I called this salon because it was close to my work and I was desperate after 2 months of waiting (Covid) I called at 6:20pm, they close at 7:30pm. I asked if they had any appointments left for today figuring they would say no, and he said "sure come at 6:30pm." I got there and was asked to wear a mask (3 days post Covid opening) so I obliged. The place is small and clean. I choose my color and hopped into the chair. I had a gentle and quality experience. My nails look great and my esthetician had great attention to detail and perfection. Once, when a nail acrylic overlay came off over the weekend, they fixed the nail for free, no questions asked. All except for pressing too hard once in a while sanding off the gel polish, and being very busy at times, they do an excellent fill (why they're so busy I assume)! I did it. I had my first pedicure. I've been thinking about it for months, and today was the day. I had no clue what to do when I went in First Star Nail except to ask for a pedicure. "Pick a color," one of the pedicurists hollered. I must have looked like a deer in the headlights because she followed up with a gesture toward the wall o' color. I stood there for several minutes before I remembered to ask for a French pedicure. That's why I was puzzled about the color thing because I wasn't planning to walk out with pink tootsies. Apparently you can use a color for this style too, but the whole experience was rattling enough without having to make another decision. I proceeded to have a nice foot soaking, nail trimming, callous removing, exfoliating, moisturizing hour. The staff doesn't engage you, but that just leaves you more time to read a magazine or catch up with an old friend in the massage chair next to you. Very disappointed. Called and scheduled an appointment for myself and my two daughters for pedicures. Appointment was set for 130 and it was 2 before we were brought back (after asking how much longer). We sat in the pedicure chairs for another 20 minutes without being tended to. Meanwhile, two other customers came in, sat down and they started on their nails. I politely asked the gentleman working what was going on and that we didn't have all day to sit there when our appointment was scheduled 50 minutes ago. He didn't have an answer for me so I told my girls we would be leaving. I took them outside and came back in so I could further discuss this with the staff and not in front of my children. I asked him "what makes the two that came after us with appointment times after us more important than us" he stated "they take longer and need more". I told him this was beyond unacceptable and would not be returning. I understand places are short staffed right now but don't book an appointment for someone, make them wait almost an hour and provide services to those who have appointment times after. Nail tech was super patient while trying to remove gel polish from another salon on my toes. Didn't get frustrated and did a rockstar job removing it after 20 minutes of soaking it. I have had many bridal events, bachelorette parties, and girls weekend treatments here. They always are willing to work with you, your schedule, and how many people are attending. They are simply the best and most affordable nail salon in the Shawnee area. I get acrylic fill with gel on top and it's $30 each time! Plus- Due to my job, I seem to frequently break a nail, and they never charge me for a repair. Absolutely love this place and their wonderful staff! I never found a place good enough there so I came home every other week for my fill with Lynn or Katie. My sister and Mom have been going to this salon for a while. A couple of years ago, I drove out to buy gift certificates for their Christmas gifts. During that brief encounter, they seemed like nice people and the salon looked clean enough. Fast forward to yesterday.. I needed a new set of acrylic nails, and my family was also due for services, so we all went together, with my 3 1/2 yr old granddaughter in tow. My sister had called ahead for appointment times for all of us, and there was no waiting. ALL of the staff was warm, welcoming, and obviously enjoyed their jobs. I was not having a pedi, but my granddaughter loves them. It was perfectly fine with the staff for her to walk back to sit with her great grandma and Aunt. They clearly understand children, and treated her like a full service receiving customer. (As a side note, she is a very well behaved little girl. But I feel like they would have helped to occupy her if she weren't). My service was phenomenal! Linh carefully removed my old tips (likely sensing my nervousness, as I had never had this done before, and I was afraid it would be painful or that one wrong move and I'd bleed!). She worked efficiently, but not fast and rough, like I've had at other salons. She did an amazing job, and I love the results! Also, she smiles a lot and asked how I wanted things instead of just doing whatever. Of course, the whole time, the entire salon was enjoying the presence of my sweet granddaughter. Angelina's service (my granddaughter): Yeah, she got service too. Lol! She picked her pretty sparkling pink nail polish and got set up at the station next to