Random adventure today. Drove through Cecilton Md to The Fish Whistle at the Grainery right along the Sassafras River. We sat outside, they had live music; "Rick Somers". He played hits from the 70's and early 80's. He was excellent. We ordered The Fish Whistle salad with Blackened Chicken. A cup of Cream of Crab soup and Chicken Quesadilla's. Wow! The food was very good, Rick Somers was Excellent, Our waitress was really good and helpful. There was no shortage of lump crab in the soup. Creamy, rich, just enough Old Bay and a hint of Sherry. The Salas was big. The Blackened Chicken had a Jerk flare. Very good. The Quesadilla's were delicious. I nice fresh Tex Mex dish with a bit of Easter shore flare. There is plenty of Parking, we sat right by the River and had a wonderful view. There is an extensive Drink and Draft menu as well. The Fish Whistle is a keeper. We found this on Yelp as we were traveling from DC to NJ. Reviews were positive & we were in an adventurous mood. It was a great find! The restaurant is a few miles from the freeway in a small town. It sits by the water next to a pier with small boats. It was Trivia Night so the bar was loud with locals enjoying the game. We were greeted warmly as we entered from the rain. We were then escorted to a dining hall & seated at a corner table with a view of a river & sunset! Seafood was the highlight of the menu. It was so fresh & made the dishes very delicious. Portions are big which suited us just right. We were hungry travelers. What we really enjoyed more than the delicious food was the chat with our server. She explained the special thoroughly so we could make good decisions. Every-time she checked in on us, she initiated conversation. It was so comforting & friendly. I've been patronizing this restaurant for years. The owner, Jeff, and his staff always treat my wife and I very well to ensure we have a pleasant experience. The food is always delicious and consistent. The service is good. The pricing structure is better than most water-view restaurants. The bartenders are awesome. Only came in for seat at the bar to get cocktails and apps. The bar was small (8 seats). Seemed like bartender knew people at the bar so this seems like a locals place. Menu had lots of food options. Nice cocktail menu. We ordered blood orange margarita (meh) and a Jameson crush (lots of juice and little Jameson - would skip this option). Apps were stuffed mission caps (short rib meat and seasonings) which were good. Also got the catfish nuggets ad they were super good. They serve small portion of slaw on the plate with them - ask for a side of this! It was great. Got piece of key lime pie to go as their desserts are made in house. Was just okay. Wouldn't order again. Did see someone with a brownie sundae that was HUGE! They did have some live music that might on the first level. Would return to try other things on menu. Have only been here three, mainly because it's a 40 minute drive, but it's really good. Have had a variety of their small plates and sandwiches and I'm always happy. Plus their drinks are well made. They need to open another fish whistle closer to Havre De Grace! read more

First meal great meal. Greeted by a very confident and competent server put us at ease right away, taking any order of bowl cream of crab vs a cup of crab so smoothly really sets a tone. Appetizers and soups came fast and were delicious, though I did greatly prefer the cream of crab. The crab guacamole surprised us with the generous serving. The crab on top did add more to the flavor profile than expected. The entrees took long enough for us to enjoy the sunset. The view from the lower floor was good, charming, and very comfortable. The vibe was family friendly outdoor. The live music was playing all the greatest hits at an unobtrusive volume. Crab cake sandwich satisfied. It was cooked well and the texture of the crunch with the bread and tomatoe all blended perfectly. I added some the 'slaw to mine and thought the tang blended well. The lemon fish entree was a little on the mild side but had no complaints, might try something else next time. Dessert was rice pudding and coconut cream pie. Get the pie! It was super flavorful and light, really complimented the summer outdoor vibes. Great location on the Sassafras......lots of options at one location.....finer dinning and a bar upstairs and more casual dinning on the first floor and outside. Not a bad seat for great views of the river. We opted to have dinner upstairs in the bar area and sampled a good number of options....jalapeño bacon wraps (awesome), cream of crab soup (could have used a bit more crab), jerk chicken skewers (great), beat salad (very good I'm told), and some of the best NY style cheesecake (also awesome)! read more

We liked this restaurant very much. We started out with the crab dip which was delicious!!! My husband had the Fish Whistle Lemon Butter (halibut) and I had the smoked salmon on rye bread. Both were great! The salmon is smoked on the premises and is wonderful! For dessert we had the regular and pistachio cheese cake which was creamy and delicious . We got the crab cakes, bourbon bbq ribs, jerk chicken skewers, blueberry mojitos, and for dessert the chocolate sugar cookie with mint chocolate chip ice cream. The crab cakes were delicious and the bourbon bbq ribs were solid. We'd pass on the jerk chicken skewers, they were kind of dry and small, and tasted of only oregano. Four of us went on a Wednesday night .. hour drive but wanted to try it .. used to go when it was the Granary . Food was excellent ... salads .. the halibut special was incredible as was the pork chop special .. cooked perfectly ! I ordered takeout from Fish Whistle as I was driving from South Carolina to Stamford, CT. I had never been here before, but since I literally drove across the Chesapeake Bay, I was craving a crab cake. I ordered Take Out crab cake sandwich with fries and a bowl of the cream of crab soup for my husband. Before I talk about my food, I want to position that this WAS take out and so I realize it's not a completely accurate representation of what this restaurant has to offer. I am leaving a review purely for those that are thinking about take out orders. do believe that sitting in the restaurant, it would have been better, so I will try that next time. For my to go order, my fries weren't seasoned and the crab cake was too small to fill the bun. The crabcake (by itself) was absolutely delicious and I will return and try sit down for that reason alone. Also notable is that the cream of crab soup held up perfectly in my cooler for the remainder of my drive (almost 4 hours) and my husband quite enjoyed it even after reheating. read more

