I left here feeling like I had witnessed a crime. The burgers are fantastic. The plain fries are great. The cajun sucks - I love anything cajun but those are just some fries dipped in stale generic "cajun" spice. There is no attempt at anything other than corporate masturbation here. And the tables are jammed too close together. Maybe if anyone in that place had a Lake Oswego waistline, it could be ok, but there wasn't a single skinny person in that joint, except for the staff member who was blowing his nose without changing his gloves after. Everyone else had a solid layer of pudge, if not several solid layers. This is where obese America comes to feed. Now, granted, you won't ever find the ammonia treated "pink slime" that McDonalds and other fast food joints dilutes their ground beef with. You can get grilled mushrooms, onions, and fresh jalapenos on your burger and it is divine. But, for the love of God, why can't one buy their kid a milk in here? The obvious answer is that no one should be feeding their kid here. So, that out of the way (no one warned me of this, and most of the people in here had kids, guess they were all first timers, too), the drink options are soda, some crap with a bunch of food coloring, and water. Hippies and tree huggers beware. Not only is the food a fast ticket to dying young, the water cups are styrofoam. Portion size be damned. This place's regular burger is two big patties. You have to ASK for "little" in order to get one patty, and it's a big patty. There is no proper amount of food being dished up. The small fries is huge. If they're planning on killing their customer base young, I can't think of a more perfect plan. Yes, the burger was delicious. But I'm not sure how anyone can walk in here and not feel a little twist of sadness at the oversized Americans trough-eating here, with a little help from the five guys corporate cattle prod. I know. Personal accountability is the rule. But the portions and items offered are such overwhelmingly poor health choices that it is hard to look around the dining room without feeling like you're watching people dying a little right in front of you. Messed up my take out order and when I called after getting home to see it was wrong, I called and they were rude (including the manager) and told me to hold while they decided what to do! ??? Forget it! Service needs to be investigated by the company - the employees (managers included) have downgraded the joy of good service and a good burger to feeling like you are at Burger King. I like to think FGBF is better than that - way better. I hope the management and employees get an overhaul - til then, I'd drive the extra distance to the other ones instead! read more

Cattle car gourmet. That's what I call this place. The experience starts with standing in a lengthy line (sometimes out the door) with a horde of the hungry denizens of Beaverton - all thirsting for a burger that reminds them of distant home lands (California) or even mom's kitchen table. No less than a dozen workers coordinate in an assembly line process that would make Henry Ford jealous in order to efficiently construct the burger that you just ordered. They call out your assigned number at the counter once they have completed your custom masterpiece and you're forced to meander and pick your way through other guests and furniture strewn about to claim your newfound gastrointestinal treat. The ambiance is basically strip mall hell with cheap tables and chairs crammed together on a concrete floor. Signs highlighting the good reviews that Five Guys have received cover up the windows in a vain attempt to hide the mediocrity of Beaverton from the patrons. This flagrant display of interior ad copy seems out of place - as if you aren't about to discover for yourself exactly what the burgers taste like in just a few, short moments. What this restaurant lacks in sophistication is more than compensated for by the visceral assault of pure juicy carnivorous delight. There are nothing but burgers and hot dogs on this menu - save for a token veggie sandwich to appease our vegetarian friends. However, the customization available for each burger ensures that everyone comes away happy. Besides the standards like grilled onions and grilled mushrooms, go ahead and splurge with a little bit of A-1 and hot sauce. The buns have a home-style flair to them and the toppings are fresh. The patties (two if you order the standard burger) are thick and juicy. The fries demonstrate exactly what is wrong with the limp, greasy fries of Oregon's native sons (McMenamins and Burgerville) - they are crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and well seasoned. These burgers occupy an interesting niche - positioned between fast food burgers and chain restaurant burgers. Their quality is definitely superior to the average fast food burger, but is slower and more expensive as well. Their burgers are almost equivalent in the taste department to a Red Robin or Ruby Tuesday's burger, but sans the customer service, food presentation (Five Guys food is presented in a paper bag) or nice eating area. Go ahead and split a large fry as there should be plenty for a couple. Any comparisons to In-And-Out burger are misguided - Five Guys have their own burger that is able to survive the taste test on its own merits. read more

