were premium (a 50 cent difference). Again, I guess it's not the end of the world with this, but I thought I had only ordered 2 premium cupcakes (per their board), but it turns out all 6 of my cupcakes were premium. I have no problem paying more for a premium cupcake, but just list them accurately.
I did see someone doing a cake testing in their other room. I will say, their tasting sizes were very generous (like mini bread loafs), and they looked delicious. It looked like they had the plain cakes unfrosted, and then tons of frosting choices, not already combined - enough of both for you to really mix and match flavors. Very different from my cake tasting experience ages ago for my wedding (somewhere in MD, can't remember the name). They only had like 3 flavors of cake/icing, already pre-combined, and in tiny portions such that my husband and I really only got about a bite each. So, for wedding planning, this place looks like it works really hard to make cake tasting easy and fun. It definitely gets props for its customer service in this aspect - they clearly want to make it easy for you to taste and pick a cake. If they could fix the dryness in their chocolate cake batter (all of the cupcakes I had except the Samoa came with chocolate cake, and I didn't taste the Samoa), I'd give them a much higher rating. My husband did say the Samoa was "pretty good," but he thinks Hostess cupcakes are the best on the market. read more
