First of all I want to give a shout out to my Yelp friend Kellie K. - If I had not read her mouthwatering review I would have never visited this pie nirvana and my life would always have a void in it. My problem with my review is that I can't decide if I love this Cafe because it is such a great part of our human ecosystem or because everything in it tastes so freaking good. OK, first why your brain will love them. Their mission is their kitchen which provides food to the hungry. This is not shouted at you, I found out by digging around in the reviews and on their website. I was so impressed. Also, they have all kinds of wonderful repurposed furniture in the cafe which is charming and saved land fill space. They serve everything on Art fair type pottery that will be reused. They serve Alterra coffee which started in Milwaukee and is now also available in Illinois. It is a company like this Cafe which gives you hope that man is not inherently evil but instead good and we are not doomed for a dystopian Mad Max future. So your brain says wow, I love them. Now why your mouth and stomach will love them. Everything is delicious. Period. I mean it, like amazingly delicious. I had the OccuPIE Andersonville lovely of brown sugar custard, dried cherries, oats, pepitas and dark chocolate on a traditional crust. OUTSTANDING! My husband had a slice of the cherry pie and when he realized there was only one whole cherry pie left he leaped out of his seat and bought it. Yep, it's that earthshattering, life alteringly good. Is it worth a trip to Andersonville? Only if you want to save the planet Earth and have the best pie of your life. Otherwise, no. read more

First Slice makes the best sweet potato pie I have ever eaten. EVER. Forget your pumpkin pies and pecan pies, all you need for the holidays are many FSPC's sweet potato praline pies. SWEET POTATO PRALINE. You heard me. Not only do you get awesome sweet potato filling (far superior to pumpkin, IMO)... but there is this layer of crunchy, nutty, sweet praline right above the crust. Heavenly. I already pre-ordered 2 large ones for this week (...and maybe a few other small pies. Don't tell my doctor). Plus, it is always such a pleasure stopping in here. Everyone is SO nice. Great mission too. What other reasons do you need to buy pie here? read more

I don't even like pie but First Slice managed to change my mind. Their Michigan sour cherry pie is a game-changer. It's so delicious you don't even need to heat it up to enjoy -- eat it cold right out of the fridge and you'll be very satisfied. Even the key lime pie is delicious (and I hate key lime). Aside from their regular fruit pies, the cheesecakes are a little slice of heaven. To date I've tried the pumpkin, strawberry and blueberry -- ALL of them were delicious! These folks definitely aren't joking around when it comes to cheesecake (or pie). read more

I'll preface this review with the fact that I prefer a lighter flavor profile, and this extends to desserts as well--I tend to like less sweet desserts or desserts where the sweet is well balanced with bitter or sour flavors. I got two slices of pie--one, the famous Michigan cherry, and the other, the raspberry balsamic with pear. I thought both of them were far too sweet; so much in fact, that I couldn't have more than one tiny bite of each without breaking up the sweetness with coffee. I was expecting both to have a bit of a tang and was especially disappointed to find that the raspberry balsamic/pear pie came off as a raspberry only pie. I was also pretty disappointed with the crust; perhaps I had let it sit for too long since I had it to-go, but the crust was on the thin side and lacked the buttery flakiness that's typical at other pie shops. Quite disappointed--friendly service and cute shop, but just way too much sugar in the pies for me. read more

Hold on a sec... Just one more bite.... OK, so their Apple Pie is what I would like to call "un-forking-believable." By that, I mean I almost put down my fork, and buried my face in pie. It's good. I have an upcoming move which will place me near the First Slice off the Francisco Brown Line stop, and I can't be more excited. Friendly service, good coffee and hot chocolate (my fave), and when you hand over your hard earned dollars, the profits go to a good cause. Can it get better than that? I suppose they could put in a pinball machine... Keep up the good work. read more