First time the manager wouldn't even replace my food and called me a liar, called corporate to at least get refund and they never even called me back after promising a refund. Beware the place that has to post how great it is over every square foot of the place. This is Five Guys. This place is alright, but not what the hype makes you think it is going to be. The up sides: Free peanuts Generous servings of fries Lots of toppings for the burger Other non-burger options when you order more than one burger, they will label each burger with a sticker so you know which one it which, according to the receipt The downsides: fries can be soggy Cajun fries aren't all that Cajun-y burgers aren't that flavorful I have had them mess up on many of my orders, and this has happened to friends, too. they always give you your food in a bag even if you are eating in - weird and wasteful they wrap the burgers in foil which can contribute to sogginess. All in all, this place is pretty OK, but not the greatest. I would recommend trying it out, but like many of my fellow Yelpers have suggested, it's no In-N-Out. read more

Good burgers but they are very full of themselves. The burgers themselves are on par with In-N-Out or Fatburger, which means great for a chain in Portland. Fries are also good. But what an alien concept for a burger joint in this town. First, it's stuck far away in a strip mall in Beaverton. Second, everything in the place from the walls, the soft drink cups to the bathrooms is covered with copies of glowing reviews from Washington, DC. WTF? Who in Oregon cares what magazines in DC say about a place? I'm eating here, not 3,000 miles away. And if you've spent anytime in DC, you'd know that a positive review from The Washingtonian magazine means about as much as a smile from a stripper. They have quite a shtick going, from boxes of free peanuts to shouted orders on the grill line - kind of like the flying fish guys in Pike Place Market. Between piles of potato sacks on the floor and peanut oil canisters stacked by the door; between sparse red and white tiling and self aggrandizing posters everywhere it comes across very much like what Costco would design if Costco served burgers instead of hot dogs. Just as further evidence that this East Coast chain is somewhat alien in Portland, it also uses an exorbitant amount of styrofoam. The place generates an enormous amount of non-recyclable waste just to serve burgers and fries. And finally, it is expensive. Great burgers, I agree, but expensive. And so into itself. read more

A-OK. What more can I say? Five Guys wins a couple brownie points with me because of the way you place your order. It is refreshing to NOT have to say "no...no...no..." when placing my order. I just don't want to sound so negative. I rather appreciate simply telling someone what I DO want on a burger. So thank you Five Guys for the little bit of extra positivity in my life. But rating a burger joint comes down to more then evaluating the ordering process. I'll put it frankly - this is not a burger to piss your pants about. Personally, I like it better than burgerville... It's hard to beat fresh ingredients on a made-to-order burger. Got here on New Year's Eve, hardly a line, but had quite a few people inside. Peanuts all over the floor, boxes of potatoes on the main floor waiting to be cut. Not sure if this was typical or if the weather/holiday had anything to do with the upkeep. Burger was very solid, and the fries were fresh and fantastic. We were in a rush, but definitely will be back to enjoy it a little more. New burger place in Beaverton called 5 guys. How could I miss that ? So after reading up on the reviews here I wasted no time off to 5 guys. I now understand why I missed it, located in a shopping center that I never go to. A huge line inside, I see boxes of peanuts so I grab a handful and wait for my turn to order. After ordering and waiting about 10 min. up comes my order. The burger is good, the burger is hot, it may not be the best in the Portland metro area but it's the best around Beaverton. The fry"s I made a big mistake on. See I wanted to try the regular fry's but the Cajun fry's sounded great so I ordered both thinking I would not waste very much and I would know what to get next time I came in. I should have paid closer attention to the reviews on the amount you get. Two lunch sack size bags had my fry's. It was French fry overload. I ended up eating a little of both but that was maybe half of a bag full at best. This was a lot like In-n-Out but still not quite the same. They do a few things and they do them well. This was the only burger place that I could go to. After how I was just treated on the phone by the manager after reporting getting sick; I will not be returning to this location. I was dismissed because the health inspector was there yesterday and "went over everything with a fine tooth comb". That dry BLT was the only thing that I ate yesterday and the symptoms that hit me at 3 am (12 hours after eating it) this morning are synonymous with bad lettuce. I wasn't even asking for a refund (which I should have); I just wanted to inform the restaurant of that concern. I was treated with defensiveness and dismissal. Five Guys is a burger joint, plain and simple. It's not a place for a nice date. It's not a place to sit and stare at all the memorabilia on the walls. Five guys is a place where you go in, sit down, throw some peanut shells on the floor, talk loudly to your friends, and watch the army of people behind the counter preparing burgers while you eat yours. Five guys has the burger thing down. The patties are never frozen, so they taste like a burger joint burger should. There's no nuanced flavor here, but if you're looking for nuance, you should be visiting a steakhouse instead of a burger joint. Condiments (including grilled onions and mushrooms) are included in the price. Five Guys also has the fry thing down. The fries are thick-cut, skin-on fries that are fried in peanut oil. They come out just the right combination of soft and crispy. They also always throw some extra fries right into the bottom of your bag. The place also definitely has some atmosphere, but once again, it's not nuanced. if you're looking for someplace that does nuance, you're in the wrong place. Even the stuff that would normally be branded somewhere else (bags, wrappers, fry containers) are all plain -- no branding on anything but the receipts and the stuff they have in the store. This isn't a bad thing, though, since it tastes like the money they save goes right back into things like higher quality food and employees. read more

