Michael inspected the chimney with a camera and quickly found the problems. The original damper was mounted low and blocked much of the smoke chamber, the smoke chamber itself was rough and poorly shaped, and the deteriorated flue liner left large gaps that disrupted the draft. Rather than simply repairing the chimney, he completely re-engineered how it worked. He removed the old damper and installed a top-sealing damper, enlarged and reshaped the opening into the smoke chamber, then rebuilt and smoothed the chamber so the smoke could flow cleanly and efficiently into the flue. The result is remarkable. He took a 50-year-old chimney and made it work better than new. For the first time since we've owned the house, the fireplace drafts perfectly without a trace of smoke entering the room. As a bonus, it looks fantastic too. His crew was equally impressive. They paid attention to every detail, and even though chimney work is inherently messy, they sealed off the entire work area with plastic and left the house absolutely spotless. I'm incredibly grateful I found Michael. It's rare to find someone who combines this level of technical expertise, craftsmanship, professionalism, and genuine enthusiasm for his work. He clearly loves what he does, and it shows in every detail. It's also a reminder of what's been lost. Today, so much of construction is about replacing rather than restoring, and many fireplaces and chimneys arrive as prefabricated systems assembled from factory-made parts. While the valve costs about $350 from parts warehouse, he later said his price to me was $1200 and said that is how the industry works. On top of that he said it will be four hours of labor at $250 per hour. He argued that he has been doing this for 20 plus years and any other technician will do the same. Luckily, I was able to fire him right away and also have Venmo return the payment for false diagnosis. I called up another technician for repair, while ordering the part myself. The other technician said valve is fine and charged me $300 for overall service. Michael would have costed me over $2500. Dishonest, unethical, unprofessional, extremely poor communicator. Great potential here, but the customer service follow-through definitely needs improvement…read more I'll start with the positives: their pricing was highly competitive, and they were very prompt when it came to scheduling the initial visit. I originally hired them to install a missing chimney cap. While on-site, they identified a few additional structural issues. They offered to fix them for a very fair additional fee, which I appreciated. Because the weather forecast called for rain, I expressed concern about how the moisture might affect the repairs, but they assured me it wouldn't be an issue. Since I wasn't home during the service, we communicated entirely over the phone. After checking the work later, I took photos of several gaps right next to the repaired sections. It looked like it would only take a few minutes to fill them, so I reached out to ask why they were missed. They explained that the rain had likely washed the material loose and promised to return to touch it up. While I understand that weather can cause scheduling delays, it has now been over a month. I've had to repeatedly text them for updates, and the lack of proactive communication is disappointing. It shouldn't be the customer's responsibility to constantly chase down a business to finish a job.