I'm so happy I stumbled upon this place because they have a few really great vegan items or items that can be made vegan. I had the goat cheese and roasted veggie sandwich - the goat cheese. Yum! I think it was the first time I had pear in a sandwich, but damn it was a pretty awesome first time experience. I also brought some family members there and they were raving about the salads and wraps. As for vegan items they have vegan salads and a tomato soup that can be made vegan...along with a few other things. The only downfall is that they don't have any vegan pies = ( Although they do have vegan carrot cake...One of the workers said that they were working on concocting a vegan pie soon so hopefully that happens, because if it does I'll buy it!!! P.S. it's also a great place to bring non veg friends/family read more

Stopped in to try some pie but, unfortunately, they didn't serve any of my personal flavors. The guy working was really sweet and the shop is so cute abus servemore than just pie. It was summertime but, I noticed right away that it was extremely warm inside. Instead, I settled for some of their granola and it's actually pretty darn good. My boyfriend decided on a slice of their chocolate pie. It was small and he says that it was just okay. I probably won't return for pie because they don't sell what I like. However, I will go back for their organic granola. read more

I'm a pumpkin pie connoisseur, and while I'm really proud of my personal recipe, this one blew mine out of the water. The crust was a leeeedle squishy, but the pumpkiny part was incredible and I will be back. My friend loved the gluten-free options. Methinks this will be a chubby winter. read more

I REALLY loved going here the other day. I had walked by right after eating about 2 weeks ago and after checking out the offerings of pie, salads, sandwiches .... I was determined to go back XTRA hungry!! The perfect day - nice weather, outdoor seating, no noisy brats or undesirables asking for handouts... then it got better - MY HARVEST SALAD arrived ... just DELISH... I licked the bowl! I decided that I would continue being a lil piglet and stuff some 'coffee pie' in my mouth to really seal the deal. Yum! I will def. be back to try each and every one of those damn pastries, cookies, pies, salads and whatever else u have... that COUCH POTATO cookie w/ the chips in it.... THAT HAS MY NAME ALL OVER IT!!! ;) read more

First Slice is an awesome little cafe over in Andersonville that specializes in about a dozen or so different kinds of pies and standard coffee shop fare you can find practically anywhere (salads, grain salads, coffee, tea, etc.) It doesn't have the most ostentatious sign or advertising out front, but it is SO worth the visit every time. The staff are extremely friendly, the ambiance is very chill and it's just so lighthearted. There's no pretentiousness to be found within any inch of the shop and the pies they serve are made correctly and deliciously. I tried a slice of the coffee toffee pie and the flavor of both the caramel-y toffee and medium-roast (arguably slightly burned) coffee creams were outstanding, especially when eaten together with the chocolate cookie crust. It never got loud the entire day I spent working there, and the only time it really got somewhat busy was during the lunch hour. That said though, there were no interruptions in sight and I was able to work the day away with ease. I would happily eat here again and even spend the day here again. It's warm, friendly, comfortable, and no one tries to get in anyone's way. Pair that with a lusciously thick slice of pie and that'll put a smile on anyone's face! read more

Love first slice's motto to help fight hunger. By supporting them you are supporting them to serve families in need with quality foods with quality ingredients. They've got many delicious pies to choose from... strawberry, apple, blueberry, coffee, mint chocolate... goes on .. We opted for a small blueberry handpie -- same delicious pie but in finger food form! It was just lightly sweet with a delicious buttery yet crispy crust. I wanted SECONDS! Also grabbed a latte which had a more stiff taste than Kopi's latte. Wish we were able to try their other homemade pies, sandwiches!!! read more

I wish I could give First Slice 4 stars(it's ever so, so close to that point, but a hair short), but I didn't care for the prices they charge for a single slice of pie, and their food items. It's fine though, since once in a while I can handle the sticker shock to my wallet. I do agree with the person who said the brownies were good, but I wouldn't say great. And I wish the size of their brownies was a little bigger, and also weren't so dry, for the price they charge($2). Only had ordered a non-pie item here once ironically(duck confit and mozzarella sandwich), and it wasn't as good as the person who wrote about it in one of the local magazines(TimeOut or Chicago Magazine?) said. I hope to have better luck with their non-pie lunch/dinner menu, on another visit. Other than the fact that I agree that more often than I'd prefer that I see their pies in the cooler look liquidy, they do have good pies. The OccuPie being their hidden gem pie, if you ask me. And to me, their French Silk, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Key Lime, and their fruit pies are the best ones to get IMO. Do like how their Key Lime has a lighter and less sugary taste to it, vs. the version at Hoosier Mama Pie Shop(and as much as I like Hoosier Mama pies, as well. wish their shop was closer, so that it'd be easier for me to compare their pies vs. First Slice). I'll have to try First Slice's Sweet Potato Praline pie soon. I'll add the 4th star, once I can better figure out how their lunch/dinner menu is like(and hopefully order something better off of that). read more

