This facility is no longer Sunrise. It is owned and poorly run by Chapters. When I first moved my…read morefather here, the facility and staff were wonderful. As soon as Chapters took over, staff fled in fear of losing nursing licenses. Current admin in charge has, along with executives who own the company, created an unsafe environment for residents by: Enacting inadequate care staff-resident ratios. Resident exposure to sickness from key care staff who were sick themselves but unable to take any time off to get well. This spread illness to residents and sent my dad to the ER. Eventual discharge to rehab (Avantara of Lake Zurich) so that I could hopefully get my father well enough to get him OUT of Chapters led to father's demise and death in weeks. IDPH complaints were filed by me for both locations and Chapters twice - once for my diabetic, wheelchair-bound dad not having a working call cord for almost 2 months, him falling out of bed/going to the ER; another after his death. Not maintaining the property, including LACK OF: supplies for care/food service staff, bill payment for trash removal, emergency call cord maintenance, proper outdoor lighting to the building, working call box/door bell, and more. Having no check in/out system in place for safety. People are allowed in the building as they please, by anyone who is able to open the front door, GLARING lack of concern and knowledge of the Chapters of Barrington CEO about her memory care patients/staff who serve them. She claims to have dementia care expertise, but spends the majority of her time tending to a side job - not looking out for the well-being of the residents/staff in Barrington. She has lost residents (40 people is down to 26) due to families pulling their loved ones or death, but she cannot manage to know resident names or needs - medical or socio-emotional. She, herself, sent my grieving sister and I a bill for our dad AFTER he had died. When questioned, we were told it needed to be looked asked, "Who is your dad?" This, after multiple pointed interactions with both this CEO AND Chapters corporate. I am not one for conflict, but i felt it imperative to advocate for my own dad, for the other residents, and for care staff that were trying their best, but had their hands tied by admin/corporate ignorance, corner-cutting, and excuse-making. NOT acceptable when the cost for this is $10K/month. I have had direct experience with 5 asst. living/rehab facilities. The lack of true care is REAL... and it's appalling when you have NO OTHER CHOICE but to entrust care of your loved one to someone else. Look elsewhere than Chapters of Barrington

My 88 year old mother has dementia and was in another memory care facility when it became apparent I needed to move her out of there ASAP...in the middle of the Covid pandemic. To say I was overwhelmed and nervous is an understatement. I checked out many different facilities and when I came upon Mary Seaberg (Director of Sales) at Sunrise of Barrington, I finally felt like I could exhale for the first time. Mary is so kind, patient and extremely informative. She took the time to really educate me which believe me, most facilities do NOT. She stressed to me the importance of communication there which was extremely important to me coming from a facility that had non-existent communication. It was also impressive to learn Sunrise of Barrington has had no positive cases of Covid since the start of the pandemic...no residents or staff. This was amazing to me coming from a facility that was on the news for their positive Covid cases. All things led me to make the decision to move my mom into Sunrise, and she has been thriving ever since! The care managers are wonderful...you can tell they really love the residents. The memory care director Robyn and nurse Jyoti are awesome and are the epitome of communication. I am given regular updates about my mom which is so crucial, especially so during these difficult times of the pandemic. They have an AWESOME activities coordinator Janelle who shares through an app all the latest projects, activities, etc. the residents are doing. You can feel the passion Janelle has for her job. It has been so great to see pictures of my mom participating! Rachel the receptionist always greets my calls (and believe me there have been MANY being new to Sunrise) with her warm, friendly and helpful manner. Kudos to Lynette the Executive Director for creating an environment where seniors are truly loved and appreciated and not considered a burden.

The administration is very open to discuss any questions, thoughts or issues you may have and they genuinly want to help. The caregivers all build wonderful relationships and trust with each resident. Activities are plentiful and while there are some residents with more progression of the disease than others, I feel the staff has special programs for each level. The outdoor gardens offer an easy outside retreat and the rooms and common areas are very clean and well taken care of. I ended up moving my mom here from another home where she was not not happy. I do wish that I moved her into Arden Courts first. It didn't take me long to realize that she is better off in a place that is ALL Dementia vs. a home that has other levels of care. Since her move to Arden Courts I have been able to feel a great sense of peace. Arden Courts is a very rare and special place with genuine love for their residents.

