I have lived in my house now for almost 2 years and have never had an issue until the company decided to drain our pool without notice and when we tried to call them (for 2 weeks) no one called us back. We had to go on line and find out who the manager was and even when we spoke to him, he didn't even know what was going on. I understand that COVID has made things difficult, but this was ridiculous! We had several issues with the maintenance group. 1) Took over a year and 5 flooded basements to get a plumbing issue resolved. When finally addressed FirstKey said compensation would be discussed for our hassle and property damage. Nothing has been done. 2) Took 3 months to get a sidewalk repair done that was causing a tripping hazard. 3) It has been a month and a half since we reported a hole in garage roof and no repair completed 4) Bricks falling from the chimney. A month and a half has gone by since it was reported, no response. 5) Electricity issue. Kitchen, living room, 2nd floor all on same circuit breaker. Reported the issue and took 4 months to have it addressed. Was not able to fully use kitchen without having the circuit breaker trip. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. Incredibly slow and huge delays in hearing back about rental houses. Literally waited two weeks to process paperwork. We waited for a house after being told we were first in-line and just waiting for background check, etc. We were told to be patient due to Covid. spoke to someone else 2 weeks later after sitting on hold for 45 minutes for them to tell us they gave the house away to someone else. But they kept our application fees saying it's "non-refundable". And our credit scores are excellent so no issues would have caused us to not be approved for the house. Go elsewhere read more

Well I've been renting for almost a year with this company. Will not be renewing my lease though. Last month my A/C was out for nearly two weeks. Their solution was 1 portable a/c unit that barely could cool one room to below 85 degrees. Now I've been waiting for several weeks for them to repair my built in microwave. Also my pool has been a swamp for a month now. I pay for pool service and am billed monthly included with my rent. Here I am in the hottest months of the year and unable to use my pool. Literally can't see the first step. Also they are adding HOA violation fees for vehicles parked on the street..... not my vehicles. Mine are in my driveway and garage. I've told the management company that they are not my vehicles yet they are still trying to charge me for some random people parking there. I've never had so many issues and such a lack of care to correct. If I don't have remedy to all these issues soon I'm afraid I'll have to take legal action, terminate the lease and move. read more

We are counting the days until our lease is up!! (I would give zero stars if it were an option) The first issue we had was was when we moved into the property in September and found that the refrigerator would not cool below 60 degrees, I placed a work order that Monday and received a visit from the maintenance person to analyze on that Wednesday. On Thursday I was informed that he would be getting a new refrigerator for the unit and it would be delivered on 10/3. On 10/3 we were then were told that the refrigerator was on back order and would not be available for several weeks. I was in contact with the maintenance tech who was then able to work with Home Depot and get a different model delivered on 10/5 which meant we were without any source of ability to keep perishable foods in the home for two weeks. However, the old refrigerator was not removed and sat in the dining room until the very end October. The second issue was in November when the heater was not working properly and there was no heat on the second floor (there are 3 stories). I put in a request on 11/12 and it took nearly a week for any type of response and an appointment for the HVAC contractor was finally made to look come out and look into the issue. They determined that a part was needed and it fell on me (the resident) to reach out to them and follow up until the issue was finally resolved and fixed in mid to late December. Again we have an issue with the heating and I put in an Urgent request last Friday as the heater is only blowing cool air and the temperature of the home was not going above 60 degrees. This morning since I had not heard anything nor been contacted by anyone regarding this issue, I called the maintenance phone number to see what the status was and was informed it had been referred to the HVAC contractor and that I (the resident) needed to follow up with them. read more

