TL:DR GO HERE! You won't regret it.
Let me start my review with some real honesty here: I bailed on my first meet with Thom, one of the owners of FIT, and sent my husband in my place.
I thought all these reviews were fake, or written by muscle-tech-bros who love to "crush it" and survive on bacon and butter-coffee. I, a normal if not slightly out of shape middle-aged woman have no place here. No gym could be that nice, no trainer that helpful - this is an insane gym-spiracy!
I WAS SO WRONG.
I was skittish on my now second opportunity to meet with Thom, and was ready to find flaws. There were none. He was kind, patient, and we chatted for hours, yes HOURS- like 3 - talking about separating the truth from the bullsh*t when it comes to health. We talked about what I was really trying to get out of all this, the reasons behind the goals I put forth. I walked out feeling lighter, understood.
"I know someone who is perfect for you," Thom said. He matched my husband and I with our new trainer Jeff P. the next day. Right again, Thom.
Jeff Prusmack is a prince among men. I can grab a thesaurus and find every complimentary word, write it here, and it still wouldn't express how fantastic Jeff P. is.
I wanted to learn all about the mysteries of weightlifting, something that's not normally offered to slightly out of shape middle-aged woman, and Jeff P. taught me. He didn't even mind that time where I almost hit him with a very very big barbell as I accidentally flung it across the room instead of dropping it.
He's completely intuitive and knows when I really can't do something vs. when I'm whining. He knows how to cheer me up with a kettlebell workout and some Pantera on the soundtrack if I walk in with a scowl on my face. He knows I secretly-not-so-secretly like besting my husband and lets us be competitive but never reckless. I would follow Jeff P. to the ends of the earth (unless of course it involved lunges... sorry Jeff P., I draw the line)
Now for the facilities, and the people.
FIT is like if like Gleason's Boxing Gym had a fruit bowl and a fancy machine that gives me any temperature of water I want. It's both raw and fancy. I don't know how they pull that off, but they do.
No one is talking on their cellphone while on the treadmill, every face is friendly (yes, even the bacon-butter bros), and everyone is there to work. The mix of people is almost surreal. A gym-topia. There are senior citizens deadlifting next to tech-alpha types and kids with special needs. We're all happy for each other and doing our own thing and everyone has enough space at all times. It's like nothing I've ever seen. I love it. I CRAVE it. Seriously, I'm now a total jerk who goes, "Oh yay, it's Tuesday! Time for training!" I post deadlifting videos on Instagram. I'd hate me too.
Now for the con, of course there had to be one. Well, like all things that are good for you, it's expensive. Unjustly expensive? I don't think so. I get ultra-personalized service, constant support, the ability to hit the gym sans-trainer whenever I want, and, for once in my life, the feeling of not being awkward or out of place. We're all just here to bring out the best of ourselves. I look at it this way - it's cheaper than therapy, and will probably be cheaper than any bone density scan that I'm staving off by weight training NOW instead of later. That's fact.
In summation, and hopefully you've read this far, DO THIS FOR YOU. Meet the owners, they're not scary. Check the place out and ask anyone there and they'll tell you how awesome it is for EVERYbody and everyBODY. Come lift heavy things next to me! I'll be in the back, listening to Pantera, being my new bad-ass self. read more
