Of all the Merritt locations, this one is probably my least favorite. It's a bit surprising too since this seems like it should be their "crown jewel". The first time I came here, the ceiling in the women's locker room was leaking all over the floor. It looked like someone tried to mitigate the problem with towels and buckets but the water was still all over the place and was giving off a horrible stench. It later dawned on me that the women's locker room is right below the women's bathrooms on the rooftop deck... gross. I also tried finding an ankle strap during one of my workouts here and the only one available had velcro that was completely worn out. I asked the front desk if they had a replacement but there wasn't one. It seemed odd to me that a gym which charges such high membership rates didn't have such a basic piece of equipment. The layout of this gym is also just a bit weird. You have the terf area super far away from the lifting area and two different areas for cardio, one upstairs and another downstairs. Some of the machines like the abductor is all the way upstairs whereas hamstring curl machines are all the way downstairs. You'd think these belong near each other? They also only have one leg curl machine and one standing calf raise machine. The pool is obviously the main draw but, honestly? The way that it's positioned actually makes it so it's under a shadow the majority of the day. This club also allows children and usually plays loud music so it's not the most relaxing place to hang. Not to mention, there's no guests allowed unless they pay a $50 fee - even on slow weekdays. I learned this after a not-so-friendly pool attendant turned us away at the door. I truly didn't know the fee applied on weekdays (I was told something different by other Merritt staff members), but was met with a patronizing attitude by this particular staff member when I expressed my confusion. If you live nearby, I understand the draw and the convenience. But I probably won't be coming back anytime soon. The folks at the Fed Hill location are much nicer anyways. read more

If you're caught in the middle of all the negative reviews and positive reviews, hopefully my review will temper and guide your decision. This gym is pricy - there's no doubt about it. There's a steep membership fee and monthly cost to utilize this facility. If you're like me, wait for their specials that are usually offered around holidays or New Years to avoid/lower the joining fee. If you're under 25, even better - you can receive a discounted monthly rate. In my case, I didn't pay the membership joining fee (New Years special) and received a discounted monthly rate as I was under 25. If you're older than 25, there are not any discounts that I know of besides faculty affiliation with Hopkins or any partnering organizations. It's important that you understand how much you're paying and what you feel is worth that price. Now for what this gym costs and if it's worth your money - that's on you to make the most of this facility and services they offer. This facility offers many amenities that it can be overwhelming to take in during the a trial run or guest pass visit. If you're into weight/strength training, Merritt Clubs Canton has all the free weights and machines you will ever need to develop all parts of your body. You'll never have to worry about waiting for a bench press to open up and even less so for squat racks (there's an insane amount of them to be honest). If you like deadlifting, they do provide bumper plates and a platform made for those impacts (clean and jerks included). There are also dumbbell sets weighing up to 120lbs and barbell variations for all workout needs. Now for the machines, the gym has everything you can think of. They're all well-maintained by the staff and very rarely do any of them go out of commission (except for that one good leg press machine) as the staff fixes or replaces them swiftly. My only gripe is that there is only one seated chest fly/rear delt fly machine but that's just me being grumpy. If you're into powerlifting, this place may not be for you. They do have time limits on certain stations and do not allow videotaping/recording in the free weights section if you wanted look at your form. In general, this gym's vibe is mostly geared towards bodybuilding. If you're into taking classes and/or lessons, Merritt Club's classes are included in the membership price and ranges from cycling, strength/endurance building, yoga, and more. They have a handful of reputable instructors that come in and teach periodically to keep your workouts interesting. You do have to register for these in advance as these are popular and have spot limitations. They run throughout the day but I find the morning classes interesting as you can hear them all the way from the locker room going crazy. If you're into cardio, this is the place for you. As all gyms do, they have a generous fleet of treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes. Not only this, they have an indoor swimming pool all-year