The best there is for knees and hips. Bare with me here. After spending 14 months going through $1000s and endless tests, specialists and trials at Mayo for pain to the right of my lower spine. The Mayo had me and my insurance convinced against my judgment that I needed a hip replacement at 45yo. I went through all the presurgical tests for Mayo and the week before my surgery I happened to run into a good friend and surgeon who I have known for 20 years. When he heard I needed a hip replaced and he recommended I see Dr Firestone as a second opinion and an authoritative take on my images. He said. "If I was having my hip replaced this would be the surgeon I would goto and trust" First visit with Dr Firestone he spent a lot of time with me and viewing my images and quickly assessed that my hip doesn't need any work. He took the time out of his normal scope to send me back for spine xrays and discovered that my L4/L5 vertebrae were almost touching on the right side... something that the spine surgeon's at Mayo completely overlooked. I ended up at Barrows who had me in surgery very quickly before I lost the use of my right leg. Since then, with continued pain (from nerve damage) my right side was bothering me and Barrows wanted me to see Dr Firestone again for another opinion now that the spine surgery was over. Dr Firestone again cleared my hips and warn me not to let anyone work on my hip even orthoscopically unless I cannot walk with pain coming from my hip. I will add, every other Doctor who surgeon I have seen for my spine and recovery look at Dr Firestone as an authority and some have been impressed that I have seen Dr Firestone. When I have told other Drs that the Mayo wanted to replace my hip, they question my decision not to until I tell them Dr Firestone says no.. then the usual response is "if Dr Firestone says no, then your hip must be fine" Dr Firestone had me run through a series of ARP wave therapies for my spine rehabilitation in his office which really helped my recovery. ARP wave is very intense but well worth it. For a well balanced review, Dr Firestone doesn't take insurance, most Drs when they are at the top of their field do not need to. Unfortunate fact of life. However, don't let that deter you from getting a second or third opinion from an expert. It could be life changing or assuring to know. I will say the initial consultation is well worth the money, it isn't a bank breaking amount like you see when Drs bill insurance companies. Just ask.. follow up appointments are very affordable and really not much more than co-pays these days. I will add. Dr Firestone is an exceptional expert. His bedside manner is not the same as many Drs out there who just want to chat and seem as a friend who just doesn't really help but makes you feel warm and fuzzy. Dr Firestone is very focused and highly regarded & respected. When my conversation strayed to another subject he let me know to stay on subject. Which is really how all our Drs should be. When I was looking for a knee surgeon, I chose Dr. Firestone. Why? I know there are risks with surgery. If there were any complications, I wanted an experienced surgeon who could help me get to the best outcome possible. When a failed knee replacement became my reality, I trusted Dr. Firestone would help me. Instead, Dr. Firestone failed me. I suffered from day one after my knee replacement. I could not bend my knee. Dr. Firestone insisted the knee was perfect and finally told me he was tired of hearing I was not happy. The pandemic slowed things down but I managed to see a few surgeons. They all diagnosed a failed knee replacement. A few months ago, I had a much-needed knee revision surgery. Today, I am no longer crippled: I can finally walk without a significant limp; I can bike and hike again. I still reflect on my decision to go with Dr. Firestone based on his years of experience. I was told Ted is retiring and not doing surgeries. Ted did my knee replacement 10+ years ago. Although it went well he left my kneecap in and now it is severely arthritic and in need of a revision to fix the kneecap. I was told Shane Martin was taking over his practice. Dr. Firestone was touted as the best and said that he never had an infection and the recovery would be faster than anyone. After 1 month I developed an infection and had to have a second surgery. It has been 5 years since the second surgery and the pain in my hip and leg still keeps me awake at night. He tried to give me several types of electrical treatments, and charged me added ridiculous fees. He would not take insurance for the original surgery - so everything was all out of pocket. When i went into the surgery I told him i had a cold and maybe a sinus infection - he brushed it off saying they would give me some antibiotics and that it should not be a problem. My regular physician said the staff infection was probably caused by the sinus infection and he could not believe that he would have operated.... He is the most arrogant doctor i have ever dealt with. read more

