A cute spot on the canal to grab a bite or drink that overlooks the water. We saw so many cute ducks and geese on the water! The food itself was good- I had the focaccia chicken sandwich and switched the chips with the mushrooms. I loved the garlicky button mushroom, but felt that the focaccia was a bit too oily. I did enjoy the artichoke pesto and the chicken overall. We also ordered the wings to start and the carolina bbq sauce was so good! Friends at the table ordered the fish and chips and the rib eye sandwich and I do wish that I ordered those dishes instead, which calls for return to this restaurant.
Nice atmosphere and very friendly staff. Plus, food was served really fast. Food was good, but it didn't have a whole lot of flavor. Was pretty bland and a little more expensive than I thought it should be with the portions. Was VERY turned off by the fact that adding chicken to a dish or salad was $10 extra dollars. Not a bad place by any means, but probably wouldn't be my first or second choice.
Everytime I've wanted to eat here, the restautant with it's huge waterfront patio have had a farily significant wait. So I was thrilled on a random Tuesday night where we went in and were seated immediately. Both the first time here for me & the hubs. It was a HOT day, so we sat inside & were seated in the bar area. But really the patio looks gorgeous. Hubs had the pasta arrbiata with shrimp. It definitely had a spicy kick! I had the bbq brisket grilled cheese with a side of brussels. Both were extremely tasty. It's been a week or two since we ate there, and honestly I can't remember our service - nothing sticks out in my memory. There were several different staff that passed throug hand checked on us (it's not a big bar seating area). We were seated at a bar high top but we were not drinking alcohol. I think that sometimes "disappoints" the staff - yes, our bill won't have those extra charges, but don't worry, we won't be cheap on tips, we just aren't big drinkers. (Especially on a Tuesday work night.) I would love to go back on a beautiful fall weekend, sit on the patio, watch teh canal, and have a cocktail. #yum #ReviewsByRL
I was a little disappointed with Flatwater. Someone recommended this spot a few years ago so its been on my list to visit. It was a cooler day so we ate inside and the noise level was high although there weren't very many patrons. The service was fine and the inside had more of a pub feel. I ordered the wings and Brussels sprouts and the sprouts were fine but the wings were so bland. It honestly dint taste as if there were any seasoning used at all. They were tossed in sweet chili sauce and even that had no flavor. I honestly thought I lost my taste buds until I had better food later that day. My husband is a fish and chips kind of guys and he didn't really enjoy his either for the same reason (bland).
Been by here so many times and today was the day to try it. Nice location right in Broad Ripple. The back has seating outside alongside the canal towpath. We sat inside in the bar area. It was really nice! We sat next to a huge window that was open that looked outside onto the outdoor seating and canal. The strawberry smash drinks were good that we ordered. The fish and chips looked great from what I saw and the fries looked hand cut. The batter looked like the good beer batter on them. My nachos were good and big. I asked for the bbq sauce on the side. I asked for chicken to be added to them. Mind you I looked at the menu and for the smokehouse bbq meat to be added it would be $6. Ok fine. Well, to my surprise it was $10 more to add chicken!!!!!!! I asked the waitress like hey $10!!!! That's almost another meal cost. I feel like she should've said just to let you know it's $10 more for chicken. I wouldn't have gotten it. But, the smokehouse bbq pork or brisket was $6. She said all the proteins were $10. Well, um no pork and brisket are both proteins and that was $6. So, we're not sure what the heck happened with the bill and that high price for chicken. I did like the nachos and it was a nice place. I definitely would be aware if you add anything you might get a $10 charge. This would be a nice place to watch sports games . I noticed a Brad Steven's autographed Butler basketball above one of the TV's. I will try it Flatwater again and not order the chicken nachos just the nachos lol