Finally, Five Guys has arrived in Portland! If you're from the East coast or selected locations in California, you know who these guys are. Juicy burgers, monster hot-dogs, groovy grilled cheese and fries that are a little piece of heaven! Oh, and all you can eat peanuts in the shell! What is not to like about this place, it is right on par with In-n-Out, without the 400+ mile drive to Redding, CA. The burgers are done just right, with you choice of 15 different toppings. I recently was in the area on business and stopped into Five Guys. I thought the food was excellent. The burgers are freshly made and cooked to order. The fries are fresh, hand cut and you get a lot of them. Yeah there was a line but it moved along at a good pace. I would rather wait a few minutes and get a burger that tastes like it was made in my back yard then get it fast and have to choke it down. The fries were fantastic. Yup they were greasy but guess what, fries are greasy unless you get the cardboard ones at BK. Yes, they are slightly more expensive but think about it..a brand new resturant in a fairly pricy area giving you hand made food. These burgers don't come out of a big frozen box like McD or BK. Five Guys, keep on doing what you're doing. You're making the vast majority of the folks happy. You will never be able to please everyone!!! read more

So I know my In and Out loving Southern California based family is going to hate me for this but... I FAR prefer Five Guys to In and Out. The burgers are big, crispy, and messy... the way they should be. You can get just about anything you want on them, and you don't pay extra. Side note, the difference between regular and small is the number of patties. We didn't know this and ordered the regular, and got 2 huge patties on our burger. No way I was going to finish that! Small for me next time... The fries was more than enough for two people. We ordered 2 large to share for 4 people. We could have easily share 1 large given the large scope of fries they toss in the bag to top of your order. I know the comparison is like comparing apples to oranges, so I won't try to compare the joints. I'll just set up camp with the "its better than In and Out" people and enjoy my burger. read more

This place was crazy busy on an early Sunday evening when my girlfriend and I decided to try this place out. Not only was there a line, but the majority of the tables were taken. The amount of workers behind the counter equaled approximately 8 employees, so we knew that this place gets busy on a regular basis. The ordering of the food is always a fun process because you get to choose from a variety of toppings and condiments. The waiting time took about 5-10 minutes which I felt was reasonable given the amount of orders they take. In addition to our burgers, we ordered some fries. The burger tasted pretty good, mainly because it had whatever I wanted in it, especially the jalapenos, grilled onions and BBQ sauce. However, the fries were extremely oily especially for a place that takes pride in cutting their own potatoes. I would think that they would try to create their fries so we could taste more potato than oil. But overall, it was tasty, and the meal was delicious. I juts do not want to imagine the amount of calories I consumed that evening, but if you're gonna eat burgers and fries you shouldn't be worrying about that! read more

Hmm... Rating this place is hard. I like the concept. The burgers are good and the customizable options will blow your brain! The staff was nice. It just was not an enjoyable place to sit and eat though. REALLY bright lights and stark decor made the room itself feel a bit like a cafeteria. I was curious about just what it would be like to order a 10 patty burger... they didn't even bat an eye. Just simply asked what toppings I wanted on it. Without thinking I added the jalapenos (fresh cut and not canned and pickled - so they are spicy as they should be.) ... also added some BBQ sauce, cheese, tomatoes and ordered the large fries. I am not a teen any more and am quite sure NOW that I can easily order more than I can eat. That burger was great - it was very juicy and HUGE. I never should have ordered it alone. It was worth trying to hold that monster just once though. The fries alone (fresh cut and never frozen) were enough to fill me as it was... add the burger of all burgers on top and I am in heaven. Did I mention the burgers are hand formed on site? These aren't some over pressed cookie cutter patty. really, enough with the In-N-Out comparisons. I like both but the only thing they have in common is that they both serve burgers and fries ordered at a counter. the burgers are made to order and offer a lot of condiment choices, everything from grilled mushrooms to hot sauce (along with all of the staples you'd expect). I just ordered a little burger and it was more than enough, especially with all of the condiments. the regular burger comes with two patties (I guess that's another reason people are comparing it). they also have hot dogs and a veggie option. the cajun fries are another story. some of the best I've had (and I'm a fry snob). a regular is more than enough for two people to share. another plus, peanuts in the shell to enjoy while waiting in line and for your order. one negative is the wait time. don't come here if you're in a hurry. expect to wait at least 10 minutes for your order. it's definitely worth the wait. read more

