Quite literally the worst Property Management company in existence. They only care about taking money from the parents of college kids--no care for regular, every day tenants. Upon first moving in, the apartment was filthy--yet it was our responsibility to note all damages and dirtiness due to First Site's lack of care for providing clean, safe rental units. I'm talking down to every individual pin hole, nail hole, scuff, scratch, etc. Disregard the fact that First Site didn't fix these issues after the LAST tenant moved out...really. Throughout our short stay, our upstairs neighbor routinely had parties and despite our complaints to First Site (documented), no action was taken. Upon moving out, we were promised a specific date and time to surrender occupation of our apartment unit. Maintenance arrived three hours earlier than the scheduled time and had already completed most of their "repairs" by the time I arrived 30 MINUTES prior to the scheduled appointment. We had left behind a few cleaning supplies to make sure the place was better than when we found it, and when I arrived the maintenance team was literally in the process of throwing away our PERSONAL items into the garbage--hours before our scheduled appointment! As if that wasn't bad enough, they replaced a pair of blinds because they weren't functioning, even though prior to their arrival they were just fine. They charged us a "cleaning fee" for having to remove our PERSONAL BELONGINGS from the unit. What a joke! The dispute process is useless, the entire organization is disjointed and has no ability to communicate. I had to drive to their maintenance warehouse just to get a copy of our move-in inspection list. Horrible experience, horrible company, for your own good--stay away. read more

If you are a student deciding where to live, make sure the realty company you sign with is not First Site. This company takes advantage of inexperienced college students. I had a 12 month lease and stayed at a property that wasn't even new and updated to begin with. The house was rundown and extremely old. Most of the damages of the house were already present because of how old it was but we got charged an extremely large amount to repair damages that were already present to begin with. I cannot emphasize this enough, TAKE PICTURES AND RECORD every inch, accessory, item in the property. They will find any and every reason to charge you for anything they find wrong with the property. I even got charged when they bought new mattress's ! There is also several issues regarding privacy. Make sure you know your tenant rights before moving into the property. They should be giving you notices before entering your property. When I lived at the property they would come and show the property to potential new tenants without notifying me or my roommates. We would be woken up very early in the morning to random people walking through the property and a First Site employee showing the property at the worst times. They even opened our doors when we were sleeping. You can imagine it is very embarrassing to have random people looking at you when you are still in your sleeping attire. Very unprofessional and easily avoidable by notifying tenants. When we put in work orders for things that didn't work it would take them weeks to come out to properties to fix, or they just wouldn't be fixed at all. I didn't have a usable microwave for 2 months regardless of how many work orders were submitted. To conclude, if you have any option besides First Site, I highly recommend you take that option. read more

Several issues regarding our bathroom and shower when we moved in as well.. took them 3 days to fix it and they told me I couldn't shower until it was fixed so I had to wait until it was convenient for them. We had several issues regarding a gas leaking from our stove and they did not come out until 4 days later because it wasn't claimed as an emergency. They just told us not to use it? How pathetic. A few weeks later our fridge stopped working and they said it wasn't an emergency either and someone will be out when they can. $150+ worth of food spoiled and they did absolutely nothing. Our building dryer (one washer/dryer for 8 units) has not worked since I moved in over the summer, it does not dry even half loads of clothes and often fills the lower level hallway with condensation and smoke because the vent comes unattached. Maintenance has been contacted multiple times and all they do is wrap duct tape around it and say it's "fixed". The maintenance person who did this also admitted he was not qualified or certified in HVAC or any related area, he was just a "general handyman". On one occasion my neighbors and I had to call the Normal fire department for fear of the building catching on fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. When notified through emails, calls, and messages in the resident portal, First Site has either ignored or brushed off our concerns. They continuously say that they are sending their unqualified maintenance out to "take a look at it", but nothing is actually ever done. We have asked multiple times for them to just update the washer and dryer but nothing has happened. I haven't had a horrible experience with First Site in any other aspect, but this lack of communication and respect has made me not want to resign. I signed with First Site my first year at ISU and just as I expected, they took both mine and my