At the head of the dilapidated 20th Street Plaza, is the Flakowitz Bagel Inn, clearly visible by East Boca traffic on Federal Hwy. Aside from the questionable plaza, the free parking was plentiful and directly in front of the eatery. Ordered several sandwiches at the walk up take out window that posed some confusion by two servers. My attempt for them to crack a smile was futile. But the food was prepared quickly and looked and smelled fantastic. The pastrami (does NOT include melted cheese as a standard topping - $2 more !!!) sandwiches were NOT oversized with two small sides (cole slaw was great but fries limp) for the hefty price of $18.00 which may strain a few wallets. The inside was very basic and required a face life unless the intent was to keep a retro image. The gender assigned bathroom was basic and clean with brown porcelain floor tiles and an oddly positioned dining room chair next to the garbage can. The sandwich was overloaded with thick tomato and heavy lettuce -- see pic and you decide, I'm not exaggerating -- also flavorless and had to add salt and pepper. One of the best places in town! Great real home fried potatoes, delicious Blueberry pancakes. It's a great restaurant. However, just be aware that it is a small and cramped place full of elderly customers. Holly was the lady that was greeting and seating everyone with such a great smile and disposition. I had a pretty disappointing experience at Flakowitz today. I came in alone, and the place was more than half empty. When I asked for a table, I was seated at a very small one. I politely asked if I could sit at a four-top since I planned to do a bit of paperwork on my laptop while waiting for my food. The response I got was unexpectedly rude. The staff member said "I guess," and then followed it up with a snarky comment asking if I was going to be "camping out." I explained I was just there for a bagel, coffee, and to do some quick work while I ate, but the attitude continued. At that point, I politely said "no thank you," got up, and left. No one should feel unwelcome for simply wanting to sit, eat, and get a little work done--especially when there were plenty of open tables. If you're someone who values basic courtesy and a welcoming atmosphere, you may want to reconsider coming here. read more

Hello Flakowitz, Here is your review, from me, as a first time customer and I shopped your location, too: 1. Unappealing store front, dirty walk way, walking into a restaurant, looking at four old planters, and with dead plants in them. Bad first impression. 2. Being greeted by Holly, I asked her where I could make a take-out order. I wanted to see what was in the cases first, and the entire front of the cases were being armed by five armed pinkerton guards (employees) who never excused themselves, to allow me to see what I could order in the cases. No one offered me a menu and then told me I had to go outside to place my order. So convoluted and unprofessional. 3. I went outside to this dirty, area the had old pvc piping (one side with an old table top and one without) to place my order. Dirty area, old building and a crooked menu that was hanging by two bungy-cords. (I should have left then) 4. When we received our overpriced tuna fish sandwich, with lettuce and tomato, on a toasted sesame seed bagel and with one black & white cookie. Where do I begin? The bagel was not toasted, they gave us a poppy-seed bagel instead of what I asked for. The tuna was okay and not very flavorful. The pickle was old and scaly, and the homemade cole slaw was inedible and not homemade. The Black & White cookie was yellow on the inside. I have been eating black & white cookies for a long time and from New Jersey. This cookie was old, black and white cookies are never yellow on the inside content and the plastic was sticking to the icing, which meant it was sitting for a while. Disappointing and quite frankly, pissed me off. 5. As a thirty-five year resident of this state, the owner of the Flakowitz mall is a slum lord. The location is too old to be serving food in a building that is far beyond the "food safe & hygiene" standards. The entire mall is a dump and needs to be leveled and rebuilt. Flakowitz needs to understand the value, respect, and quality to the Jewish Cuisine of delicious deli. As an Italian- American, no one knows food choices and restaurants, better than the Italian and Jewish cultures. My impression of food quality, appearance and overall experience to my visit at Flakowitz, and to what I thought was supposed to be an excellent and quality Jewish-Deli Cuisine, and in Boca Raton, was disappointing, a waste of my time, and money. My reason for trying this place was the big lines I saw building outside. If so many people are willing to stand in that long line, It must be good. It is a small restaurant with a walk pickup window. It has a big parking area and the place is easy to find. The inside looked crowded. This is a busy restaurant. I made things easy and ordered from the window outside. A menu is conveniently posted outside. I got up to the window and asked "What's good here" The person working responded with something like everything, and then she said something about how good the bagels are. She was friendly. I liked her service. I ended up getting a garlic bagel with Nova spread and Matzo Ball soup. The bagels were a good size. I liked them. The soup was good. The price was fair. So I've lived in East Boca for 18 years and before last week had only been to Flakowitz once, perhaps 16 years ago. Let's not waste any keystrokes explaining why. Let's just get to the bottom line: their food is incredible. Their service is beyond impressive, especially for South Florida, and for the quality and quantity of what's served, their pricing is reasonable. O while I have driven by many times and seen people waiting in line to get inside for a table, I didn't appreciate why until my recent experiences using their on-line take-out ordering system. And here's what happened. Their app was easy to follow, dividing foods into various groups (salads, deli sandwiches, breakfast specials, commuter specials, etc), and they also had nuances like being able to select WELL DONE when ordering French Fries. Let's be real folks,!have you ever seen that before on a take-out ordering menu? I haven't. And how many times have you gone somewhere and you ordered the