Aside from the fact that they closed all but one of their local branches here in Eugene, Oregon, the abysmal functionality of their website and mobile app make for an experience just slightly better than having a root canal with no anesthesia while waiting in line at the DMV with "waiting to be served" number ONE MILLION. As I'm writing this, the web and mobile app are once again displaying the heart-warming message: "We're sorry! Our system is experiencing difficulties that are preventing you from logging in. You know, that mega-bank that received hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars and gives giant, undeserved bonuses to their useless executives? Join a credit union. I'd give First Tech five stars except that they don't have a single branch in Seattle. Boo! However, they're part of a nationwide network of credit unions, so I can actually do my banking in Seattle. You can open an account online, but I prefer a little human contact so I drove over to the east side today to open an account. The customer service agent who helped me was super-friendly and setting up my new accounts only took about 20 minutes. I walked out with a new debit card in my wallet (already activated and ready to use) and a big grin on my face. Next stop: my local Chase branch, so I can empty my accounts and tell their crooked, thieving executives to stick it where the sun don't shine! read more

We have been members of this Credit Union for more than 10 years. Before we were with banks that dinged us with fees for no reason. The last bank we left before coming to First Tech was Bank of America. They made me come in to close my account. A VP talked to us asking us why we were leaving. I told them that their fees for such a good customer as us was unconscionable. He said, all you have to do is ask and we will reduce your fees. WTH??? First Tech is staffed by caring, sharp people who go out of their way to provide the best customer service possible. We have had a mortgage with them, a business loan, and our accounts. I would recommend this credit union to anyone. read more

I don't often use First Tech CU, despite having an account. It's just easier to bank with my other credit union. For one, their online experience isn't terrible (more on this later), and for the other, I've had a relationship with them much longer (10+ years, versus the 6 years at First Tech). My other CU is out of state, so I often end up doing shared branch banking at other credit unions in Seattle. However, I was driving around Redmond today, and told myself "hey, I have money to deposit, let's actually do it at First Tech!". Upon entering the branch, I was asked what I needed by someone whose job was to greet people, I guess? As soon as I said I needed to do a deposit using shared branching, this person said "Oh, we don't do that by teller anymore. You need to use our ATM." ... Oookay? I stepped to the side of the lobby area, to their ATM. Tried to do the shared branch deposit using a debit card. You kind of have to. "Transaction not supported". Someone was just lying or deeply unaware of procedures. Meanwhile, the attendant (??? No really, they just have someone stand near the lobby entrance, go figure) just looked on, with nary an offer to help. I just lost it. I was too upset to close my account. I just drove around, and found a different credit union from my listing of shared credit union banking sites. This was a bank who didn't have any money of mine. However, someone handled my transaction within 5 minutes, deposit made, zero issues, and wished me a nice day. Then I came home and tried to find out who I would have to call/e-mail to express my displeasure with First Tech. I never got there. Their website kept freezing mid scroll. Eventually, the browser I was using shut down, probably due to the website layout being too scroll heavy. So much for that. I'm probably making one last trip to First Tech CU, to close my account. read more

Our experience with FirstTech began with a mortgage re-fi in 2013. Prior to that, and over the years, we had worked with many lenders and brokers on purchases and refinances. In every case, the were slow, sloppy, expensive, or otherwise difficult to work with in some way. In contrast, our experience with FirstTech was -- by far -- the smoothest, most straightforward, no-hassle, no-worry transaction we've ever done. Not only that, the loan programs, fees, and rates were all top-notch as well. I worked in the banking industry for a few years and I was around it for most of my life. I know how challenging it can be to do this type of work and do it well. To be friendly on top of that is exceptional. We have continued to have positive experiences with both the online/mobile systems and the FirstTech staff at this location. There are a couple quirky things. The environment is pretty casual if you're used to a bank (or even BECU) and you can't change your PIN without coming to the branch. But everyone we've encountered has been friendly and helpful and I love that I can deposit checks from my phone without being charged a fee. So far, so good. I would definitely recommend FirstTech. read more