I was a LOYAL tenant for almost 5 years. The last year I was having plumbing issues causing over 3k of water bills to the city of Phoenix. The maintenance guy didn't fix it the first time then told me to fix it myself because he was too lazy to bend over and fix the plumping outside. I had 3 or 4 service request for the same thing over 4-6 months and had to wait just as long to get a credit back for paying all that water. The last year I decided to purchase a home because I did not want to deal with the property management anymore as well as my rent going up to almost 2 thousand dollars. I also had both the pre move out inspection and the move out inspection and STILL was charged for things that wasn't even noted on the inspections. Save yourself the hassle and find another company, this place just buys homes and barely fixes them to make money off honest people just trying to find a place to live. I was more mad that I was there for so long and they treated me like crap after sending multiple emails for proof etc. I should've honestly contacted my personal attorney but I wanted to give them a chance. I didn't even get half of my deposit back but I do not want to deal with the company AT ALL. Beware. Also, if you live there and will be moving out make sure to hassle them until they respond because they will say you didn't give notice so keep all written and verbal communication saved just in case. They also change property managers so much they don't even know who's in charge of what or what has been processed. Please do better and hire knowledgeable people to manage your properties. This was a sad exit to a place I actually enjoyed living in for so long but you ruined it for me. read more

I have not had much interaction with the office staff but they seemed helpful. I called the maintenance number at 8am by 1030 my issue was fixed. I did not mark it as an emergency since we could still go in and out through the garage. The app scheduled an appointment for 10/21 and I was okay with that. To my surprise, I got a call early this morning setting up an appointment to come out this morning. Montrel notified me ahead of time that he was on his way and showed up on time. Now you say come on .99 cents. Its not the money that is the least of my problems, I can't stand when a company just uses you for a cash grab. Why should I pay them to look at their house. Maybe they should pay me! Here are the stats on this joint. Its been on the market for 45 days with 115 contacts not one app on the joint. These people do NOTHING to assist once they get your money. If you have to rent a house or apt. Do yourself a favor and do not rent from First Key. The portal charges a fee to pay your rent, if you pay, say on the 25th and rent is due on the 1st, on the 27th they will send you a bill for the State tax, and then charge another fee when you make that payment. You CAN NOT EVER get ahold of a human being to have any communication except if you have an emergency. When your AC goes out, they do call back eventually when you put in for emergency service, however, I was LIED to repeatedly and had to raise holy heck to finally get service. I can't wait 'till my lease is up so I can get out. I actually like the house, so it's kinda sad. Its already a hassle working with a property management company, but to deal with a property management company who is unreasonable and unresponsive, even worse. A few months ago, we received a warning from the HOA that our trash cans were out early before trash day. It was to our surprise that we were in an HOA because nothing in the initial house listing or throughout our application process was it mentioned that we were in an HOA, so we can follow the rules. So we had no idea we were breaking the rules because again, no one informed us. How does First Key homes resolve this issue? By charging us a non-compliance fee violation because we did not follow the rules of the HOA, that we did not know about. So they are charging us for not following the rules that we did not know, makes sense right? Again and again they tell me, "well its in our lease to follow the rules...", but how were we to know about the rules if we were not properly informed so this could have been prevented. And forget trying to talk to the property manger, Erica Martinez. She has ignored my phone calls and my emails for weeks now about the situation. Again, if the company properly informed us of the HOA rules to begin with, this situation wouldn't of happened, and I would understand why we were to be charged. RENTER BEWARE - As all the other reviews state this place cashes your check and throws you to the left! My mom applied for a rental home with these ppl. She has awesome credit etc. my eldest brother was required to be put on the lease and my mother was very honest about his past financial issues and disclosed of it on the application although she clearly state she was responsible for payment. The application in fact asks about bankruptcy and when it was discharged. She was told with her income it wouldn't be an issue. Alas she was declined due to my brothers bankruptcy. They KNEW this was automatically going to be declined by the owner and they took her 70$ anyway. Not only that they were so pleasant during the application process and said they follow up with her to completion. She had to go online to check her status to find she was declined. They dropped her like a hot potato. So, she called a "Melissa? Melissa said they'd consider her IF she can pay the years rent. HA How rude and condescending? Then they call and say good news your client is approved, bad news we already leased that home but here are a few others. DO NOT USE First Key homes! We were assigned Nancy