fries well done or crispy and you get lightly fried soggy fries. Way. Too many. I've had corned beef on rye and the corned beef is lean and so much on the sandwich my jaw hurt after eating. Turkey club was humongous and tasty, especially so when using a bit of their homemade Russian dressing. The potato latke was the best I've ever had. No contest. Think I'm exaggerating? Order it yourself. Chicken noodle soup was plentiful with noodles, chicken, carrots, celery. And NOT salty. Matzoh Ball soup had fluffy balls. And you can order extra ones which I did. The Apple turnover was huge, enough to be cut into quarters and you still had large portions. And the corn muffin I bought for my husband was too large even for his big eyes. E only ate half. When approaching the front door at 7:30 Am there was someone to open it. And a hostess there to greet and sit you. And several waitresses. All with name tags. And positive attitudes. Now isn't that strange for South Florida? I glanced over at the take out are where sandwiches were being prepared and the person cutting open bagels cleaned the knife after every slice. Yeah, for real. The takeout items were all wrapped in Saran, especially the soups. Lots of mustard and ketchup was provided. It was well organized. I'm looking forward to returning and sitting in their dining room for a meal. And I'm certain the service will be more than expected. Casual delicatessen for breakfast and lunch. It's been a while since we ate here (pre pandemic), and we decided to hit up this staple in the Boca area. Sad to say, I left disappointed and not sure I'll return for a sit down meal. Took a long time to get our order in, and no-one seemed to notice us. The Cole slaw had a sharp taste that wasn't appealing to the palette. My tuna melt was just okay and not very flavorful. The potato pancake was good. Went there yesterday. The food was standard fair, service was okay. I seldom look at the bill because I eat pretty much the same thing for breakfast everyday and know the about cost. For some reason I checked the bill over. To my shock I was charged 2.95 for 6 pads of butter that the waitress placed on the table. I ate one pad of butter with my grits! I want to know how that charge is calculated. I also want to let you know we will never eat there again. The freaking food you serve needs butter in some items like toast or bagels. Delicious lunch. My parents took me while I was visiting Boca Raton. Atmosphere was nice, very crowded, service was attentive. We had two servers. I can't tell you how happy I was to find a Jewish deli near my new workplace. Flakowitz has tasty classic fare and the takeout window is perfect for those grabbing a quick bite during lunch break. I've had their matzoh ball soup and their egg, bacon, and cheese commuter special sandwich on a sesame bagel. Both were delicious! The matzoh ball was super fluffy and I loved the inclusion of the noodles, it made the soup very filling. The egg sandwich was way bigger than I expected (a good thing!) and the bagel was perfectly toasty with the right amount of chew. The best part? The weekday commuter specials are a steal, coming in at around $8 for a fully-loaded sandwich. While I've never had a sit-down meal here, I'm honestly really confused at the negative reviews mentioning the service. Most of the clientele appeared to be older locals so I kind of stuck out, but that didn't matter one bit. This place is a cute little spot. I surprisingly still haven't tried their bagels yet, but I plan to one day. I love that they give you a little marble cake before your meal. My kids go crazy over that, and who doesn't love a sweet treat in the morning. I don't know the whole background history of this place, but it feels kind of like a mom and Pop restaurant. She had oatmeal and a bagel with cream cheese. Both were very good. I had a lox platter. I only wish they would list what it comes with, it comes with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber tomatoes, thats what I knew because they told me that much. What they didn't tell me about was the tasteless half sour pickle and the coleslaw. I prefer a sour pickle and I hate coleslaw. Other then the onion was sad, everything else was good. I don't get why there were so many people waiting. It took quite a while for service and even longer to get the food. They bring out the toasted bagels about 15 minutes before they bring out the rest of your breakfast order, so the bagels are cold by time you eat. Nothing was correct about my order except the soda. My husband ordered an English muffin and he got the same bagel as I ordered. He asked for hot sauce, but never got it. Plus, in a place like this you expected bagels are made correctly by boiling first and then baking. These tasted no different than a regular roll. The two stars are just for being nice. I don't think they will care about what I thought as there were enough 90 year olds to keep the place busy. As a late riser, I love a place that serves breakfast past 11am. I usually crave an egg dish when I wake up and hard to find when so many places start lunch "early". So here we were, craving breakfast at noon, and how lucky that Flakowitz was just 5 minutes away. We checked the menu and pictures on Yelp and before I knew it we were putting out name on the wait list. It is a popular place, especially in the weekends, but even if you see a long line, don't worry, they work hard on moving fast and having tables available in a reasonable time. We waited, maybe 10 minutes, and were shown to our table. Immediately got menus, water, coffee and their complimentary marble cake. They serve a piece of this per person, and it's delicious. Server kept checking on other tables while we decided on what to order. Placed our order and soon after our food was out. I got one of their omelet with home fries on the side and a bagel (you can substitute this with toast or muffin). The portion is big, enough to have leftovers to leave you really full the next day too. Service is just what you would expect from a "dinner" type place, they serve the food, come back to ask if everything's OK but then they kind of "disappear". To the point we had to go pay at the counter, and get our own boxes to go, because our server never came back to check us out. But, no big deal, I was happy to have gotten my breakfast for "lunch" and it was good! read more
