If you're looking to rent a home with first key, please reconsider someone else. They do not update their homes, and just Jerry rig fixes until you move in. Then everything breaks, and oh it's now your fault and is to be paid at your request. We've had broken drawers, cabinets and doors for about 2 years now. We're paying $2200 for a house that is outdated, broken, and horrible. They took 2 months to turn our water back on because their shitty 20yr old fridge (which is also broken) was leaking. Oh and good luck getting into contact with someone that you're able to understand when you call them with these concerns, nobody speaks English. Every single time I've had issues with them, they don't fix anything and have even charged us eviction fees when our rent was paid for. Then wouldn't give us the money back either. Our AC went out on Saturday around 4am called and requested an emergency maintenance request. FKH schedule back less than 24 hours and scheduled a FKH technician on Sunday. Montrel, the technician came on Sunday and fixed the issue in less than 1hour. He knew what to look for and was able to fix the problem within minutes. Living in AZ in mid June is brutal, super happy to have our AC fixed! read more

When we got there there were holes in the walls that looked like they weren't patched with dry wall very well, the side gate was a wooden gate with 6 deadbolts in it going across the gate door so when it got windy it didn't take much for it to fly off. I am currently a resident without AC in Arizona for the past 13 days. They are fully aware and have yet to contact me on next steps. I cannot get through to anyone, everyone states "I will request a call back", I ask to speak to a supervisor, and they absolutely refused to get me one. Their calls are recorded so I cannot wait if/when it goes to court. Maintenance will not call me back; I have requested a portable at least 5 times. I have 3 young children and dogs. Some of us don't have close support to where I can go and stay. As a property management company, I expected more. I have filed with the BBB, I have given a 5-day notice to repair, and currently seeking a lawyer. Media is going to be my next step very shortly. UPDATE: Lower management contacted me by email two days ago stating they were attaching pictures of damage I had done. No pictures were sent! They also claimed they had a move-in survey from me. I never saw nor filled out a move-in or a move-out survey. They claim I wasn't charged for cleaning except carpet cleaning, but the $355 charge was for cleaning. Well where do I start? Should I start with the impossible task of reaching a human being? Or the hoops you need to jump through to get added onto an existing application? Or the condescending tone of every person I spoke with? Or after expressing my urgency with getting my son into school (I need proof of residency) was met with "well adding someone to an application isn't a top priority." Maybe FirstKey woul dlike to explain to the truancy officer why my child isn't in school right now? On move in day, carpet was/is disgusting. Never been cleaned. Grass had not been mowed in weeks. Flies were everywhere. There are also cockroaches. Dishwasher smells like death. And to bring this lovely experience with FirstKey homes to a close, a tree fell down across the driveway. We called immediately multiple times and sent emails. A ticket was issued for a landscaping company to contact us and SHOCKER no word from anyone yet. I need fewer stars. Where to start. We got the keys to our new home but it took a few days for us to line up a mover, so we got some friends to help us move our camping equipment, etc. You can imagine our shock when I showed up at the house to find the FIRE MARSHALL there - and the house failed the inspection so that cost us several hundred dollars in moving costs. (In fairness, they did get permission for us to put our camping gear in the garage... super kind *sarcasm*) There were so many things wrong with the house it took four pages to note. Busted water valves on the outside. Broken glass. Fistfuls of nails on the garage floor and the driveway. Piles and piles of dog feces in the yard. Phone/cable lines LITERALLY cut in several places (how did that pass inspection?!) AC support struts busted out under the system. Loose/unfinished railings on the deck. You get the idea. Utility bills - outsourced to a 3rd party, and billing us for time we were not legally allowed to occupy the property (per the fire marshal), and it took an act of god to get those reversed. Same for issues with getting renters insurance acknowledged... And ALL of this could have been navigated with the help of a (marginally) effective account manager, but getting emails returned and problems solved? Not so much. It took two months and me simply not paying the utility bill to finally be able to talk to a person to find out what a mystery monthly charge was (and three more emails to get that resolved - again, not OUR fault). I've spent enough time in the five months we've been renting this house trying to fix poor management issues that, based on my hourly salary, we could have paid the rent for two months (and I'm NOT Jeff Bezos). Find another property management company. Rent an RV. Stay at the Y. You'll be happier. I promise. read more

