I like the made-to-order concept of Five Guys. You order your basic burger and add on whatever toppings you want without any extra charges. However, this place was still a bit disappointing. Yes the burgers are better than your average fast food joint and they are gigantic but it just didn't do it for me. I ordered a little cheeseburger with plenty of toppings; ketchup, grilled onions, pickles, lettuce and tomato (nothing outrageous), yet it tasted pretty average. The fries are hand cut on location and they were also just okay. Again, you do get an enormous amount but they are just average fries. I also had a strawberry shake and that was the best part of the meal but I won't be going there just to order that. On a good note, the service is super quick! You know the saying "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"? I've only eaten at this Five Guys (or any Five Guys for that matter) twice, and on both occasions, I've come down with a case of food poisoning. The first time, in summer of 2010, it was bad enough that I had vomiting and a fever for the next 24 hours after eating their burgers. The second time (just this weekend), I talked myself into hoping that it was just a fluke the first time, so I decided to order a burger while foregoing lettuce just to make the cheeseburger a bit safer to eat. That thinking landed me at an ER getting anti-nausea medication and fluids fed intravenously a few hours later. Bottom line is:both times my husband ate there with me, and both times we both got sick, though I always seem to have the more violent reaction out of the two of us. We've eaten at many other burger places both locally and nationwide. We're also not delicate flowers when it comes to eating (I can handle spicy, greasy, and everything in between no problem), so I just have to conclude that the people who work at this establishment routinely come to work sick enough to spread foodborne illnesses despite following food-safety requirements. Great location, right in the landing next to the local theater. The wait is always about 10-15 minutes no matter how many people were in line before you. I've been lucky, though, to beat the rush somehow. AYCE roasted peanuts in huge barrels free for the taking = YES. I hate when complimentary things like condiments are guarded by staff either near or behind the register counters, but these peanuts were just all up for grabs. Anyway, the burgers are huge, I can barely finish the Jr burgers. Nothing too special, but they do have a crapload of additions (A1, bbq, jalpenos, mushrooms, etc) for no added cost. read more

My husband and I have visited 5 guys at the landing a few times now since they've been open. Every time we have been impressed by the quality and the service. They have a great selection but at the same time they stick to the basics which helps with ordering and keeping things running efficiently. Five Guys seems to have made a foothold in the area, despite all the competition they face. This is a national chain burger joint which has recently sprung up in various Washington cities, and while I've read many glowing reviews, I'd have to say they're pretty average. First off, the good: burgers are made to order, and there's a large amount of topping choices. Fries are fresh cut and portions are huge (a large is enough for 3-5 people). The bad: They do not melt the cheese into the patties, so you're left with a hot burger and cold cheese.sitting on top. Topping portions are mediocre, and the fries are not double fried, and thus end up being somewhat soggy. What else can I say - several things going in favor of this place. Burgers are messy and damn tasty, toppings are plentiful and free, fries always seem to come out piping hot and have that boardwalk flavor thanks to the peanut oil they use. Speaking of peanuts, you can shell your own and munch on them while waiting for your food. They also have a lot of different fountain drink flavors to choose from, many more than you'd expect from a typical "free refills" joint. Each time I have been here, the staff works like clockwork. They pump out orders very quickly considering they have to custom-make each burger with the toppings you've ordered. Restaurants could learn a thing or two from them. There are a few cons - the food is awesome but it's absolutely horrible for you. By that I mean that Five Guys' burgers are usually highlighted as the unhealthiest things you can order from a fast food restaurant in those articles in magazines or in the life section of the newspaper. However, I'd regard this as a once every few months place - not a regular lunch stop. Also, seating is very limited. I have had to wait, bag in hand, for seating to open up on each occasion I have been here (2), and not at peak lunch time either (2:30pm). It's a testimony to their popularity - it wouldn't be packed if they put out a mediocre product. If you're in the area, and want a burger, you can't do any better than Five Guys. IMO they beat out Burgermaster, Fatburger, Kidd Valley, etc. read more

Being from the Washington DC area originally, i'm already familiar with Five Guys. I was shocked to find one had opened right down the street from me. I can happily say that the quality of the food has not been lost in translation whatsoever. Granted, you shouldn't eat there more than a couple times a week, and even that's pushing it.(unless you're doing P90X twice a day-in that case have at it) If you're looking for a good, no-frills burger, this is your place. Just make sure you eat the fries within 30 minutes or so- they're fresh cut from fresh potatoes, so they don't have the preservatives of fast-food fries. Therefore, they go soggy pretty quickly. Also, if you have a peanut allergy stay away! Every time i go, there seems to be someone making a fuss at the counter who couldn't read the sign right there on the door. read more

