Quaint little place in Victoria harbor. Visit only if you have a lot of time to kill or if it's close to your cruise ship like in our case. There are about 20-30 colorful floating houses with some buzzing restaurants here. We went on a Saturday evening in August so the place was packed and vibe was amazing. There are water taxis and whale tours you can take from here or just get a plate of fish and chips and soak in the vibe around. Place is not very large so don't go with high expectations. read more

Just go--it's fun; it's full of vivid colors; it offers lots of restaurants and easy to access bathrooms. We enjoyed good service from two restaurants and a fun conversation with a resident. We've been here when it's crowded (less fun) and we've been here when it's raining (less crowded), but our Goldilocks middle is the end of May / start of June or in October. Maybe this is a fun destination in the spring and summer but definitely not in the winter. We came in late January and the only place open was the Mexican restaurant. All other stores and restaurants were closed; one had a sign that said it will reopen in late March. Mainly residential and food establishments with very few gift shops. read more

Unique Fisherman's Wharf [Victoria BC] I've enjoyed going to a few Fisherman's Wharf in California where tourists and locals can eat, play, and shop but much is to be said for this unique fisherman's wharf... people actually live here in floating homes like a small community. It wasn't as big as San Francisco's or Monterey's in California but it was cool seeing the private homes. * Food - they have pizza, fish & chips, a Hawaiian-themed grill, and Mexican food. Order lunch or dinner at any of these food kiosks and find a place to sit at the community table seating area. Enjoy the views! They also have a mini donut shop and an ice cream shop (Victoria's famous floating ice cream store) LoL! * Shops - there was only one gift store we saw. Unfortunately, it was closed when we arrived. Business hours were 11:00a to 6:00p. * Water taxi - these iconic pickle boats will transport passengers to any designated ferry stops within the harbor and surrounding waterways. You can travel by water taxi or enjoy a guided tour. Fun to see them on water. * Whale Watching Tours - tours are available at their kiosks. Open and covered boats are available for booking * Private homes - there are 33 berths designated for floating residences, we strolled on the docks and admired these float homes. They seem to be all occupied. I loved seeing each uniquely designed colorful homes. Please respect quiet hours and private property. * Commercial fishing vessels - love fishing? Fish for salmon, halibut or cod in the Pacific Ocean... steelhead trout or salmon when you go drift fishing down one of Victoria's rivers. There is a company that will take you there. Eat, shop, and explore at this unique marine destination. This was a hidden gem we're glad we discovered. Paid parking is available. When I think of Fisherman's Wharf, my mind goes to Pier 39 in San Francisco or Pike's Place in Seattle. While the wharf is marketed as a special place to visit, there really wasn't much to see. There are a few very touristy restaurants that serve semi-decent food, but the best thing to see are the houseboats that line the dock. Keep in mind that people live there and there are signs warning you to provide them with privacy. The view from the dock was beautiful, but I can't say there's much to do or see here. I found Fishermen's Wharf to be intresting & odd. It's a scaled down version of Granville Island & even Pike Place Market in Seattle. I won't even mention San Fran as that's way more massive. I think I actually much rather prefer the whole Steveston Village & Wharf in Richmond, when comparing the two. Lots of colourful houseboats & a few restaurants here & that's it. If you're wanting to go out whale watching, this is where you catch your boat. It's kinda like having gone to Vegas for years & suddenly you end up going through Reno. It's like - what the heck!?! I think FW better serves the locals better than first time out of town visitors, who've been to & experienced massive fisherman wharfs the world over. I just did not get excited about it - put it that way. I was put off by the sign warning people to 'keep off' & away from the houseboats. Isn't this a tourist mecca? I'm not asking to walk into your houseboat, sit on your couch & start sipping tea with you! I just wanna check out the outside & marvel at the cool architecture & colours. That's it. Somethings missing & I can't quite put my finger on it. One point of note - in Vancouver you can take the Aquabus around False Creek for much cheaper than the $12 each way I paid for a 10min ride from outside the Empress Hotel to Fisherman's Wharf. This is a favourite wharf to come to for many who seem to get all giddy & has me wondering - have you travelled to other waterfront cities? But who am I to destroy ones happiness? TOURIST TRAP! This is one of the most overrated and overhyped tourist sites in the history of tourism. If you're not hungry, you probably won't need more than 30 minutes here, it's VERY small! But since you're in Victoria, you've probably heard about it, so you just have to see for yourself. The houseboats are cute and whimsical, but they are real private residences. There are some eateries around, The Fish Store is a good one. There were a couple shops charging high tourist prices. Some boating companies offering whale watching or paddleboarding, though it's quite cold especially if you fall in the water! Come here with low expectations, and come hungry. read more

