While visiting the area we heard great reviews about this spot so decided to give it a try for dinner. Wow!! The food, drinks, and service did not disappoint! All drinks were a hit (purple rain, Spaulding, and peach henny drinkhit!! The humans ate first (before the camera) so the photos are a little slim. Great food and service! We came for brunch on Sunday (5/31/26), and overall, it was a really enjoyable experience. Grace (our server) and Ms. Sinclair (the general manager) were both very kind, upbeat, and welcoming. They always had smiles on their faces and gave excellent customer service throughout our visit. For an appetizer, I ordered the Bang Bang Shrimp, and it was really good! My only complaint is that I wish they offered a bigger portion because I definitely would not mind paying more for it, even as an appetizer. For my entrée, I got the Lamb Chop Sunrise, and everything was delicious! One thing to note: the collard greens are spicy, so make sure you have some water nearby while eating them. I do wish the lamb chops were a little bigger. The grits were thick and not runny at all, and the diced pineapples added a really nice touch of sweetness to the meal. I also ordered the applewood bacon, though I wish you got more than two slices for $4. My parents enjoyed their meals as well -- the Authentic Catfish & Southern Grits and the Sweet Heat Plate. My mom also ordered an extra side of blackened shrimp, but unfortunately, it was way too salty and had to be sent back. I'm not sure what happened there because the Bang Bang Shrimp was seasoned perfectly and not overly salty at all. Grace kindly removed it from our bill and handled the situation professionally. The inside of the restaurant is beautifully decorated and gives a true soul food vibe. I especially loved the portrait of Black Wall Street, and they even have a cute photo area for pictures. Ms. Sinclair was kind enough to take photos of my mom and me while I was taking pictures of her, which made the experience even more special. Saw Flavor Hills recently on Google maps and marked it to visit. Made an early reservation before a DPAC show. It's a great location to be able to walkfor dinner and then back to the show. I saw reviews talking about the Crab and Collard dip being a must have, so we got that and the Crispy Deviled Eggs. For dinner I went with the Authentic Catfish and Southern Grits, while hubs got the Ribeye. The crispy deviled eggs were on point with the hot honey. The Crab Collard greens dip was cheesy enough for me... which is an accomplishment. Put the dip on the unseasoned side so you get the flavors of the pita chip sessoning with the dip. The catfish had the best seasoning with lots of flavor, however the grits were cold and the fish was warm. Hubs said the Ribeye was a good cut and cooked perfectly. The mashed potatoes were the creamist ever, but cold. It was Graduation and Mothers Day weekend so there were several big parties which made the service a little slow. Even though the food wasn't piping hot and service was slow, giving them the benefit of the doubt and will come back for the Shrimp and Grits and we'll see how the next experience goes at which poimt I will update my review. read more

Been stalking their instagram page anxiously awaiting our first visit! Today was the perfect day to try this amazing place. Vibe: 10/10, Food 10/10, Service 10/10. Great experience at Flavor Hills! I was haning out at a food festival at Durham Central Park but the food truck lines were sooo long so my homegirl and I decided to take the five minute drive to Flavor Hills. She is a regular and spoke very highly over the food. She loved the catfish and the yams and the collards. I ordered the salmon with risotto and collard greens. It was very flavorful and well seasoned. We sat at the bar and had a couple drinks before our food came. I believe we ordered the I'm so pretty and it was very delicious. The bartender was very nice and gave us updates on the status of our food as well. Ambiance is lovely and lively. I would definitely go back again. read more

