This is our go to spot when we're craving fried fish or shrimp. It's located in Hawthorne with a small parking lot shared with several businesses. The restaurant is always clean and service is always friendly. Prices, especially lunch specials, are very affordable. We've gotten the red snapper, catfish and shrimp po-boys. All were good but we noticed the catfish strips are very thin and small compared to what you get at the other Fishbone we've visited. This is now a local spot for me, and I'm glad it is! My dad's family is from southeast Texas, and getting a Louisiana southern style fish fry that is flavorful and consistent is not easy! My husband and I got the grilled combo this time, and I've gotten the fried once. Go with the fried shrimp if nothing else! The combos are where it's at. It isn't 5 stars because the quality of the snapper this time was not the same as the catfish last time. Also this time the roll was stale and last time was fresh. But the sides!! I recommend them all so far. Hush puppies, the greens (I add a little hot sauce in mine and these were good enough to drink the pot liquor yum), red beans and rice, veggie rice, all very solid. Nice people but gumbo wasn't up to par. Ordered take out but when I got home I was surprised to find the rice already mixed with the gumbo. So I'm sure you can imagine the dish was about 4/5 rice and 1/5 gumbo. Also rice was hard and grainy indicating it was either under cooked or day old. I've been to Fishbone before in Gardena and ordered a PoBoy. Fishbone don't have the best Poboys but it's ok. This time I went to Hawthorne. I ordered a fish dinner and when I opened it up it was full of hush puppies but three slithered pieces of fish. It looked like the took one filet and cut it up three times. I was so disappointed how small the pieces were. A toddler could of swallowed it whole. I spent $45 on bullshit. My macaroni salad was spoiled. I had Mac salad and fries on my order but the worker said we could only choose one so she gave me the Mac salad. I want to speak highly of business in urban areas but this was terrible. You can get fried or grilled seafood options that are made with a southern NOLA flair. They do have Monday lunch specials, and they're closed on Sundays. The red snapper was dry and tough to eat, the red beans and rice were okay, but not the best; it tasted like the red beans were not fresh (it had like a reheating flavor to them), and the potato salad was not my favorite; they tasted like store bought. Coming from a background of top-notch cooking skills and growing up on delicious meals, it's a real struggle to find excellent food in my hometown of Los Angeles. For almost $70 (for fish and shrimp) I expect a lot more. There was essentially no "meat" in on the catfish at all. Would NOT RECOMMEND ordering fish from here.