A couple of weeks back I was invited to a Thanksgiving dinner and asked to bring dessert. Not being a baker myself (and let's face it, being just a tad bit lazy) I looked for a place in Chicago where I could buy a homemade pumpkin pie. Purchasing one from a chain or a grocery store was not an option. Quality is importante to me as is supporting small businesses--especially ones that give so much back to the community such as this one. I found First Slice through a Google search and spent some time on their website. I looked at the list of pies and asked the host who invited me to his Thanksgiving which pie he preferred. He said the pumpkin cheesecake sounded best. I could have ordered online. In fact, the website suggested that all Thanksgiving pies be ordered beforehand. But I thought it best to taste-test the pie before bringing it to dinner. So about 10 days ago, I had dinner with a friend on Clark Street in Andersonville and suggested First Slice for dessert. I ate a slice of cheesecake and promptly placed my Thanksgiving Day order for pick-up the afternoon before. The earlier reviewer's mention of "bad planning" is a bit troublesome. I look at it this way: I live in the third largest city in the country. I don't expect a small company to have a huge supply of product on hand the day before a holiday feast. In fact, both online and in the store there was information at least as far back as two weeks ago, asking customers to pre-order Thanksgiving pies. There are plenty of chain grocery stores around with tables piled high with factory-produced pies where people who didn't plan properly can grab a pie the day before (or even the day of) Thanksgiving. ;-) read more

We came with another couple at 8:00 on Saturday night (they're open until 10). We ordered coffee (to go with the pie we wanted to order) and were told there was no coffee because it was slow and they didn't want to make a pot! We were offered espresso, but we didn't want espresso!! I don't care how good the pie is - to be too lazy to make coffee 2 hours before closing is unAmerican and unforgiveable. When we gave a pie order the guy behind the counter refused to get it until we came up and paid in advance. Did he think we were going to run out? The pie may be great but the service is so laughably bad we won't be back. read more

After doing dinner in Edgewater we were looking for a good desert spot. We stumbled into a gem. First Slice is small and cozy spot that was perfect. I ordered the chocolate peanut butter pie (slice). This was the most decadent pie that I have ever had. If I ever did a "best things I ever ate show" this place would be featured for this one pie. The top layer was dark chocolate with the middle being a solid block of peanut butter (at least an inch deep) with the bottom looked like an Oreo cookie base. I was humming in pure happiness with each bite. This was so good that literally everyone in the group got the same thing. I love the fact that our close friend lives near by which means this place will be visiting on multiple occasions! Please stop by and try this out!! read more

I am here almost every morning when I am working from home, and let me tell you why: Great employees, usually quiet, inexpensive coffee and food, and a wonderful mission. To enjoy your first trip, I would suggest avoiding weekends. Weekday mornings are great - they have lovely quiche as well as pie! Also, as lunch traffic moves fast, and the kitchen guys are quick and polite, an afternoon lunch is a safe bet. For those of us who want to linger and work, stick to mornings, or a post-lunch lull. This place is mom/nanny/baby friendly, so it can be a little loud when the stroller set shows up, but beyond that it's peaceful. They are also working at getting a second air conditioner to cool it off during the summer months, so don't worry. Locals: bring your own mug, and coffee's a dollar. How great is that? And it's Alterra, roasted in Milwaukee, something that's not as familiar as local routine of Metropolis and Intelligentsia, and you Green folks can still rest easy. Also, much of their ingredients are local, some organic. They do pick some great stuff. Try a hand-pie. The savory feta and sun dried tomato is great. They're $2 Less than $5 bucks for coffee and a killer slice of apple pie, with a handmade crust and freshly made whipcream? I am so there. Favorite pie: Midsummer Night's Dream - a beautiful vanilla cream pie with strawberry preserves, graham cracker crust, and a drizzel of chocolate. Ahhhmazing. Check out their take-away meal program, and their whole take-home pies. It's what the business was founded on. This place will not beat you over the head with their humanitarian mission, but you can still feel good about going here and knowing that you are helping folks right here in Chicago. And getting some fantastic eats in the process! read more