I just wanted a cheeseburger, maybe add some grilled onions and I'm good. It's rare these days, in the milieus whence I dwell, to go out specifically for burgers, and all the rarer to stay for a dine in experience. If you don't offer drive-through, at least offer some adult beverage selections and mindless sports TV. 5 Guys offers none of these amenitites-- none that I saw in Beaverton, anyways. What Los Cinco Hombres DO offer, in-store, involves dated plaudits of themselves from various print media sources all over their walls, including in the holy-of-holies, their unisex WCs. I noted that none of said hype dated any more recently than 2008. Not sure if that is a testament to how how long, chronologically, this particular franchise has been at this particular locale, or possibly, could it be the last time anyone in all of print media felt compelled to give a little love....? We loved that 5Gs offered such a swell assortment o' toppin's, incl. the grilled onions and mushrooms, though they (shrooms) were undoubtedly of the canned variety, they were still a welcome addition and difference from most chain restaurant offerings. The thick, juicy patties on the burgers were a tasty treat. We were completely unprepared for their choice of buns. Everything else--including the prices (their basic hamburger is $4.99, remember) about 5Gs suggests 'mid-to-upper scale-ish'..... but their buns, oh their buns. We found the buns @ 5Gs to be of the cheapest, bleach flour and sesame seed variety. They were utterly insubstantial yet, from a dietary standpoint, if you're gonna commit a carnal sin, these sorry buns wound up being about as venal and unredeemable as it gets. 5 Guys, why oh why would you choose to use such blatantly cheap buns on a $5+ burger? One cross word, or harsh glance and *poof* evil carbs immediately teleported to ones buns or perhaps somewhere even less flattering. One other observation, and Lord knows it's a small thing. Still, I was in such a good mood when we went there, but when I saw the sign on the wall that said "Today's potatoes came from such-and-such a farm out in Idaho," it failed to resonate. Maybe they're having a little tongue-in-cheek good fun w/the modern craze about relentless and scrutinizing sourcing if ones wares and standing strong against any possible mistreatment of our food..... it's 'just another' reminder about how messed up our priorities as a culture really have become. On the whole: nothing so great about this place--not even w/the free peanuts, that I can imagine going out of my way to go there again--but then again, not so terrible as to be of the "never, ever again variety," either. There's a write-up on the wall as you stand in line for your order to be taken. It says something like..."if this place had been in business before McDonald's was created, we would NOT have McDonald's" - and they are RIGHT. Whoo baby - hot, perfect burgers. Extras that are FREE - yes FREE - stuff like jalapenos and mushrooms - free! And this is a juicy, fresh, never frozen patty that is large, cooked right, and tasty. The bun is perfect, the lettuce is not shredded into salad but has whole leaves, just the way I love it. You have to put up with noise, barely maneuverable digs, children screaming and long lines, and I'd do it everyday for that burger. The fries? Meh - I got the cajun and they were spiced really nice, good heat in there (as cajun should be hot by its nature) but the fries themselves were my one minus star. Nothing wrong with them, just not my type - they were a little too thick for me, too potato-ey for me, and again this is all just my taste. I think others might love them. Me, I like skinny, greasy, crispy pomme fritte type fries. Hey get your BUNS up to Five Guys and try a burger. Get your order ready in your mind because the line moves quickly and even though I'd been studying the small list of choices for 10 minutes, they still took me by surprise when I got to the front of the line. This is the big kahuna burger we have all dreamed about... massively juicy flavor in thick double patties with unlimited toppings ranging from the standard sweet pickles to the hot sauce, with ample tomatoes, cheddar, and grilled onions (and 10 other things) in between. Fresh-cut potato fries with Heinz or A-1 are wonderful in their own right. But here they just accent the burger. The way it should be. I do love a good burger, this place is good, not great. I don't understand all the hype everyone gives it? I mean sure, it's decent beef, the condiment choices are great and it's cool that the standard burger comes with not one but two patties for those that are super hungry. Nothing about the burger itself stood out to me though. The fries were good also but not great, I had them cajun style and seriously the regular size order is ginormous, I cannot imagine how big the large order is.. YIKES! I don't care how many awards they have yet they have them plastered on every window, wall and door. Again what's with the hype? One of the better burger joints around here... They are super friendly. You get peanuts while you wait. Idk why I love that so much but it's a Fact. The burgers are money. Nice and juicy. Lots of topping Options. My favorite part honestly is the way they give you fries if your getting it to go. They fill up your cup with fries which is extremely chill and then proceed to just say "mannnnn lets give em' some more and they will throw some In your bag. I like that. Scratch that, I love that. Okay, I'm not even going to compare them to anyone else. On their own merits alone, this place is awful!!!! The burgers are tasteless, I mean no seasoning at all (salt is not a nasty word!!). If you can get past the lack of flavor you then need to overcome a SOGGY, GREASY bun. Yuck. I ate about 4 bites and then threw mine away. I got the small burger, which is more than any adult should need as it is huge. I saw people shoveling in 2 patty burgers like it was nothing. It was a bit hard to watch. The fries are just okay, nothing new here people as they are large cut with skin on. Bottom line, I won't eat here again. (And yes, Carl's Jr. burgers have more flavor, sorry, but true). The first 2 times I went to this location I thought it was a solid 5-star. The last time it was a solid 3-star. On a good day the burger is fresh and juicy and hot and the fries are great. Deep in the depth that is Beaver-tron, there lives...5 guys burgers. upon entering, you'll get a call out " 2 entering" which was silly and I enjoyed it. Despite the hype this was a good burger. It's not the best in Portland, there are far better places, but it's the wacky experience of an oddity in the middle of a strip mall that I enjoyed. The place smells of delicious hot grease and engulfs you like the little gluten you are. And let's face it, I wouldn't travel but I was in the area. I liked the weird peanuts you throw on the floor, cause it's weird, and different and it's them. The burgers fall apart, but their juicy and tasty and soft meat obviously not frozen. assembly line style, they whip it together with local potatos fried in peanut oil with malt vinegar and tons of ketchup. I was a fan. Never been to in-and-out, seems there's a lot of hype there too so I don't judge. seems to me this place is uniquely their own thing. It's just a greasy spoon cheeseburger, with some fresh cut fries. I wouldn't make the trek if your not in the area, but I thought ketchup, mustard and pickle relish with gooey cheese and crispy bacon, with a mountain of fries were what I wanted, and that's what I got. no complaints. I've been craving French Fries for weeks. And when this happens it usually just best that I eat a damn French fry. Carafe would have been my first choice, but alas, closed on Sundays. We've been hearing a lot of hype about Five Guys and recently read an article about them in INC magazine that made their business model sound admirable. So we made the trek out to Beaverton. The line was short. The service was quick and friendly. Hence the extra star. I got a little bacon cheeseburger with "everything," and a "regular" fry. It was only okay. The fries were completely unseasoned. The texture was decent, but the flavor was lacking. The burger was just a burger with a lot of stuff on it. I probably would have given this place three stars if I wrote the review immediately after eating there. But two hours later I had the worst "fried food hangover." Headache, upset stomach, heartburn. If I were driving through a city on a road trip and required immediate sustenance and there was a choice between Five Guys and say, Applebees, I'd go with Five Guys. Add a sketchy diner into the mix and the sketchy diner would probably win. read more