Fisherman's Wharf is worth checking out if you're in Victoria for a weekend trip. Like all fisherman wharfs, it's a pier area where boats dock off from and to, and has businesses along the walkway. We visited fisherman's wharf for a few hours before our ferry back home. The fisherman's wharf area is southwest of the downtown Victoria area, so is easily walkable. It's also conveniently located right next to Belleville Terminal, which is where the Clipper is located. This fisherman's wharf area is small, especially compared to other fisherman wharfs in the country. There are houseboats here, along with other boats that are docked here and eateries to choose from, which primarily make up the businesses here. It's easy to just spend an hour or two here, mostly just to walk along the docks and get some grub. We visited on a Monday afternoon and it was busy, but not crowded. If you're visiting the Victoria area for the first time, then fisherman's wharf is worth seeing. read more

Fisherman's Wharf is a colorful mixed use community located walking distance midway between the Inner Harbour and the cruise terminals. This unique marine destination was the perfect way to end our day in Victoria. Loved wandering between cute shops and food kiosks, watching the water taxis, fishing vessels and yachts dock in the boat slips, seeing the cormorants and eagles soaring overhead as the harbor seals were begging for fish and oysters. The eastern end has a the most charming collection of float homes. Although these are not able to be rented, there is a floating B&B located in the "business district" of this quaint community. Several sweet and savory dining choices are available for a snack or meal. We opted for fish and chips from Barb's. Ranked #1 "Best Fish and Chips" for the past 35 years, the huge pieces of cod served with chips and coleslaw were delicious. The local halibut malu from The Fish Store was a great choice for soup. They also have "buck a shuck" for oysters from 4-5 daily. The mini donuts from Sweets were so cute. This is also a great place to book a kayaking excursion (which we have done on prior trips), go whale watching, or board a ferry to a neighboring city. read more

This is a really cute little area. Our cruise ship visited Victoria and we decided to walk around town. This wharf was just about a 10 minute walk from the cruise terminal. Our kids played on the nearby playground to get some energy out, and then we went down the hill to the "wharf" where we saw a number of fun restaurants. We boarded a water taxi right there and rode it to the center of town, and then walked all the way back to our cruise ship. We'd do it again. read more

This seems like a great place to live. Brightly colored little homes floating on the water under a deep blue sky with a constant stream of boats gliding by is a painting itself. Of course, these locals would have to put up with the likes of me: you know, the nosy tourist. My sympathies: we must really get on your nerves. It's more of 3.5 than 4 stars. I've been to Victoria several times and never knew this place existed so I was excited to check it out on my last visit. Knowing that it's more like a mini Granville Island, I dialed down my expectations so I wouldn't be disappointed. I enjoyed the water taxi ride from the Empress Hotel. The floating homes were actually more colorful and more accessible. I was going to eat at Barb's but a local suggested eating at the Fish store instead. While I didn't enjoy the halibut malu soup (kind of weird curry flavour) as much as I would have if it was a new england clam chowder, the battered fanny bay oysters were fresh and tasty. Since summer was winding down, the crowds were manageable and I really enjoyed a relaxing time there. Will probably visit again. read more

Fisherman's Wharf consisted of food court type food (overpriced and small portions of food) and beer. There are stalls for whale watching tours and kayaking experiences and gift shops with water themed knick knacks. There are boats around the wharf were one sold fresh lobsters and crabs. Most importantly there are privately owned homes that are colorfully decorated. I feel bad for them living here given all the tourist and voice, but then again, they know exactly where they're living in. That's pretty much it at this wharf. There really isn't much to do if you're not getting food. We spent about 15 minutes here walking around and leaving as we were not interested in the food nor were we going to watch whales and kayak. read more

