Not good! I called Alpine Bike Works on Friday June 12th. I was told they had one Santa Cruz…read moreMegatower CS X-large bike in stock; however, it was still in the box. I stated that I would be stopping by on the morning of Sunday the 14th to check it out and purchase it. I was told the bike would be ready and waiting for me. I arrived at the shop on Sunday 11am only to discover the bike had not been pulled, unboxed and assembled yet--a process that takes between an hour to an hour and a half. I had just driven 96mi/2 hours to get there only to learn they failed to follow through with having the bike ready & waiting. As I left the shop, the Owner stopped me outside stating that he wanted to "help me". I asked him what exactly he meant by that, to which he responded "I'll have the bike built for you right now." Now, I'm thinking to myself this guy didn't have time to get it right prior to my arrival; yet, suddenly has found the time--My Time--to get it right after my arrival? Really? That's how it's done? I told the Owner I don't do business like this. No reputable business does. Since when did it become acceptable to presume upon a potential customers time? My plans for the day did not include waiting 1 1/2 hours for a bike build. This guy didn't even offer to buy me a cup of coffee while I waited. Furthermore, what prevented them from calling me ahead of time to inform me the bike wouldn't be ready & waiting? They had a day and a half! Also, I couldn't help but wonder as I drove home, if the Owner lost sight of the fact that as a paying customer, I was there to Help him and not the other way around. He needed to sell the bike; I don't need to buy. Lastly, if they can't be counted upon to assemble a bike when they said they would, or at least make a simple heads-up courtesy phone call, then what is there to make me think they can follow through with anything else? I can only imagine the headaches were there to be a warranty issue or a simple return. Not Good! Scott M. Colchester, Vt.

Living a half hour away from the nearest full-service bicycle shop, hoping to box stores for my…read morecycling needs has been quite easy, but still, I would rather support local. So with four bicycles of different types in my garage needing supplies, I searched for something more on the small shop category and came up with Omer and Bob's. I was quite happy I made that decision. What is amazing is that being a 100-ski day yearly skier, Omer and Bob's had never been in my radar as a ski shop and yet, they started as a ski shop during the early days of Mick Jagger - (actually the shop opened in the same year as the Rolling Stone's first album). From its beginnings, it is now a full-activity sports shop, offering Nordic and Alpine ski, bicycling, sports shoe wear and running apparel. Despite its relatively modest footprint, it is well supplied with quality equipment. They carry all types or bicycle gear, electric bikes, racers, commuters, leisure, recumbent, you name it. And at reasonable prices that make this a great value. The staff is friendly and businesslike. I came in for replacement tubes for my four bicycles and they had everything I needed. And then I spent some time impulse-buying and looking over their selections. I will be definitely be coming over here again. On a side note, their main entrance is on the same block as the center of Lebanon, where the city has made the most superb decision to close down lanes of traffic to allow all fresco seating for several restaurants and improve the town's vibe. You can shop and then enjoy the downtown area.

(Marty saved me so much time and $$; I got everything I needed in one place, on my way to the mountain :) I initially came in just to have my binding settings adjusted, but after talking with me extensively about my skiing habits, reviewing all the binding guidelines, and discussing my strong desire to not incur knee injuries (lol), we decided to leave the settings as they were. Marty had thoroughly checked the binding release action on both points of both skis, and I had the benefit of his expertise, so I expected to pay at least something for that, but he declined any payment. So, I took the opportunity to have him give my skis a much-needed sharpening and wax, which he did, by hand, in about 20-30 minutes. We had a very nice chat while he worked; he's got all the local insider info about Killington and the area! He asked where I was off to next, and I explained that I was going to goodwill to try to find a cheap ski jacket, having forgotten mine as it was hung in a closet rather than bagged with the rest of my gear, and I was happy to discover that he also rents ski jackets- a too-well-kept secret! Don't expect anything fancy, but if you want something to keep you warm, for only $10/day, come here!! Later on, as I worked my way down some classic early-season black diamond trails, with generally great conditions but also the usual skiied-off areas, and my friends talked about how icy the trails were, I realized that the edge sharpening had made a huge difference for me! Cannot recommend this place enough for its value, service, and awesome vintage vibe!!
