When I reached out for assistance or some level of accommodation, Amanda's response was to "just take a plane, it's only an 8-minute flight." For a family of four, that's about $70 per person $280 one way with no guarantee of getting a ferry back. That could easily turn into another $280, bringing the total to $560. That's not a small or casual expense, and it felt unrealistic to suggest it so casually. What made this more frustrating is that I wasn't even asking for a full refund. I was simply hoping for some understanding and a reasonable accommodation given the situation. As a comparison, the car rental company we used showed genuine care without me even asking, they refunded 75%. That level of consideration stood out. In contrast, the response I received here felt dismissive. Instead of acknowledging the situation or the financial impact, it felt like assumptions were made about what I could afford. That's not the kind of customer service you expect when traveling with your family. Just something to keep in mind as you plan your stay customer service and empathy matter, especially when things don't go as planned.

The prices/night are very reasonable so I definitely recommend staying here. You won't get the newest amenities or anything like you would at the W hotel nearby, but as long as you don't care about that, you'll be happy here. It's a humble yet clean guesthouse very close to the main Isabel II area on the north side of Vieques. It's walking distance to convenience stores, restaurants, ATMs, car rentals, equipment rentals, and the ferry port! (15 mins) To get to the south side of the island near Esperanza, where there's beautiful beaches like La Chiva (blue beach), Secret Beach, and Sun Bay Beach, you'll need to rent a car or call a taxi that's $5/pp (I recommend 741TAXI). When checking in, they helped us book a glass-bottom biobay tour right away which was important because they get booked quickly! When we went to the beaches, Joe also loaned us beach towels and his beach chairs!! The guesthouse does not provide shampoo and conditioner (take note) and since it was too late to go out to get anymore, Joe went back to his house next door and gave us some in plastic cups! Since rental cars were all sold out, Joe recommended his friend Edgar who might be available to drive us around all day as a personal chauffeur for a fixed (and what I thought, very reasonable) price. We ended up going with him and had the best day ever - hassle free. Coffee is free in the morning and breakfast is additional. They were so incredibly accommodating and helpful during our whole stay, our Vieques visit would not have been the same without them.

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! DIRTY, UNPROFESSIONAL, DARK, NO WIFI…read more We were only here for one night and encountered an OBSCENE amount of issues. The main ones including lack of cleanliness, an infestation of insects (spiders, at least 40 mosquitos in our unit, termites, a cockroach, and tons of dead millipedes in this tiny place), URINE in the toilet when we arrived, a very unpleasant, stifling smell of bleach, completely unreliable WiFi, and the bedding and pillowcases did not appear clean. It was also MUCH smaller than the pictures in the listing. We slept on top of some clothing we brought and the dirty (but cleaner than the sheets) towels from the bathroom for two hours before waking up at 5 am to leave. It was not the trip we'd hoped for at all. We really wanted to work this out with the host, Samantha and not involve Airbnb or publicly express our experience, but we've been left with no choice. We wrote Samantha on Airbnb the night we encountered the issues and the next day (day we left). No response. We called Tradewinds (the B&B this is in) six times over that next week to rectify the situation, but Samantha never returned our calls. We emailed her after a week of no responses with all the photos we'd originally sent and a request for a conversation. She finally responded and told us to write this all in the Airbnb chat. We did. She never replied and denied our refund request. She wouldn't offer us anything and ignored us completely. Our stay itself was worth one star, but we didn't expect this customer service to be so disheartening. We've never had a stay or experience like this and have stayed in $10 hostels that were cleaner and nicer and we paid $200 for this! As a business owner/host, I would never let my guests get to this point - let alone have the experience they had. We are extremely disappointed in every bit of this experience. There are much cuter, cleaner and kinder places to stay in Vieques.

During the day, Mike and/or John are available to troubleshoot anything for you and give wonderful advice on local attractions. I tried some that were not on the list and they are as follows: -Tin Box: If you're craving sushi on the island, this is a great place to check out. -Green beach: Rumored to have conch shells but I guess I wasn't that lucky. We had also gone post light rain, so the long road there was covered in puddles of unknown depths. Would highly recommend a generous application of bug repellent if you go. We were swarmed by a little cloud of gnats and I got little non-itchy polka dots on my arms by the time I was through -Seagate Horseback Riding: Only a good idea if you're intermediate to advance in horseback riding. The horses are not lead or strung together. There were also parts of the ride where the horses seemed to be trained to go a a trot. At these speeds, I almost slid off the horse! Definitely not the romantic walk along the beach on horses that I was envisioning. Hope you enjoy your Vieques stay!

