I'm beginning to lose my faith in good places to eat. This place used to be so good but, maybe it's what I ordered, or didn't order. As I was browsing the menu a customer was picking up 3 clam chowders. So, I thought and had a taste for creamy clam chowder. Excitedly I order. I get the salmon plate. Trying to eat healthier I opted for coleslaw instead of fries. I originally ordered a clam chowder on the side but the cashier said you can get it as one of your sides. Alright cool. I can't wait to get home. I have it planned out. I'm gonna eat the creamy clam chowder first and then the salmon and slaw a little bit later. I opened the bag to this tiny container and the soup in a brown paper bag. I opened the brown paper bag salivating thinking I'm about to have some delicious CREAMY CLAM CHOWDER. Only to find a tomato base looking soup with fish, vegetables and grease. Not again. I call and the guy says it's not New England clam chowder but manhattan clam chowder. I don't remember reading that all I seen was clam chowder. So I could wring in my frustration of not getting what I wanted. So if you're looking for creamy clam chowder you won't get it from here. The tartar sauce tastes like motor oil and the coleslaw is bland and not very tasty. It should actually be free and automatically included with the meal. The fish had no flavor whatsoever. You get a decent sized piece of fish. Will I ever go back...heck no! I should have just went to get an oxtail plate from Boukas for the same $30 I spent on this disappointing meal. It's decent food at best, and for the price you can find much better around town. I thought it was ridiculous they didn't have a bathroom for paying customers. The cashier directed me to go to the synagogue next door but it was closed. Reason I bring this up is I used to come to this restaurant all the time years ago and know that they have a restroom, however it seems now that spending $80+ doesn't entitle you to its use. Apart from that I felt the customer service wasn't good, certainly not warm or inviting, rather the opposite: cold and almost unwelcoming. I also saw employees eating in the front (one with his hands) which is not a great look. So expensive food leaving you dissatisfied, poor customer service and accommodations. Fantastic Fresh fish cooked on charcoal for under thirty dollars with fresh baked potatoe or rice and a huge salad. But the kicker for me where else can you get a salmon steak? Yes you have to be careful with the bones I would not let a child eat it but for them and you who do not like your hands getting fish oil on them you can get salmon filet but to get the heart oils and the taste you cannot beat fish on the bone. There are several detailed poor reviews about this restaurant. They are all well-deserved. Overpriced, terrible food. Hubs ordered the fish n chips, which was snapper, not cod, also not the traditional beer batter. It sits atop a pile of fries that are obviously frozen, undercooked, and came virtually cold, as did the fish (we had to wait a long time for our food even though the place was not busy at all). I ordered the fish sandwich and a side of Manhattan chowder. My mistake, the assumed that the soup would have clams in it, but it was snapper (once again: my sandwich was snapper as well) and it was oily, ugh! The fish sandwich was OK, not knock-your-socks-off delicious but OK. It was the best thing out of everything we ordered. I give this place one extra star for the fish sandwich. The "service" is nonexistent, you have to get your own food, and there are no bathrooms for customers to use! Need I say more? I heard great reviews about Fish Grill and decided to try it out today for my birthday. What a mistake! I was craving fish n chips but before I ordered online, I called the location and asked if the order comes with fried. Hence, the name fish AND chips. I spoke with someone who answered and asked them if the fish and chips come with fries. He said YES. He also went on and said you pick 2 sides. When I went to go pick up my order and came home and opened it he box, there were no fries. I called the location and told them that my order was missing fries. I ordered fish AND chips. The employee lacked customer service. I spoke with the manger, Marlin. He was not very helpful and lacked customer service. He said he will have the owner call me to resolve the issue. I am still waiting to hear back. Also, Fish and Chips is typically Cod not red snapper. The 2 pieces of fish was overalls breaded but not with your typical fish and chips batter. This was more of a breading and it had no flavor and was over fried. I really hoped I was going to like this place. I am giving the owner the opportunity to contact me. THE best take out lunch ever--on this side of town. I work nearby, and my colleagues highly suggested Fish Grill. I ordered the grilled salmon with rice and cole slaw, and boy, it did not disappoint! The fish was grilled to perfection, rice was fluffy and fresh, and the cole slaw was crisp and not to sweet. I would definitely order this combo again. THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE EATERY ON BEVERLY NEAR LA BREA, NOT "FAIRFAX". --- I was disappointed by this place. I saw their storefront that had a blue awning with the name in white letters. I went