We dined at Chimarrao for an early dinner on a Sunday evening. The service started out kind and…read moreattentive, and we ordered the rodizio (the all-you-can-eat meat deal). Naturally, as we were early, there were not many other patrons in the restaurant. So the service was quick, and we were brought a plethora of meats in a short time, as expected. Encouraged by the volume of meats we were receiving, we limited our trips to the buffet (so as to not use up valuable real estate). A few times we were missed on the meat rotation, however to remedy this grave error, we were each brought four generous slices of picanha (but no seconds.) As the meal continued, service started to slow down and the restaurant got progressively more crowded. We felt as though we were being encouraged to stop eating. However, we continued requesting more meats until we were rudely CUT OFF by the lead server, while other tables around us (who had been there as long) continued to receive their meats as promised. Meanwhile, we had to practically BEG for the grilled abacaxi (grilled pineapple with cinnamon, a critical way to end the meal). In all of our experience consuming meats (both at churasquerias and other establishments more broadly) we have never been cut off when promised an "all-you-can eat" deal. If the all-you-can-eat was limited to one hour, this should have been clearly specified, and perhaps we would have dined elsewhere.

I came to this Brazilian churasqueira with five Brazilians. These people know what a good Brazilian…read moreBBQ restaurant should be, but this was certainly not one. It's a huge restaurant but was pretty empty when we came at 5pm. I can imagine that it gets fairly busy at the height of the summer with all the tourists as it is in a prime location right next to the Oceanarium, the Science Museum and the cable car. Because of this, they probably don't need to rely on return custom and this would explain the shoddy service. For a anyone who doesn't know how a churasqueira works, you basically pay a set price for all-you-can-east meat brought to the table on a selection of skewers and carved on to you plate until you say stop! There are usually many different cuts of beef as well as some lamb, pork, and chicken dishes. The meat here was ok, but nothing exceptional. The buffet at most Brazilian restaurants is normally so amazing that it competes with the meet to fill your belly. Think sushi, cheeses, charcuterie, fish and lots of exciting salad dishes. At this restaurant, not only was 70% of the buffet space empty, what was there was totally pathetically - limp lettuce, and bowl of uncut and undressed cherry tomatoes, and a few unidentified fried objects that I really didn't want to touch. We also ordered the additional seafood sharing plate for two and when this turned up it looked pretty impressive. Unfortunately, the prawns were old and tough, the muscles looked like they had been hanging around too long, and the crab sticks (from the 1980's?!) were just unappetising. The only decent part was the seafood dip in the middle. One of our waiters was so lazy, he didn't change the plates or bring new cutlery when required and was slow with the drinks orders. On top of this, he was quite rude and unfriendly. The only saving grace for this place was our meat waiter who was not only super fast at bringing around the meat dishes, he was really friendly and entertaining, and actually made an enjoyable evening out of mediocre food. The house vino verde was also good and I did leave feeling pretty stuffed so not all was lost. If you are visiting this area of town, I would recommend avoiding this tourist trap and searching out something far more local and authentic.

It wasn't. I found Bufalo Grill to be much better. Bufalo Grill is located in Parque das Nacoes, and within a short walk of the Tryp Oriente Hotel. With several restaurants in Parque das Nacoes, I stumbled into it and was able to tell that it featured buffet style dining. The location is very nice, being modern and with a high ceiling and floor to ceiling windows that look out on the Rio Tejo and some of the Expo 98 buildings. Virtually every item I sampled, including all of the meat and poultry, was good. There was no doubt about that. Even a dessert ordered at the end of the meal was very good. The pricing scheme seemed simple. While the service was slightly less friendly than at Chimarrao, everything else, particularly the setting, was better at Bufalo Grill. A meal here called for a snooze afterwards. It was convenient to be a short walking distance away from the Tryp Oriente Hotel ... and a comfortable bed. What they didn't offer was a wheelbarrow ride back to the hotel!

No joke, the best meal we had in Lisbon!…read more A Nossa Casa was recommended to us by a local when we were at her jewelry store, and she did not lead us astray. When we walked in, the restaurant felt so warm and cozy, like we had just entered someone's home (fitting for the restaurant name). It must have been our lucky day, as they have one table they set aside for walk-ins by the front door, and it was free and ours! The table was different than the rest of the tables in the place. Imagine a living room set-up - the table was lower like a coffee table and the chairs were comfy arm chairs, and we sat next to the window filled with hanging plants and greenery. I would definitely recommend making a reservation, though - we watched countless people be turned away at the locked door since they were fully booked up. But we didn't feel rushed at all - the host/owner spent the time with us to go over the entire menu and his wine recommendations - I landed on a bottle of vinho verde that was bright and crisp. He and his Brazilian chef wife created a menu that is a fusion of their two cultures, and the food is outstanding. We had a razor clams dish that was so good, it was my first time having razor clams and I'm a huge fan of them now. I cannot wait to go back if I'm ever in Portugal again!