November 27, 2018 August of 2018 brought new joy to my life as I was blessed to receive the expert services of Dr. Theodore Firestone. Through his excellent skills I feel I have been given a chance for a new, normal life! In 2014 I began an odyssey of agony when my right knee started hurting for no apparent reason. My primary care physician referred me to a prominent Orthopedic group with many fine surgeons. Following an MRI, I was diagnosed with a hairline fracture of my femur. An attempt at "cementing" the fracture was not successful, and shortly thereafter it was discovered that the end of my femur was now disintegrating, which necessitated a total knee replacement. The total knee arthroplasty was accomplished in early 2015 by the same Orthopedic group. Initially the recovery seemed to be going well, but pain and stiffness began within a year and continued to increase, even after undergoing a manipulation under anesthesia and continuous excellent physical therapy. Finally convinced that I needed a new knee, my surgeon completed a knee revision surgery on August 1, 2017, as I was not only in constant pain, but now I could no longer straighten my knee beyond about 30 degrees from straight nor bend more than about 80 degrees from straight. Within a few months after the knee revision, pain and stiffness recurred. Physical therapy and pain meds could not help my deteriorating condition. Luckily a visit to my Periodontal Dentist, who had been treating me through all this orthopedic trauma, led him to recommend Dr. Theodore Firestone to alleviate all my troubles. Prior excellent treatment and results was the reason for this referral. When I received an appointment for consultation with Dr. Firestone, he took his time and told me he had thoroughly examined all my orthopedic treatment records. He said if he felt he could not help me, he would not take the case. I nearly stopped breathing, fearing the worst, but he quickly assured me he was certain he could help me return to a normal life. How excited I was! I was amazed when his staff told him he had a surgery opening in just two weeks and he said that would be great. My knee revision surgery was completed as promised on August 15, and I was up walking the same day without pain! I was released the next day, feeling great. I am now 3 months post-surgery and each day has been virtually pain free, something I have not experienced in nearly four years! I am continuing physical therapy for now, but I walk without a limp and with my leg fully extended, and I am able to flex my knee to at least 90 degrees. The only reason I gave Dr. Firestone gave him two stars was because he did a good job with my hip replacement (2000) and got me in right away. He is extremely knowledgeable and capable but if you also care about the bedside manner and the way you are spoken to and verbally treated..STEER CLEAR of Dr. Firestone. He thinks WAY too much of himself and told me that my insurance (along with all other insurances) didn't ever pay him enough for what he's worth and the miraculous (his words) surgeries he performs. He made feel like crap with the words he chooses. I was very happy he released me to my regular doctor. I HATE a doctor that is nothing short of an egotistical maniac. I knew he was great but didn't want to hear how wonderful he was from him. That information should just come his patients..not from the doctor's own mouth. He needs to save it for his bios. I would have gone elsewhere if I wasn't in so much pain. There's only one God and he's not it (even though he probably would say otherwise). read more

Dr. Firestone replaced my knee replacement (a knee revision) eight weeks ago. He has given me back my life with the ability to walk without pain and in time hike, bike and do whatever it is I want to do. I have known for 10 years that I needed a revision but put it off because I didn't know that I would ever be able to be without pain again and I didn't want to go through knee surgery just to have it fail again. Dr. Firestone has made it possible for me to be active and without pain. I cannot ever thank him enough. Jenette, Dr. Firestone's PA is always reachable via text or phone. I have been so impressed with her attitude and ability to answer questions and help. She works very closely with the doctor and is very capable herself. Because I had a knee revision, and under Dr. Firestone's supervision, my PT is ARP Wave therapy done in his office. This is a remarkable improvement in PT and although at times uncomfortable, so much better than regular PT. I will do this type of PT anytime because the results are so much better. I was severely injured by 2 previous hip replacement surgeries and was heading for permanent disability. I tried for an extensive period of time to find help-no other dr. would take on the difficulty of my problematic case. Finally found Dr. Firestone and he agreed to help-knowing the level of damage. He miraculously fixed me- no longer facing the rest of my life in a wheel chair. Go to him first and avoid these kind of problems. If you are in a difficult situation he is an expert at the difficult to impossible. There is no way to say enough good about him -he and his staff are all the A team. Simply the Best!! Dr. Firestone replaced both my knees in October of 2016. This is not a procedure you take on half heartedly and physical therapy is no joke so the skill, knowledge and compassion of the surgeon is essential. I interviewed five doctors before I chose Dr. Firestone. I work as a nurse practitioner and have seen so much since entering nursing in 1973 - doctors are all not created equal whether they mean well or not. Dr. Firestone has it all. I went back to work in three and a half weeks. I had to ice at lunch but I had my life back!! I am active again. Loving life and not being held back by knee pain and weakness. I would have easily given him 5 stars but I called to make an appointment to see about having my right hip done( which we talked about) only to find he's no longer accepting insurance. I'm told by the front desk cash only!! I couldn't believe it! I'm so disappointed that he only seems to only care about his wealth patients! I have excellent insurance!!! My 23-year old antiquated knee replacement needed a revision, it had been letting me know for some time. Given that my original orthopedic surgeon had retired, I did substantial research to select his replacement. I found Dr. Firestone and made the commitment to get this procedure completed. At my first office visit, Dr. Firestone took the time to discuss with me the nature and difficulty of this particular surgery, given the poor condition of my artificial knee. The joint had completely deteriorated, was now 'metal