Went here during a spring weekend. The inside is very nice and cozy, and I could imagine it being soooooo nice during the winter. The patio was open which appeared spacious and enjoyable during the nice weather. We got a Moscow mule which was good for a mule. I got the brisket grilled cheese with fries which was great! Would get that again, Waitress was super nice as well and very attentive to our wants
Just went for lunch today and the vibe was outstanding! Their outdoor patio is one of the best in the area and I love sitting next to the river. Service is always quick and friendly. Today, I had the burger with the house-cut fries, but everything I've had on my last few visits has all been outstanding. People I were with had the panko-breaded tenderloin and the chicken focaccia sandwich and both spoke highly. Definitely a place you'll want to keep coming back, especially when the weather is nice out.
What attracts me to this place is the ambiance. On a nice day, sitting out on the deck by the water is the play. I came here with my husband to kill time, maybe grab a drink or two and enjoy the scene. We were seated immediately, they have indoor seating, but of course the day was nice so I wanted to sit outside. I didn't get a friendly vibe from our server. My husband ordered a beer quickly and I just asked for a water and a minute to look over the menu. I saw some drinks being brought to other tables so I asked our server what were they and she seemed like she didn't want to answer me or was annoyed. I decided to pass on a drink and just sip my water. My husband finished his beer and I was ready to go. I had to use the restroom before leaving, which is inside. The women's restroom has pictures of dogs all over, it was cute. This establishment is truly dog friendly.
This is friendly little bar restaurant. The menu is not huge but it sufficed. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I had the cod fish tacos. They were decent. I really liked their guacamole. It had the perfect blend.
The food definitely matched the vibes. Burger was phenomenal and the Brussel sprouts . Highly recommend they Brussel sprouts, the cook them in this mustard sauce that's really really good. Service was really good also!
Arrived here for a late lunch. We wanted to sit outside and enjoy the view along the water but the staff discouraged us as there was rain expected. The staff allowed us to sit outside with the option of moving indoors. Sure enough, the rain started and we moved inside. The interior space is small but cozy. We were looking for something fresh and more unique to eat after having BBQ and fast food the last few days and this was the perfect place for that. A good variety of dishes are offered. I ordered the korean tacos and they were perfect for the type of meal I was looking to have. Delicious flavors. Staff came by to check in on how everything was a few times. This place is super dog friendly .
This is a restaurant on the canal with a covered patio (dog-friendly). The menu is gastropubby so expect some elevated bar food favorites. They have a nice selection of rotating beers too.
I've always liked Flatwater, but hadn't been in a few years. My friend and I were wanting to sit on the patio with our pups on a Friday afternoon. There wasn't a wait and we were greeted immediately and a water bowl for our dogs was brought out quickly. We both started with the wedge salads. They were huge and could have almost been my meal! I got the BBQ pork nachos with the BBQ sauce on the side (I'm picky with barbecue sauce and I am glad I got it on the side-just my personal preference). I will say the nachos were just ok. There wasn't a lot of pork and it was a little dry (it needed more melted cheese). My friend got the steak sandwich. She said it didn't have any flavor and it's not something she'd recommend. The service was great and I always love sitting directly on the canal. I'm looking forward to coming back this summer. read more
I've been a fan of Flatwater for years - especially of their former build your own Bloody Mary bar on Sundays. While small inside, the true gem is the wonderful patio that overlooks the canal - on a summer day, nothing better than this patio. I recently went back to enjoy dinner with a friend. I opted for the nachos with chicken - ummmmmmm, delightful. While an appetizer, this is a great meal for someone and I had leftovers , so even better! The beer and cocktail menu are standard and priced just right. Staff are friendly and my food came out quickly. read more

