I recently had to have my car towed to this business, they told me there were many things wrong with my car which is understandable but told me they would fix the first and go from there, the main issue was overheating. They ordered a 'special' thermostat and charged me $600+ two weeks later the issue is present again and not resolved. Irritated to say the least when calling to tell them, they said there is not guarantee for anything that was done but they could look at it again. Whether I take it back there to be fixed or somewhere else I am down $600 for nothing to be fixed. They also called my phone upon the initial repair and asked to speak to the "man". We called and visited multiple other repair shops who were either closed or didn't have availability. Staff were attentive, courteous, informative, and prompt. I have almost always had good customer service experiences here, and oil changes and inspections were good, but the first real work I had done snowballed in a way that seems like it could only be due to shoddy work. During an oil change I asked for a tire rotation; I usually get it done at Costco since that's where I bought my tires, but I had a long drive (New York) the next day and figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. Simple, right? Well, on the way back from NY I started hearing grinding noises. I brought it back to Five Star and they said my right rear brake caliper had seized. Those brakes (installed by my mechanic in my prior town) only had 8k miles on them, zero problems or even hints of caliper leakage prior--either that or Five Star didn't notice. And you know what's a common cause of calipers seizing? Someone knocking the assembly during tire rotation. In 8 years of owning this car I have gone through brakes relatively quickly (Subaru, city driving), but never any issue with the calipers. Okay, so $600 later I've got brand new rear brakes AGAIN. Once the caliper seizes there's not much you can do. This was the only but significant time I had bad customer service--I stayed polite and calm (I wasn't accusing them of anything) but they got super defensive when I kept asking questions about the caliper failure, saying it happens "all the time" and acting like I was crazy for wanting to know why. I started going somewhere else instead for oil changes/inspections, a place way less convenient for me, but that has been great so far. And guess what my car needs, not quite one year or even 10k miles after my brand new rear brakes (complete with pads and rotors and calipers and brackets) from Five Star? A left rear caliper, because it's leaking. $200. Cheaper than a whole new rear brake assembly, but. Come. On. I hate to leave bad reviews of small businesses but the chain of failure from that repair visit has at this point cost me $800 and the defensive unwillingness of the shop to consider whether they had any responsibility for the failure left a real bad taste in my mouth. read more

They charged 120 for an oil change and they didn't screw in the front two screws on the drip pan after they were done. Long story short, I was on the freeway and it started grinding on the road and ended up bending and needed to be replaced. Also they were incredibly snobby which wouldn't have been a big deal as long as they just did their job right. read more

We've gone here for vehicle inspections for the last few years. Today, I went there for my inspection. They apparently couldn't do the fee as a credit transaction and insisted on a debit which, these days, I'm uncomfortable with. As I put in my PIN, the service person stood right next to me where he could see the numbers. When I got home, I called to say that I had been uncomfortable with this and why. The person I was speaking with got very argumentative and told me that I was showing no respect for him or the company. I hung up rather than be yelled at. He is correct with that. I recently moved to Beverly and hoped to support the local gas and auto center, esp. as it's one of the only POC employed businesses in the area. I went to get my car inspected and fill up my gas at Xtreme Car Care yesterday. After a brief conversation about Halloween and windshield wipers with the man working the gas pump, I was hit with a question: "What are all these colors on your car?" (Bumper stickers) "What, are you like a lesbian or something?" Unrelated to how well Xtreme Car Care can service a car, what happened yesterday was disrespectful and completely inappropriate. As an employee of this company, this man's actions reflect the approach and mindset of the organization. If a manager disagrees, I hope customer service and social skills training improves... ((My girlfriend's brilliant and obvious comebacks I wish I had used: "Maybe I am. Well so are you gay? Because you recognized the rainbow symbol so fast!" And to the point, "Don't you think that's an inappropriate question to be asking a stranger?")) It is NEVER appropriate to ask a stranger their sexual orientation. Especially not as an obvious, distasteful, and outright homophobic flirting tactic. For whatever it's worth, I do not have big rainbow stickers on my car or flaunt my sexual orientation through my gender expression much at all. I'm pretty sure this guy thought I would say "of course not" and play along with his misogynistic script. If gender equality, anti-oppressive interactions, and anti-homophobic experiences are something you want to see more of or believe in, then support businesses that share a similar mindset. read more