on metal', therefore I might have metal fragments or other contaminants in my leg, in my system. The truth is, Dr. Firestone, nor I, really knew the extent of the damage that had occurred to my knee and to the adjoining bones. This past January I checked into the hospital and was cared for by the wonderful team that Dr. Firestone has assembled to assist with his surgeries. All of these people were excellent: thorough, caring, skilled and truly professional. Some difficulty was expected in regards to my particular surgery, however it became quite a challenge, in that, I had bone that was more significantly damaged than anticipated. As there was very little natural bone to use as the foundation and structure for the new artificial knee, this created a serious ordeal for Dr. Firestone and his team to overcome. A difficult surgery had just become far more complicated and time consuming. Due to Dr. Firestone's expansive knowledge, creative thinking and care for his patients, he took the time to engineer a solution that was brilliant, elegant and protracted. The result: I have the use of my leg again, with a perfectly sound revised knee! I'm happy to say, after much encouragement from Dr. Firestone & his Physician's Assistant - Jeanette, I am walking well, no cane, no walker and with very little difficulty. May 19, 2019 Dr. Firestone replaced both my knees 15 months ago, and last week, I completed a three-day hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon (and back up again)! I had exactly zero pain for the entire hike. Before I met Dr. Firestone, two other orthopedic surgeons had told me that I needed to live in a house on one level (because I wouldn't ever be able to go up and down stairs regularly) and that knee surgery would probably reduce the extreme pain I had, but would not restore functionality. They told me that I would never hike again, and that I should delay having surgery until I had accepted this fact. They also said things like, "No one ever died of knee pain," and "This is purely elective surgery." After Dr. Firestone operated, he noted that if I had not had the surgery when I did, I would probably have ended up permanently consigned to a wheelchair within two years, due to the deteriorated state of my knees. Two days after I got out of the canyon, I hiked to the top of Granite Mountain in Prescott, AZ, another 6 hours of hiking for me, round trip. Even before Dr. Firestone operated, I was more impressed with him, his focus, and the protocols and arrangements he had put in place than I have been with any other doctor who has ever treated me. Some of the reasons are: 1. He was the first doctor whose opening remarks to me were about the pain he realized I must be experiencing. 2. He consistently looked at me when he was talking to me, rather than being focused solely on the computer screen. I felt that he actually saw me, not simply the case. 3. He quoted infection and readmission statistics to me, which no other doctor has ever done, and he contrasted national results to his (better) results, which was not only reassuring on the face of it, but indicated that he pays attention to the results that patients get - not just on what happens during surgery. 4. He wanted to send me directly home instead of to rehab, for two reasons: infection rates in institutions can be troublesome, and people do better convalescing in their own homes. In my experience, doctors typically default to sending patients to rehab for a few weeks, and his approach and his reasons for it make more sense to me. 5. He also asked me, though, whether going home would be workable for me, instead of assuming either that it would or wouldn't be. 6. He has a spectacular nurse practitioner, part of whose job it is to answer questions for patients who are about to have surgery, a very practical arrangement, and the incumbent, Jeanette Jumawan, was very patient, generous of her time, knowledgeable, clear, thorough, and reassuring in answering my questions. 7. Jeanette's answers were factual and informative. 8. When I asked about a protocol to reduce the odds of delirium, Jeannette answered the question and then commented, "You know, it has been a very long time since we had a patient develop delirium." This was startling and welcome news. The national statistics on delirium in the hospital are very high, even outside the ICU - depending on the study, perhaps 20%-70% of patients develop delirium, and the long-term consequences can be horrific. The idea that this is an exceedingly rare experience among his patients was spectacular news. 9. Jeanette finished every conversation by saying, "If you have any more questions, call me," rather than implying that she was too busy to take additional calls. 10. Jeanette was also very welcoming and inclusive when I arranged extra support for myself, such as a care manager and a massage therapist. This attitude can be rare, and I appreciate it. 11. He sent out surveys to track before-and-after pain and functionality, which implies an interest in knowing if the intervention has improved the patient's quality of life. In my experience, this focus is unusual. It is also highly significant to me. 12. He uses aspirin rather than other standard but more dangerous blood thinners, and I was very happy to hear this. 13. He talks to patients before they are put under. I have had experiences in the past in which the surgeon arrived after I was under, and operated without seeing me conscious. I received exceptional care in the hospital, and the anesthesiologist Dr. Firestone arranged for was nothing short of astonishingly good, as well. With any other surgeon, I would never have dreamed of having total replacements of both knees at the same time - I would have been worried about what state I would be left in if something went wrong. But I was completely comfortable having Dr. Firestone do this, and I remain very happy that I made this choice. Dr. Firestone gave me my life back. read more