The food was delicious! I'm glad I tried it for myself. We shared the crab and collard dip but I also enjoyed the peach glaze chicken dish and sweet potato cornbread. The cornbread tasted more like cake, which I didn't mind. It's served warm and was very soft. The brussels and red skin mashed potatoes were amazing, crispy and creamy. My friend's rattlesnake pasta with salmon was good but it has a Cajun kick. I'd give that a 7/10 because I've had better Alfredo sauce. My mocktail was very tasty and probably the first thing gone. Having been to the Myrtle Beach location, I was excited to learn of one closer to home & quickly added this to my must-go list during my last visit to Durham. It was absolutely worth watching the reservation site for! Beautifully decorated with paintings by local artists. Warm, inviting service. The same Southern deliciousness that I experienced in Myrtle Beach...only easily 10 times better! I enjoyed my bourbon smash along with my hot honey/sweet heat chicken & waffle--would absolutely order both items again...many times, lol. But, the true star of the show was the sweet potato cornbread! I don't know what farm these potatoes came from, what chef prepared them, or how many delightful spices were included. Food was so good - I had the grilled peach bourbon chicken which was served on a bed of crispy brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes. I also got to taste a sweet potato tater tot which was also really good. Everyone else in our group also enjoyed their food. Artwork was also really amazing inside! Now for the reasons why this was only 3 stars... We had a reservation for 6 people, but they only had one table for 6 people that was already taken. They sat us at a 4 top with a 2 top next to it, but would not let us move the tables together. They were not nice about it either, nor did they explain why by this was an issue. The restaurant was not crowded, and pushing those tables together would not have impeded anyone's ability to walk by or serve food/drinks to us. I would recommend not allowing reservations for 6 if they cannot accommodate them. Next issue, we tried to order beers and almost every beer was sold out or not cold yet. Our group was excited to have the option to have beers from Proximity Brewing. But out of like 5 or 6 on the menu only 2 were available. Several of our group just opted not to have a drink at that point. I definitely felt bad for the server because he was losing out on some of our group not ordering alcohol. The other minor thing we were a little bummed about was subbing out a side. My husband didn't want fries that came with his sandwich so he ordered the rice pilaf instead. They only charged $2 extra - not a big deal (and the server was up front about the extra charge). But on the menu, a side of fries is more money than the rice pilaf. Maybe it's more about the extra work for the chef or different food to have on stock, but it seemed like that could be done differently. We walked in on a cold Tuesday evening. We were sat immediately with our choice of seating. There is plenty of seating and a big bar area. Lots of colorful art on the walls and food music playing. Our server Nez was attentive and provided good service. The menu had lots of food choices. I started with the simple salad. Simple it was. The bleu cheese dressing had no flavor. No taste of cheese at all. Next came the short rib meatballs. They were hearty with chunks of rib meat and a strong jerk flavor. The bang bang shrimp was average but tasty. I enjoyed the pita chips but the dip fell short. Oily and very minimal spinach in it. The catfish was nice and crispy when it arrived however I didn't expect the grits to be runny. We went on a Tuesday early evening for my wife's birthday. Server introduced herself and took our drink orders. Several minutes later she took our app order for the crab dip. Oddly enough the app shows up and still no drinks. Then someone from the bar area comes over and says they do not have the beer my wife ordered, so she went ahead and had what I was having -- a sangria. She ordered the shrimp and grits and I had the fried catfish sandwich with sweet potato tots (which came with a hint of cinnamon and what seemed like a maple butter to dip them in). We decided on peach cobber for dessert and it was massive. In my opinion the music was a little too loud for 5:30 p.m. Also, our server ran my credit card and brought us the receipt but no pen. I was excited to visit this restaurant. I look at the menu online. I thought they had some good offerings the day that we came. They had just changed their menu so some of the things that I was looking forward to trying they no longer had the service was. Biggest thing was the food quality was inconsistent. I visited for the first time at my daughter's request--she enjoys supporting Black-owned businesses. We were celebrating my mom's birthday, so I was really looking forward to trying something new. Unfortunately, the experience didn't quite meet expectations. Our waitress, Krystal, didn't seem very friendly and appeared overwhelmed or tired. When our Shirley Temples arrived with ice (despite us requesting no ice), her response to the mistake felt dismissive. We ordered fries with crab as an appetizer, but they came out cold, as if they had been sitting for a while. Most of our meals had the same issue--served cold. My mom's shrimp and grits were flavorful but not hot. My daughter's bang bang shrimp and my wings and mac and cheese were also cold. The only dish that came out at the right temperature was my son's chicken sandwich. Additionally, we ordered asparagus but were only informed about 15 minutes later--just before our food arrived--that they had run out, which was frustrating. Overall, the flavors were good (around an 8.5/10),but the service and food temperature issues bought the experience down (around 6 out 10) sadly due to this experience don't think we will be returning. read more

I'm sad to report that we had an unfortunate experience at Flavor Hills. We had a reservation at 6:30 but were asked to wait because the kitchen was backed up. I agreed to that because we weren't ravenous and were enjoying our conversation outside the restaurant. We were seated, and it took a little while for our server to come around. I asked about gluten-free options on the menu, and the server said she didn't think they had any. I mentioned that the online menu showed that the salads and the shrimp and grits were gluten-free. She said she would check with the kitchen. When she came back, she said that the grits were not gluten-free, but I could have any of the grilled options or a salad. I chose a grilled option with mashed potatoes, and she said she didn't think the potatoes were gluten-free. I explained that potatoes are naturally gluten-free. Again, she said she would need to check with the kitchen. She came back a while later with a manager. The manager said that the potatoes were fine, and I could order that option. We all told her what we wanted. She came back a while later and confirmed our order, saying that she forgot to submit it. It was then 7:30pm. I will fast-forward to say that our waitress did not come back until 8:30pm to fill our waters. I asked her about our food since we had been waiting an hour since she submitted our orders. She said she would check on the order but offered no apology. Thankfully, the food was delicious. My salmon was tender, my husband enjoyed his wings and crab fries, and our cousin enjoyed her shrimp and grits. I would expect that a server would be knowledgeable about the allergens in their food. I would also expect that we would have received an update when the food took longer than expected. Given the limited options of gluten-free options and the wait and lack of communication, we won't be returning. read more

