I have never had an opportunity to go on the waterway and found out about it on Reddit. I happened to get the last two spots for one of the last tours of the year and it was easy. My kid had a great time and I did too. Learned a lot and the sailing was smooth!

I went with 7 friends, you enter at Gate 8 off of Clinton Drive, just tell the security guard you are there for the tour. There is a nice plaza to wait at right next to the boats. The parking lot is safe; let's face it, the only folks getting in have to pass security! A bit before 10 am one of the employees came out to check everyone in and handed out bottles of cold water which was great as it was almost 90 degrees outside in full sunlight. We boarded and were asked to sit inside while they got underway. One of the shipmates gave a safety talk and then we were free to go outside. The boat moves along at a pretty good pace, every now and then it slows for tug boat traffic. You get to see the industries that are along the ship channel. There are lots of big ships and also small ones. Some are loading or unloading, others are being repaired or a clean coat of paint. The shipmates serve coffee for the adults on the way and after turning around after about 45 minutes they offer cold water and soft drinks. There are so many photo opportunities so take lots of pictures. You are asked to go inside while they secure to the dock, the air conditioning feels great. Then you are on your way. The entire crew was so nice, they were helpful and friendly and could answer questions. Please, if you plan to take children, keep them under control. While not dangerous, there are things to watch for so you don't trip and the doors for the cabin are very heavy and hard to open and shut quickly so a child could easily get hurt. I took a mix of infrared and visible spectrums photographs

As a first time visitor, it was the…read moreperfect way to get oriented and really learn about the city instead of just attending my conference. Ben, our guide, was fantastic -- a true local who clearly loves his hometown. His narration on Houston's architecture, history, and hidden details made the skyline come alive. You could feel the hometown pride in every story he shared. It wasn't just facts -- it was personality, context, and connection. Huge shoutout to Yolanda as well for keeping us safe while navigating all over the city. Houston traffic is no joke, and she handled it like a pro. There are only two hop-off stops -- the Aquarium and Sam Houston Park -- so if you're looking for a fully flexible hop-on-hop-off experience, this isn't that. But honestly, it's a great overview tour and a really efficient way to see and understand Houston in a short amount of time. If you want a solid introduction to the city with knowledgeable locals leading the way, this is a great choice! Support this family owned business.

I absolutely loved this tour experience! I did the downtown tour for my birthday and I'm so happy I…read moredid. It was so much fun, we had a wide selection of foods, and the guide, Christine, was great. She was sweet, down to earth, and knowledgeable. It's definitely a good amount of food. I was so stuffed by the end I couldn't finish certain dishes. I really liked 6 out of 8 of the dishes which I think is a good proportion considering everything was a surprise. We went to 4 different restaurants. I think everyone's least favorite was the last dessert, but it was okay because we had so much yummy food before then. I highly recommend the tour! The walking was nice since we were eating so much. You also get a little history tour as you walk. It wasn't too much walking so I think it's suitable for older adults and kids (I heard some of the other locations are more walking so be sure to ask if you're concerned). It's a little pricier than some similar tours I found ($70/pp), but they were much more responsive and easier to plan with compared to other places.

Always looking to do something unique when visiting Houston so made my friends take this "Houston,…read moreWe Have a Tunnel" tour with me and we all liked it. We met at the Cafe Express on corner of Capitol and Main and then started the tour in an old bank building (now occupied by Chase). Note, lots of people came late to the tour, we waited 15 minutes to start but then left so it is important to show up on time. The Chase building is gorgeous and has a beautiful Art Deco interior. There are eight frescos near the ceiling when you walk in and they depict the history of Houston. After that, you go down into the tunnels. Michael our tour guide was very informative and personable and we got a primer on the history and facts about the tunnels. There are over 8 miles of tunnels connecting buildings downtown! Maybe that is why you don't see anybody on the streets of the 4th largest city in America! We went from building to building underground and then came up from time to time, learning particular facts about the buildings, the topography and the architecture along the way. We took a break after about an hour and got free cookies at a store in the lower level of the Pennzoil building called Michael's cookies. (No relation to our tour guide) I love infrastructure so for me, this was an awesome experience. The tunnels in Houston are functional and there are lots of places to eat, but it is not like the underground networks in Toronto and Montreal that are kind of like subterranean malls. My friends who went with me aren't quite as nerdy as I am, but they enjoyed it too. The tour lasts about two hours and I feel it was two hours well spent. I would recommend doing this in the morning and then doing a Buffalo Bayou Cistern tour in the afternoon to get your fill of underground Houston.