She was dropped off early and picked up after dinner, 18 full days. Kelly, the admissions person was nice and reviews were good so I had high hopes. I am my grandmothers POA and caretaker, so I know how she is. She is very easy to take care of compared to others. I visited her one time at about 2:30pm halfway through her stay- she was laying in bed in soaked diapers, dirty pajamas, her classes and hearing aid were gone. She smelled strong like she needed a shower, and this was only halfway through her respite. No excuse for her to be alone and uncared for in the middle of the day. When it came time to pick her up on her last day, the first thing my grandmother said to me was "PLEASE give me a shower, they haven't bathed me one time!" My grandmother does not like showers- so the fact that she asked me for one says A LOT. She would remember taking one at a new place if she did. Outside of this stay- she went to an adult day group that gives her showers. The first thing she tells me every shower day when I pick her up is- I got a shower. Arden courts tried to tell me that Diane did get showers- but she must of forgot because of dementia. Based off the way she smelled, as well as the HORRIBLE yeast infections she had (under her breast and other places) it was very clear they let her go 18 days without a shower. When I did my tour- I was told that they give 3+ showers a week. She should've been given OVER 6 not 0, that is what I paid for. Arden court lost my grandmothers hearing aid as well, and did nothing to make it right. We had to get a new one and she went weeks without it. A woman named Angie or Angelica works there- she was very rude when I told her my concerns. This woman told me Diane was given 2 showers during her stay, that is no where near enough for 18 days even if true. She ignored my calls and emails, when we did talk she was just not kind and seemed to laugh at me. Last we talked was months ago, she said she would call me back to let me know if they can pay for Diane's hearing aid replacement. I called multiple times and got told I need to wait for a call- which never came. Very unprofessional. When I dropped my grandmother off the first day- the nurse didn't even want to speak with me or take her medicine, she was very annoyed and I had to wait over an hour. Even then she was still confused why I was trying to leave, maybe because I'm paying you guys to take care of her so I can get a break! Very frustrating experience.

Caring.com put Harbor House in touch with me and from the moment I spoke with Savannah, the executive director, I knew this place was special. Savannah actually did the assessment at the big, fancy, expensive nursing home and confirmed what I already suspected. We moved her out of there and Savannah actually drove out there and helped me move her stuff and my mom (I was visiting mom out of town). Over the next few days, I got a very up-close look at Harbor House and how the staff interacts with their residents. I popped in at unexpected times and walked through the adjacent buildings. I never saw a deviation from the excellence of care I saw the first time - not even once. I never saw residents mistreated or spoken to condescendingly, like I did at the other place. The caregivers are amazing women. Sam, Becky, Brittany, are really hands on nurses. Sam spent tons of time with me, discussing my mother's medications. The doctors call you and I spoke with Dr. Ernst about my mom for an hour! I couldn't even get the doctor at the big, fancy place to return my call! The place is small and it's warm and cozy - like a previous commenter said, it's not like an institution at all. It's like a home. My mom has an adorable sunny, private room with her own bathroom. She's always got someone there to help her. All I can say about this place except is that it's exceptional. I have learned that big, fancy nursing homes are usually understaffed and can't manage the needs of their patients. This place CARES for their patients. I don't need crystal chandeliers and big lobbies. I need individualized care with people who treat the elderly like the human beings they are. Harbor House does this. The owner of this facility needs to be very proud of his staff and his philosophies. I hope they never change. Amazing place.

Good friends of our's mother is in assisted living there and they had a 90th birthday party for her. While we did not go into any of the rooms, we did get to see many of the common areas on the first floor and lower levels. It is really well appointed. When you enter the front door, you are greeted at the desk by a friendly person (who is really probably a guard). We said we were there for the party, and they directed us how to get to the right elevators, to go to the lower level, and how to get to the right room. Frankly, I think if she didn't do that I would have gotten lost. When you get on the lower level, I was really amazed by the services. What I saw (and I am sure there was more I missed) was a barber shop, beauty salon, gym, library, health center, party and meeting rooms and their dining room. There was a Christmas tree that had to be at least 20 feet tall, elegantly decorated. There were also a lot of residents around, many in wheelchairs or with walkers, all sitting around talking, waiting for the dining room to open. The party was in their "convenience store" which has a small lunch counter and chairs. The items for sale had been put away, and we were given access to the kitchen, lunch counter, and tables for the family to bring in food and beverages. What we saw was not a nursing home. There may be a floor dedicated to that, but we did not see it. What we saw was a mixture of people who are either living in independent living apartments or in assisted living. In the elevator, we saw a listing of the days activities - exercise, bingo, bunko, bridge and other card games - there were activities for the residents all day long. It really seems to be a top notch facility. Frankly, I am not sure how to rate this. And, I don't generally think I would write a review for a retirement community except for the fact that we had to put my father in a nursing home this past year in Pennsylvania. He is in a memory care unit, so there is really no way to compare one with the other. But, the facility he is in also has independent and assisted living, along with special care units for those with particular health needs. When we saw the assisted living areas in PA and compare them to what we saw in Hoffman Estates, they seem to be on par. So, three stars I would consider adequate for anyone's needs. I would love to learn more about how they operate - personally, I think we pay too little attention to the needs of the aging here in the US. I expect that after my recent experiences with two places built to house the elderly, I will really try t.o spend more time visiting and seeing where I can help out