roommate's full security deposits and charged us each an additional $80 for "cleaning". The pictures they send you of why they are charging you are actually a joke. TINY holes in the walls from thumbtacks, scuffs on the OUTSIDE of a door (mind you, our apartment led right to the outside so that's out of anyone's control), literally the most petty of things! I then made the huge mistake of signing with them again for a second year at a new building. Prior to moving in I took pictures of everything in my room because I refused to lose my security deposit again. WELL, i guess I should have taken pictures of every inch of the apartment because they find anything and everything to charge you for. My roommate lived in the same apartment the year prior and fought for a new couch the first time she signed as well as when she resigned for a second year. She was rejected BOTH times and what did they charge us for upon move out? THE COUCHES. This year they took $800 worth of security deposits and then wanted an ADDITIONAL $360 from all four of us. We disputed the charges and they reduced it a TINY bit. When my roommate called to try to continue to dispute charges, they told her the charges were final and wouldn't let her discuss it any further. I, as well as my roommates, are thoroughly disappointed in how we were treated in our last year living in Normal. PLEASE be cautious when choosing a place to sign!!! read more

First site does not care about their tenants at all. They're horrible with communication and all they care about is getting as much money out of you as possible. I'll keep this short but the first apartment I rented through them was OK but when we went to move out, we left the apartment in perfect condition. Even after spending 3 hours deep cleaning the apartment before moving out, they still had the audacity to keep $200 of our deposit for "heavy cleaning". Also, when we moved in there was a huge hole in our couch and when we moved out they tried to charge us $400 for a new couch. TAKE PICTURES OF EVERYTHING WHEN YOU MOVE IN AND OUT! In my new apartment they told us it was ready to be moved into, but when we got there the stove didn't work, the doors didn't close because of a bad paint job, our internet was hooked up wrong, some of our light switches don't work, the back door barely opens, and there was so much more. We had to call maintenance at least 7 times within the first two weeks of being here (and it took forever for them to even respond). The latest thing that happened was the huge fire at Sugar Creek. Luckily, my apartment is on the other side of the building so my stuff was safe, but I was gone for the weekend and had no idea that the fire had even happened. First Site didn't notify anyone of what had happened! There's a news article about the whole thing that says that the fire was started by building maintenance and even though it was First Site's fault that 12 units were damaged by the fire, they moved the residents to new apartments with no furniture AND they're making them pay new rent! This is absolutely disgusting and First Site should be sued for the crap they're pulling with their residents. DO NOT SIGN WITH THEM. Seriously, it's been nothing but bad experiences with this company. Save yourself some headaches and SAVE YOUR MONEY. The apartment itself was decent for a college student. However, don't bother cleaning your apartment when you move out. Spent hours cleaning our daughter's apartment with her according to their guidelines (and even better than what they instructed). There was a scheduled inspection time that the residents are allowed to be present for. Our daughter showed up at least half an hour before that time and they had already walked through it. Whoever "AC" is on the inspection sheet was either blind, sees spots or was instructed to just mark random things as not being cleaned so that the company can charge a cleaning fee. They have a dispute process, which is a joke because they basically say they're still charging a cleaning fee. When you try to email a manager, they ignore you and if you try to call to talk to a manager, they have some excuse why they can't talk and tell the poor receptionist to tell you that dispute responses stand. Oh, did i mention that when she moved into this apartment, the company claimed they have the "cleanest college apartments in town" but we had to do our own cleaning because it was filthy? That alone tells us they charge cleaning fees but don't actually clean. Whoever moved into that apartment after our daughter-you got one clean apartment thanks to us. But First Site-what a joke. If you think this is a good place to live because of all the positive reviews, HA they hand out free gift cards to people who leave them 5 stars and a positive review. When my roomatate and I moved in we had a torn up couch, however in their paperwork it said it was in perfect condition, and made my roommate sign a form saying everything in the apartment was perfect before she even saw the place. Now I'm paying $744 to replace it. The only thing these people are interested in is squeezing every little penny they can out of you. When paying over $850 a month to rent an apartment from them you would think they could at least treat you with respect. Not to mention after paying thousands of dollars to live there my ceiling began to leaking and they way they helped me was but cutting a giant hole in the ceiling prior to me