No, Captain and Co is a fish and chip shop with class, which isn't a bad thing, especially when it comes to fish and chips. Unfortunately I was in a bit of a rush so I couldn't hang around for too long, so instead of going for something big I simply grabbed what I normally grab in a fish and chip shop - minimum chips. What I can say is that the serving was smaller than most, which isn't a bad thing because some of those servings can be so large that I can't finish them, oh and they were pretty good as well. Oh, the also have their fish laid out under the counter, which once again isn't like your standard shop, but rather like a shop in a fish market. Certainly a place to check out if you are in the area.

After booking here for my birthday dinner, I suddenly realised that of course it's upstairs and my mother has a bad knee and I couldn't remember if there was a lift/elevator. I sent an email to restaurant and was replied to promptly and courteously saying that yes, they have a lift. Great. We go to use it to get upstairs, and some kids were playing in it going up and down and not letting us in. Their parents were oblivious to the bratty behaviour, and so she had to climb up a steep staircase. That almost set the tone for the night, but what made up for it, was the great service. Everyone was friendly and attentive. We were told of the specials for the night (which was seafood and not everyone can eat seafood - a fact not every restaurant realises), and given our menus in reasonable time. Food came out promptly and everything was delicious. Before the entrees came out, there was hot bread given to the table and it was sooooooo yum. I ordered the Fish 'n Chips for main, and fish was so incredibly white, fresh and moist; just perfect. The batter was crisp and tasty. The chips though, were less than a handful of thick wedges and we felt this may not be enough so we ordered a side bowl of shoestring fries (a way to make you fork out more money and possibly the only disappointing "fault"). Everyone enjoyed the meal they had. Desserts all sounded tempting, and the presentation when it came out was beautiful. I had asked for a component to be left out since I don't like coffee flavoured foods, and they accommodated and even came back out with a substitute suggestion. It was scrumptious. Throughout the night we were treated to a magnificent view of Melbourne city and the bay. It's a stunning location for a great celebratory meal. I know it would be even better in summer, but then again it would probably be stifling hot too. I loved going there in winter, and with the food and service being as excellent as it was, I'll definitely be going back again. They do apparently do breakfasts (and lunch?) and would love to try a breakfast there while the area isn't yet too busy. If you're looking for a great place to have a wonderful night or day out, then this is it. I highly recommend it.

Blue Sea Fish & Chips Take Away has some of the freshest fish and the best chips and potato cakes…read morein that area, seriously!! I've been going there since 2007 and started eating the souvlakis first, now I've moved onto the fish and absolutely love their flathead! The chips and potato cakes are absolutely amazing. They are mouth watering!! The only down-side to the place is it is honestly only take away. If they had the room to sit down and eat it there, it would be awesome but unfortunately they don't. The one benefit is that if you're looking for a nice meal on a nice hot day to take down to the park, you can stop at IGA (right next door) and grab a bottle of wine and get some fish and chips and head across the road to the park! Definitely a great location!

There are certain things that are more pleasurable in the memory than they are in the experience…read more Camping, for example. Or childhood! Fish and Chips is such a thing: golden and fresh and steaming and crisp in the memory and in lived experience, a miserable pile of stuff dipped in old oil. The measure of a fish and chip shop, then, is the distance between ideal memory and reality. Here, it happens to be short. It's not spectacular. But when is a chippie? What it is is dependably tasty and reasonably priced and clean. It doesn't come up to the fish and chips ideal, but what does? Only memory. It's worth remembering Blue Sea, though.

I really liked this place. It is very big and open - and also busy even on a rainy Thursday night…read more It is obviously the place to go with a girlfriend as most tables seemed to be for two girls having big catch ups. I was no exception! So a nice wine list - I had a lovely Pinot Gris and there was a good cocktail list. Food wise we started with their sharing plate which was delicious. The guacamole was outstanding. I am very picky on the guacamole front so this is big coming from me! Then we had the salad without any protein which was also delicious - black beans, quinoa, roasted corn and lots more guacamole. And then the chicken quesadillas which were a bit of a sensation. A lot of quesadillas are light on the filling - these guys were heavy on it and that paid off. Delicious, fast friendly service and a reasonable bill - I highly recommend!

I've long been a fan of the Fonda restaurants and from their humbled cramped-space days in Richmond…read morethey have since gotten big, bright, fun new spots like Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn. Fonda is easy casual dining, perfect for groups and catch ups when you want something tasty without spending a fortune. No it's not authentic Mexican, but few places in Melbourne are! This is their modern take and all of it's pretty damn good and a million times better than a certain Tex-Mex chain that plagued Melbourne with popularity in the 90s. No sloppy beans and rice dishes here. Just fresh-tasting tacos, burritos, quesadillas and salads. The menu changes up every so often, but my current favs are the pork quesadillas and beef burrito. They salads are really decent for a lunch option too - yummy and filling. The atmosphere is mostly couples and young groups, but we did have a 4 year old in our dining party on last visit and they took good care of her. The staff were really accommodating and also offered a plain chicken-and-cheese quesadilla to avoid any tears over spicy food. I wouldn't suggest coming here with a whole hoard of children, but for the most part it's both adult and family friendly. All orders are taken at the counter, be it take away or dine-in. Getting a seat can be a little tricky in peak times as it's a walk-in restaurant unless you're booking for a large group. But the style of ordering makes it fairly fast turn over. They'd probably make a lot more money on booze if they did table service, but I guess it moves people through faster too. I find the cocktails a bit pricy, but the aqua frescas are larger, delicious, and can have booze added to them if you so desire. All in all a great easy spot to catch up with friends without any fuss. Good for: groups, casual dining, older kids, burrito cravings.