For the first time home buyers, please do your calculations with other banks and lenders in your local region. Definitely, they had knowledge in what they suggest but that doesn't mean it works for all. In my case, doing deep dive math helped me stay away from this bank. The problem is they are trying to sell their plan and argue other plans are wrong. Please don't try to impose your idea to be the best, listen out to the customer, because the customer is the one who is gonna pay for rest of his loan period, not the bank! Finally after 17 years I am closing all my accounts. Customer service has gone from bad to worse to almost non existent. Recommending our recent experience to all our friends encouraging them to close as well. Certain things for feedback. 1. As someone who rarely uses checks First Tech used to give temp checks for people who need 1-2 checks. They stopped doing this. Certified checks are painful as you can see the encashed check image. This was what set you apart. 2. Crazy charges for cashing Canadian checks irrespective if amount. 28$ flat for cad 35 check 3. While other Banks likes Wells Fargo are providing free wire transfers first tech increased the charges for this 4. Notary services now need appts in significant advance which means I just use pony Express now 5. Rude and ignorant customer service and the rep made a racist comment against indians. This is the final straw. I am closing my account. read more

I was a member at FirstTech for 20 years and just cancelled all of my accounts and moved to BECU. The problem was their online banking and bill payment software. My family lives and dies by online banking. I haven't been inside an actual FirstTech branch in close to 10 years. In this day and age there is no excuse for the problems that FirstTech has with their online banking system. It's down for maintenance far too often. The new Alkami system they have switched to is worse than what they were using and often requires more days to schedule an online bill payment. If online banking means anything to you, please try FirstTech's system first before moving all of your accounts to this credit union. We had a poor experience and decided to bank elsewhere. read more

We first met with Duke Keltner of FTCU when our home search had just started as a far off goal. We did not have a budget in mind, a defined date when we would be submitting requests from a lender, or really any focused direction with our plan. Yet, Duke still went out of his way to meet with us with no guarantee of future business and spent time with us to go over our lending questions. This started our journey of several months of phone calls, emails, documents and more than a little hand holding from Duke that lead to us closing on a home last week. During this time, Duke has been an excellent resource whether it was to ask a random question or alerting us of the current interest rates to help us understand the best time to file for our loan. Duke is prompt in responding whether by phone or email, and excelled in making us feel comfortable in this process. Compared to many people we have spoken with that have bought homes or are in the process of buying a home, our process was really streamlined and almost stress free. Duke was a huge part of making this process not overload us with stress or leave us with lingering lending questions that kept us up at night. I cannot recommend Duke enough here, and I 100% intend to recommend him to any of our friends or family members seeking a help with a lender in the future read more

I've been a member of First Tech Credit Union since 1995 and they have gone to the dogs since the merger. Customer service on par with or below AT&T Wireless. Phones are answered by some random call center with nice people who are ultimately not knowledgeable about certain things. Email contact is the worst. You will get one reply to your question and no followup. Don't support Turbo Tax Online anymore and have not responded to my inquiries about why. People in the local branches are great but I can say the same thing about Skank of America. Gotta find a different credit union. read more

First Tech on 156th in Redmond, WA The woman (Oleana K) who "helped" me today SHOULD NOT be dealing with the public. I came in to get a "Release of Interest" on my car and this woman treated me so poorly, I almost left the bank without what I needed. According to her, because my car's loan was older than their current online system, they would have to search for it in the Archives and therefor, all kind of paperwork may be needed from me for them to do that. You would think that the car's VIN and my name would be enough to find the loan but she insisted that 'they' may required other stuff. This is a loan that has been paid off for at least 10 years. Excuses galore and to top it all, she told me: "Well, and you're not even a member anymore." as if for that reason alone, she doesn't have to help me. Unbelievable!!! When Archives finally approved the release, she didn't want to fill out the DMV form, she wanted to give me their own form. I insisted she fill out the DMV form since that is what I needed, not a fancy letterhead form that may not be accepted. She then stormed out of the office, huffing and puffing to get the notary, her id, etc. UNBELIEVABLE!!! read more