moving out and then charged me $500 over my security deposit to "clean" the mess their maitnance workers made. I've always scoffed at negative Yelp reviews like people had nothing better to do than write horrible reviews. But with First Site I can see why people do that. Do not rent with First Site. A lot of people will tell you they have the "nicest" apartments on campus but it's all a show. I rented with 1010 Lofts and with a hefty $645 rent, you'd think the apartment would be nice. Everything is made cheap and falls apart, and you will be made to pay for it at the end of the year. Cracks in the ceiling, drawers in the bathroom that fall off and get super glued back on instead of actually fixed, crappy paint jobs, etc. We literally got charged for a hair in the shower. You will get charged for anything and everything. There is a reason they are so infamous around town for being one of the worst companies to rent with. Not only that, but when I first moved in, it took them three months to get me a working mail key. In between that time, they gave me THREE different keys that weren't even the right one. I had to go back and forth to the main office, the maintenance building, and my apartment so many times only to be let down time and time again with the wrong key. I was told so many times the problem would be fixed but it was only fixed after my roommates and I pestered them every day until they finally decided to make us a new key. At least the people in the maintenance office are kind. The people in the main office are super unfriendly, as if coming in there to ask a question is bothering them, even though that's their job. Sometimes I left there feeling like an idiot for asking a legitimate question. I will not be leasing from them again. Don't expect to see your security deposit. They make things look nice on the outside and are slow to fix issues. I reported that my bathroom sink drawer was falling off and no one came to fix it. I'm not a mean person and I'll give everyone a chance but I'm extremely disappointed with First Site and I'm so excited to take my business elsewhere. Thank god I have a lawyer intervene otherwise I would be broke. I have also had many friends whose: roofs caved in on them, apartments had been broken into and then fixed with a piece of wood and their employees entering your apartment whenever they please; like while you're in the shower and they open the bathroom door. I lived at First Site for two years and never had a problem with them until move-out. I had chosen the roommate match option and signed an individual lease. When it came time to move out of my apartment after graduating. One of the roommates that THEY chose (I had no say and never met the girl prior to her moving in with me and my two other roommates) to live with me decided to not clean her room or her bathroom for move-out and they split HER damage and cleaning fees between the other three roommates who cleaned their own rooms and the common areas. First Site said "they can't take the fees out of her deposit" and that they "have" to split the fees all four ways even though I never signed a joint lease, I signed an individual one. They took $88.12 out of my security deposit for damages that I didn't make and cleaning that I should not be responsible for. Because the person they chose to put into my apartment is some random person, she is no longer responding to any of the roommates and we are all out $88.12. Don't rent from this company unless you want to lose money. I filed an appeal through them and explained who lived in what room and that it was all the one roommates doing and they claimed I signed a joint lease when I have proof of my lease and that it's individual. Disappointed after a 2-year rental. First Site did not keep their initial protocols (move-in inspection) at the beginning (walk through with renter/parent). Good thing I walked through with the girls and documented the apartment condition. Apartment was filthy. First site was notified (in writing) at time of move in and required documentation. Did not offer to have cleaned prior to move in; even though they advised it should be in "move in" condition. We spent an 8-hour day (3 people) cleaning so that the girls could move into a clean apartment. At move out time, charged $15.74/person for removal of Command strips; and a $55/per person cleaning fee for "general cleaning". Did get back $129 out of the $200 security deposit. Move Out: There were claims that First Site provided a "move out preparation checklist", which was not correct. They also expressed that a move out inspection had been scheduled by the residents. This as well was inaccurate. The apartment was in a great location and had been newly acquired 2 years ago. Just disappointing that the company wouldn't do the right thing. I was aware from the general comments in the community about the local apartment rental companies. I lived with first site over 2 years ago and I'm still pisssed about what they did. They provided FAKE pictures of broken blinds and charged us when we moved out. Absolutely positively 100000% none of our blinds were broken. They Took our seecurity deposits and charged us a fee and our apartment was SPOTLESS. I got to my apartment and the toilet was broken, the AC was broken, half of the F-ing appliances are broken. First site is awful. It took me a whole week to get the WiFi working. Metronet was so much more helpful. When I