Funny reading some of the reviews. Don't like the burger because the bun fell apart? I don't eat a burger for the bun. Greasy not juicy? They don't put grease on the grill, just meat. What is dripping from the burger is the fat from the meat(juice), not grease. The fries are the best. Fresh cut, not too thin where you can hardly tell they are a potato, and not too thick where it's like eating a baked potato(Red Robin). There are definitely enough of them. Sometimes I get a few limp ones but mostly they are very crisp and the cajun is nice and spicy. The regular fries are a little bland but that is why you have a salt shaker. You can put more on but you can't take it off. Shake it till you like it. It is loud so I probably wouldn't recommend you take someone there on a first date but if you did, don't get the raw onions on your burger. Price is more than Micky D's but less than 2 Kobe beef sliders at a local wine bar($12! and I was still hungry). This has been my favorite burger since I found them in D.C. and will probably remain so for awhile. This is the way a burger is supposed to be: fresh, juicy, sloppy and delicious. Almost forgot, in many of the reviews, people talk about it being so busy. A business that has been open over a year is crowded and busy a lot. There is a reason for that. read more

I had to give this place a 3 because they wouldnt let me do 2.5. I was told about this place because the burgers were so delish. And they were, IF..... if, they get it right. Once a year I eat here for lunch at the request of coworkers, enjoy the fatty goodness for a few minutes and then remember why I only come once a year. I like being able to add all but some of the toppings and still get the ones I didn't ask for. With so many toppings, there are so many options to how to fix the burger. I don' think this place wants to be known so much for the taste of its burgers, as it does for the freshness. The burgers here taste very fresh, particularly the extras you add in (all included in price of the burger). One look at the menu and you'll see that they don't offer anything particularly "unique", as all of the condiments and burger types are standard fare at any burger joint. Five Guys has gotten bad press lately about how unhealthy their fries are and they truly are. The portion is large for both regular (feeds 2) and large (feeds 4). The saltiness is off the charts, particularly for the "cajun" style fries. This establishment is in a nice location in The Landing, next to Regal Cinemas. The music they play is old-fashioned which I love, and the peanuts you get to eat for an appetizer is also a cool little feature. Overall, not a bad burger joint by any means, although don't expect anything superbly delicious or unique, otherwise you'll be disappointed. If, however, you are looking for a solid and simple burger with some friends or loved ones, you can't go wrong here. I suppose this would be my review for all of the Five Guys places! read more

This is one of my favorite burger places. You can choose as many toppings as you want and with the recent addition of the coke freestyle machine, this place is a definite go to. The only downside is their food is REALLY filling (They give you so many fries even if you order a small size but I guess that's not really a bad thing) so I usually leave here super stuffed. read more

One of the best burger places I have been to. Their Burgers are salty, but I like that and they are NOT stingy on the Fries. One thing I noticed is that their Fountain Soda always seem to have the correct amount of mixture as I never had one that was too syrupy. I thought little was a happy meal size burger but nope, it's one patty. the hamburger has 2. ok, one is fine. I am not that hungry today. now let's ask about the fries. little is how big? the guy who took our order said the regular is usually good for 2 people but I thought I try the little and if we need more, I will know for next time. little is REGULAR in most other joints. regular must be large! so am glad we didn't go for regular. great thing and maybe my only thing about Five Guys is add-ons are free! that is cool!! burger was bit greasy otherwise nothing to wow about. fries were bit soggy. I like that potatoes are local but local or not, soggy fries is not great. so ho hum...I probably won't be returning even for the free add-ons. oh there were 4 employees sitting at a table and chatting. there were probably 4-5 people in the back working the grill and registers and one person cleaning. It was just around 2pm when we got there so it wasn't busy. think there was one other table with customers so there were more employees than customers! don't know the history of the peanuts, sure they're free but I didn't come for peanuts. plenty of other people seem to like it but I think I'll go to fatburger instead. read more

There was some kind of assembly line burger making operation with 10 people involved that apparently required alot of shouting and tossing things around, Located next to a popular movie theater, the place get consistent business from movie-goers. A person whom was familiar with the small menu, that had less discreption than that of the uninitiated and listless cashier, may have been able to order a desirable meai. 3 sandwitches, 2 fries, & 3 soda = $32. Burgers - Mass produced buns with bland fixings- Totally Unremarkable. With all of the high quality burgers out there (Kobe Beef, Buffallo, Steamed Hams, Groumet this & that) , how can American Cheese on pretty generic ground beef be on what is touted as "The Best Burger." The sauted onions were tasty on their own right, but even these failed to justify $5 for this burger. My wife ordered a veggie burger and got a hamburger bun with lettuce and tomato for $4. Sides- If you like a lot of fires, you'll be in heaven. An order of Two Large Fires resulted in a oil spotted medium brown paper bag had enough fries for 6 persons. This would be good if the fries were anything special, but alas they were medium cut, skin on potatoes fried just short of crispy. Ketchup seemed to be the only condiment. The "Cajun" fries sounds like a good idea (I didnt see this on the small menu.) Order some with a small coke and skip the burger. Drinks - Soda Dispenser "Free Refills" & $2 bottled water. I am sure the teens teens that wander around the mall area and drink soda all day find it convieniant.
