I went here to dance. I had an incredible night. Great atmosphere. Although I didn't know anybody, I danced all night with amazing salseros, not the usual show off crowd, just people having a good time. I've never been a fan of communism... Cuba, or Fidel. But ever since I started dating a Cuban, I've been to Floridas a time or two. It's a nice little mom and pop shop with the basics. Good food, good prices, and good service. Nothing here is top notch. But they deliver great value. I'm not an expert in Cuban food so I can't compare Versaille and Florida. But I can tell you that I have been consistently pleased with the food at Floridas. I do wish they would update their decor. But I've heard that Cuban restaurants are always a bit older since they're commies. read more

The place is a bit digeny, the menu is confusing, and the waitress are hard to understand. That aside, not thrilled about the food. Its ok. They use a lot of salt, which means they lack in seasoning. I guess, I'm not that impressed. I got some interesting looking stuff with my fried plantains. I passed on that after dissecting the plantains. I had the pollo asado, it way pretty good. The city of Downey has many Cuban restaurants. So, we finally gave this one a try. I won't call the service bad, just inattentive and we were sitting right in front of the kitchen, so it wasn't like they didn't see me looking over in my attempt to get some attention. The food took about 20 minutes to get to our table and if we would have been given a refill of the miniature bread basket, it would-of been fine, but we weren't, so 20 mins was alot on this paticular trip. The food was good. I had the bistec empanizado and my husband had some lechon with onions and sauce( he said it was delicious). The moros y christianos were not the best I've had at a Cuban place (Tropicana has the best), but I liked. They didn't have enough pieces of sizzly pork in them. i would try them again, but order take-out. read more

It's pretty good. I would go if I am near by, but i wouldn't make a trek out to downey If i wasn't in the area. Another Saturday, another long bike ride, another quest for POLLO to quell my hongry. I realized today that my impression of a place is directly related to the place I went to last. For instance I went to Tropicalata after going to Versaille the same day...so their shitty food seemed even worse. I went to Pollo Imperial last week, and I really liked that place, and this place didn't quite compare (for me) so 3 stars. Pollo Imperial felt very personal, and the food was good...it was a homey feeling place, the food here wasn't quite as good, and I felt the service was a little clinical and impersonal. Enough of the jibber jabber. A 1/2 chicken with a coke was $9.32...very reasonable price. The bread they serve is very good, the black beans EXCELLENT, the rice...good, but not as good as the beans. The 1/2 chicken was MONGO Huge. It was pretty good, some sections were a little more flavorful, some sections a littley dry, but overall very good..that chicken had hella breast meat. The plantains are real ass plantains...I think it might be the first place I've been to with "real' plantians. They were slighly burned to perfection...BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL char crisp goodness on the outside. The only problem is that being a real plantain, it is really fat and thick, so the chewy goodness doesn't extend to the middle like at the places that use bananas. The place was really busy with people picking up catering orders non stop..this might have something to do with my thinking the service could have been a little better...it wasn't bad, but something was a little off. Reading my review over, I think I might be being a little harsh, and they really deserve 4 stars...but there was something a little bit special about the treatment of the waitstaff at Pollo Imperial that makes this place seem like they could have been a little better..not to mention that the the chicken at Pollo Imperial was better...either that or I am just turning into a cantankerous old fart. read more

It's a simple Cuban restaurant with great food. I've come here several times in the past for lunch and their food has always been consistent. I usually get the Baked Chicken, which is delicious, lots of food and extremely reasonably priced. Their service used to be mediocre, but lately seemed to have improved. read more

Florida's seems a little divy from the outside, but it is a hidden gem. I have been there for both lunch and dinner and the food never disappoints. The steak and chicken that I've had there have both been excellent. The side portions of black beans and rice are tasty and generous. Fried plantains are sooooo good here too! My favorite, however, has to be their mango smoothie; it is just too good! Service was adequate and the management staff was pleasant. They also have TVs in the restaurant, so you are entertained while waiting for your food to come. All in all I would say that for the money you can't expect more from a restaurant; the food is yummy, the drinks keep coming, and entertainment is available. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to try some tasty Cuban food. read more

