That's a risk, given that the Mayo Clinic is the primary reason anyone is in Rochester, Minnesota. With all the ailments on display in the city, a visitor pushing that bookcase could drop dead on the spot, and the lawsuit would put Bitter and Pour out of business. I almost broke the damn thing pushing and pulling. Bitter and Pour has all top-shelf liquor, and their cocktail list sounds fascinating. The mixologists are well-trained. Our bartenders on a Wednesday afternoon in September were professional, but they lacked the warmth I encountered everywhere else in this city. Our drinks were great, though, and B & P must be the best cocktail lounge in Rochester. I wish they served some small bites, but that's not their thing.

We walked down the staircase and were greeted with a bookcase... gotta love a mystery door! Upon entering there's an intimate bar area with the perfect dimly lit room to indulge in an elevated cocktail. I had you had me at hello. Whiskey and cherry liquor paired lovely together and apricot, lemon plus being milkwashed delivered a perfect sweet but not overpowering clean, smooth drink. Searching the immediate area I see Rooster' Barn and Grill. The menu seems to have a lot of variety, sandwiches, wraps, appetizers, desserts and almost anything deep fried. We decided to check it out. It is very centered around a bar, with a sign, Nobody under 21 after 10 pm. There are pool tables, and there are large tables for groups. They definitely are open to family casual dining, though. We sat at a regular table near the bar, of course. The three of us ordered a wrap with sweet potato tots (very tasty), and Po' Boy (fried shrimp, coleslaw and cheese, with a spicy mayo on a hoagie bun) and onion rings, and a French dip sandwich with French fries. My wife drank raspberry tea, I had the house root beer and our son drank Dr Pepper. For dessert we split a piece of 3-layer carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and drizzled chocolate syrup. The chicken wrap was the club wrap and the sweet potato tots were a surprisingly good side. The raspberry ice tea was okay, but my wife said it tasted like it was fresh brewed tea that was getting near the end of it's "use by" time. (I have worked in professional kitchens, and if you use a fresh tea, we usually tossed it after a couple of hours). My Po'Boy was good and the onion rings were the best kind, battered and cooked to easily bite through them. The house root beer tasted a little weak to me. The French dip tasted good, and looked like a Philly that had the vegetables left off. My son's comment is, for a French dip he thought it would be different bread. And he did have to remind the server to bring the au just. The cake was good and we split it 3 ways. The agreement was, chocolate syrup is something that can be added to almost anything and it is good. With carrot cake, it seemed odd, and either could be omitted or, as my son who works in a similar restaurant in Omaha said, he would put caramel sauce over it. We went searching for variety, casual and budget friendly and they are at Rooster's.

There may be other influences but those 3 in general cover a lot of styles, each on their own! My person and I shared 2 appetizers. We had Crunchy Wontons with birria (slow roasted beef in a red broth that is then shredded - similar to an American pulled pork in consistency). They had a layer of creamy coleslaw slaw dressing and a layer of corn salsa between the meet and the wonton. Since these were open-faced wantons this was important to keep the balance of each each Wonton 's flavors just right. Oh! The red sauce the meat was in was Kung-Fi Sauce. It was very flavored so in that sense spicy and for me any more of whatever brought the heat might be too much, but this certainly was Master sauce. Steak Fries was the other appetizer. A play on words. French Fries ... extra long, well fried to hold up to the steak toppings and not at all oily. In addition to steak there was guacamole, and another sauce. Huh, I was so dazzled by the excellent steak I can't think of the other ingredients beyond guacamole.. I did end up using a fork to make sure that I got everything onboard the fries But they supplied the forks. I stayed at the Homewood Suites and ordered delivery through Grub Hub.
