Had my first opportunity to hunt for Elk in Colorado last year with Flat Tops Wilderness Guides!
After some thought a friend and I decided to try the drop camp option during first rifle season. Cliff helped us snag a couple of tags last minute and we were set for the big trip!
Throughout the months prior to opening day we had many questions for Cliff (Outfitter/Owner). He was as helpful as can be in answering our questions and painted a pretty good picture of what to expect to be prepared for the trip.
I must say, he could not prepare us for the trip with words alone! Between the beauty of the mountains, peace and quiet of the remote camp and fantastic weather, it was more than I could have really hoped for or expected!
We had every type of weather you could imagine from rainy, damp, foggy days, freezing cold and snow, to sunny and bright blue skies with enough sun to give me a sun burn!
Although we chose to go it alone, Cliff and his professional/knowledgeable staff knew the terrain, animal habits, area, etc. and were more than happy to share info to help us.
After a few close calls and many miles of hiking we finally crossed paths with a beautiful bull about 9 am on a snow covered, sunny hillside. It was all we needed, and minutes later we were admiring the animal and recalling the moments before the shot.
Now the real work started, after quartering the bull Cliff's crew showed up and handled the rest. From our animal to the camp, packout was a breeze!
I have to say, it was a fantastic trip and I enjoyed it tremendously. I will go back again and chase Elk someday with Cliff and his crew. I would also like to try one of the fishing trips in the summertime!
