I started going to BT class at Fivex3 almost 3 years ago. Since then, there have been 2 or 3 times where I considered moving home (PA) for family, or to another city for a work. I can honestly say that each time I heavily considered whether I would find a gym with equally great coaches and gym folk, like those I found at Fivex3. I tried other local gyms like MAC and Merritt, and while they offer plenty of classes, they don't offer routine which, for me, is crucial to staying healthy and more importantly happy. When my routine is no longer working for me, or my schedule changes, there's plenty of support at Fivex3 to help me make beneficial adjustments. Having a routine is one thing, but sometimes I need an extra push. Emily and Diego are great about holding me accountable to my routine in a constructive way. Because we all have those days, or nights after work when we want to skip a workout for whatever reason (laziness or social reasons). And sometimes I do, but I skip workouts a lot less when I have a planned workout and coaches who care about how I'm squatting, or benching, or simply just training basic movements. I've learned a lot about my body since I started training with Fivex3, which was and still is humbling for me because I thought I knew all there was to know about training and my body after swimming competitively for 15 years. Throughout high school, I regularly trained 18-25 hours/week both in the water and in the weight room, so learning how to squat and bench properly with Emily and Diego was, in a way, life changing. Now, instead of training ~20 hours/week, I train ~5 hours/week (no more swimming), and I am without a doubt stronger and healthier. I've been training with Emily and Diego for over 2 years, and it's been a great experience. I'd taught myself to lift over the years like everyone else, hanging around the gym and reading the magazines. It wasn't until I started training at 5x3 that I realized that most of what I was doing was not getting me anywhere, and I've since made great progress in my time with them. I couldn't squat at all due to knee pain after doing it incorrectly for years. I learned that squats weren't hurting my knees, but what I was doing was hurting my knees. I can now squat pain free, and all my lifts are going up. I'm in my 60s now, and am stronger than I've been since my 20s. I came in about a year and a half ago after taking high-intensity interval and Pilates classes for two years, then hitting a wall in terms of fitness progress. I'd learned the basics of deadlifting from a friend some time ago, then tried to work with the aid of a weightlifting book while at another local gym. After walking by Five X3 so many times on the way to said gym, I finally decided to email Emily asking for more information when it became apparent I needed more help than the book could give me. It's hard to overstate what this place has done for me. I have never considered myself an athlete or a fan of the gym. Five X3 has shown me what a "gym family" is, and it has redefined so much of what strength and fitness mean to me. I'm kind of a Five X3 evangelist--but in a good way, I swear. Emily, the owner, takes the time to know your needs, understand the limits and strengths of your body, and to encourage you to go well beyond any goals that you may have set for yourself. I'm a lifelong runner and had always been afraid of lifting weights. I had my 2-, 3- and 5- pound weights at home and was proud of my little 10 pound kettleball. I had been a member at the MAC since 2008, running daily and lifting my tiny weights here and there. Ma boo started the starting strength program and joined this gym earlier this year. I finally joined in August and have not regretted it at all. You have to go through ten sessions with a personal coach, but they are fun and teach you how to not hurt, but push yourself. I can't believe I can deadlift more than my own weight and squatting is really fun. Emily, Diego, and Jay are all phenomenal and I don't regret joining, one bit! I found Fivex3 Training by passing it daily on my way to work in the morning. At that time, I quit Merritt Gym membership because I just was not motivated to step foot in the gym anymore and was looking for something new and motivating. I play in multiple sports leagues (soccer, field hockey, etc.) and was looking for strength training to supplement my cardio. Besides dabbling in weight training back in high school with my sports teams and the occasional use of 5-10 lb. free weights, I didn't know where to begin with my strength routine. I was looking for an intro to the Starting Strength lifting program and don't live near any SS gyms, so I contacted Fivex3 when a work trip was going to take me through Baltimore. They set up a 2 hour intro for me and gave me a great walkthrough of the 4 main lifts. They're a little hard to find, tucked away on the second floor of an industrial style building, but had nice equipment and everything we needed (they're also apparently moving to a new facility this summer). Christian, the intern, was fantastic, and Diego, one of the co-owners, backed him up as we started working on my form and building up to my appropriate working weights. For most of my life I have never been what most people would consider athletic. I was always one of the last people picked for teams in gym class, and all of my gym teachers considered me a lost cause. I have always had a strained relationship with exercise, and never genuinely enjoyed it. In the