round and an outdoor pool during the warmer seasons. If you're into basketball or pickleball(?), you're in luck as they do have a court that alternates between those two sports. Though people mainly play pick-up games, sometimes Merritt Clubs organizes workshops and tournaments for these sports. I do wish they converted the front outdoor space into some other type of court for other sports like tennis/volleyball/dodgeball. Besides the workout experience at Merritt Clubs Canton, I found the other amenities to be worthwhile. Though there is plenty of outdoor parking, I make use of the member-only indoor parking structure that connects seamlessly to the gym (accessible both by stairs and elevator). Especially during the cold and hot months, I appreciate not having to bare through the weather just to head into the gym. Another amenity I do find notable is the availability of towels. They offer face and shower towels that are clean and ready to use for your duration at the gym. In terms of overall gym cleanliness, I never found locker rooms, shower rooms, or the workout areas to be of unremarkable hygiene. I cannot say the same for certain other members of the gym though, I digress. After 246 daily visits in 2023, I can personally say that Merritt Clubs Canton was worth my time and money. I came in during the 2023 New Years out of shape and entered 2024 feeling comfortable, confident, and strong in my own body. Yes, you could technically get the same fitness results at another cheaper commercial gym, but Merritt Clubs has the system in place to support you as well as give you all the tools and equipment to succeed and achieve your goals. However, it's ultimately up to you to make the most out of this gym - if you don't show up and do the work then perhaps hold off on joining to save your money. But if you're ready to change up your lifestyle for the better and healthier, I'd go with Merritt Clubs. Cheers. read more

Preface: I signed up for the 3 day free trial (on a Saturday) and was with full intention planning on signing up for the same household MTM (month to month) membership with my partner by the third day. I informed the associate that I was just waiting for my partner to visit the gym before committing, and told them I would know for sure by the third day (Monday). To my surprise, the rate that was discussed was promotional and happened to end the day (Monday) I came back. That information was not emphasized during my first meeting, so I was blind sided when I was told the typical price of MTM on same household memberships. After speaking with the GM, I was told there was absolutely no way to honor the price discussed as the promotional offer abruptly ended, even to their surprise. My personal gripe is that I have worked at Equinox (a high end gym in Ca) and even at that gym we have been able to honor prices discussed beforehand, regardless of external circumstances. Thus, it's hard for me to believe that the GM really couldn't do anything to honor that, especially because I really was going to sign up that day. I had my documents to prove same household and everything!! My gym experience for the 3 days: The building and equipment are in generally good condition with plenty of cardio machines. There are also duplicates of all the weight machines, but given how busy it gets during rush hour and the size of the building, I would expect even more to offset the "busy-ness" of the gym. The front desk people were friendly. The locker rooms/ showers are also kept relatively clean (keep in mind I only saw three days of this). The sauna is tiny and fits about 5-6 people (cramped). No steam room. The towel service is nice. They offer sweat towels and shower towels. They have a rooftop pool but it was closed when I went, so no comment. The indoor pool is nice and warmed. Lots of group classes that I didn't have a chance to partake in, so no comment Overall: It's a good gym even if I personally find it overpriced. There are cheaper alternatives with the same amount of equipment and amenities. These gyms are just a further drive and have more dedicated gym folks which can create a not-welcoming environment. I think if you leave near the area and have the means, it's worth it for solely for convenience. I joined Merritt a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. I'm a big fan of the workout classes. I've taken several cycling classes, Barre, yoga, and pump. As an ex ballerina the barre class was a bit intense (but I also haven't worked out all pandemic! ). It has been raining a lot since I've joined so I haven't been to the outdoor pool but my roomate loves it. She would always go after her workouts when the weather is nice. The Federal Hill location is the worst. It is by far the most overpriced gym in the area. A Planet Fitness is twice the size. The equipment is very old, it is crowded all of the time. They charge you like it is a 5 star gym. There hours are also poor they close too early on the weekends. The only positive is that the staff is very nice and other Merritt locations such as Towson, Middle River and Eldersburg are more worth the price. Those locations are larger, cheaper and have much more equipment. Paying $99 a month for the Federal Hill location is a complete scam. read more