Chellin (who as you see from other reviews has been named specifically and has quite the negative reputation) as our agent. We enthusiastically applied for a rental home and got it filled out perfectly and in on a Friday right after the home became available to rent. The application fee is $49 per person, so a HEFTY $98 for both me and my husband to apply. There is no way of knowing how many applications were before us, so we felt we would have a good chance of getting the property. We kept getting Autobot emails saying our card was charged/payment completed, next steps in the process (which we already applied) etc. I got an email that Nancy Chellin being assigned to us, so I kindly emailed her back with a greeting and inquiry as to where we were at in the application process. I received a nasty email back from her saying: "It's the weekend.  I'll respond to your email on Monday." Ummmm What? Don't realtors work on the weekend? Time is of the essence and we needed to find out when we could move in to this house. Monday arrived and we got an Autobot email that said "our application was approved but the house is NO LONGER AVAILABLE!" I immediately called Nancy and no answer. Then her voicemail was FULL and couldn't leave a message. My husband called corporate and complained and asked that we get a refund on our application fees because their system is seriously FLAWED. My house got flooded from a bad storm, called emergency serves, the maintenance worker didn't even tell the actual team about the water damage 4 days go to by my house is covered in carpet with mold in it. I'm pregnant and two small children live here. The people they have coming to replace it are a no call no show. Now we are two weeks in and still nothing. My daughter is sick and did I mention I'm pregnant living with mold. Also we pay $1900 to have slum landlords who don't care about their property or the people in the home. Do not rent from this company. Reading through these reviews I absolutely feel all of your frustration. We moved in the 18th of December. The onboarding was great! Melissa was amazing and had great customer service skills! I'm a single mom of 5 and moving is rough to say the least! We finally move into the home the 23rd of December. We notice that the sink in the guest bathroom is not draining and the sink in the master bathroom is leaking. I put in a work order. It's now Christmas time and my son is home from school so hes home for the plumber to come in and do work. A maintenance man that works for first key is sent out on the 28th and deduces that the plumbing needs to be fixed by a professional plumber. At this time the toilets start to backup. So I wait for the vendor to contact me. By January 4th theres no call from the vendor. Now we have sewage backing up into our showers and both toilets are clogged. This equals NO WORKING BATHROOMS FOR 6 PEOPLE!!! I email Jessica Flores and let her know, she gets the vendor to call us and come out. They come out and do absolutely nothing. They tell my son they have to get permission to do the work. I dont hear from them again until I once again email Jessica. They call, come out and cut a whole in the wall above the toilet. This allows the toilet to work for maybe 3 days 50% of the time. We are still seeing sewage backup in the showers. We are now sitting at January 18th and we have not been able to live in the home. More emails are exchanged. I ask for a rent credit to be applied. Jessica stops answering my emails. I put in a message to corporate and instead of an answer I get a phone call from Susanna Perez. Apparently the dates are wrong on our lease. She sends over an addendum to be signed. The addendum states on line 2 "Resident acknowledges and agrees to pay any additional fees discussed by representative of First Key homesLLC and listed resident for subjected change in household" WOULD ANYBODY SIGN THIS? Theres nothing else explaining whether fees are being charged or not. That leaves me open to any amount they feel like charging at any time! Susanna insists she can not change the addendum or add to it to make me comfortable in signing. I ask her to direct me to someone in corporate who can help me. She also asks about the rent credit and I explain what it is I would like. After this email she does not reply on the matter. The plumbers have been out to put in a new pipe. I have 1 toilet still leaking, a demoed bathroom, and 1 shower with no hot water. This was a HORRIBLE experience and they DO NOT care about their tenants. 5 kids with no bathroom and sewage coming up through drains. Deplorable. read more