Love coming to my fav outdoor patio!! (Even when we have to sit inside) ! Such a fun lunch spot especially on a sunny day! The nachos are amazing and perfect to share with a group of 4! The tacos are always worth it!!! I love the shrimp and fish! Limited parking but there is some on the street and if the weather is nice it would be fun to walk to canal! read more

Solid place with one of the best outside patios in Broad Ripple. Pet friendly, and a menu that rotates items in and out from time time. Wish those loaded fries were still around . I've been coming here for years and had no idea they did dessert until today. That hummingbird cake is great. read more
The vibes here on a nice sunny day are immaculate. That being said, the wait can be pretty extensive. We went for lunch around 1:30/2 and outdoor seating for 3 people was 3 hours. The restaurant isn't very big which is understandable. However, they do save your spot in line electronically so you can walk around and receive a text when your table is ready. I ordered the rum runner while waiting which was super good. The nachos were equally fantastic. I love a good Reuben so I had to give theirs a try. I will say that this is certainly not a traditional Reuben. The ingredients and prep is different - so be aware. I wouldn't prefer this over a regular Reuben sandwich but it was still good. Could have used a little more sauce. read more

The bang bang cauliflower tacos were delicious, my friend said her blackened mahi was also great... had another couple friends who both tried the smoked salmon pesto wrap and were sorely disappointed. I tasted it--it was just very bland. But, the nachos were also good. And last but not least, we tried the hummingbird cake which was so good (which means a lot coming from someone who was already full AND does not have a sweet tooth). So, that said, 5 stars. The service was good. The only odd thing was that the restaurant closed at 10p and when we were walking out at... probbbbbably like 9:50p... literally the remaining staff was sitting at the bar and clapped as we exited. I'm not knocking the restaurant because I'm gonna assume they weren't intending to be rude. But. We were a little put off by having them applaud us leaving LOL. Very strange. Flatwater is our favorite place in Broad Ripple for relaxed, outdoor dining with cold brews and both vegan & non-vegan food options! Service is consistently good and the outdoor ambiance is nice, especially if there are paw friends hanging out. If you're seated next to the canal, you'll likely observe ducks and the like in the water. :) On our latest visit, we enjoyed the rice noodle salad, Korean lettuce wraps, and black bean burger with chips. Most of the items noted as vegetarian on their menu can easily be veganized (e.g., hold the cheese). All was fresh and delicious, as always! Tip: It probably goes without saying, but if you want to dine outdoors on their patio with little to no wait, go at an off-time -- you'll have better parking options, too! read more
Friday nights at flatwater are a vibe! The place was packed and there was live music. Be prepared to have a long wait! We were told a two hour wait but it was probably an hour max. We ended up just grabbing a drink somewhere else while we waited. I got the nachos with pulled pork. So delicious and every chip had some toppings. Not the huge pile where chips on bottom have nothing. If you're not a pork fan you can also get them with chicken like my friend did but it is an up charge of $8. read more

Flatwater is somewhere I don't get to go very often, but every time I do I love it. My boyfriend and I came here during lunch on a random afternoon and I'm sure glad we did. It was a beautiful day, but a little windy so we opted to sit inside near the bar next to the large garage-style open windows. I love the atmosphere here with the inside-outside dining and being on the canal. It's the perfect lunch spot for a warm, sunny day. They had a fried cod sandwich on special that came with their house chips. The fish sandwich was really flavorful and I was able to decide what toppings I wanted on it, so I went with lettuce, onions, and pickles. The tartar sauce was served on the side. I usually do not like tartar sauce, but I tried this one and I actually thought it was pretty good. It wasn't too thick and had a lot of pickle flavor. Something that caught me by surprise was the chips! These were soo good. They were sea salt and pepper and packed with flavor. I thought I'd regret getting them instead of splurging and paying more for fries, but boy was I wrong. Overall, I have always loved this place and continue to love it. Will be back and hopefully will be sooner rather than later! read more
What a popular place! I came here for dinner with friends and we had about an 1.5 hour wait. Since we didn't have a schedule we decided to wait it out. They have a nice deck waiting area with a server that comes around for drink orders while you wait, which was great! After around 1.5 hours, we were finally seated. And with perfect timing, we were able to pull up a table to our other friends who were already seated. They got there food once we were finally able to join them but it was great to just sit by the water in the beautiful evening weather. Our server seemed stressed and it showed with his mood, but he checked in on us frequently. I ordered my first aperol spritz which was delicious. My friend and I ordered the BBQ smoked wings and loaded fries to share. Both were delicious, especially the fries. I definitely want to come back again for tacos because they seemed to be very popular! I am excited to come here throughout the summer! read more