So I tried to cancel my contact at this gym. I was told it was going to cost an arm and a leg to cancel and I was kind of surprised to find that out because the information I was given when I signed up was different. I talked to the GM of the gym and he told me that he didn't believe me because he trust the integrity of his people, which is great. Sooo I asked for a copy of my agreement today so that I could make sure it matched what I had AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW!?!?! The contract was changed and my signature was forged!!!! It's says the contract was rewritten and I never came back to re-sign anything. Also my initial payment has disappeared from the contract and I wonder where that went!!!! This is CONTRACT FRUAD!!!! Down payment is different, start date is different, signatures are forged and the term of the membership is different. Ok in response to your response, I AT NO TIME REQUESTED A SECOND CONTRACT. let's not sweep this under the rug. My initials and signature was forged and yes money was collected when I did the first contract. And obviously I was let out of the contract because fraud was committed. The GM is an absolute joke! I was sent a copy of the contract and didn't think to look at it because why would anything have changed? Months later I take a look and there it is the forged signatures and initials. It's my fault I didn't catch it sooner but that's what I get for trusting that everything was done with integrity. Other than blaring music from adjoining studios during yoga classes, we have found the facilities to be good and clean. Never had to wait for equipment and signing in for group classes has gone well. You just don't get things they advertise/promise during sales pitch Example: The website talks about getting free training sessions and welcome tours/evaluations after you join...we have been members for 2 months and have not been contacted by anyone. They were going to increase it again right before the pandemic but took it back. NOW they're trying to tell me I received a discounted under 25 rate? I'm 29 years old, joined after I was 25... they are out of their minds. This is a great gym, I've been a member for 3 years. Merritt has tons of squat racks and barbell lifting setups. The barbells, plates, and benches are pretty good quality. They also have studios for yoga, cycling, etc. Lots of stairmasters and treadmills and a great indoor turf area. The rooftop pool does get busy but if you know when to go its very nice, especially with the full bar. I like the points reward system to redeem a cold Gatorade here and there. The location is very walkable if you live nearby. My only negative feedback is I wish the safety clips for the barbells were a little nicer but that's really nitpicking. read more

By far the best gym I've ever been to. I moved to Baltimore about two months ago and instantly got a membership at the Merritt in Canton. The membership is on the pricier side, but it is easy to see why and is worth every penny. They offer an extensive amount of classes including Spin, Barre, yoga, body combat classes and many more, with excellent instructors who thoroughly show you the movements and offer additional instruction when needed. The classes typically range from 30 min to an hour and will kick your butt. The gym itself is also huge with all the cardio and weight lifting machines you would ever need. The rooftop pool is just another reason to join the gym, featuring a bar, and two pools. And many lounge chairs to soak up the sun on. They even do the occasional event for their members, like their luau I attended a couple weeks ago featuring hula dancers. You also get access to their other gym locations, which I take advantage of when I'm in the Federal hill/Locust point area. It's not as big, but is still a great side and has an outdoor pool. This location is adults only though unlike the Canton one. Have recommended this gym to many of my friends and encourage anyone who is considering it to just join! read more

My husband and I both belong to Merritt Clubs in Canton (we pay $178 a month for a couple membership). We picked this particular club because it's close to our work and it offers free parking as well as a wide variety of equipment. It all started June 15, 2019 when we both went to Merritt Canton to work out. My husband's locker room was broken into, but the lock was intact. The thief walked away with his credit cards and his drivers license! We filed a police report and visited Target and Harris Teeter where the cards were used, and used! We documented everything and handed it over to the police. The General Manger from Merritt was contacted and we thought we would be taken seriously, instead we got brushed off with a "oh well, the important thing is, you have a better lock now!" or