Honestly, the worst rental services I have ever received. Completely unhelpful and just want to take your money. Tried getting preapproved and kept saying it would take 2 weeks...fast forward 2 weeks and called and they said it would take ANOTHER 2 weeks. Kept updating my paystubs like they said I should and still not preapproved. I went through another rental company and got my application pre approved within 48 hours. Talked to Brittany through firstkeys and she was rude and unprofessional. It's like she didn't know what she was talking about. Talked to Melissa though first keys (when she actually answered the phone) and she kept telling us different timelines every time. Do not use this company to rent. My Fiancé and I moved in our house with FirstKey homes just over a year ago and let me just say, it has been nothing but problems since the very beginning. Their level of service is so poor that it is baffling! The online resident portal is supposed to be the place where you submit maintenance requests, update payment info, etc. and it is by far the worst online service platform I have ever experienced in the last decade. It literally looks like some software from the early 2000's. They'll charge late fees after you've already paid rent on time, waive them for their "One time only waiver" and then do the same thing next month and tell you that you have to pay $100 for their own mistake. The customer service rep would not connect me to a manager, probably because they don't have one. This company is so cheap they closed the doors to their office in Phoenix so they could cut costs and hire out cheap call center reps who read off a script and lack basic problem solving skills. If you're reading this and trying to decide if you should rent one of their homes, do yourself a huge favor and just don't do it. read more

We recently purchased our home (5/2022) and we rented a lovely property with Firstkey for 3.5 years without incident. I actually wrote a glowing review about six months ago but if I could give FirstKey 0 stars I would!! I followed the instructions to the "T" in the moveout manual emailed to me. My husband and I lived there alone and I consider us to be fairly neat. I even hired a professional cleaning company to clean the areas we may have missed. I constantly emailed, I left voicemails, created tickets to be present during the final walkthrough as the move out language explicitly stated that I would forfeit my right to dispute any charges applied to my deposit if I had not been present and there were unresolved DOCUMENTED maintenance issues that I clearly documented in my moveout paperwork AND there were maintenance reports to support these issues so imagine my disgust when I open up my security deposit and I was charged over 1000.00 in damages. Getting someone on the phone is impossible!! Sarah Doyle assured me that she would get the message to whomever to insure that I would be present during the walkthrough as I wanted to insure that I did not get charged for existing issues and I was constantly given the runaround and was even asked by the moveout coordinator "you weren't there". Mam, how am I going to be there when noone notified me. There was never a pre-moveout walkthrough scheduled as stated in the moveout paperwork. I wish I had taken video of how I left this property. . Put in a application for a house paid the fees and got approved. We had been asking for a month for them to rekey the house and ended up just put in application hoping they would actually rekey the house for us to move into and sign the lease for. We would not sign the lease till we could view the house and thankfully we didn't there was a squatter in the house. Was then told our application fee could transfer to another house. Called multiple times Both Brittney and Trevon/Trevor and they did not return any of our calls despite us telling them we were interested in transferring our application to another house. We put in the application for the house and had to pay another application fee to find out a few days later that the house is now gone. This is the second house from this company which not due to any fault of our own but the companies we have lost out on. At this rate the company is ran poorly as the leasing coordinators do not respond to phone calls and have cost us over $300. When you call the main line you are given to a call center where they can only do so much as they are not really responsible for the houses but just providing information. There is not another house in the area that we can now "transfer our application to" as that seems to be a lie. I would avoid this company at all cost if you are looking for a rental properly in the Phoenix area. I highly doubt I can get my second application fee back but am waiting on a call back with a huge doubt that we will actually be contacted. read more

I guess it's never a good sign to see several bad reviews posted within two weeks. Firstkey Homes is truly an awful company to even attempt to rent from. I found a great home for a great price but saw it had been posted for almost four months and still hadn't been leased out. This was a reflag immediately because in today's market everything is going so quickly. Might I add this home was in one of the most favorable places to live in Phoenix AZ, the paradise valley region. By my mistake I went forth with applying for this home. The leasing agent KARA BELISLE reached out to me via phone call yesterday around 2:00-3:00pm and gave me great information that drew me in even further to applying. Such as this home has ZERO applicants right now and our application fee is only 49.00 dollars. As of 10:00 am this morning my application was totally complete and as of 5:00pm last night I viewed the home in person and no one was occupying nor approved