What can I say about this place…read more.. We've waited for 3 months to eat here. Once we settled down in our new place we decided it was time! We had the shrimp "all you can eat" as our main course, and conk fritters, and mozzarella sticks as appetizers. We also had a few cocktails. The appetizers were great, and the rum punch was by far the best, and that's where it went from having to having . While I was enjoying the shrimp, I bit into a plastic bag, I didn't make a big deal out of it. I just ordered another. And then I chomped down on another pice of plastic. The waitress was kind enough to take my meal of the bill. But never apologized, she just laughed it off. She was great, we did have to ask for more water a few times. I would recommend this place to travelers, it's a great location, and pretty good drinks.. And the VIEW IS EPIC!! A little dark but other then the plastic... Everyone else's food was spectacular!!

We just returned from Vieques and are eagerly planning our next trip there! We stayed with Joe and Mimi and it was HEAVEN. From my first email exchange (after EXTENSIVE lodging research) I knew we had found our place to stay. When we arrived at their Casita, I hugged Mimi - she already felt like an old friend. Their place is ADORABLE, clean - perfect and has EVERYTHING you could possibly need during your stay from beach gear (chairs, umbrellas, coolers, etc.), aloe vera, bug spray, cozy towels, a fridge, coffeemaker, maps, great books to read, even yahtzee and scrabble. Seriously, you can pack light because they make everything SO comfortable and enjoyable. Great garden area and patio which you are welcome to use and enjoy... They are LOVELY people - really do feel like new friends. Joe and my boyfriend Brian bonded over beer and music while Mimi and I talked about everything else... We hung out with them on the Malecon and back at the casita - they were friendly and available but also let us enjoy ourselves - it was the perfect balance. Finally, on our last day, I had arranged for a publico to take us to the ferry but the driver never showed but Joe and Mimi had waited to make sure we got off okay so they saved the day and Joe took us to the ferry dock so we didn't miss our boat! This is why... My party and I unfortunately had the worst experience when we stayed at Hix Island House in Vieques and strongly advise potential vacationers to book at other accommodations in Vieques (Such as El Blok). We felt that the listing on Expedia where we booked our stay through was very misleading since none of the amenities mentioned were actually available, such as the pool and yoga. The property felt like a ghost town with us only being able to communicate with the manager via phone as even reception hours were inaccurate. In addition, the only other guests staying at the time mentioned they received an email that the pool was broken and we were never communicated until we brought this up to management. To make matters worse, my friend had an injury happen at Hix Island House in the horse floor fence. While it had a sign to hold onto the rail, there was a pole sticking out of the wall that the rail was on which made my friend have to walk around the pole and have her fall through the fence. While we booked for 2 nights we only stayed one night after this ordeal and when we requested a full refund due to all the reasons above, the hotel through Expedia only approved a partial refund. Even after pleading our case to why a full refund should be given no acknowledgment/ at the bare minimum an apology was made by management of Hix Island House or Expedia.

Overall for the price, this place is worthwhile if you are on a budget. Nothing fancy and it's clean. New owners, Kurt and Kelly, bought the place 7 months ago and are in the process of making renovations. Our initial impression was great. Everyone we came across was very nice and pleasant (except for Kelly, one of the owners, which I will get to). We stayed in room 5 closest to the kitchen/bar area. First morning, we are woken up by workers talking loudly outside our door and slamming doors (the doors were swelling due to the humidity, so understood). We approached Kelly to ask if we could cancel the rest of our stay after telling our story and she directed us to speak with Kurt. (Side note: my wife is pregnant and this is our babymoon and all we want is to be able to sleep in on our vacation) Her attitude was borderline annoyed and passive aggressive. Kurt told us we could cancel but he could only refund us 100 dollars for our 5 night stay. Ok, no problem. He then offered to move us to another room away from any potential noise. Sweet! We chatted him up and he was great. Very accommodating. So we move into the room and everything seems ok. We go out for the day and come back to our air conditioning not being cold at all. We wait a few hours to see if it improves but it's still barely cold. It's extremely humid here right now and 85-90 degrees and the windows to our room are not sealed completely (blinds). On the way out to dinner. I approach Kelly nicely with a smile and ask if she can have someone check out the air conditioner. She blew me off completely and asked if we left the air conditioning running all day. Call me crazy but are we really expected to turn the AC off in a room we are paying to stay in which was advertised as having AC?! What if we wanted to stay in the room all day? Were we supposed to sweat ourselves into misery? Not to mention but when we returned from our excursions the AC was ironically set to FAN ONLY. She then proceeded to tell me the rooms originally didn't have AC and that they put them in (not sure what the point of that was) and that's the way the air conditioners are (apparently not cold at all). She then told us she could put us back into our original room which was just patronizing at that point and unnecessary. If this is the attitude any owner is going to take with their guests, the business is going to fail. Air conditioning that works (if you're going to advertise that you have it) and being able to sleep past 7AM shouldn't be too much to ask for. There are plenty of people that are going to be much worse to deal with than us. Save yourself the time and stress on vacation, spend some more, and stay at the malecon or hacienda tamarindo if you come to Vieques. Kudos to everyone at Bananas, but Kelly is the problem.