online and read what limited info was there, and checked out the menu. There is much that the Website didn't say, almost all of it bad, and there's a "deal-breaker" that makes me not want to return. --- I don't know what type of eatery this place is supposed to be, and they don't seem to know either. I can't call it a "restaurant" or a "fast-food place" because it isn't totally either one, but has elements of both. Because I was expecting this to be a restaurant (an eatery where [1] you sit down at a table and are given a menu, and a server takes your order, and [2] you eat off of dinnerware plates or bowls instead of paper, plastic or Styrofoam, and use metal silverware), I was negatively surprised. I wanted to order my food at my table from a server, and use dinnerware and silverware that were already there or would be brought to the table. Instead, here, you order from a counter, get a table, and then they call a number that's on your receipt (they don't tell you that) and you're supposed to get up and go get your food. I "didn't move fast enough," so one of the staff brought my food to me. But there was no silverware or napkins on the table, and he didn't bring any with the food. So I had to ask for them -- a fork, knife & spoon -- and he only brought me the knife & fork, so I had to re-ask for the spoon. These utensils were plastic and individually inside plastic wrappers. I didn't want to be eating with plastic utensils, but I also didn't want to have to do work in order to be able to use them. And it was double work, because the wrappers were hard to open. --- But the overriding aspect here is the environment, not the food or the almost-nonexistent service. It turns out that the adjacent "storefront" is also part of this eatery, but that storefront has no front wall to seal it off from the outside, so a steady wind of polluted 95-degree air came into it from outside. The two rooms are separated by a glass partition with a door in the middle, which is propped open, so the hot, dirty wind blows into the main room too, and brings flies in addition to the unpleasant air. I didn't enjoy the hot dirty wind blowing on me, but I also did not enjoy having to shoo flies away from my food so that I could eat it. This is what makes me not want to return. --- The staff mixture is weird. This is a Kosher Jewish place, and about half of them are Jewish while the other half are Hispanics, who in all likelihood are not Kosher Jews. I saw no synergy between the two groups. It seemed like the Jewish guys managed the place and took orders, while the Hispanics did the cooking, cleaning and serving. The Jewish guys weren't big on smiling or showing "customer service joy"; the one who took my order never smiled or seemed glad that I stopped by. --- The beverage situation was ridiculous. "Soft drinks" is listed on the overhead menu, but this turns out to be a selection of bottles in a refrigerated case, not the usual fountain machine. As a diabetic, my "go-to" drink is unsweetened black iced tea, which I sweeten with artificial sweetener. They do not offer such tea; all choices were either sweet or else sugar-free but with artificial sweetener already mixed in at the time of production (which makes for bad-tasting drinks). I played it loose and ordered one of the sweetened teas, so as to have something that tasted good to go with my food. I asked for a glass of ice to go with the bottle of flavored tea, and they said they don't have ice. Hunh??? Unbelievable. What eatery does not have ice? And why would you not have it? --- The food was okay, not great. The list of fish included both "Trout" and "Red Trout", in addition to whitefish and salmon. I had never heard of "Red Trout" before, and asked how it was different from regular trout. The guy said he didn't know, and turned to ask a cook. The cook said they were out of it. So I decided to order the whitefish, and they said they were out of that too. So I settled on the plan trout. It turned out to be a whole trout (which aren't very thick), skin-on, "butterflied" and grilled. It wasn't flavored much with seasonings. --- The french fries were mediocre. They were the shoestring kind, almost surely frozen, and had an odd semi-hard exterior, with an interior that wasn't really very pulpy. A "bite" of fries would be 3 of them, but when I tried to stab a trio of them with the plastic fork, the fork's tines had a hard time piercing them, and bent to the side. --- I chose "rice pilaf" as my 2nd side, but it was really a spicy rice. It tasted OK, but was a bit too spicy for me. --- I may return just to try the fish 'n' chips, because I'm curious as to how good it is. read more