More than just pie! Their chicken salads are fantastic! I would eat them each day if I could! The pies...are okay. Too sweet for me (and I have a sweet tooth!), the key lime pie is my current favorite. read more

Eating at First Slice just makes me feel good. It's a bright refuge from the Ashland traffic, beckoning me inside and charming me with repurposed school desks. Not surprisingly, the baked goods are delicious. I've tried a vegan cookie and the Michigan cherry pie and both were delightful. However, I was also surprised to discover that the regular food items are just as high in quality. The Harvest Salad with chickpeas, blue cheese, pears and candied pecans, is one of my favorite salads at any restaurant in Chicago. On top of all of this goodness, First Slice is a community-driven organization that serves meals to the needy and homeless, so you'll know that your money is going to a good cause. read more

One of my favorite spots for lunch. Depending on the time of day, it can be a little cramped for seating - particularly around 3pm when the hoards of Andersonville parents bring their children here for an afternoon snack and let the kiddos run wild. This is not the kind of place that you should let your kids do that, FYI. I always find myself ordering the same thing here. Cappuccino with almond milk, Michigan cherry pie, and a tuna salad sandwich. The sandwich comes with chips and a delicious salad with sliced apple and some kind of vinaigrette. Most of their sandwiches are around $7 and are very filling. For all that comes with it, I think it's a great value. They also have some charitable meal subscription services that help provide meals to local families in need. read more

Pies are spot on for when we are craving sweets. Flavors and texture are perfect. Never tried the savory goods.

Man, the service is always so great here. Every time I go in the staff is having a good time either together or with the customers and they are so ready for conversation. It's so nice to walk in somewhere with that kind of energy. From what I can tell of the many times I've gone in, the manager is always very present and supportive of his employees, and they all seem to really like being around each other. It's cool to see a small little place remain tight knit, because I've seen this spot get busy and it seems incredibly stressful. Would just like to applaud the manager once more for treating his employees so well, it seems like that can be so hard to find anymore, and having had spoken with some of the staff before just secondhand over an order, I know they all think very highly of him and each other. Thanks, First Slice. You're awesome. read more

Just stopped in here on a whim while in the area and grabbed some pie to-go. They had about 8 or so pies in their fresh case and several others in their freezer case. I like that you can buy just a slice, a whole pie or they have some mini-pies available (but not for every kind they have that day). I snagged a mini version of the Blueberry Blackberry Balsamic pie...it was quite good and the crust was perfect. read more

Stopped in here for dessert. This delightful place makes me want to break out in song! Family and I had peppermint pie, blueberry cheesecake, French silk and key lime. Like Jenna in "Waitress," this place made our souls sing, "Baby don't you cry, gonna make a pie, gonna make a pie with a heart in the middle." !! read more

Just had pie here last night with sister and daughter. This place is a treasure, it feels like you are eating in someone's kitchen in an old comfy house. The blueberry peach streusel pie was to die for. My daughter demolished her French silk pie , so I think she kind of liked it too! My only concern with giving such a positive review, is that it will be even harder to get a table there! read more

So of course I have to try the tabasco pie and something else like the key lime pie. I have have be come really picky since I travel so much in the south, but it wasn't that great to me. Both crust was really thin and the filling was super sweet. The tabasco pie was not full of favor but it had hints of cinnamon and it reminded more of the old candy classic Hot Tamale, you get a kick at the end of each bite was but it was more cayenne than tabasco to me. read more

will need to return for the sandwiches/salads... because the pie was just "ok". the "basura" cookie was much tastier than the pies- we tried the french silk (way too rich) and the apple (i think it needed to be a la moded). we only stopped in for take away dessert but i was very intrigued by all the vegi options for salads, sandwiches and soups -- definitely want to try a full lunch next time. read more