me. I think his name is Scott, that did Angel's nails. I cannot say enough good things about him! He engaged her in conversation while he buffed and clipped her little nails. Their conversation kept us all in stitches! He made sure to give her a full two coats of "so much pretty", as well as a top coat! Excellent service! Next came Angel's toe service, which I wasn't planning, necessarily, because other salons have just done her fingernails, and then appeared to be done with the cheap little service of catering to a tiny girl. Mind you, I've always been willing to pay whatever they want to charge for services on my baby girl! Lol... I don't know the lady's name who painted the toes, but she is so super sweet, and like everyone else, she engaged Angel in conversation while we all tried to translate her answers to questions....Angel doesn't talked completely fluently yet. They did a better job than I do understanding some of her statements! Anyway, they asked her what color she wanted, and she said blue, so the lady picked this beautiful blue that happens to match Blue of Blue's Clues, which Angel is still excited about! It was a repeat of the amazing service...buffing, gently clipping, two full coats with a top coat, etc. She even watched Angel as the polish dried (like literally watched paint dry!) to make sure she didn't mess it up. My little princess was treated as if she was THEIR little princess! All said and done, they only charged me $12 for it. I would have gladly paid more, so I just made sure to tip well. I would have tipped $100 if I could! I know this review is lengthy, but I am always looking for detailed reviews before I spend my hard earned money on a "treat". Before our services were even half done, I had made up my mind that I will never go to another salon again, it is First Star for me forever! I live in Lee's Summit. I work in NKC. They are in Western Shawnee. It is worth every bit of the drive out there!!! One last note... One of my biggest peeves with nail salons is that the majority are not English speaking, and they carry on conversations with other workers, sometimes yelling across the salon in their native tongue, and it makes me uncomfortable, feeling like an outsider. I just feel that if you run a business, you should speak the language of your clientele, wherever the location, at least enough to communicate properly. How else can a customer know they are being heard? At First Nail, I had no problem communicating, and I'm even bad with thick accents. Lol.. I cannot think of one single negative thing about this place. I saw all customers being catered to and walking out very happy! Seriously, I want to just go hang out with these people! I can't say enough good things about this place! I have searched far and wide around Shawnee and the KC area to find a place that does good, long-lasting dip nails and First Star was by far the best! The first time I went they stayed on for 2 weeks with absolutely NO lifting--I would have kept them on but got them redone because i was getting professional pictures taken. I could tell the gentleman that worked with me was unhappy. He was in such a rush to be done that all of my nails are different sizes. I got a full set and my natural nail are showing through on several nails, I have large dips. Many of them are lifting and it's been 4 days. All of places I've been before they did more prep work on the nail, like an alcohol or remover to get the oil off. I've been to this place several times. They usually do great work. This is the first time I've been since I've had psoriasis. I had a spa pedicure and manicure. The gal who did my pedicure and manicure, Cookie is her name, looked at my legs like I had leprosy. Despite the fact that I told her what my condition was and that it wasn't contagious she refused to massage my calfs with lotion where the psoriasis was. I told her it wouldn't hurt her and asked her if she would she please put lotion on those areas as well. She was wearing gloves like they always do. She said they don't massage that high on the calfs. They have before and others that were there that day got full calf massages from other technicians. She dabbed a little bit of lotion on those areas just as she was finishing but didn't massage the lotion in. I left feeling embarrassed, humiliated and very, very self-conscious. I don't know that I'll be back. It took a lot to keep from crying right there. read more

Boy did they see us coming ... we emphasized that we did NOT want 'gel' polish, just regular nail polish for two G-Daughters (... not much nail to polish to begin with). I was charged $20/G-Daughter ... JUST POLISH ... no manicure; no gel. Silly me, I paid it ... plus gratuity!!! (After leaving the shop, the young man polishing my youngest G-Daughter's nails had cut into her skin beyond the cuticle.) After we met my third G-Daughter for lunch, we all went back to First Star Nail for her nails to be polished. The staff directed her to different color selection ... not until I paid for her nails being polished for $8 ... I asked why the huge difference in cost (they were ALL on their cellphones ... they informed me '... we asked for gel earlier' ... SERIOUSLY!!!!