A great hole in the wall kosher lunch joint! We walked in and the smiling face at the counter was running around like a chicken with his head cut off. He was alone taking orders and the line was long. When I got to the counter, I was greeted with a big smile and an apology! He said his co-worker was over an hour late so he was all alone. He still smiled and took everyone's order and took it all in stride. I didn't get his name but he's in the picture below. This is the type of person all owners want on their team. I had the grilled fish tacos with rice and the Israeli salad. The fish was light and buttery and the the slaw and sauce were not overpowering. I came across Fish Grill on Beverly because I worked in the area back in 2007. My boss ordered lunch for everyone in the office and I must say that I've been hooked ever since. My experience is always good here. I do alot of phone orders from this Fish Grill on Beverly and they have NEVER disappointed me. Every time I've order the food was ready in 15 or 20mins and hot. My go to meal in the beginning was grilled salmon fillet w/double French fries. Then I wanted 2 try something a little different so I tried the grilled salmon fillet w/rice pilaf, cold slaw, and a side of grilled zucchini. Then I went on 2 try the salmon w/angel hair pasta, next was the fish tacos. My son likes the trout and red trout w/double French fries. So I give this place 5stars because the food is always fresh and hot, and ready in 15-20mins. read more

I was not pleased with my meal this time, as I've come here in times past. There were so many flies in their establishment; totally unacceptable! You had to fight off the flies to even be able to eat your food. My ORDER: I got salmon, fries, and salad. The only thing that was good on my plate was the salmon. The fries were way over cooked, to the point they were CHIPS, the salad was extremely dry. I don't know what happen on this visit but they need to do better! I ordered the trout grilled specialty, which comes with two sides of your choosing (coleslaw, green salad, rice pilaf, brown rice, french fries, baked potatoes, or Israeli salad). I chose the green salad and the baked potato. The green salad comes with tomatoes, onions, and carrots and was okay. The baked potato was plain and came with the blandest butter I have ever tasted (is this what unsalted butter tastes like?). The trout came with lemon and your not-so-typical-tasting tartar sauce (not impressed). I don't always like the taste of cooked fish. I've had a couple of terrible experiences i.e. places cooking it too dry, fish that went bad, or just bad flavored in general. As of late, I've been trying fish grill restaurants and they are a semi unique, where it can almost be categorized as fast food, but not quite. At these fish grill places, you enter and order and pay at the front. Then you find a table and sometimes they will bring the food to you. Other times, you just have to get it at the counter. There is usually an area with condiments (i.e. Vinegar, Hot sauce...) napkins, utensils, etc. It's McDonalds classier sister, like Daphne's style. Anyway. There are a couple things I would order on the menu here. I think if you came here to be healthy and lose weight, your best bet would be to stick to the fish plates, and to get 2(included) sides of salad and coleslaw. The coleslaw is really a must. I'm not a fan of the super mayonaissey coleslaws at other chains but this one is a little more watered down and tastes a little more crisp and refreshing. I like things that are watered down. If you don't really care about your waist size but still want to eat rather healthy, I'd say go for the fish tacos. They are quite large. The fries are also quite delicious and fresh. You probably also want to order a drink if drinking water from the faucet isn't your thing. The inside is cute and almost makes you think you are at the beach or something a little more coastal. $9-10 bucks gets you an entree. read more

Damn, that was one torrid week of fish-eating. Somehow I kept finding myself at Fish Grill for three meals in less than 48 hours. Feeling a little woozy---out of control even. Would I order different stuff? Would we fall into the same old habits and positions we know? No, damnit, no! Then I lost control. I tried the fries. They were even better than I wanted them to be. They don't even need ketchup-----but ooh, thanks, FG, for using that sweet and tangy condiment. I tried the red trout----so young and fleshy, was this even legal? No time for questions like that. But just to appear above-board, the next time I tried the more mature salmon filet . It was good in a familiar yet still individual way. It smoldered, I quivered. That's it. I can talk about it now. Ended up at Fish Grill on accident the other night but what a great accident it was! The location is great for COVID times with pretty much all outdoor seating naturally. I got my food to go but the patio had a decent amount of people on it (safely spaced apart). Anyway whatever they put on this fish to make it so flavorful I do not know but the Sea Bass and the Salmon Filet were both amazing! So fresh and flavorful! It was lite but surprisingly filling after you got your sides. The prices were a tiny bit high to me but if you consider how flavorful everything was I'd pay it again! The food was not good especially for the price of the meal. Their fish was dry and didn't seem like there was enough seasoning. They provide a slice of lemon but that's not enough to give the fish flavor. Their rice pilaf was just ok. The best thing out of the seafood plate was the zucchini, grilled and seasoned to perfection. I was comparing this place more to California fish grill and California fish grill is way better. They also did not have water. If you wanted a cup of water, you would be drinking faucet/sink water which can be gross. I would not recommend coming back here. read more