Not a lot of selection an hr before they closed, pie tasted amazing though, hot chocolate was average $3 for an average cup of hot chocolate is a little over priced, definitely expected something more to match the amazing pies read more

Pie is great!! But a fore warning that the ordering via this app is not an option, they no longer have an app to confirm your order. I just did a pop in but what I could tell was it clean, service was good( short encounter) and they honored my purchase. read more

This location is tiny. I cannot really hold it against First Slice for the fact that their customers take up tables with laptops and stuff. I think if you only have six tables that you should have a limit of how long people should sit and take up space during peak hours. I would have loved to sit and eat a piece of pie, but since there was no space...I opted for a cookie and coffee instead. The cookie was wonderful, the coffee was really great too. They also have some fantastic looking salads! I will definately be back to visit this place (and eat some pie) during non peak hours. read more

Local, quality food, great pies and I love their charity mission. Going to try their food subscription service this month. Sounds better than Blue Apron for all the above reasons. read more

Very cute atmosphere and the best pumpkin pie that beats my Grandmas recipe!

Wow the blueberry cheesecake pie is to die for and it is now one of my favorite pies of all time. I love their pies!!! read more

First Slice Pie Cafe - Delicious! - Cafes Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

The chocolate raspberry cheesecake will bring me back again and again. With a quaint atmosphere and cashiers who are just the right amount of snooty for working in a pie shop, I'd still probably get my pie to go. I'm intrigued by the sandwiches. But mostly the cheesecake. read more

Driving by on the first warm night of spring, this storefront looked so appealing that we did a U-turn on Ashland to stop here on an impulse. Good decision. In the front window a giant paper mache slice beckons you inside. Pale mint green walls, chalkboard menus, and a mix of old school (literally) chairs and tables set the mood. We didn't realize it was newly opened when we walked in, and at first it was quiet but a steady stream of visitors made it lively within minutes. Out of the three of us, I had coffee -- a great cup. Another had the French Silk Pie and said she'd ride the bus up Ashland from her Boystown apt. to eat another slice - it was that good. The third had a brownie embedded with chunks of toffee? something fabulous whatever it was. Great food and the staff were friendly and helpful. Somehow it felt like a small piece of hometown slice-of-Americana life plunked down in Chicago. A worthwhile side trip if you're visiting Andersonville and staying primarily on Clark to eat and shop -- make the effort to scoot a block over for your First Slice. It won't be your last. read more

So...i got to First Slice, Andersonville 10 minutes before closing on a Tuesday night. At a lot of food places, it's super annoying to get customers right before closing since everyone is trying to clean up and get ready to close. but, the workers were SO SO FRIENDLY-- i didn't feel rushed at all. so thank you so much First Slice! plus, tuesdays they have a band perform- from the last 5 minutes that i caught, they were great too! oh.. and the pies (chocolate cream, coffee toffee, and French Silk) were so so so tasty, not overly sweet, perfectly creamy and crunchy and delicious. everything you would hope for in a pie. read more

Great bakery options!!! The pies are all fresh and are sold in slices or whole pies. I admit the prices are a bit high but it's all for the support of our local independent bakers plus they taste AMAZING. Love this little joint. I used to live up the street and would have to force myself to not go there. Their pies are excellent!!

Quite possibly the friendliest staff I've encountered in a long time at a Chicago establishment, to the point I wish I could have remembered the name of the gentleman who served us so I could give him a shout-out here. We went to First Slice Pie Cafe on a whim one Sunday afternoon after mulling over our lunch options. I was first introduced to First Slice through Lill Street Studio, and blown away by their tasty baked goods and savories. Thus, I was fairly confident we'd hit a home run at the newly opened cafe. Sure enough, First Slice delivered on our expectations. I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich, which came with a side salad. Both were very tasty. The one regret I have was not walking out with a slice of pie. My husband ordered the chicken and blue cheese sandwich, which was also pretty good. I'll definitely go back and try other items on the menu. read more