Worst financial institution I've ever dealt with. Had my ATM card skimmed there twice. The second time the thieves even managed to plant a video camera *inside* the enclosed foyer so they could view people keying their pin numbers into the machine. (Management didn't notice the camera or the skimmer for a couple weeks!) Also, phone customer service over the years has been tepid, at best. I really don't feel like First Tech has my financial back anymore, and that's a shame. Given this, I recommend USAA or BECU now - never First Tech. Good Luck! read more

A good bank, but always long waiting lines

I've had accounts here since 1994 when I started at Microsoft. Microsoft may be a distant memory for me, but not First Tech. I've run three auto loans through them, and two re-financings -- the most recent closing a week ago. They have changed a lot (but so have I!). They are still solid. They don't have a lot of local branches, but I do my banking almost exclusively online anyway. The folks at those branches are friendly and have always been exceedingly helpful. My wife has always had similar comments. They take care of relatively small but helpful things, such as free notary services and certified checks. During the refinancing, the loan officer always got back to me, using email and their secured email. She answered all the questions and there were no surprises. Their rate and fee were highly competitive. The refinancing never required a visit to a First Tech branch or the title company's office -- very smooth! Their web site did have a very rough period during the recent merger, but it has been fine for several months now. In the meantime, Bank of America and Chase seem intent on trying to invent and wrestle every possible fee out of me (though I will say the BoA QFC branch in downtown Redmond has very friendly people). I think credit unions really deserve our support. read more

I was with First Tech for over 20 years but was finally fed up with their incompetence and lack of service. Over the last 5 years, things have gotten much worse. In addition to making accounting errors on my accounts, they act as if anything other than basic withdraws and deposits are ridiculous and unheard of. "I would like to open a ROTH IRA CD." What? He wants to open a ROTH IRA CD?? Umm.... I'll have to go ask the manager. The manager comes in to the little glass room and fumbles around on the computer and announces they must call corporate headquarters. So they call. And try again. And fail. So they call corporate again. And try again. This goes on for 45 minutes and they still can't figure it. I can't believe I'm the first one who has ever wanted to put money in a ROTH IRA CD. Eventually they tell me to leave and they'll work on it and get back to me. Same situation with depositing a lump sum in an IRA, opening a business account, transferring money between banks, and getting a Medallion Signature Guarantee (which they require to transfer money to Fidelity but do not have anyone licensed to do this at their bank.) The newish website is a convoluted mess. God forbid you want to cancel a scheduled payment, or find send an eBill. First Tech, I loved you once. Now I have to let you go. read more