I applied for a unit. ($58.95 application fee) and was Approved. I was so excited to be getting out of this apartment after 4 yrs. I quickly replied and accepted. At that time i was congratulated and welcomed by Rhonda.. then Stephanie Bowman. We discussed move in dates and they wanted me to move in 8 days. I explained to them that i just paid my January rent and i was expecting to move in Feb 1st.. but no earlier than Jan 26th. They said they couldn't accommodate those dates. I explained to Stephanie that i needed to give my current landlord notice. I can't give a notice without having a place secured. I offered a holding fee. She went on to tell me that the holding fee is to hold my application which made no sense.. when the application is good for 30 days once approved. So I was disagreeing with her and she hung up on me. I called back several times and she didn't answer or call me back. I tried a bit later and she answered like nothing had happened and said that she'll reinstate my application for the unit. It NEVER happened. I tried to contact Rhonda through email, text, landlines and left several messages. No call or contact was made back. I tried to speak with supervisors, managers anybody besides Stephanie at this point and was unsuccessful. I finally got in contact with Stephanie again only for her to tell me that MY unit was no longer available. What???? How is this possible?? Very bad, unprofessional service. read more

On our first visit to one of their homes, I was greeted by an ozone machine that had been negligently left running for days. Toxic gas filled the home and they had been sending prospective residents there. If we had not noticed the machine, it is likely we would have collapsed and suffocated. Their followups were extremely disturbing. Not only did they not acknowledge the issue directly for three messages, but they flippantly attempted to say it was not an issue. Their service staff appears to have no issue endangering the lives of their customers, and the leasing agent was unaware to indifferent on the matter. When I called to find out what happened they brushed me off and said I don't get my money back for the application fee. They scammed me through and through. I have just moved into a firstkey home and I will say it has been tough to get any proper help. I need a mailbox key, but I have to go to the post office and request AND PAY a replacement fee to get one. Instead of just having the prior key available it makes it very hard to transition to a new home having to figure this out, especially since I have to travel so much for work. They also, require you to set up trash and sewer by "finding a provider in the area" myself even though on their rent portal they say they take care of providing utilities- I was assuming that meant trash as well. But even if they don't provide it, at least provide the proper trash service provider for the area along with notifying me that I will need to set this service up. I didn't realize I had to do any of this before moving in and now trash is piling up. When I called they sent me some addendum to fill out but the instructions were so vague and I'm not sure what I need to do with it, since the authorized agent portion of the form is blank. I also, recently saw that if we need any maintenance, if the company they use charges a travel fee, we are responsible for paying that. I have never dealt with a rental company that requires the tenant to pay any portion of any repair. Thats the only benefit of renting, is not having to pay for repairs!!!! I just barely got my keys and couple weeks ago and can already tell it's going to be such a headache to deal with this rental company, I am already looking forward to the day my lease expires. read more

If we could give a negative star review we would. Worst company to rent from. Their communication is horrendous and their customer service is non existent. We began renting when Covid was at its peak and we requested to make sure the home was cleaned prior to moving in. Well the home was definitely not cleaned although we were told it was. Had to rent a steam cleaner and cleaned the floor and carpet at least 3 times before the water was clear. No compensation offered. We were told our walk through would be delayed a day before move in due to short staffing. A walk through never happened. Each time we reached out to speak with our property manager we kept getting a property administrator. Its been a year and we still haven't been able to speak with a manager (if one even exists). The day of our move in we're supposed to receive a code to get into the door lock. Never received a code and had to call multiple times and speak with multiple people to get the code which delayed move in by 2 hours. No compensation offered when we told them we had to pay extra to keep the U-Hal we rented. Our lease is finally over and we moved out. Its been almost a month and we haven't heard anything regarding our move out inspection. We reached out and no one can give us answers. The property administrator said the property manager would be able to update us. Well as mentioned before we haven't had success. The communication is absolutely nonexistent. Starting from day one. Difficult time getting our keys pushing our move in back. No walk through the home. Dirty with bugs everywhere. Pool wasn't ready to use AND HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT A PROBLEM THAT THEY DO NOT FIX (but still being charged monthly for it). When things break or there is maintenance requested it takes weeks to fix and during that time they don't follow up. Don't ever expect to talk to someone if you're dealing with an issue because it will not happen. The pump is no longer working and has been out for over two months, right in the middle of the Summer. I am forced to pay $100 a month for a pool service that I am not receiving and no one returns calls or e-mails. We now have a GREEN pool in our backyard in the middle of the Summer that we are unable to swim in, not to mention the eyesore. He came to my apartment and asked me is there any thing wrong with my apartment as if he was going to fix it and help me. He put a 7 day eviction notice for the things he asked me about in my house. 7 day eviction for not having a screen in the window, 7 day eviction notice for grass witch I always cut, 7 day eviction notice a little hole my dog digged, 7 day eviction notice if I park my car on the grass. We've had had back to back horrible experiences with FirstKey. They were the buyer on two of our listings recently and as a listing agent they were just horrible to work with. For one of our deals they held the seller hostage and required them reduce the price or they'd cancel days before the closing date. Because they were counting on this sale they had to agree to the 20k price drop otherwise be forced into an even worse position on the other end. The other experience they dragged their feet to only cancel just days before closing. They are a bait and switch company and are not as easy to work with as they claim. I would advise your sellers to steer clear of them if they receive an offer. They use Opendoor agents and contracts to submit and work their offers, but are not Opendoor. I'm a huge fan of Opendoor and help clients sell to them often, and this company is not them. Terrible service and terrible for the consumer. read more