called them, 3 times might I add, they were telling me how many people called just that day from first site about wifi. FOUR OF THEM WERE IN MY BUILDING! If you call first site they'll just tell you to call someone else. They are the worst!!!!!! SO MANY ISSUES! I don't even know where to begin. I ignored most of the bad reviews because I am not a student and lived off campus in the Creekside residential townhomes for 2 years, thinking maybe I would have a better experience with them. I was wrong. Skip to the 3rd red flag paragraph for the biggest reason not to trust them. First red flag... The guy that I originally met with to talk about seeing a unit there was Zach and he told me he would meet me over at the unit to go look at it... instead I drove there and waited 10 more minutes for some college schmuck they hired to show it to me when he knew ZERO information about the place! He told me the wrong information about the pet fee and that the fireplace was electric when it's not. 2nd red flag was when we renewed our lease and they offered a list of things we could get for free and to pick one as a reward for renewing for another whole year. Well we didn't need any of the stuff on that list but our kitchen vinyl floor was pretty scuffed up and torn so we asked for that to be replaced. The guy (I think it was tj) who we renewed with said he would talk it over with his boss and the maintenance people and get back to us. A little over a week later a guy from First Site came to take pictures of the flooring and then silence. We didn't hear anything more from them for about 3 weeks. So my boyfriend called their maintenance department to ask if it was going to happen or not and the guy that he talked to knew nothing about it at all. Then about another 2 weeks go by and I was 8 months pregnant and taking a shower and I get out and my dog was going nuts because strangers were in my house and moving my kitchen furniture around. It wasn't even anybody from the first site company there... it was a couple of guys from a flooring company saying they were there to redo my kitchen floor. I had NO warning whatsoever if it was even going to happen or not and then I'm naked in the shower and random guys just show up and start tearing apart my kitchen. 3RD and BIGGEST red flag happened not once but TWICE when First Site maintenance left their master key in my neighbors door when nobody was home! My favorite neighbors who became my friends were on vacation and I was dog sitting for them and the first site maintenance crew came over to fix something at my neighbors house and left their MASTER key copy in the door with the front doors wide open and left lights on inside the house! The second time was after those neighbors moved out and I knew the unit was vacant and was out walking my dog at 9pm at night and saw both front doors wide open AGAIN with the keys in the door and the lights on and no maintenance crew there! And it gets even better... then when we called first site maintenance to tell them about it, they tried to cover it up because he didn't want his friend to get fired. 4th and final issue was that when we moved out, they were super nit picky about everything and even though my carpets were clean and I cleaned them myself with a spot carpet cleaner, because I didn't have proof of a receipt for the carpet cleaner they said that they are going to still charge me anyways to get them cleaned. They definitely were not clean when I moved in! I'm supposed to get about half of my security deposit back, but I'm skeptical of how much they'll actually give back to me. We took real care of our stuff but the place was infested with bedbugs! They came in I would say 10 different times and the bedbugs would not die! If I could give First Site 0 stars I would. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this company is the absolute worst. I've lived with them and Young America and I can confidently say that Young America is 100x better. This is your sign not to lease with them- please do not waste your money!!!!!!!! NOT ONLY did my property (207 W Willow) have a horrible bug problem, but every single other resident that I talked to also confirmed that their apartment was INFESTED. I filed many maintenance requests to help get rid of the roaches and only once did someone come out- all of the other requests were just "resolved" despite no one even coming into our apartment or contacting us. The only time they came to our apartment, the worker sprayed our bathroom and we saw even more bugs than before. We tried to contact our leasing agent Ulises and he responded extremely rudely, then promised someone would be out to help the next day and- big surprise- no one came!! The level of unprofessionalism is truly unmatched here. Ignoring the horrible roach problem, they're also really untrustworthy. They will do absolutely anything to get you to sign--- DO NOT GIVE IN!!!! When we met with them, we explained how we needed 3 parking spots (the apartment came with 2 despite being a 3-person). He said that it would be no problem and that we could definitely get a third spot (for a fee, of course, but we did not mind paying as it was a necessity). Come move-in time, we kept calling First Site wondering when the fee would be included in our rent, and the front desk workers were no help and denied that we had requested a third spot. Since Ulises is the one that promised the extra spot, I reached out to him