for this home. There was suppose to be zero applicants right? Apparently not, before noon today the home was all of the sudden leased out. When I called I could not get Kara to answer the phone, until speaking to several other people first. When she finally returned my phone call her answer for me was "well our homes lease out very quickly and I stressed that to you yesterday." This home was listed for four months and hadn't been leased out but all of the sudden the morning after I apply the home gets leased out? When I asked Kara another question being "So you did not notice the home was leased out this morning before you marked my application as completed for this specific home?" And her answer was simply no I did not. How are you a professional if you aren't paying attention to detail when and what day your properties are being leased out? Kara continued to ask if we wanted our application to be applied to another home, when I asked about a specific home (once again in a favorable area of Phoenix) she said the exact same thing there are ZERO applicants at this time. After being super upset and talking to a few family members who were also looking for homes my mother in law said she had dealt with this company and they did the EXACT same thing to her. They listed homes said they were occupied then re-listed the same homes three weeks later. I really don't tend to write reviews but this company is absolutely ridiculous I can't believe they are still able to even operate and call themselves a leasing agency. read more

If you ever have the "pleasure " of dealing with Nancy Chelin I apologize in advise. She is a literal copy and paste of dry wall, she has no personality or compassion. You can tell she hates her job and could give a damn about anyone. First key homes takes your money without any real results and runs with it. Stop trying to justify your broken system that continues to effect the results of many of your prospected customers. Time and time again people are stating the denials that "your intellectual system " and "underwriters" are producing are flawed. The only solution they will give you is to call the broken system and basically dispute whatever they are denying you for, as if someone would spend money and apply if they know they do not meet the qualifications. Again just warning you guys the homes may look beautiful and seem like they are reasonably priced but do not waste your time with them. I'd suggest going with a different company or buying. Oh and when you call cooperate they advise they are aware of the flawed system but you still have to call to fight the saferent company to over turn. I wouldn't waste more time or even give you my hard working money at this point I've seen what I needed to and they will not value their tenants anyways! Honestly if you can rent you can buy! We actually just closed on our home, we just needed to rent until our home is done being built which is projected to take about a year give or take. Zero stars if I could.. would have broke lease yesterday if FirstKey Homes didn't do their (what I'm finding to be common based on other reviews) usual draining of deposit money and raising price of rent shortly before signing the lease. This company is dangerously incompetent. The only positive thing I can say about being in a FirstKey home is that it was my wake up call to NEVER RENTING A FIRSTKEY Home AGAIN. Literally, do not rent on of these homes. You will be required to accept on "as-is" basis (in the lease) & you will inherit a mountain load of issues. Just as example, FirstKey refuses to install water softeners in their homes; have fun making a maintenance request once a month for plumbing. Not to mention - maintenance isn't even competent with their job either. Save yourself the trouble; rent cheap apartment and buy a house... or rent anywhere else. Be cautious when renting from Firstkey Homes, because they are overall scammers that put on a nice front. It started from me being interested in one of their houses, touring and everything and went on and applied for the house. I put in all my information and my husband's as well, which I hated that I couldn't add my husband on the same application as mine and had to make a separate account for him, eventually submitting it after an hour. I did an ID verification quiz on which I found odd because I submitted my ID as a form of verification already, so why would I need to do this as well? After I submitted the application though, it wasn't even a solid five minutes before I got an email back from them, saying that my application was denied. The worst part was that I paid about $200 and the fact was that it was non-refundable as well was what made me furious the most. That money could've gone elsewhere except for them and to not get it back was a huge slap in the face. All of this occurred on October 16th, because came to find out that on the 18th of this month, the listing was removed. Five days after I submitted my application, the listing was removed. I am sick to my stomach about this and when it comes to renting there, never again. I am done with them as their first timer as I am their last time I will ever make contact with them. read more