When I started renting from them, they provided me with a home that had so many issues that took weeks to repair, the HOA got involved and violated us and when I was trying to contact FKH about it, no one ever got back to me. Anytime I've ever needed help with the home or needed to contact my property manager or landlord during regular business hours via email or phone, not one person ever got back to me no matter how many times I contacted them or said how urgent the matter was. My roommate and I had a terrible experience applying for a home through FirstKey. We applied and they refused to accept my roommate's proof of income. She submitted bank statements AND pay slips. They then began emailing and calling over and over demanding that she send a W2, which she could not do because she started her job in 2022 and does not have a W2 for it yet. I asked the representative, Daniel Quintana, to inquire with Underwriting as to what the problem was with her bank statments/pay stubs and he told me he would ask then never got back to me. Also, we applied for a home listed at $1500 per month, and the day after we applied (and paid the $100 non-refundable application fee), they changed the price to $1800. I've been looking for a home for several months now, and I've noticed that FirstKey regularly posts homes at a low price for several days, then raises the price considerably once people begin responding to the ad. I'm convinced that this company purposely lists homes at a lower price, collects hundreds of dollars worth of application fees, declines the applicants who applied for the lower price, then raises the rent. Property owners and applicants alike should be wary about renting from this company. It seems like from my experience and other reviews that this company declines qualified applicants and leaves homes on the market for unnecessarily long times in order to collect fees. read more

The house is essentially in disrepair with the front and back doors not being sealed, allowing for the bugs to continue to enter the home. Now six months after moving in I am still calling them every day begging to speak with management and not getting anywhere. I did get Sam in the maintenance department and he ASSURED me someone from the local office would give me a call, and sure enough that has never happened. I have had an open work order for 6 months on my back doors, which according to the lease is their responsibility to fix. they continuously give the run around. Worst renters to rent from!!!! They are shark renters! They increase yearly by a lot! The deposits are nearly impossible. We only had three photos of what the place looked like. We were in a big need to move in so we just did it. Been renting for two years now, we will not be by the third year a new lease. They do trickery! They were notified by our hoa, that the neighborhood has new or old requirements that the hoa is needing. First key wouldn't tell me when this was in place, they planted three bushes, not connected to any irrigation first key and their gas lighting techniques when they speak to you on the phone they go in circles. The bushes even by me hand watering was not enough and burned this season, they will not replace and now is my responsibility. Not to mention the other three bushes in the front that are appropriate irrigation times and amount. They still died even though we had a technician come out from the company and he said that the valley is all having this issue, that the irrigation timer time is perfectly set already as it was. First key is a joke really rude and just is money hungry. We have kept great care of the home and O guarantee $1,000 we will not get from the deposit of 2,500 that we had to put down to rent. We haven't been with FirsKey homes a month yet, and I am regretting the move already. When you're applying and the company wants your money they are always available. Once you pay your deposit, it's hard to get ahold of anyone. They have a customer service line where the workers are of no help. No main point of contact was given for our move in date. We called the company more than 10 times on our move in date because we still didn't have a key. We weren't able to move in until late evening. No accountability or anything when problems expressed. We ran the vacuum a total of 4 times and the canisters are always filled with dirt and hair, so they didn't clean the carpet, probably used a cheap vacuum for a clean look. So now we are paying $200 to get the carpet cleaned properly. We ask for our mailbox number they can't tell us. So we have to go out of our way to get mailbox number only to find out that the keys given to us do not work. We called multiple times only to be told we will have to pay $60 for a new mailbox lock and key on top of the thousands of dollars we've already paid to move in. It's been a terrible experience and again we haven't been here a month yet. I will be sure to let others know to never do business with them. read more