This place feels like a tourist trap. Granted, there are a few rows of cute colorful houses floating near a dock. Other than that, you have ice cream, kayaking lessons, basic giftshops, and some overpriced fast casual food fronts. I didn't really see the hustle and bustle of a little fishing cove. Gayle and I took a long walk during a recent Saturday afternoon along Victoria's Inner Harbour. We first intended to follow a particular tour book suggestion that included a water taxi ride, but ended up staying on shore and carrying on. At the same time, we intently watched water-side activities which included a touristy pirate ship (arghhhh!) and a few cool float plane landings (without any pictures unfortunately). Once past Laurel Point Park (and near the Shoal Point Condos), we were surprised to see Fisherman's Wharf. Oy! I've lived in the Bay Area for over 25 years, have prided myself in avoiding the San Francisco Doppelganger and discouraging anyone who has asked about it, and now this? The Victoria version is a product of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority and no doubt a tourist/development effort that re-imagines old Oil Company-related docklands. You can't blame them for trying as this is prime real estate and the Jolly Old England Schtick can only go so far. Here's the Official come on: "Just around the corner from Victoria's Inner Harbour, Fisherman's Wharf is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. This unique marine destination offers food kiosks, unique shops and eco-tour adventures in a working harbour setting. Wander down the docks with your lunch, buy seafood fresh off the boat, check out the unique array of commercial, pleasure vessel and float home moorage, and watch the commercial fishing vessels unload their wares." Now if they could only wrangle an In-N-Out Burger, just like the SF Fisherman's Wharf has..... Actually, this place has potential. Compared to SF, it's smaller, a little more authentic, and with much less schlock (even considering the previously mentioned pirate vessel that docks here). There's some nice casual fish places here and there were even a few Sea Lions hanging out on the day we stopped by. You can also get here by water taxi, live in one of the cool looking house boats, and learn how to Kayak. Or once on land, it's very easy to get around almost anywhere on foot. read more

Came by Victoria via cruise ship so Fisherman's Wharf was on our way back. I only stopped by since I wanted to check out The Fish Store, but was surprised when I got to see a pair of seals! Since I didn't see any wildlife the whole cruise, this was a treat! The seals were adorable! I guess you can buy fish to feed them from The Fish Store, so I saw a bunch of parents buying fish so their kids could feed the seals. It was cute watching them bob their heads out of the water to grab the fish. Side note: There's no alcohol at Fisherman's Wharf which I find weird. Beautiful place to spend the afternoon. We arrived via water taxi which was great to see all the hydro planes taking off. Walk around, grab some ice cream, some seafood, and people watch. Always a must when I visit Victoria only once or twice a year. Sad the seals are gone (but I get it about humans feeding wildlife but they were so darn cute!) In the winter/spring, this place is pretty dead. In summer, it is JAM packed and the food line ups are long. Everyone we spoke with lived in Victoria and was at the Wharf for some good ice cream and to enjoy the sun. This place is what Victoria is all about: great food, live music, and stunning views. This is also where the floating homes are located. We loved walking down the rows of floating houses and taking it all in. One of the shops sells fish heads for $5. You feed them to spotted seals off the dock. It is such a great way to spend an afternoon! We decided on Mexican for lunch and the portion was huge. The seals and otters make this place what it is. -10+ places to get food -nice open space -we took a water taxi to the marina from across the way, so they can obviously also pick you up there, which is a fun thing to do, $6 Canadian each way, not bad for the novelty -a lot of good looking boats But in the end having seals to feed and otters to watch is amazing. The restaurant there at the wharf sells fish to feed them I was there on a Friday and was so impressed went back on Sunday. I saw the otters on Friday, but did not in Sunday. The tourist office is often my first stop when we pull into a new town to help me get an idea of the lay of the land. So, that's where we headed on Day 1 in Victoria. From there we jumped aboard a cute little tug boat (water taxi) located just below the office and for 5$/person we were taken to Fisherman's Wharf. The Wharf is lined with colourful houseboats, tempting eateries, and gift shops. If you are lucky you might also get to see some seals (especially if you have some morsals of fish on you). Once we had loaded up on fish and chips/sushi/ice cream we were ready for a walk. We began by checking out the different houseboat styles and eventually found ourselves on the "David Foster Harbour Pathway" which went along the sea wall and conveniently brought us back to the tourist office where we began. We missed getting to Fisherman's Wharf during a past February stay in Victoria. We made up for that loss during a recent stay, and walked there several times, enjoying the great views there 'and' along the way. From our hotel (Best Western Inner Harbour), Fisherman's Wharf was a rather short, and very scenic walk away -- whether done via neighbourhood streets, or alongside the water and harbour-sides of hotels, via the 'David Foster Harbour Pathway' - the latter, a wonderful walking path that starts in the downtown area of the Inner Harbour. We walked and enjoyed the great views along both routes a couple of times. It's a rather flat and lovely walk, whatever route is taken, and it's richly-rewarded with all wonderful sights and sounds of Fisherman's Wharf when you get there. On our early-am walks and visits to the area, most everything was closed, few people out & about, and it was very quiet and peaceful. We walked each of the several floats, catching the sights of the colourful houseboats (some quite "weird and wonderful" looking), storefront views of the restaurants, marinas, and such at those times, then returned at other later times to nibble and shop, when everything was open and alive with others doing much the same thing. We did a tasting of "buck-a-shuck" oysters at the 'Fish Store' during a walkabout one morning, and watched children throw food to the seals and otters from the nearby wharf. And returned another late-morning to browse and shop at '4 Winds West' (it had been closed on earlier visits to the Wharf, and we just had to get back and check out some of the lovely things viewed through the windows when the shop was closed -- it was sure worth the effort!). When first looking at street maps, we thought Fisherman's Wharf looked so far away, but found out it was not, and we sure enjoyed our walks and times spent there. read more