directly to see what was up. He said that there actually weren't any extra spots in our lot and that there never were any............. Despite promising us one!!!!!! His suggestion was to spend a ridiculous amount of money to park blocks away in uptown. We made it quite clear that we couldn't sign without an extra spot, so it became clear that they only told us that so we would agree to live there..... scum! Instead, we had to knock on doors in the Young America building behind us and ask to buy an extra spot off of someone. The whole thing was ridiculous because they made us feel like we were crazy and were completely unhelpful. It goes without saying that their apartments are much shittier than they seem online or in tours. We never had a coffee table- they tried to tell us that we did, but we did not- and all of the "renovations" they made before move-in were horribly done. Paint drippings were all over the floor and heaters. The bathroom wasn't sealed properly and every maintenance request was ignored. Don't worry- they still charged us for it though! As far as deposits go, good luck EVER getting yours back!! We cleaned our apartment until it was spotless and still only got 30 of out 300 dollar deposit back due to cleaning charges and a missing key fob and bedroom key----- our building did not use key fobs and we actually had an extra bedroom key. Keep in mind that the apartment was filthy when we moved in- there was dust everywhere and a sock under one of our beds. The state we left it in was 100x better than how it was originally, so I highly doubt anyone was cleaning that place after we left. If you've read this whole review- please, please, please, please, please do not sign with this monstrous company. Young America is better. They're not the best, but they're better. They seem friendly at first, but when move out time comes around, they absolutely screw their residents over. After taking extremely good care of our apartment and performing extensive cleaning at the end of the year, we were charged $700 for "heavy cleaning" and painting. Residents are not present for the move-out inspection and it is very clear that they are looking/creating problems, just to charge their residents more. In addition to move-out inspections, they are very slow for maintenance and many move-in/move-out procedures are poorly executed and delayed. This is the worst company I have ever encountered in my life. They will move you into a dirty uncleaned apartment and take weeks and multiple calls to fix the many things that will break in your apartment. This company has zero respect for its customers. And the owner was by far the worst. Why show any sense of customer service when you have a signed contract, right first site? Signing a lease with this horrible company was single handedly the worst experience I have ever had with a business, and I paid every one of my bills on time and left my apartment cleaner than when I moved in. This company is beyond horrible. A family member was a tenant of one of their properties, together with several roommates. First Site failed to fix substantial defects in the unit, including faulty HVAC, a window that could not be closed or locked (causing security concerns), a broken stove, and a broken hot water heater. In fact, the tenants had to endure a lack of hot water for three weeks. When my family member arrived in Bloomington in August to pick up his keys, First Site refused to give him the keys, despite the fact that First Site had collected three months rent from him over the summer. First Site's refusal to turn over the keys violated the lease, and we had to threaten legal action and talk to the company's attorney in order to obtain the keys. The company also engaged in abusive, bullying and harassing behavior towards the tenants. When the tenants moved out, First Site made an inaccurate demand that the tenants immediately pay First Site over $4,000, despite the fact that the tenants did not damage the property. The employees of the company are extremely rude and unprofessional. They made bullying demands of the tenants (such as pay $4,000 by 10:00 am tomorrow morning), and then they hung up the phone and refused to speak to me when I called to address the issues. As has been widely publicized by the media, First Site attempted to evict a tenant for displaying a Black Lives Matter banner on his balcony. The Illinois State University administration should be made aware of First Site's mistreatment of Illinois State students. In addition, there was a very serious fire in one of First Site's buildings that is under investigation. I strongly recommend that parents find alternative housing for their students. read more

I would highly advise staying away from First Site. They have decent properties, but their customer service is atrocious. I spoke to Ulysses on the phone, and he was extremely rude to me, talked down to me, and told me he had no respect for me. Clearly they do not care about their tenants and have no concept of professionalism. I have not even moved into my apartment yet, and I am already so upset that I gave this terrible company my business. read more