beginning of May I decided I wanted to turn over a new leaf and begin strength training. Strength training had always appealed to me for some reason, and I decided to give it a shot. After some research, I realized it wasn't something I should do on my own. I would need a professional to teach me proper form. I searched the internet for "Baltimore strength training gym" and that is how I found Fivex3. This was on a Thursday, and it turned out they were having a free workshop for the public on Sunday. I emailed Emily (the owner) right away, and fortunately there were still spaces available. I had an amazing time at the workshop, which led to my decision to join Fivex3. Joining Fivex3 has been life changing for me. I was not in shape AT ALL when I started out, and definitely struggled. I have been taking the Basic Training classes and the progress I have made in a few short months has been incredible. Emily is absolutely wonderful. As Lauren C. mentioned, Emily's ability to multi-task is beyond impressive. The classes are in a small group format, and all of us get the individual attention that we'd have with a personal trainer. Proper form and safety are highly valued at Fivex3, and Emily always makes sure we are performing the exercises correctly. She is extremely patient and will explain an exercise or movement until you get it right. The programming that Emily uses in her classes is carefully planned and effective. The workouts are engaging and challenging for individuals at all fitness levels. Emily's positive attitude and thoughtfulness are encouraging, but most importantly she truly believes in us. That in itself gives us the motivation and the confidence to push ourselves. I leave each workout feeling strong and standing taller. It's taken almost 30 years, but finally I have a coach who sees me not as a "lost cause" but as someone who is strong and capable. My relationship with exercise is no longer strained, and I genuinely look forward to and get excited for every class at Fivex3. My wife and I started taking training classes from Emily since June 2009 about two years before she started Fivex3. Emily's program is self-paced and highly effective. Individual student can choose the speed and weight which best suits his/her physical condition without competition. In addition, all exercises and movements are very well organized and designed to make you stronger and feel better. We could choose a gym which is only 5 minutes away and has all fancy equipment, swimming pools, and sauna. Instead, we choose Fivex3. We would drive 30 minutes from Columbia to Baltimore twice a weeks for a 60 minutes session. The trouble of commute during rush hour is compensated by the effectiveness of the class. We figure we'll never get the same level of workout in a fancy gym by our own. Effectiveness and motivation are what Emily can offer. And, that's the reason why we follow Emily for almost five years. I used to have severe knee pain especially during cold wet weather. Now, the pain is totally gone because the surrounding muscle is stronger so the joint carries less load. Our endurance, strength and flexibility are all significantly improved. Our lifestyle is much more active than ever. We are much healthier and happier than used to be. My wife and I are closing to 60 now but we feel strong and energized. I strongly recommend Fivex3 to everyone especially seniors who want regain your power of youth. I just do not post Yelp reviews because I am a waitress and I hear enough negative reviews from bar guests on a weekly basis to last me a lifetime, so I honestly don't care what anyone else in the world thinks about restaurants. I am also sick of social media outlets and I choose to minimize my interactions on the internet. With both of those points aside, I do choose to offer my review of Five x 3 because you SHOULD be training here. Being here will make you stronger, not only in lifts, but in life. I work at a corporate gym in the area, I receive a free gym membership with them for being their employee and I still choose to train with Emily and Diego because that is how good they are. You won't find a smarmy sales team here who are trying to sell you a gym membership. You will find two people who truly care about helping you become a stronger and a healthier YOU. The only supplements you will find for sale are the coffees that are served next door at Teavolve (which I will review, Yelp, so that you know I am a real person.) I have never belonged to such a friendly and supportive fitness community and I encourage you to step out of what you may to be perceive as your current comfort zone. I guarantee you will never be made to feel more comfortable at a gym. It isn't a mistake that this place keeps getting 5-star reviews. It really is that good. There is only one word to describe Five X3 training: WOW! I was in for a treat when I visited this gym. The place was very clean, and the staff was polite and professional. No d-baggery here whatsoever. I signed up for a two hour coaching session with Jay to fine tune my barbell lifts and left quite pleased. Jay coached me without condemnation or frustration. All coaches (even the interns) were very knowledgeable about the human body and had explanations to why the lifts were done a certain way besides the typical "just do it this way" that most health club bro-trainers resort to. If you are looking to get old school 70's big, looking to just slim down, or just want to get stronger to win over that new