My co-worker and I stumbled on this place by accident, and the only reason we stopped in was the name: FLORIDA! My co-worker and I recently moved to California from Florida, and this place was like heaven for us. We have been back to this place numerous times and thus far we have nothing to complain about. This restaurant has great Cuban food at a very affordable price. The portions are quite generous and the taste is very authentic. I didn't give it a full 5 stars because the service can improve. One star because the prices are reasonable, and a second star because the service was average, no stars for the food. The pork was stiff and tasted like it was reheated from the day before. The pargo fish was a large portion, but very bland. The arroz con moros was too salty, otherwise ok. The yuca had the right consistency but the mojo used was not very good (This can be said for the pork mojo too). Croquettes were over fried, otherwise the filling was acceptable. The beef empana was filled with seasoned finely ground beef, they were ok, but I would recommend they fill them with picadillo and season them the same way. I don't know how they can ever get 5 stars. I was born in Cuba, and have been eating Cuban food my entire life, so maybe these people are plants, or they really don't know how good real Cuban food can be. I seriously doubt that the cook is Cuban, or has been to Miami to taste good Cuban food. I can imagine it must be hard to find a good Cuban cook in Southern California, but other restaurants have found a way to fix the problem. I hate leaving bad reviews but I was really disappointed today. I've been here a couple times and every time we had great service. Decided to stop by for lunch and we had the worse experience!! This review is actually for the waitress we had. We usually get an older lady. She's sweet and on it. This time we sat to the left when you walk in towards the restroom so we had a different lady. Didn't get a chance to look at her name but if the manager is reading this they can figure it out. 1. We didn't get knowledge for about 15 minutes and had to waive her down. 2. We asked for water didn't get any until the 2nd time we asked and they only brought out one so we had to ask again making it 3 times. 3. They took a long time to bring out our food and brought out the wrong sandwich. 4. She asked if I wanted a box to go I said yes we would like 2. She brought us one. Had to ask again after that. 5. Took way too long with our check. 6. She tried to over charge. We were there for about 2 hours which should have been an easy quick lunch. I love the food, but today was a bad day. A really bad day... As a business manager and former server I'm extremely lenient and understandingof circumstances that may interfere with good service, however today was a disaster for Florida. Totally mortifying experience, I was so embarrassed. My honey and I came in for a casual dinner for our 4 month anniversary, I had boasted about the great Cuban food, and we finally got an opportunity to stop by. It all began when we got our drinks (2 cokes) only to get pulled off the table and get taken over to the table that got sat AFTER us. Cool, no worries, maybe it was a mistake. We didn't get any plates for the bread, I had to place mine on a napkin. We ordered ONE appetizer and ONE entrée, the couple in the booth that got sat AFTER us got their food BEFORE us. My boyfriend was getting a little irritated with the service we were getting, 45 minutes later we were still waiting on our food. When it finally came out, only the entrée came out. We waited a few more minutes, and the other one was still being made. We left. read more

Having surrounded myself with a number of friends whose parents are Cuban, I have learned to appreciate and identify an authentic Cuban meal when I am presented with one, and let me tell you, this place is the real deal. Florida Restaurant is unusually quaint, and by that I mean that the decor is by no means modern, but the place is cozy nonetheless. Red pleather upholstered booths and glass-top tables remind me of a childhood friend's kitchen, and the food reminds me of the dishes that his mother and grandmother used to prepare. Now, I have visited most of the Cuban restaurants and bakeries in Southeast Los Angeles, and this place, by far, serves some of the best Cuban food I've had. The Masas de Puerco (fried chunks of boneless pork) are better here than at any Cuban restaurant I've been to. The Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), Rabo Encendido (oxtail), Cuban Sandwiches, and Milanesa (breaded steak or chicken breast) are all delicious as well. All are served with the traditional white rice, black beans, and fried plantains. Wash it all down with a Jupiña! If you feel like an authentic Cuban meal, you must visit this place. You will NOT be disappointed. Plenty of parking too. read more