We have rented from FirstKey Homes for the past 2 years. every year they raise the rent. When we decided not to renew our lease and find something cheaper we found a home that FirstKey Homes owned. So we applied. Today I got a letter from FirstKey telling me that our renter's score was too low so they declined our application. That doesn't make any sense. We have NEVER been late on our rent. we have taken care of the house as if we owned it. We just felt that they were asking too much for this house we were still in. So why are we good enough to rent a home for the past 2 years above $2,000.00 but when we apply for a house for $1,695 we don't qualify? I tried calling the leasing agent for 3 days and she still hasn't returned any of my calls. I don't believe that this " renters score " is a real thing. if it was why would they rent to us for the past 2 years? Can someone answer me? To me, it sounds like they are trying to force us to stay where we are so we pay more money. Tell me.. does any of this make sense to anyone? I really would like to rent the other house. First Key Homes is an absolute joke. I have rented with them at multiple properties and rarely do I have a pleasant experience. This company price gouges by charging high rent even in lower income areas and the price does not match the property or location. They raise the rent over 10% every single year no matter how long you have worked with them and they are never willing to negotiate. Their "customer service" team is a joke. If I could leave 0 stars. I would. My ac stopped working last night at 5pm. We waited it out to see if maybe it would resolve itself. And it didn't. So at 8pm we called to file a maintenance request. Since it was 88 degrees inside when we called , they deemed it "an emergency maintenance" request. BULLSHIT. An emergency response to me is someone coming out within a couple hours to fix the ac. Not waiting for 24 hours just to get a callback from a service vendor only for them to make an appointment. By 11pm last night the inside of my house was OVER 100 degrees. I had to take my family to a hotel. I have called them over 5 times trying to get updates and speed the process along. And every single time they give me the run around. They claimed a technician tried to call me but had connection issues. So why didn't the technician try calling again? The best part? Our ac just broke last summer when I was 5-6 months pregnant. So obviously they didn't fix it completely or this shouldn't be happening. Overall terrible experience. I've never been treated so poorly about the safety of myself, my child and my pets. Don't rent here. American homes 4 rent is so much better. Update 2 hours later. I finally got a call from the vendor. Guess what. Vendor doesn't have anything until 2-6 pm TOMORROW. So no ac for almost 48 hours for us. Another hotel it is. And they better reimburse me too. So unfortunate that they can't comprehend that it is DANGEROUS to stay in conditions like this. What a joke. If I could give them 0 stars, I would. Issue after issue arose since move in. Terrible timely responses, impossible to schedule an emergency maintenance, and lastly how irresponsible they are on providing electricity bills to tenants. We were charged with a lot of issues the house came with and mentioned this on the move-in inspection YET still being charged with issues they did not fix. My boyfriend and I were looking for a house because we've been living in an apartment for a while now. We now make more money and wanted to do an upgrade in living. We started looking on the popular rental apps like Zillow, Trulia, Hotpads, etc. We come across a property through Firstkey Homes. The agent Veronica whom my boyfriend was speaking with about the property advised us that the property cant be viewed until like mid June. We submitted our applications even without viewing it. The next night we get an email advising that we were declined with referral. Keep in mind my boyfriend was listed as primary and I as secondary. My boyfriend has better credit and makes more, hence why we put him as the primary. Well in that email it showed only my information and that we couldn't afford the the place we were trying to rent. I then the next day call customer service and tried to advise the that I don't believe they ran my boyfriends information because it doesn't make any sense why we can't afford the house were applying for. The agent I was speaking to went over the fact that I just stated that and told me to contact our leasing agent to find a house within $1300. My boyfriend and I can afford a home with $3000 rent so for them to say we need to look for a cheaper place doesn't make any sense at all. I call the leasing agent which now is a different guy, I can't remember his name, I think It might've been Michael. Well I call him and advise him of my concern, that why they declined it doesn't make any sense and I don't think they ran the applications right and the credit screenings right. He then belittles me and tells me that it doesn't matter if my boyfriend is listed as primary. Funny because usually Primary means something. If it doesn't mean anything or make a difference then why name it that. Should just list it as applicants only if those words mean nothing. Then he states he has nothing to do with the decision in how applications are processed. He refers me back to customer service. I call them again and then get push back and was advised to contact the leasing agent. I advised them I just spoke with the leasing agent and they referred me to you guys. I explain the situation again, the agent then connects me over to an agent that is in the underwriting area, whom helps with processing applications. The agent stated they can see they didn't include my boyfriends information. Stated they would send it in again and then within 48 hours I should receive a phone call or email advising me of the status. Well it's been a week and a half and nothing. The same day I spoke with the agent to send in applications again, My boyfriend and I were so frustrated and fed up with the whole experience with this company. We decided to apply for another house that we found through Fort Lowell Property and Management. The next day we were approved. How about that? No declined with referral no pushback. Simple easy process. First key homes put us through hoops and made an experience that is supposed to be fun and exciting a horrible and stressful one. The lack of communication and sympathy/empathy this company has is just beyond words to me. Belittled me, made me feel as I was being dumb. I feel bad for the people that are not tech savvy because they are taken advantage of by companies like this. If I were a leasing agent, I would be contacting my client to ensure that they got what they needed. No follow up? Oh it's because I was a handful and being stern because no one was listening to me or helping me. I'd love to show these people how to do their job but sadly I didn't sign up for this career path.