If I could give him a thousand stars, I would. 2 years ago at the age of 44, I found myself unable to continue my active lifestyle without pain. Walking hurt. After an MRI and x-rays, I learned I had a torn labrum, slight hip dysplasia, and hereditary arthritis in my left hip. I saw 2 different orthopedic surgeons in Chandler and didn't get a good "vibe" from either of them. In 2016 I had 2 cortisone injections (temporary solutions) at different places and asked both radiologists the same question: "If you needed a hip replacement, who would you go to?" Without hesitation, they both said Dr. Ted Firestone. I had my first consult with Dr. Firestone in January of 2017 and my left hip replaced by him July 26, 2017. IT WAS THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER! It was my first surgery. Everyone associated with the surgery was ah-mazing. Him, his team, the hospital team....I'd do it all over again tomorrow if I needed to. I went home the next day, used a walker for 10 days, a cane for another week, and the following week went on a short hike. I never had ANY pain after surgery, and only took 3 pain pills. I'm now 9 weeks post-surgery and at 46, I finally have my life back. Dr. Firestone is an incredibly talented, confident doctor - which I appreciate - and always took the time to answer my questions. I followed his instructions for exercises and have not needed any PT. I'll be forever grateful for Dr. Firestone and his team for giving me my life back. Set appointment by telephone for 2 weeks out. Confirmed with scheduler the office accepts BCBS. This was my first appointment at this office. After x-ray had just a short wait time before MD entered exam room. He was quite aloof. I now understand why his patient in the waiting room with us (when she asked us had we met him yet) said "he is a surgeon". Immediately after telling me I am in need of surgery he said in June he will no longer accept BCBS. He said the other costs of surgery could be covered by the insurer, but not his fees (which he estimated between $7000 - $10000). He suggested his fees would simply be paid out of pocket. When asked how far out he is scheduling surgery, he said 4-6 weeks. If I wanted him to operate, I would be paying him out of my pocket without getting credit with my insurance plan. No thank you. Doctor, you may have great surgical skills, but I am certain there are many, many others who also have great surgical skills who will accept my insurance plan. It is a shame you allow your staff to schedule visits, especially with new patients, knowing that in a few weeks you will no longer accept their insurance provider. Have you informed your scheduler? People asking for appointments should be told this information at the time of scheduling rather than learning this during the appointment. After meeting him I quickly realized I would not choose him for my care provider. I prefer to have a provider who presents as more caring. That's not the basis of my complaint. We don't always connect with everyone - I get that. What was bothersome was that frankly, it was a waste of my time and money to see him. Had I been properly informed prior to the visit I would have chosen someone else who did not have imminent plans to drop my insurance plan. I don't like to write negative reviews, but think it is only fair to share this information because others, like me, may find themselves having to pay 2 doctor visits now because they were not informed up front. read more

I'm a nurse, and sought the recommendation of my colleague for a good orthopedic surgeon when I was having problems with my knee. She told me she worked with Dr. Firestone, and he had patients coming to him from professional sports, all over the country. Consequently, Dr. Firestone, did a revision on my knee. When I was still in pain (and on pain medications) after nine months, I returned to him because I knew it shouldn't take THAT long to recover. He didn't bother to examine the knee or take any x-rays. He immediately told me, "There's nothing the matter with that knee, besides, I wouldn't touch you, you're nothing but a junky!" I was shocked and very hurt. With the help of my PCP, I found another orthopedist (who, by the way, was very familiar with Dr. Firestone's arrogance). He discovered that the source of my pain was because Dr. Firestone's shoddy work loosened and the knee was extremely unstable. I needed another revision! He is as good as it gets, he saved me when I could not walk. Walked the day after surgery, one week later I was doing great . I listened to everything he said . Pain meds do not allow you to heal as quickly. I'd rather have a little disccomfort then take pain meds, and at three weeks I feel great. My experience was awesome. It's a small world, and I have met so many people from all over that come to him for surgery that have nothing but the best to say about him as a surgeon. I had both knees totally replaced in late July 2016, by Dr. Firestone. I'm 62. I should have done the procedures at the least, ten years ago. The constant pain, bowing of my knees and the inability to walk finally inspired me to find the best surgeon. I did my due diligence, as far as researching surgeons and facilities. This was my first ever surgery. I had consultations with 3 and decided on Dr. Firestone. I'm glad that I selected him and did both knees during the one surgery. I think he is one of the best. I have no complaints. I have no limp, no pain, though I am very sorry that I waited so long. You owe it to yourself to meet with him. I'd like to add one more piece of personal advice. By month three, join a LA type fitness place with an indoor pool. The water therapy, by walking the pool and exercising the knee gave me an amazing range of motion, flexibility and strength.