Overall it was good, although I did feel the price portion pinch that plagues many establishments today - like seafood pasta having only 4 medium shrimp. Come on folks - do better than that. Yesterday was a beautiful day to situate near the water. My family and I love this restaurant and the food, especially the crab cakes which are to die for. We even hosted our daughters bridal party dinner in 2020. My son and I were out to celebrate his new job. Immediately on arrival, we received scowls upon entering the bar area, as we had asked for a hightop to view the marina. Our waitress was rude. There is no other way to describe her. We were a little over dressed just leaving church and clearly looked out of place and honestly had wondered if we were being judged? She barely spoke two words and responded to my questions without the details I needed. When ordering an appetizer, she later came back and said, "we are out." she walked away. BUT left it on our bill, which wasn't the big deal here. The problem is her, her service, and how she represents the business she works at. If you don't want to work, don't show up. WE will go back because we LOVE the food, but please review with your staff why they are working there in the first place. My son and I left. We ran into some waitresses giggling and they were just delightful. This is how you want your restaurant represented, a place to go to leave all the worries of the world behind. We sat downstairs with a limited menu. The view was awesome and service was good - but not great. Prime rib was over cooked, order was not correct for 3 out of 4 diners. If you're looking for bar food and drinks then downstairs is the place. For better dining and conversations we should have tried the dining room. We will give it another shot! read more

Went here for lunch and when my crabcake sandwich was delivered I flipped the bun over to find green MOLD spots on it. Disgusting. Our waitress would not come over even though we were motioning to her. So I got up and took the bun to the manager out front. Her response was "Oh". Very customer service oriented here lol. No one came to apologize. They did take it off the bill, but with the mold nasty and lack of customer service I'd never return! Went for Valentine dinner with the wife. My meal was good but my wife's meal was fish and she didn't eat much because it tasted bad. The worst part was the temperature, it was cold and a lot of the patrons ate with their jackets on to keep warm. Management certainly doesn't care about the comfort of their guests. read more

We had a fabulous lunch at the newly opened Fish Whistle a month or so ago. We went to the Chestertown location a handful of times last summer, but we encountered some issues there (i.e. hush puppies not cooked all the way, meatloaf taking forever to be served, etc.). We didn't run into any of those problems here. I went for the hush puppies again and they were cooked perfectly. I also got a grilled chicken sandwich that was really good. Our whole group enjoyed their food and the service was great. Our only complaint was that it was icy cold in there but they turned the fans off above our table so it warmed up after that. Delicious food and an accommodating and attentive staff. You can't believe the crab cakes - absolute heaven on a fork. Great local beer selection. It came with homemade tortillas chips which were also good. I ordered the fresh fish which was also Rockfish, topped with lump crab meat and their signature lemon butter sauce. It came with mashed potatoes and broccoli. It was a clear 10 out of 10!! The fish was cooked perfectly. It was my first time having Rockfish and it might possibly be my new favorite. It's a mild sweet fish with nutty undertones. I learned that Rockfish, also known as Stripped Bass, are indicative of the Chesapeake Bay and rivers off the bay. We also tried the crab cake which was very good and free of fillers. We were looking for a new place to try other than Baltimore, North East Or Chesapeake City and we were very pleased. Stopped in with a party of 6 adults and 3 children. Reserved table ready in a lovely room. Attentive personable waitress...Down hill from there...NO children s menu,but they will adjust meals. BUT there is only 1 cheese so if you choose grilled cheese or Mac n Cheese it may not be to their liking. Also drinks cups we are out of lids. After selecting drinks choices we wait and wait. They came now some were ordered w/o sugar. Rest sweet,but bar made no effort to designated the sweet so we sipped and swapped drinks around 6 people until everyone got the correct tea. Disgusting. When no food arrived and kids got restless I ask for 2 baskets of bread...also WAITED forever...They finally arrived. now @ $2.50 a basket would you expect more than a smallish to medium small roll cut into 6 wafer thin slices? We just laughed and laughed. Ordered 2 appetizers for table crab dip arrived with 2--2 hot dog length pretzel rolls even for 2 people insufficient yet plenty of good hot crab dip..Go Figure....Loaded French Fries were OK nothing special. Wait staff slow to No to offer refills. Entrees ....Ummm well the Caesar Salad with upgrade ($6.50) add chicken it arrived with 2 McD size Chicken nuggets I kid you not. Again another laugh went round. While. The Chicken fingers for kids were HUGE and the grilled cheese was oddly cooked. Looked like open face cheese grilled then slapped together since cheese inside was browned and bubbly. My salad was to come with Yellow Beets! So looked forward to that. After digging around I found 1 see thru wafer thin beet slice cut in half. The Silver lining was my ($12.00) upgrade steak was lovely and the Crabmeat on salad was generous. Our bill for 3 people ,2 appetizers 1 bread basket 2 ice tea 1 beer 2 salads and a Jambalaya w tip was over $150.00.