I've always been intrigued by Flatwater since they always have music playing, so I decided to stop in for a late lunch. We were seated immediately near the front of the restaurant and our waitress was quick to get our orders. She was very attentive and constantly checked on our table. I appreciated the selection of dishes for vegetarians, and was tempted to try the bang bang cauliflower tacos. I ended up going with the blackened mahi with coconut jasmine rice. I was realllllyyy excited since I love coconut rice, but was a bit disappointed in my dish. It was oddly wet (see picture) in black bean juice (almost as if a can of black beans was dumped onto my plate). I didn't taste any of the coconut flavor in the rice and the fish was over cooked to the point where I couldn't cut into it with a fork. I saw other pictures of the same dish on Yelp, and mine seems to look the most different. Maybe it was just an off day, but the meal was pricy so I was disappointed. The next time I come here I would like to try the tacos. read more
Gorgeous atmosphere and great food! The waitress was so incredibly nice! The Red Slipper cocktail was wonderful! Unfortunately this was one of out later stops in the day after a lot of other food, so I only had the tuna tartar this time, but it was absolutely delicious! We don't eat land animals but one of our friends we went with got the Reuben and could not stop raving about it, she actually ended up going back the next day and ordering it again! I did snag a bridle sprout and they were amazingly delicious! Picture attached for other meat eaters to check out! Flatwater is easily one of the best places I have been to in all of the capital! The attention to detail, menu variety, simple yet tasteful and easy to enjoy atmosphere, and real focus on customer service with not just two coming around to make sure we are having a good time and satisfied with our orders makes for a top-tier dining experience. Easy to see why I was told this is often booked solid and pushing for long waits. We happened to time our arrival right, a casual Monday afternoon before 5:00, us six guys were seated right away. I noticed the draft menu was small yet offering decent variety and right picking for winter sipping. The dark stout I had was perfect and set up a need for appetizers. We tried the calamari, brisket nachos, and Cuban wings. The plates showed up looking decently full for expensive appetizers. Could have complained about penny pinching but realized quit quick that at these flavors and chef skills the apps here are definitely worth the starting charge to excite the appetizers. We all enjoyed the savory and sweet eats! Fantastic nachos, well topped, the calamari especially tender and uniquely done for a casual American grill, much higher quality than expected. Two of us went for the brisket Ruben. Given how many I've sampled in the area twas an easy tie with the kimchi Reuben from Half Pint, amazing and perfectly made meats balanced with the slaw and bread. There were no complaints from the other five with me. Made me feel so good having picked out this place near randomly on a whim to fill up time and ourselves before my friends late flight back to Denver, we all would do Flatwater again! Indianapolis can be proud of this ideal dining spot. read more

Our first time here did not disappoint! Friendly staff and outstanding food. The side of Brussels were delicious and sweet. The cauliflower tacos were yummy; slightly pricey at $14 without including a side but still worth it. The tacos were big enough for 5 of us to share. Metered parking out front was free on a Sunday. read more
First time at Flatwater and it was wonderful. The music and environment gave me a southern/bayou feel. The service was top notch. Our server Danny recommended the Black Bean Tacos and they were excellent. A thin layer of cheese between the tortillas and bit of a kick really make them. I also tried a bit of my friends Brussel sprouts which were delici. We were also brought drinks by the manager AND he bussed our table when we finished eating and made conversation. Danny was also very funny and patient. The employees here seem to like their job and it shows. I will definitely be making return trips to Flatwater. read more

I ordered this Pulled Pork Tacos (as pictured); which were solid. The nachos are great, and the calamari is great. It's in a really neat area too and I would imagine it would be nice to eat outside.(I didn't because it was January 3.) definitely recommend. read more