girl/guy at work (like the pipe-swinging, red-meat eating individual you desire to be), this is your place, and the starting strength method is the way to go. I started going to Fivex3 about 5 months ago, and I can say I don't see any end in sight. I was looking for something that would keep me motivated and keep me coming back. I found it and then some. I started with the basic training class and then I went to a FREE (free!) workshop that Emily gave on barbell lifts. Since then, I've been going to the strength classes and steadily building strength and form with my barbell lifts with the help of Emily and Diego. They are very helpful, and as all the other reviews have said, going to one of the classes at Fivex3 is like getting a personal trainer without the cost of a personal trainer. I come home from the classes feeling strong and proud....and with a better looking butt. Win. Win. And if that wasn't great enough, I will say I also really like that Emily keeps me engaged by posting links to great content on the subjects of strength and nutrition on her facebook page. RUN don't walk to Five x3 training! I stumbled upon this wonderful facility during one of my walks downtown. I saw the sign, wondered what the heck it meant and immediately went online went I got back home. Since moving to the city from the 'burbs, I was unable to find the type of facility that I loved where I used to live. I had already been to two big gyms and was still searching. I made an appointment to see the facility and the rest is history. Emily, the owner, is no nonsense. She coaches, instructs, watches every move with a keen eye and keeps everyone on track. You cannot progress to the next level until she is satisfied that you are performing each exercise with the necessary precision to achieve the benefits. And she is PATIENT. She will show you countless times how to perform a movement until you have it. I have lifted, pushed and pulled weights I never thought I would even be able to pick up. She has taught me an awareness about my body, how it moves and what it is capable of doing. Everyone gets this same personal attention. How she is able to keep an eye on everyone is amazing. She takes multi-tasking to a new level. Not only are the classes small but EVERY client is personable, motivated and fun to be with. This is not only a gym but it is a community. I credit that atmosphere to Emily who sets the tone and provides compassion, encouragement and understanding to all of us. Emily is not only my trainer but has become a good friend and has saved me a lot of money on therapy! Emily is also very knowledgeable about nutrition, which is a great asset to all of us. A gym, not a "health club". If you're looking for a place to wear your new exercise gear, work up a light-to-moderate sweat on an elliptical, and then flirt with the cute girl/guy at the in-house smoothie bar, this is not the place for you. On the other hand, if you're looking to change your life by making your body stronger, faster, and healthier through hard work - look no further. There are classes for all fitness levels, from bodyweight exercises to advanced barbell lifts. At each step of the way, Emily (the owner) will coach you on exactly what you need to focus on in order to reach the next level. They will customize programs to match your strengths (and challenge your weaknesses as well). I've worked out at several gyms and crossfit "boxes" in the past, and the only thing to even approach this level of coaching was personal training (which was waaay more expensive). It's a great atmosphere, and a completely customer-centric pricing model - no membership fee, no pressure to pay monthly, etc - it's like they actually believe in their product ;-) read more

I moved to baltimore this year and joined the MAC in harbor east. Not totally happy with the Mac I looked elsewhere. Am so thrilled to have found fivex3. The gym has a great warehouse feel, you can tell it was created with love. I take basic training classes with Emily. The classes are intimate and allow each person to get plenty of attention and retro fit exercises for individual needs. I am not the most athletic person and truly appreciate the attention and making sure my form is always perfect, etc. I am inspired every class to try harder and try things I didn't think were possible. Here's the scenario, you join that gym that everyone one's talking about. You think 'this is going to be great'. But then you walk in, you don't know what to do and to get any training, you have to sign up for additional ($$$) personal training or get in line an hour before a class because it fills up so fast. So you go a couple of times and get discouraged and stop going. STOP THE MADNESS, just come to Five x3 Training. They have small classes so they can focus on form, on strength building, on confidence building.Emily is super friendly and welcoming. You form friendships , have camaraderie with other members. I randomly met Emily, the owner, on a organized walk in 2011. She told me she was opening a gym in a few months so I kept in touch. I was one of the first clients to sign up and I have been there every since. I have never felt so strong as I do now. Since I am quite petite and not young, this is a big accomplishment for me. I had been looking for a non-franchised, personal gym without the preening and dating atmosphere. A buff neighbor with a great physical presence recommended FiveX3 to me. It has been superior to any other gym experience I've