"Adventures in Whitewater" provided a true adventure on the Colorado River for our group. Partially since nature was on their side, partly due to the expertise of our guide, Johnny, and due to the people on the river.
Our adventure began with a wonderful, once in a lifetime experience provided by nature, as well as the expertise of Johnny. As we were coming to the first bend in the river Johnny pointed out a Bald Eagle flying around the corner. He, as well as all the guides, knew to be observant in this area because each year the eagles build a new nest in the same tree on the side of the river. We got a glimpse of the magnificent bird. Johnny was determined that we get a better view. We paddled quickly to try to see her again. He told us to look for what may appear to be a golf ball, which could be her head. Each of us looked intently. My daughter said she thought she saw large wings on the river bank. Johnny guided us in that direction. To our amazement, a baby bald eagle was perched on the river bank. We pulled off to the side of the water just feet from the magnificent animal. This bird had no fear of us. Obviously Mom Eagle was out hunting while baby decided to venture from the nest. Occasionally he would spread his wings and make movements with his beak but just watched us while we watched him. The most amazing bird we had ever seen!
Johnny was well respected by others on the water. He proved to be very aware of his surroundings. Noticing when the water became so mild that the trip became a bit mundane, he came up with entertaining ideas to amuse our group. His stories and experiences were unique, interesting and generally entertaining. He had the ability to guide the raft to more exciting water. He came up with more exciting ways to venture down the water, such as around in circles or playing silly games he invented. He was able to control the waves to splash on different individuals in the boat, resulting in a cold, shocking spray followed by laughter by all.
At the end of our half day trip we regretted not signing up for the full day. The other boats were getting ready to enjoy a fried chicken picnic and a few more adventuresome hours. On our way back to the whitewater office, we were able to pull off the road to view other rapids and sights. Johnny showed us a local owned meat market that sells buffalo steaks as well as some beef, buffalo jerky, seasonings, sides, etc. We stopped as we left town. That night we grilled out. The meat was amazing!!! The buffalo jerky was moist and tasty as well. Ask them the name and location. Definitely worth the stop!
Your adventure can only be as fun as you, your group, and your guide make it. I felt the entire team at "Adventures in Whitewater" went above and beyond to make our experience the best it could be!! read more