I visited Flatwater for the first time with coworkers this week & was very impressed! The Baja Shrimp tacos were DELICIOUS. I added avocado and it made them even more scrumptious! I was stuffed but we celebrated my birthday so our server brought chocolate cake and it was amazing as well. Very light & fluffy! Our server (can't think of his name) was really down to earth and very great at his job. He took great care of us! We will definitely be back! read more

Looking for an easy go-to with good food, great service, and a great outdoor patio? Look no further. Flatwater is your answer. The nachos were amazing-- definitely add the pulled pork. You will not be sorry. The garlic mushrooms were so delicious that even my 5 year old ate them up. The kids menu has all of the classics-- Mac n cheese, cheeseburger, chicken tenders, etc-- and the back patio was open enough that they could comfortably get up and move a bit without being in the way. And they loved watching the ducks on the water while we ate. Rounded out with some local beers on tap to try -- we will be back next time we're in the area! read more
Met a friend for dinner on a Thursday evening. One of the nicest weather wise for some time. We arrived at 5:30, but the outside seating was already full. We could have waited, but they offered seating in the bar by a huge window, it was perfect. We ordered our drinks and shared a calamari appetizer, it taste great. I then had the blackened mahi on coconut rice; it was incredible. The rice reminded more of risotto; I ate all of it which is unusual for me. The mango chutney was perfect with the mahi. My only disappointment was the lack of dessert choices, they had two. Fortunately since this is in broad ripple, it was a short walk to an ice cream place. I will return. read more

Came here with the girls for drinks and snacks and the vibes were superb!! I will say the patio was surprisingly busy with a wait time too for a Tuesday at 7pm?! The tuna tacos were delicious but honestly had a major kick that I wasn't expecting and was low key really spicy. Wish I had a heads up but still worth chugging the glass of water. One of my friends also ordered the wings appetizer and I was surprised that she got as many wings as she did - she said they were amazing and they were super juicy and flavorful. Overall their menus, food and drink, had a great selection and I can't wait to be back to try it again! Definitely not to be missed when in broad ripple for a late dinner. read more
We had our Friday night date night here on 10/28/22 I had just washed my hair before leaving the house and I was freezing. When we arrived at the restaurant the hostess got us a table immediately. While I appreciate that there was no wait, the table that we were seated at was directly in front of the door. I informed the waitress that I was freezing and the server moved us immediately. I appreciated that. We got calamari as an appetizer, and it was good. I prefer smaller pieces that are crunchy but I still enjoyed theirs. I also got a pasta and shrimp dish that wasn't very flavorful but still enjoyable. Parking was bad but not the restaurant fault. All in all it was a nice evening read more

Service was so amazing. We told them we were in a rush to pick up my brother and they sat us down, gave us drinks and took our orders within 10 minutes of us sitting down. The food was pretty good too. The place has a very friendly and homey vibe, so overall this was a great experience! 10/10 would recommend whether you're in a rush or not :) read more
Saturday at 6:30 we decided to wonder over to Flatwater and see if we could get a table. They put our name on the list and told us it would be about 45 minutes. We took a walk to grab an ice cream elsewhere before settling in for a walk. Within about 20 minutes they called sharing that they had an area free where we could have a cocktail and an appetizer while we waited for our table which would soon be ready. This restaurant handled social distancing protocols so well, while simultaneously not sacrificing service. When our table quickly became available they promptly brought our drinks there instead. The ambiance on the deck on the water is awesome. The food was good, lots to choose from. Loved my cocktail, it tasted like summer. Definitely check this place out while the weather is still great. read more
We had a fun brunch here today before we headed back to Chicago. All of the staff seemed to be in a great mood, which rubbed off on the diners! The location on the canal is awesome, they have a great deck and we felt comfortable eating outside. The food was good, it was nothing super exciting, but it was tasty and we enjoyed everything. read more