Nice idea, fun atmosphere, lots of choices for burger toppings, but I'd prefer In-N-Out over Five Guys. Luckily, I can in California. At In-N-Out, I can get the amount of burger I want, the amount of fries I want (that aren't burnt or greasy) and a milkshake for a few bucks less. Staff is super friendly though, and the free peanuts are fun. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if this continues to grow wildly in the burger industry. Popular, just not my thing. read more

I am almost surprised at myself for giving them a 4. I tend to rant about places that don't cook burgers to order so I am really diverging here... But the reason is that this is really a fast food joint without a drive thru. For a fast food burger, I don't think it gets much better than this, In N' Out would be the only contender (sorry Burgerville, it's still thin and flavorless). The burger meat is juicy and as tasty as a medium well done piece of meat can be. I like how they do the toppings. The fries. You love em or... well I guess you don't love em. I don't really love em but they're just not my style. I'll have a couple of a shared bag if I'm in a group so it's not like they're inedible, just... not the crispy happy piece of potato I prefer. So... Burgerville truly has my heart when it comes to cheeseburgers. And in no way can anyone compare this place to In-N-Out Burger. Nothing compares to In-N-Out! Just saying... now keep reading. I wanted to mix it up a bit and tried this place while shopping with a friend. Really good value for what you get... FYI- the junior hamburger is plenty big enough to fill your belly. They give you your order in a paper bag so that the over flowing fries have a place to rest their golden little heads. I recommend the junior burger with bacon and BBQ sauce. Otherwise the burger is a little dry. One downside Five Guys, your restaurant produces a lot of waste. For example, the paper bag, fry holder, tin foil, and the much needed wad of napkins. For "here" orders you should really come up with a more waste reducing way to serve your food. read more