when I voiced my concern that there was a predator at their location, praying on their members and that our address was now exposed to this criminal who could easily target our home, our child, he told us that we were "worried about to many ifs!" We were not happy, felt unheard and knew that we would need to up the security in our house. We got mega locks for the locker room at Merritt's and left our wallets at work. We were trying to move on and let this go, until... Saturday, July 27th we went to Merritt Canton. We both scanned our tags while one of the front desk clerks held the scanner in her hands and confirmed our identity by looking at the computer. My husband got finished ahead and was waiting for me in the car. While I got in the car, the phone buzzed and a member who knows us was on the other end, telling us about the appalling behavior he witnessed after I walked out. He said he overheard the three (3) women at the front desk hound another Merritt employee for my name. Why, because they wanted to pull up my account. The commotion went on and they were all so submerged in this that they did not see who was hearing it or watching them. The reason for this odd request was, so that they could find out my husband's name (and info). Yes, I have a handsome husband, but what kind of unprofessional behavior is this? They knew that he was married and that I was his wife, because during the heated conversation, "we want to see her husband" clearly was overheard. The shift manager even tried to bully the 4th employee with "I am your manager and I am demanding you to tell me her name!" What kind of establishment is this? Do you want to bring your spouse there to be hit on, worst yet, have his and your privacy invaded by titillated unprofessional women? How much information have these female employees have accessed, what will they do with it? Caveat emptor! P.S: Other than that, gym part of this business is great when you avoid the peak hours. During the rush hours, you will have hard time finding available machines. Update August 5,2019 Spoke with the COO of Merritt and I was told that they have dealt with the employees and our privacy breach issue internally. For $119 a month you would figure the pool staff wouldn't try to run you out of the building every night at 8:00 pm. However, they turn the music and the jets off 15-30 minutes early so you "get the hint" and make several announcements. They make it seem like they are doing you a favor by being there. My first time being a member of a nice gym! I love the indoor pool and the roof top pool and hot tub! It's a very large gym that I could spend hours in there without being bored. It has many equipments/machines that fit everyone. The front desk staff is always nice and helpful. One of the personal trainers there was very kind, he happened to see me squatting while exercising nearby and he came over to show me what I was doing was not correct. Thank you! The gym tries to be clean but sometimes the patrons are so not clean/neat. Some of them can't even put away their own dirty towels even though the towel bin is within arm reach! There should be a class on how to be classy before signing up for that gym membership!! One lady who was in the pool on the rooftop has such ashy thighs/behind that made me wonder when was her last shower?! Did she ever scrub that part of her body? I am not a Baltimore native so I don't know what classifies a facility as an "athletic club" and allows them to charge you 100$/a month in this area, but this should not set the bar. As I write this review from what I can only assume is 1 of 3 functional stand up/spin bikes in this gym, I see that I have been here for roughly 40 min and am only 24 min into my actual work out. How was the rest of my time spent you ask? I went through 3 spin bikes, 2 made horrible noise once you tried to add gear (someone actually got off the treadmill behind me and moved to one farther away from ear shot) while the 3rd did not have the option to adjust handle bar height because it was literally jammed into one position. As I walked around to survey the rest of the place to find a different piece of cardio equipment I noticed that a majority of the machines around me made some sort of tragic "fix me fix me" maintenance cry for help. After a while I settled on a treadmill for some light jogging which didn't last long because my shoulder injury quickly flared up in "wtf are you doing you idiot" kind of way. Back to the drawing board. I made my way to one of the stand up bikes that had moving handle bars. Looks cool. Too bad unlike its occupied counter part, this one was dead. At this point is literally where I committed the felony of gym etiquette and actually POACHED one of 2 lifefitness (read one notch better than the rest of the reject 25 year old equipment here) stand up bikes. I stood in my puddle of shame (not sweat) and pretended to browse Facebook while standing a comfortable 2 feet away from the dude that was on this bike and telepathically willed him to wrap it up. This