Alex is a miracle worker! So many of our guests told us that we had the best first dance that they had ever seen and we owe it ALL to Alex! My husband and I decided to dance to "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" by Frankie Valli. I was a bit nervous because there are a few points in the song where the beat/tempo changes and I wasn't sure how we were going to handle that. Alex was creative and came up with the perfect choreographed dance for us in three hour-long sessions. She was patient, positive, coached us through it and when needed, was able to point out ways we could improve in a gentle way. We have some friends who got married last month who we referred to Alex -- their dance was beautiful and I know they were very happy as well! My husband was skeptical at first about dance lessons but we viewed it as a date night and he would tell you that he enjoyed it just as much as I did! I will say, Alex books up very quickly so make sure that you book your sessions in advance. We did one per month in the three months leading up to our wedding and I thought that worked well as we were able to have time to practice in between. Also, my husband had some ballroom dancing experience, pretty minimal but was able to pick up the moves fairly quickly. If you don't have any dancing experience, or if you know you won't practice at home, I would recommend more than three sessions. We are so happy we decided to take dance lessons with Alex ahead of our wedding! It was a little bit of a last minute decision (and last minute convincing of my now husband that it was necessary... haha) but Alex was able to squeeze us into her packed client schedule and help us create a sweet and refined first dance for our wedding day. We both love to dance, but had no clue how to dance appropriately to our chosen song (Better Together) without making it look like an awkward middle-school dance. In fact, we worried it couldn't be done to our song, thinking the rhythm was too fast paced. Silly us... right from the start, Alex taught us how to listen for the slower rhythm within the song and it immediately started to work perfectly. We worked with Alex over three lessons... the first two, she taught us a handful of moves each time, working with our music specifically. During our last lesson, we went through our routine that we had created and Alex helped us identify spots that could be improved and work to refine them and smooth out transitions - from the very beginning of where to stand as the dance announced, which direction to face to ensure we're using our space properly and give the best view to our guests, and how to wrap up our dance following our final dip. We had so much fun with it and it was a nice little surprise for our guests who never would have suspected a dance routine from us! It is a great memory from our day that we'll cherish forever, and we'll still break out into our dance whenever we hear our song come on. At the same time, it wasn't over the top, Dancing with the Stars intensity... it was just right for us. So brides (and grooms!), my advise is to go ahead a splurge on these lessons with Alex. I know you're probably over budget by this point in the process, but you'll definitely find the investment to be worthwhile and help make your wedding day even more special. Also, book early! I started looking into dance lessons about 10 weeks ahead of our June wedding (aka busy season in the wedding industry) and Alex's schedule was pretty much booked up. We thankfully were able to squeeze in 3 lessons (2 of which were the last two weeks ahead of the wedding)... but based off her reviews, we decided last minute lessons with her was a better option than earlier lessons with other instructors we looked into. And while we are very happy with how much we got out of our 3 lessons, I think 5 or 6 would be the sweet spot to calm all the nerves about knowing your dance on autopilot. Book Alex. Alex was amazing - we did some research about first dances for couples who were clueless about dancing and her reviews were spot on. Alex is fun, does her homework and created a dance that was easy for us to learn and execute. We were quite nervous going into it all, but after our first one hour lesson, I felt SO much better! Alex records you if you want at the end of each lesson so you can watch it at home and practice. After practicing, we would ask for slight modifications or help with certain moves and she was always so accommodating. By our 8th and final lesson (dress rehearsal) - we were just fine tuning the small things and felt so comfortable, it was really just muscle memory at that point. We are so glad and fortunate to have come across Alex and her dance studio First Dance. My now husband and I, had just moved to Charlotte and I was planning a wedding in four months! While planning this wedding, which took place in Los Angeles, we were traveling for business and in Europe or Los angeles every couple of weeks. I found Alex 6 weeks before our wedding and explained that I had had this vision for the longest time, of our first dance choreographed to my favorite song "No Diggity." In addition, I explained that we would have about 2 weeks to learn a choreographed dance, and on top of that I wanted something untraditional like salsa. Alex was beyond accommodating. I had sent her Chet Fakers version of "No Diggity" prior to our first session, and when we arrived for our first lesson out of five, she had a rumba/salsa dance perfectly timed to every verse of our song. She was extremely patient, encouraging, non-judgmental, and each of the steps were well explained and demonstrated. Working with Alex was like working with your best friend that knows how to dance, choreograph and teach.