My experience did not start off well here. We had a reservation for a party of 6 but were not able to be seated until 3 of us were there, which is fair but it was not busy. Once we were seated we were placed at a 4 top and a 2 top, we moved the tables together but were told we could not do that. In my opinion do not take reservations for larger parties if you are not able to sit them at one table. We started off with a round of drinks but only half ordered one since they were out of most of the beers. I was able to order their last cold can of the Hayti Haze from Proximity Brewing and really enjoyed it. My friend and I both ordered one and were jokingly told to duel it out for who got it. For food I ordered the cajun shrimp and grits and my husband ordered the salmon orleans. We also tried the sweet potato tater tots. The food and service were both really good and our table really enjoyed all of our meals. I might go back and try this place at another meal time, but this place should not even advertise itself as open for brunch - they only have a few brunch-y things on the menu but strangest of all - they don't have coffee, or tea, at all. I've been to Flavor Hills twice already, and honestly, the food is that good -- which makes this review especially frustrating to write. The one-star rating is entirely because of my second visit and the overall experience. I attempted to place a takeout order by phone, but the line was busy for 30 minutes straight. Since I live close by, I decided to drive over and order in person. When I arrived, I was told their phone was dead. I placed my order and was told it would be ready in 15-20 minutes. I walked around downtown and came back within that time frame, only to be told they hadn't started my order yet. At this point, the restaurant was around 70% full, with no one waiting to be seated. They then told me it would be another 15 minutes. I checked in multiple times and ultimately waited over an hour longer than the original estimate before my food was finally ready -- more than an hour total for what should've been a quick takeout order. The staff did apologize when they handed me my food, but after the long wait and multiple missteps, I was surprised there was no comp, discount, or acknowledgment beyond a verbal apology. I truly wanted to recommend this place to friends and family because the food is excellent. However, after this experience, I'd suggest giving them a few months to work out their operational issues before trying it. The potential is there -- but the execution needs serious improvement. read more

Had family visiting from out of town and found this spot on Yelp. They definitely lived up to their good reviews! We loved the paintings on the walls, gave this place a nice vibe. We had the bourbon peach chicken, sweet heat chicken, salmon Orleans, wings, smash burger. Tge food was excellent and they give large portions. Our server, i believe his name was Ty. I may not remember his name but his service left a lasting impression. Exceptional customer service, very knowledgeable about the food and gave some great recommendations. He also kept us abreast of the wait time for order. Came to the table several times to check on us and keep us informed. For dessert we ordered the peach cobbler and banana foster cake. The peach cobbler was good but the banana foster cake was subpar. The cake tasted like box cake and the frosting lacked flavor. After such a wonderful meal the dessert left me a little disappointed. Why a 4 and not a 5? The wait time; we waited well over 30 minutes for our order to come out. We didn't order appetizers so the wait felt exceptionally long. If this is the standard wait time then serve bread and butter. The table situation. We were a party of 7 and we weren't able to put the tables together. This made no sense to us when we go to restaurants and this is done all the time. The host explained that they couldn't do it but didn't explain why. I think I would've been able to mentally absorb it better with an explanation. For all we know it could be a code issue. If its not then please accomdate your patrons by let us move the tables. Separate tables are very awkward for groups. Thae dessert, Improve or replace the banana foster cake. The banana taste is missing from the cake and the caramel is missing from the frosting. Will I go back??? Absolutely, the food and service were amazing. I may not go back with more than 4 people but I would go back. And I would try a different dessert. After checking with the hostess twice we were told we would be a few minutes, only to have a couple that had a later reservation seated before us,. When we asked why we were still waiting we were told by the hostess that she had called us. No one had not called us. We were standing near the hostess counter ever since 1:35 PM. Another young lady came apologized and told us that our seat have been ready for a while, and she proceeded to lead us to our table. We sat at the table over 20 minutes before the young lady came again to ask us had the waitress come yet we told her no. The waitress finally came to our drink orders and our food orders. We did not get to eat until after 4 o'clock, I had to ask the waitress twice what was the holdup with our food the first time she said, she would go check which she did not do and the second time she did go inquire, and we were told they were cooking our food. I am well aware, and I understand that this was Mother's Day, that is why we made a reservation only to find out that there was no need to really. This was my first time and will most likely be my last time. The food was amazing, but the service was not there were several things on the menu that they did not have, we were told they were out of there was a drink that they were out of, so my excitement about eating at this restaurant faded very quickly. The collard greens were pretty good, the Mac and cheese was not what I expected for 5 cheese Mac and cheese. It did not have a lot of cheesy flavor and was kind of dry and a little spicy. The fried chicken breast fillet was dry but had good flavor. i would go back, but I would get vegetables only. Our server was not very attentive. Tried Flavor Hills in Durham for the first time and was pleasantly surprised with both the food and the service. Portions were very large and served nice and hot. Salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus was delicious, and the mixed berry beignets were yummy as well. The timing between courses was nicely done. I would only make one change - and that would be having the tables pre-set with silverware and napkins - and having water delivered immediately upon being seated. Some of our food came before we got our napkins and utensils, and it seemed odd that the waitress had to go fetch them. Two separate parties that also sat by the bar got their food (entrees) well before we did. We ended up waiting well over an hour for our food (and were late to our engagement). I was able to eat the inner portion which was very tasty. I believe that when a to go order is purchased, one can get items that's not up to par, because often not checked prior to departure (too much of a hassle) and restaurant knows that.