I absolutely HATE First Tech; my husband has been using them for ~20 yrs, 15 yrs or so for me, and they never get any better. If we didn't have so much tied up w/ them because of that history & it wouldn't be a Gordian knot to untangle, we would have jumped ship years ago. First off, let's deal with the joke of a new branch, shall we? I know they got evicted from their old building because it was going to be torn down, but this was a chance to make something great. Instead it feels like you've entered the War Room from Dr. Strangelove. The lighting is too bright and you flinch, as if you're about to be interrogated. The couches are too close to the 'tellers', so everyone can hear your business & the 'tellers' stand at a podium w/ a laptop and slip your cheque into the aforementioned podium... doesn't invoke a sense of security or seriousness, frankly. Their ATM, (the one you have to use outside business hours), has a tiny glass overhang so if it is raining or super sunny you get no protection & in the latter case, it means it is nearly impossible to read the screen. It is also not very secure - at their old location, which was INSIDE A VESTIBULE, their ATM had a skimmer installed on it a bunch of years ago and so all of us had to have our cards reissued if they had been used at the ATM before the skimmer was found. So of course it makes perfect sense to make this ATM less secure. Their online banking... you would think after three iterations they might be able to hire someone competent to write software? No. Last time they merged joint account info so only one of them had access to billpay - meaning I had to log onto my husband's online account to manage our joint bills. This time, after setting up billpay on my home machine, they suddenly don't recognise it when I log in a second time & need to send a code to a phone or an email... problem is, since it was primarily his account, all the contact info is his, so I have to bug him for the code so I can access our bill history (no warning this would happen). Apparently I can 'see' the payees on my account now, but I can't get the history. I got the code from him & it says it expires at XX Pacific Standard Time, despite the fact it is DAYLIGHT time right now. Oh, & when you select a payee at the bottom of your list you now have to scroll to the top in order to enter the amount. And then again... and again... A few years ago my purse got stolen, (I hate thieves), & of course my wallet was gone. I called First Tech and cancelled my cards and didn't think anything of it until about 2 months later when our joint credit card seemed high. Somehow that one card got unblocked, (there were no transactions for several days & a few attempts to use it which were stopped, and then they started approving transactions again), and there was $2000 on the card in fraud! We seldom use the card and mistakenly thought that you know, a card blocked is inviolate. Then I spent the next 30 minutes bounced around from department to department trying to find someone to help, finally did, but I was told they would only reverse the charges if we filled out a form with the bad transactions and got it to them in 20 minutes. I had a meeting I absolutely could not miss and frantically got a hold of my husband who managed to JUST get it in. They screwed up and acted like WE were the problem. Then of course there is Annie, the Notary, who I see other people have had the pleasure of encountering. My mom died, & I needed notarised copies of her will that was sealed by the state of Texas - basically notarised copies of the official will entered. First Annie said they didn't do copies of wills, but that wasn't the case. Then she looked at the will & started whining and complaining about how long it was (11 pgs), why is this mark there, why is this stamped. I had several copies of my mom's will - regular copies for the post office, etc & then I needed these notarised copies for the bank, etc. She kept complaining and was annoyed that I finally thought maybe I had the wrong copy, I didn't want to deal with her, and I got up and left. Of course they were the right copies, & I found a notary who didn't complain about doing their job. It was hard enough to deal with all this legal junk after my mom died without having someone from my 'friendly' credit union we've been part of about two decades complain. And then there was the time we cashed a cheque and asked for it in our chequing, (it was a transfer, we have done it a lot), & it was put into the wrong one & caused overdraft and an NSF fee. We'd had an NSF reversed about two months prior as a courtesy, (that was my mistake, I scheduled a bill for the wrong date), but this time we were both in the car at the teller & know we said joint chequing. We called & explained the situation & the person said, "Fine! I'll do it this ONE LAST TIME but never ask again! Never again!" Wow. 2 stars for the few good ppl TLDR: Find another Credit Union. read more

Horrible experience with our mortgage. Had to extend multiple times for our purchase. Low initial rate ended up being higher and our payment went up..on and on. Won't do this again. Ill do more research and go with not only the best deal but the best service as well. In this case the "best deal" ended up being 3rd or 4th best. read more

Totally frustrated. After over 10 years of being a customer, they stopped sending me my debit card. I had to call to get one. Then they didn't send me the PIN. Called again. Had to wait 10-14 business days to get a PIN - totally ridiculous - and got the PIN for my husband's debit card not for mine. I needed this for my upcoming trip to Iceland where I need to access an ATM. Called them again from Europe to request an urgent delivery for the right PIN, spoke to 3 representatives incl. a supervisor and they said I had to pay $20 and would get it in 3-5 business days which is way too late. And oh by the way I have to call again during normal business hours....(well that would be in the middle of the night where I am. I asked them if they couldn't talk among themselves and not me having to place international calls to 3 people again at 3am my time. That wasn't possible I was told. Totally ridiculous.....how can this be called taking care of customers..... read more