is not ok. However, I will have to say there are definitely upsides to this facility. -open 24 hours a day? Not a thing in Boston. -friendly and courteous front desk staff. -ample trx set up. LOVE. -BURN area--not sure if this is like my treadmill headset class at home, but YEAY! -large looking group fitness studios. -pool -spa area--definitely manicures, maybe massage? -lots of space. I was there on a Wednesday morning between 630 and 830 am and at no point did it feel crowded. I should note that there was no spin class while I was there which I find really surprising. I'd assume these were peak hours on a weekday. All in all, I work at (part time) and, therefore, workout at what is considered a luxury athletic facility w the regular membership being $100/month and at no point do we have more than one piece of cardio equipment out of order because otherwise our members would literally go for the jugular. I've been a member since 2018 and the club has only gotten better since. They have update the gym and created more space. The classes are AMAZING! I love the instructors and the schedule. The price is unbeatable for all the classes you can go to (Les Mills classes, yoga, cycle, HIIT) you want they have a class for it! Great place for a workout and for kids. The new renovations provide more open workout spaces. The locker rooms are a bit small at the moment, but hopefully it will continue to open up as the renovations finish. The group classes are great. They can also get packed during peak hours, so get there on time. The kids club is good. Lots for kids too do. The only downside is that the TV is almost always on, so your kid may just end up gravitating there the entire time. read more

Traveling a lot for work and having lived in several areas over the years such as Cincy, Detroit, Boston, Indy, and Pittsburgh; we have seen and belonged to many gyms over the years. Merritt stands out in Baltimore as the best by encompassing a big city high end gym with top equipment and premium facilities while also keeping that Baltimore neighborhood charm 'small-timore'. We met soo many good friends at this gym and so enjoyed all the Les Mills training classes esp cycling. The Canton facility does fill up at peak morning and post work hours but if you work out early like we do this is not an issue. The newer rooftop pool and bar offer scenic views of Baltimore's city skyline. read more

I went to Merritt to enquire about their membership. Pros- 1) The facility is huge and almost never ending. 2) Intermittently they run offers such as waiving off their one time joining fee. 3) Equipments are sophisticated and new. 4) Their monthly membership fees is in par with other private fitness centers in the area. 5) The staff is friendly and not at all pushy. Cons- 1) It is very crowded and therefore overwhelming. So many people, so many equipments and the noise makes the environment feel like a combat training zone. 2) There is just one indoor heated lap swimming pool. The rooftop pools are open from May-Sept. 3) Mandatory lock in period of 12 months, which means that you have to commit to pay for 12 months membership. If you cancel before that you will have to pay 50 percent of the fees of the remainder months. 4) Coaching fees are not included in the membership fees. For example- if you want to learn yoga or swimming, you will have to pay extra fees over and above your membership fees. So, beware of this one. 7) Since their membership fees include all types of fitness options, you do not have the option to pick and chose the ones that you are interested in. Which I think is such a waste of money. For example- I want to join their gym. I don't know to swim, yet I have to pay for using the pool as well. I wouldn't join here because it's over crowded and there is no pick and choose option. I ended up joining the Y Swim Center. read more

As I just recently went to add him I was told I needed to restart my contract. I called the Regional Director of Sales, Clark, to inform him. It was a useless call. I'm amazed at how wonderful the Merritt Canton Club is. The trainers are kind and helpful, the location is clean, and I love all that they have to offer. There are so many different classes offered at a ton of different times for convenience. There are always plenty of towels in the locker rooms. So I go here on a daily basis and felt the need to give some constructive criticism... this place is awesome- seriously. BUT.... if you can build a gazillion dollar expansion how can you not afford 2 new spin cycle seats??? Two of the spin machines- one on the first and the other on the second floor both have broken seats. Being a cyclist- I KNOW these are minor investments. This is the best gym if you enjoy waiting to use equipment! I go at 5:30AM during the week and usually wait 10-15 minutes to use treadmill. Some mornings I stop my lifting routine halfway through because I get so frustrated. While I've never gone in the afternoon, I've heard it's even worse. Forget Saturday's from 9AM - 4PM. I've waited 25-30 