Don't be fooled by the few false 5 star reviews.... this place is out to scam young college students. I would give 0 stars if I could!!! My son stayed here and they lied about damage to his apartment so they could scam him out of his deposit! A gentleman walked through apartment with him at end of lease and all was fine ... when it came time to send the deposit back they claim damage....his mistake was, he never took pics to prove it! Also he was warned by attorney that this is how this company does business, so watch out!!! When he moved in, place was dirty but before he left they expected carpet professionally cleaned ( even though they were cleaned just not professional) and they pull oven out to make sure that was clean ... really??? Just think twice before renting here!!! They are shysters!!! read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. DO NOT rent from this place. I have yet to move in and they're already giving me issues. I paid $200 of my $525 rent ( I know, it's a lot) late. I was charged a late fee and all, but somehow the office "never received the payment because the check bounced". And I was left with -200 in my account. I still had to pay the 200 they "never received" and the employees are very rude. SAVE YOURSELF AND DO NOT RENT FROM FIRST SITE. read more

Students Beware! Over my college experience I've had the opportunity to rent from multiple appointment companies and surprisingly this is the worst one. You will not see your security deposit after paying. Even the campus attorney warned me about this when I saw him on a separate occasion, but it was too late. I left the apartment in good condition but was still charged for everything imaginable. When trying to dispute the issues they make you run in circles until you give up on the battle. I would definitely go with another company and steer clear of first site. read more

I'm only giving this place 2 stars because it has a decent amount of space for living. It's not so bad if you pretty much do everything yourself...Although just like the rest of the reviews say, maintenance sucks. So many things are either poorly fixed or currently damaged. From items like microwaves, light fixtures, elevators, and more have issues constantly. Our microwave was broken for about 2 months before they decided to send someone to replace it. We have tenants that continuously break our gate door surrounding the apartments. the gate is one of the only things provided us safety and first site will not charge or address the individuals at all. They rather send out a mass text expecting us to find the culprits and basically turn them in or else everyone gets fined. There are cameras surrounding the entire place and they choose not to use them, I'm assuming they don't work at all. They used the excuse of lack of employees for their laziness for the dirty apartment and slow maintenance responses. I wish I had better options to move into but I had very little choices on where to sign to. I signed for another year here and they upped the price of the apartment by nearly $200. Claiming it's for the "cleaning and maintenance." This place is a horrible joke but I'm forced to laugh throughout the time here. read more

These guys did a half-assed walk through, and our apartment was still dirty. We cleaned the apartment and it looked WAY better than when they gave it to us. We're pretty sure they gave us a broken couch, but we didn't check it at move-in because it should be checked after the previous move-out. Anyway, they charge us $150 for paint, marking up my wall when I didn't even hang anything, and charging us for a couch we did not break. I should have looked at these reviews before renting from First Site. They will half-ass your move in walk-through then turn around and charge you for literally anything they can. They charged us to replace blinds because they were a little dusty. I implore you to look elsewhere for an apartment. Not to mention the kids around us partied every weekend, and we filed 2 complaints. This should have got them fined by First Site, but they didn't do anything. read more

This place has been awful to work with. At the beginning, they seemed wonderful and helpful. When it was time to resign their 4 bedroom apartment there was going to be a switch. One of the girls was going to live somewhere else and then another girl was going to move in. The 3 original girls who lived there signed their lease for the 4 bedroom. However, then COVID-19 hit and the 4th roommate (who would be new to ISU) decided to hold off signing since she wasn't sure students would be on campus in the 2020-2021 school year. First Site would do NOTHING to help out. The girls went down, explained their situation and they were told, "You didn't tell us when you signed your lease that you would need us to find a 4th roommate, so you're responsible for the 4th rent." Seriously? We have a worldwide pandemic and they would NOT help! So, these college students have been covering the 4th person's rent. All these other businesses and companies have understood hardships with COVID-19 and First Site has done absolutely NOTHING to help out. Our girls have NEVER been late in their rent, never had any issues and First Site doesn't care! I would NEVER recommend them to anybody! Also, our girls had to move one floor up and the reimbursement for the deposit is a joke. All three moms went down to the apartment and moved our girls out into the new apartment (during the pandemic) and charged our girls for things they were going to do for next tenants. We vacuumed carpets, there were NO stains on carpets but our girls got charged for cleaning carpets. (something I'm sure they do anyway) This place is a joke! read more