had. First, classes are small. Second, the owner (Emily) spares no opportunity to improve my form, which is so critical to productive exercise. Rather than going from one boring machine to another---there are no machines in this gym/warehouse---I am directed through a functional, vigorous, lively program to build strength. My body has never felt healthier and it steadily grows leaner. Also, my strength, agility and balance are remarkably improved. This is a no-frills, no-nonsense training center. I push, pull, lift, squat, stretch. Now I understand how strength energizes life. I began strength training using the Starting Strength method with a friend in early 2016. Since that time, I gained a serious amount of strength and lean body mass using barbell training on my own. Unfortunately, I had also ingrained some seriously bad habits/ form issues with my squat, and had hit a hard plateau which I wasn't sure how to fix. Enter Five X 3 training. I sought out Starting Strength coaching because to hold a credential as a Starting Strength Coach (SSC) means that not only have they completed a practical exam of coaching lifters and fixing form in real time on the platform, they have also completed a lengthy written exam which ensures they have a deep knowledge of the physics and biomechanics that make up the core lifts. In short, the folks at Five X 3 are some of the most knowledgeable coaches in the business, and given their generous pricing, certainly the best I can afford! I signed up for an hour training session, which we dedicated completely to fixing my broken down squat. I worked with Christian, who is interning at the gym working towards his SSC cert. He is an excellent coach; patient, friendly, and clearly communicative with cues to help fix my form. He worked hard to make sure I was digesting the information, and ingraining the right movement patterns as we worked through many sets of light squats. Also keeping watch over the proceedings was Owner/ Head Coach Emily, who assisted with coaching and cuing at times to help keep me on track. By the end of the session, my form issues were clearly defined to me, and I have been working since on a linear progression to perfect these issues and get my squat up to new personal records. Other than the excellent coaching I received, I have to comment on the atmosphere of the gym. I worked out around 6:15 PM, which is typically a really busy time at gyms. There were plenty of people working out at this time, but there was plenty of space for all to lift, and plenty of barbells, racks, and plates. There was definitely a sense of camaraderie here, with gym-goers encouraging each other, helping with spots, and cheering each other on as they did their 'fives.' Everyone was friendly, and a few even cheered me on a little as I hit what must've been my thousandth squat of the night. If I still lived close to Baltimore, this would be my gym. As it stands, I will happily drive an hour each way to get up there and get coaching from the best gym and coaches in our area. Lastly, it was refreshing to hear some good old punk rock in the gym rather than the dance pop they play at the YMCA. I swear that top 40 and the saccharine dance stuff makes you weaker. A true warehouse gym that is all business. I have always functioned much better in class settings when it comes to working out, and Emily has been fantastic from Day 1. From her evaluation of my strengths and weaknesses (pretty much everything), to putting me in the right classes, and monitoring what I doing and how often, this gym has been nothing short of exceptional. I needed some strength work, as well as conditioning, and the classes that Emily conducts have been spot on. You can adjust your reps and weight to what you are capable of, and maxing out is perfectly acceptable provided your form is correct. Having suffered my share of injuries during my other activities, Five X3 has helped me through all phases of rehab as well. They have all manner of classes (strength, basic training, conditioning, flexibility, and occasional guest instructor/specialty classes) so you can get in whatever work you need, or think you need, pretty much any day of the week. I have friends who will squat 335lbs who are members, along with others who would rather work on conditioning with light weights. The gym was recommended to me by a friend, and in the time I have been here no less than 4 other friends have joined and continue to re-up because of the results. My squat is now acceptable, and my bench, deadlift, pullups, and shoulder presses have increased during my time here. I am 100% satisfied with the results I have gotten here, and as long as I reside in the downtown area I will continue to use this gym. read more

I started going to Five X3 Training two or three months ago. A good friend of mine had recommended it (several times), and I thought I would give it a try to supplement my running/yoga schedule. I tend to be on the scrawny side, and had always found weight lifting and strength training intimidating. Five X3 couldn't be more welcoming! Emily and Diego made me feel comfortable from day one, and really focus on good form and helping me with my specific needs. As someone who had never really lifted before, this was key. It's amazing how quickly I have seen improvements, not just in how look, but also how I feel. I happen to be getting married in just a couple of weeks, and am thrilled to have such a strong, toned body for the wedding. I'd recommend Five X3 to anyone!