minutes for a treadmill. After responding to a survey, I was told to think about going at another time. Recently certain members were sent out notices of rate hikes. "If you would like to continue to have access to all nine locations including Canton and Fort Avenue, there is no need to do anything. Your dues will increase by $10 a month beginning April 1, 2019." So they are saying "if you want to continue using the gym you already use, pay $10 more." Such crap. My dues are currently $86/month and if I agree to the hike, its $96!!!!!!! I refuse. No way. $100 a month should get me so much more than listed below. Canton is a nice gym and maybe worth $10 more but Fort Avenue is not. They have the worst space for working out. Everything is cramped together and there's no room to stretch or do sit-ups. Plus equipment is always broken. In the summer the pool is so crowded its like Ocean City and no chairs are available. It's very loud and people get drunk. The locker rooms are sub-par especially compared to other Merritt gyms. You can't wash your hair since water dribbles out and if the toilet is flushed it stops all together. The sauna has been broken half the winter and since the locker room is so cold it make the shower a chore rather than relaxing. The men's locker room has had thefts to the extent they have to put mirrors everywhere. The women's locker room has had thefts as well. Don't leave anything in your locker. read more

Unhelpful front desk that even the manager would speak with an attitude when asked questions. Gym is always packed, you can easily tell equipment is rebought/used. The gym itself is great. The locker rooms are usually clean, and I don't usually have to wait for equipment. However, the customer service is horrible. After I initially joined, I emailed several times to try and get a copy of my contract but no response. I eventually just let it go. Since then, I've had several other customer service issues, where I eventually just gave up. Most recently, I decided that I wanted to take swimming lessons. I first stopped by the desk and they told me I had to email the aquatics director. I first emailed on June 23, 2019. Since then, I've sent several follow up emails and I have gotten no response almost a month later. It's frustrating because it is a nice gym. However, I don't know if it's worth the hassle. This gym is bullshit. They are on some next level scam, they go out of their way to make cancellation the most unnecessarily complicated process ever. I had recently moved and instead of being able to call in like 24 hour fitness or some other gyms, they require you to mail something in because apparently we live in 1912. I can't email, I can't fax. What the fuck? Stay away from this gym unless you are into snobby management and hawkish policies. I definitely wouldn't recommend this gym to anyone. I recommend this gym to anyone who is serious about fitness and who loves the camaraderie of great, friendly staff/trainers who are able to get to know the people at the gym individually. It is an experience I have never felt elsewhere, and I have had years of fitness memberships at other gyms. Merritt Canton is incomparable. I am happy I found it. Update on my review - which is mostly based on Merritt's customer service or lack thereof. Received a "rebuttal" to my first review/opinion of Merritt. I'm sorry they disagree with me but now I will further my review and really break it down for them... 1. "We disagree with you because an La Fitness or Golds does not have a outdoor pool with a cafe". True. Although I thought a gym was for working out... not lounging by the pool trying to pick up dudes/chicks? 2. Other gyms "do not offer free yoga or Barre classes with you membership". I didn't know we all did Yoga? I guess you should charge everyone for classes they don't take.. I see that as fair. 3. Other gyms "do not have basketball courts, squash courts, a spa or large kids club area". False. LA Fitness has a squash court and a large daycare club area and also, I might mention, that they have an indoor track - which is a huge highlight to me and a lot of others when running outside is difficult during the cold winter months. 4. Other gyms don't offer "free towels and none that we know of are open 24 hours" - ha. I absolutely come to Merritt for the towels, that's my sole reason for paying $70-$80 a month. Essentially - I understand that Merritt chooses to "pride ourselves in our ammentities that set us a part from our competition," but I don't find that their amenities are far superior than any other gym. And I will specifically say that when my roommate went to sign up for a membership, she asked if she could get the discount that I was given and they told her no, when she asked why... the response: "We really don't need memberships, so we don't offer discounts for everyone". Apparently folks are willing to spend so much money at this place, that the gym doesn't feel that they need memberships to continue operating... yet, I notice Merritt keeps raising their prices?