I went here for my car inspection and they failed me with a big fat red R and they said my car was unsafe to drive. I took it to the shop and I had a small hole in my exhaust nothing else was wrong with it. The guy went over everything that they said was wrong and failed me for and nothing was wrong with it!! George has been with me through five of my own cars and five of my family's. He has done brake (pads and rotors), clutch, full transmission, winter-wheel changeover, tire mount, ball bearing replacement, radiator replacement, alignments, inspections, fixed electrical problems, and all the other minutia of car ownership. Not one mistake. George will tell you what you need, how much it will cost, how long it will take, and give it to you straight every time. It's a small business with only a few guys working on the cars, so you may need to wait a little longer than another shop, but it's a 3-bay garage so they move fast enough and the wait is worth it. I went in for Maintenance for my car making an obvious loud banging sound on Wednesday June 29th 2022 . I had to rent a car for four days, over a holiday weekend until they finally looked at it. The rental cost me $300. Eventually after calling several times for an update, I was told there was nothing wrong, the technician said he drove my car for a half an hour and checked the transmission ( My problem and request had no indication of checking this.) When I went in to drop my car off I wrote a detailed description of the problem. I spoke with the tech for maybe 20 seconds. When I called I asked if someone could ride in the car with me to point out the sound. I went in July 6th 2022. Immediately when he got in the car he didn't say hello and demanded I start driving, The sound happened immediately. He got defensive raising his voice claiming to have driven the car. He said "I drove the car very fast and heard nothing." He claimed I did not explain the problem to him. I was quick to tell him while driving in my car that was not what I asked for and if he still had my paperwork. I hardly know anything about a car transmission. It is not something I would have brought up. I had a detailed written explanation upon drop off by request. The tech asked me to pull over and started yelling obscenities, threating me and telling to go &*&*^ myself, giving me the finger and slamming my door. I drove back to the garage and started to explain what happened and my confusion. The tech arrived moments later and I asked him why he was behaving in this way. He continued to swear and berate me in front of everyone. Waving his finger in the air and spitting out more insults and threatening me. He was very close to me. I asked him for my paperwork and he continued to rant and rave , putting his finger in my face. He was threating both violence and to call the cops. I stayed for a moment until the threats became overwhelming so I left. I don't have a clue what I did to deserve such a reaction. Nothing in my opinion should trigger a professional to act this way I will follow up with legal action or something. Warning you all of this behavior is a good first step. Don't go there. They won't fix your car and if you voice that to them, it becomes a very serious threatening and berating experience. What a horrible experience. read more

They are a busy and hard working shop. I brought my van in for a heater repair, they called me an hour later and said that it was an easy fix and under $300 to complete. A couple hours later I received another call, it was taking more time than expected and it was now going to cost around $400. That evening they called again, I expected them to tell me the van was done, but instead they wanted to tell me a part was "stuck". I drove over and they explained the issue, I kept asking for an estimate on what this was going to cost, instead of giving me an answer they kept telling me what a dealer would charge for this. Finally after some back and forth they finally said $650, including the oil change I was also having done. I was disappointed, but happy to get an answer and left. There were other customers in the room as well (if you see this please reach out) The next afternoon the van was done, I had my card ready to pay and they tell me the bill is $932! As you can imagine this was extremely frustrating. When I told them this was not what we agreed they got extremely angry and began yelling. I asked for the number to the customers who had been waiting while we spoke, but they instead told me they were going to call the police on me. I suggested that was a good idea for both sides. Unfortunately since I did not get this price agreement in writing the officer could not help me but they were extremely helpful in explaining the procedure to solve this in civil court. This is a large amount of money for me, and a big hit to my bank account and life. I left very upset that someone could so blatantly lie like this, and take advantage of an unknowing customer. Make sure to get any estimate in writing, this guy can't be trusted. read more

As I was driving through Beverly after an appointment, I knew that the plastic tray that protects the underside of my car needed to be screwed to the front so that it didn't rip off every time I go over a bump. I drove into Auto Shop and I asked if someone could screw it back, and if they didn't have time, don't feel like they have to rush. Not only did the owner fix my initial problem, he told me that my front brakes were really worn, and offered me an excellent price to fix them, same day. He also allowed me to drive one of his loaner cars. I felt that I could trust him right away. Went here to get a new radiator, price kept going up as they kept "finding" things wrong when my grand mother came to pay with her credit card tries to get me to add an extra $100 to bill and give Him 10% then he called and said on the day I was to pick it up there was something wrong with the wire to the cooling fan and pointed to an old wire that was for a speaker that no longer in my car when I refused to fix he refused to warrantee the work on the radiator which cost $650 and 1 week latter the fan and the thermostat went which is thought was odd so took to a different mechanic and when he loll at the car xtreme car car had only put in 1/4 of the amount of antifreeze necessary for a car to run THEY TRIED TO BLOW UP MY ENGINE and cause my fan switch and thermostat to go luckily I caught it in time before it caused serious damage to my car...