The oysters at the "Floating Fish House" were the largest, and I think, the best I've ever had. That may be a British Columbia thing; they were the first B.C. oysters I ever had too. But anyway I was very impressed, after years of what I now know to be tiny (post Deepwater Horizon) Gulf of Mexico oysters. I'll try some more Canadian Pacific oysters to see if it's the area or the restaurant. Cute place, though, with everything on the warf floating. Weather was absolutely perfect when we were there (in May) so that could have caused prejudice in favor of the place. But it was great. read more

Super cute but small. You can get great fish and chips, ice cream or Mexican. Then walk around the docks and see floating homes all decorated with a cool artistic touch. These people live here year round and love it. Most are willing to discuss why they love living here and how pricey it is. Several water tours take off from here and they have a H2O taxi that can give you a tour or take you to/from china town, down town, etc. it is a great way to get around. I think it is $5 bucks one way to get dropped off. You can walk but it saves a good 25 min. Don't be surprised to see seal lions swimming around the dock by the Mexican restaurant. read more

Like the Inner Harbor, Fisherman's Wharf is another must-go attraction for anyone visiting downtown Victoria! Believe or not, all including the walkway, the stands, and even the buildings are afloat on water. It's definitely an interesting sight and especially during sunset, a beautiful marvel to take in. Spend a few hours chilling on this wharf to enjoy live music and great food from awesome stands like Fish Store and Jackson's Ice cream! This will definitely be one of your highlights in your Victoria trip. Loved it. We went on a day that rained (supposedly this is very rare), but still had a blast. Not only was it relaxing, but my girlfriend and I loved spending a while looking at all the floating houses. Supposedly we saw a bed and breakfast as one of the floating houses..(i might take a look into getting one of those then next time we visit). I personally don't see any differences in fish n chips, but the atmosphere and the tradition of getting them here made the entire trip well worth it. read more

Disappointing! Only because I saw NO SEALS! Apparently, as of a few months ago, you are not allowed to feed them. That's what kept them there, so now the Seal watching is NO MORE. I looked at some houseboats with cheap tacky decor, ate lunch at a nice seafood shack on the boardwalk and called it a day. Water gorgeous, food great but really.....NO SEALS!?!? read more
