I had a problem with a gas fireplace that was installed over 3 years ago by an independent contractor.

The Fireplace Shoppe - Fireplace insert

The Fireplace Shoppe

We recently had a gas insert installed and couldn't be happier! The team at the Fireplace Shoppe…read morewas fantastic--Bob talked us through our options in the showroom, Carol made scheduling a breeze over the phone, and Gary, the owner, kept us informed during weather-related delays. Despite some setbacks due to bad weather, Gary adjusted the schedule to ensure our installation wouldn't be delayed further. The installers were courteous, efficient, and left our home immaculate. We highly recommend their services!

Take your time and money elsewhere…read more This company forced my construction contractor into a contract with a $5k deposit to answer straight-forward questions, couldn't deliver the product on time, then decided to keep the money. After a lot of back and forth, my contractor ended up losing $1k total. If you want the entire fiasco, just continue reading. I am having an addition put on my house. My designer pointed me to this shop so I thought this place would be reliable, despite the place being small and having limited showroom selections. In September, I found one nice unit at The Fireplace Shoppe. I was told it was their best selling unit--they sold it all the time. Then things took a bad turn. My contractor needed very precise information regarding this fireplace and called staff at The Fireplace Shoppe for information. After a home visit, the folks at The Fireplace Shoppe refused to answer any more questions unless my contractor signed a contract. The questions basically boiled down to a few quick measurement questions for fit. My contractor (under duress), then signed a contract with The Fireplace Shoppe after being told I would have my unit within a few weeks. As soon as the contract was signed, my contractor was told the unit was in high demand nationally and would not be available until the very end of December 2025 as a best case scenario-three months away!! This timeframe was completely not feasible for my project timeline and my contractor asked The Fireplace Shoppe to search high and low for the fireplace. Within 24 hours The Fireplace Shoppe told my contractor no fireplace was available--they had checked everywhere and would keep checking. I personally began to look for the exact fireplace in warmer locations nationwide and found it with Embers Living in Colorado. It was their last one and I bought it immediately over the phone, fearing it would get snatched up otherwise. They shipped me the fireplace and I crossed my fingers it would arrive cross country without getting damaged. Once we received it in October free of issues, we contacted The Fireplace Shoppe to let them know we located the exact same fireplace and to ask them to install it out of the $5k deposit money. At that point, The Fireplace Shoppe accused my contractor of breach of contract and refused to install the new unit I found. And they had the AUDACITY to say they would keep the entire $5K deposit they took from my contractor. I reached out to Chimney Cricket in Media because I knew they also installed this brand of fireplace. I saw the brand when I toured their extensive and inviting showroom--night and day on the amount of selections. Chimney Cricket informed me they could do the installation once they came to the house to verify the fireplace was authentic and new. They came over, took a look, and professionally and beautifully installed it. I wouldn't trust anything about The Fireplace Shoppe. I wouldn't bother going there to select from a few fireplaces in a small room. I wouldn't even trust them for servicing a fireplace. Take your business elsewhere. This company eventually decided they would reimburse my contractor $4k, so they somehow feel entitled to $1k of money for a visitation service that other fireplace shops in the area do for free. Woodstove Junction LLC folks stopped by 2 times for the same addition and took 2 calls (1 lengthy)--didn't charge me a dime and treated my contractor very well. I decided to get a very nice electric fireplace unit from Woodstove Junction and was never pushed into anything. You don't have to risk shopping at The Fireplace Shoppe. There are better area options for showrooms and service. It should be an amusing read, if The Fireplace Shoppe responds to this review and tries to defend themselves.

The work was incredibly slow with very little explanation of timeline…read more Originally, we were told it would be a three day job and we explained we were on a timeline. The crew worked varied hours (as little as one hour one day) with little communication about what was done. The whole project took over a week to complete. The owner came to the house and measured everything to get a quote. We were told the crew would start the job on December 3rd (originally 11/25th). They arrived unprepared, without materials, and to measure again. They were aware that the job was moving forward so they could have measured before 12/3, but made no effort to prepare for the work. The owner said they had to proof the chimney (however, we were told that the actual work would have begun on 12/3 since the measurements were already taken and documented on the original quote). More than weather appeared to have impacted the job's completion. A lack of planning around the weather appeared to have impacted the job. A metal flashing was installed as a barrier in my young daughter's room. It was not cut to size, had sharp edges that could have cut her, and was done with exceptionally poor craftsmanship expected of an apprentice, at best. We requested it removed and done properly. The flashing was removed and, in the process of removing it, damaged the chimney. They did not repair the damage they caused leaving holes in the chimney where they screwed in multiple masonry screws. More about this later. At one point we did speak to the craftsman about the flashing and the speech was incoherent, circular, and jumbled making it difficult to understand what was said. At one point in the job, our router and blink cameras (inside and outside the house) were unplugged and disabled while they were working in our house without us present. I had to call the office to have them call the crew to plug them back in as we use them to see that our kid gets off the bus and safely home. After that conversation due to concerns about the crew, the timeframe, and work , multiple attempts were made to contact the owner. Office staff fielded the calls and told us to write down our concerns and share them with the owner. Finally, on the last day of the job, the owner arrived unannounced at our house while my wife was home. He did not call nor return any phone calls. When we did speak to him, he was rude, condescending, and told us he didn't return our phone calls because he was away. He is the principal operator and owner and, according to his office staff, inaccessible as the primary and only decision maker. Never once during our phone calls were we informed the owner was inaccessible because he was away and not taking phone calls related to HIS BUSINESS. When he did arrive in the final day he dismissed our concerns, interrupted us multiple times (at one point telling us to hurry up because he knew what I was going to say - even before I said it) and refused to fix the damage done when taking off the flashing because "it was not in the contract". When I criticized his dismissiveness of our concerns and lack of accessibility as owner of the company, he engaged in ad hominem attacks against me by calling me a bully (using a definition of bullying he created) while referencing his grandson's school project on bullying. The only thing that was done in a timely fashion was cashing the check I wrote them for services. Even the invoice documenting payment took two days. I would encourage people looking for quality customer service, good communication, reliable work, valid timelines, and an invested owner that is accessible to cast a wide net before settling on Swift. All that being said, they do a good job sweeping/cleaning chimneys so there's that.
